Spotlighting “One Hit Wonders”
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Madison Schools officials continue
to review the potential of instituting
a weapon detection system (metal detectors
or wands) in the schools to improve
safety.
“There’s not been a decision on metal
detectors or wands. We’re still researching
them,” said Groveport Madison
Communications Director Jeff Warner.
The weapons detection system would be
just part of the long and short term steps
the district is taking to enhance safety and
security for its students and staff. (Visit
https://www.columbusmessenger.com/safety-measures-progressing-in-groveportmadison-schools.html
for more information
on the long and short term safety measures.)
The actions are being taken due to incidents
of violence and other issues that
have taken place in the high school.
At the Groveport Madison Board of
Education’s Jan. 18 meeting, Deputy
Superintendent Paul Smathers presented
options and costs for weapon detection systems.
“It’s important that we focus and take
our time to make a really good informed
decision,” said Smathers. “Don’t let it be
emotional. We have to do the right things
for the right reasons for the right people,
and that’s our students and staff.”
Smathers added that, if a school environment
is not safe, it is difficult to educate
students.
He said district officials need to weigh
the use, cost, implementation, training,
policies, additional staff needed, administrative
guidelines, and processes and procedures
involved with metal detection
devices. He also said district officials must
work with attorneys to verify and clarify
liability situations.
Options Smathers presented to the
board were:
•a Garrett Super Scanner hand/wand
metal detector at a cost of $224 each. He
said 30 would be needed: 12 at the high
school, six at the elementaries, six for the
middle schools, two for the district offices,
one at Li’l Cruiser, and three for back up.
•an Evolv Technology walk through
weapon detectors at a cost of $24,000 each
under a three year lease agreement.
•a CEIA portable walk through metal
detection and weapon detection at a cost of
$16,000 each.
Smathers advised the board that officials
need more time to find schools similar
to Groveport Madison that use
metal/weapon detector systems and see
how well they work at those schools.
Board member Kathy Walsh wants to
see the board take action on the issue soon.
“If it costs $300,000 or $200,000 a year
and we stop weapons from going into the
high school and it keeps our students and
staff safe it’s worth it,” said Walsh. “It’s
just worth it. It’s a no brainer.”
Board member Chris Snyder said the
cost of the Evolv Technology system
seemed “exorbitant.”
“Cost is the biggest thing to deal with,”
said Snyder. “We have to make an
informed decision. These systems are not
Certain bands only strike gold once
with songs that become “one hit wonders,”
but that singularity does not diminish the
music.
The Groveport Madison Area
Community Choir is celebrating one hit
wonders with its upcoming show, “One
Hit Wonders: A Musical Variety Show,” to
be held in the Groveport Madison High
School auditorium 4475 S. Hamilton
Road, on Feb. 25. Show times are 1 p.m.
and 7 p.m.
“There are so many ‘One Hit Wonders’
(songs performed or written by artists
that only ever had one top 40 hit) that it
seemed like a good choice for a great selection
of music,” said Groveport Madison
Area Community Choir Director Terri
Christensen.
Christensen said one of the highlights
of this year’s show is a solo/video tribute
from Lori Motts-Byrd honoring Vietnam
Helicopter pilots with the song. “Spirit in
the Sky.”
“The segment is introduced by choir
member Ron White, who was a pilot in
Vietnam,” said Christensen. “It proves to
be quite moving.”
Currently the Groveport Madison Area
Community Choir has 80 adult members
and 17 youths with at least 20 back stage
and lobby volunteers.
“It’s a very diverse group of people that
comes together to give back to the community
by providing fun and quality entertainment,”
said Christensen. “A portion of
the proceeds go to charity (such as
Groveport Madison Human Needs) to
help folks in the area in need. The choir is
a family. They come together for other
events throughout the year to help in the
community as well. Our members are
from all over central Ohio.”
A fight recently erupted among four students at
Groveport Madison High School.
According to the Groveport Police, around 12:30
p.m. on Jan. 30, the Police School Resource Officer
made an emergency radio call for officer assistance
due to a fight at the school. The officer used pepper
spray to stop the fighting and disperse what police
described as an “unruly crowd” that was gathering to
Charges filed after fight at the high school
watch/participate. Police officers from Groveport,
Madison Township, and Franklin County Sheriff’s
Office, remained on scene to address any possible following
incidents.
Groveport Police Lt. Josh Short said four students
“were actively engaged in fighting.”
“One of the male students had (allegedly) initially
assaulted one of the other male students in the rotunda
area of the high school for reasons unknown at this
time,” said Short. “School staff broke up that incident
and were bringing both of those students to
the office. While both students were being
taken to the office, two other students
(allegedly) attacked the student who had
(allegedly) assaulted the first student. The
student who was originally assaulted then
broke free from school staff and ran back to
engage in fighting with the other three.
This occurred on the middle landing and
stairs of the main stairway in the cafeteria
area.”
Short said the pepper spay was deployed
at the fighting students because they were
refusing to stop fighting.
“They were endangering school staff and
the SRO as they continued to fight wildly
with each other and against staff that was
trying to stop them,” said Short. “One of
the security officers was shoved up against
the stair railing and was in danger of being
toppled over. We know that the sooner we
can stop the fighting the less likely it is
that someone will get hurt.”
Short said officers know from experience
they need to stop the fighting quickly or
other students will run to and encourage or
join in the fighting, which makes it difficult
for staff to intervene by refusing to disperse
or actively blocking or pushing at them.
“The quick use of the pepper spray
immediately stopped the fighting and dissuaded
any other students from approaching,”
said Short.
He said there were no injuries observed
or reported due to the assault or fighting.
The students affected by the pepper spray
were checked out by the school nurse and
Columbus Fire Department medics.
“All four students are being charged
with aggravated rioting,” said Short.
“Additional charges may follow with the
continuing investigation and video evidence
review.”
Short said officers want the community
to know that the Franklin County Juvenile
system makes if difficult to arrest and jail a
minor.
“Despite what the police or the public
thinks is appropriate in disruptive and violent
situations like this, we are not regularly
able to jail a student for these types of
actions,” said Short. “The juvenile detention
facility in Franklin County has a strict
and narrow list for jailable offenses and
most of the occurrences at the high school
do not apply.”
Celebrating a veteran of WWII
World War II veteran Eddie Liebbrand was recently celebrated on his 99th birthday.
He and his fellow troops departed for Europe in August 1944. During the war
he bravely fought in 1944’s Battle of the Bulge and later became a prisoner of war
under Nazi Germany rule by December of that year. He and hundreds of other men
were held for nearly four months in a camp where they were denied basic needs
and suffered watching many of their fellow soldiers die of malnutrition, extreme
temperatures, or violence by their captors. He lost 62 pounds and was on the
brink of death himself at the prisoners’ liberation on April 2, 1945. He returned
home to Columbus and was honorably discharged and began building a life as a
husband, father, and machinist. In his later years he volunteered at Groveport’s
Motts Military Museum where he shared his experiences. “It changes a lot for
young people to know about what happened then,” said Liebbrand. He views his
service as something that needed to be done and is proud to have served his
country. PFC Edwin T. Leibbrand served in the 110th Reg., 28th Infantry Div., U.S.
Army, Battle of the Bulge POW Nazi Stalag 9B.
Groveport Elementary School is 100 years old this year and students
there are embracing the school’s founding.
“We decided to celebrate the school building’s 100th birthday on
Jan. 27 because it was also the 100th day of school and that is a
day we celebrate every year,” said Groveport Elementary Principal
April Bray. “The staff planned so many fun lessons around the
number 100.”
She said students were encouraged to dress like they were 100
years old or wear a shirt with 100 items. Students put 100 items
in a bag and wrote clues for their classmates to guess what was
inside.
“Our first graders wrote informative essays about things they
learned about Groveport Elementary,” said Bray. “Vicki Ottman
also came in and spoke about what Groveport Elementary was like
when she attended kindergarten there in the 1950s. She showed
pictures of her kindergarten graduation, school report card, and
told stories about what it was like when she went to our school.
Vicki’s mom also attended Groveport School (as the building was
called when it housed all 12 grades) and graduated in 1924.”
Bray said the celebration also included recognizing all the students
who made at least 100 percent progress toward their i-Ready
Stretch Growth goal for reading and math. Students made 100th
day of school crowns, researched what life was like in 1923, used
an app to see what they would like when they are 100 years old,
wrote about what they would do if they were turning age 100
today, listed 100 reasons why they love Groveport Elementary, hid
100 Hershey Kisses around the room and challenged students to
find them all and match the numbers on the bottom to the hundreds
chart, and read books with 100 in the title.
“The students were very excited and interested to hear about
the history of the school,” said Bray. “Our staff takes great pride
in our school and its history. I can only
imagine how many of our former students
When asked what some of the things are
that the students and staff like about the
historic school, Bray said, “They love the
auditorium, library, gym, hardwood floors,
traditions that continue to this day, the
stone fountain, the World War II memorial,
the uniqueness of the architecture, and how
much this school has been a pillar in the
community.”
This event was just the beginning of the
students’ and staff’s plans to celebrate the
school’s 100th year.
“We are still discussing some other possible
celebrations for the kids, but we will
have an adults only community 100th
Anniversary Celebration Aug. 5 from 1-3
p.m.,” said Bray. “More information from
the planning committee will be shared in
the coming months.”
Bray said the school holds a special place
in the hearts of the community.
“I think the community is proud of our
school and Groveport Elementary’s place in
Groveport’s history,” said Bray. “The community
has always been very supportive of
the school and they value education and
want to preserve our history.”
Groveport School history
On Aug. 8, 1921, with enrollment on the
rise, Groveport Madison school board members
W.H. Hanstein, G.W. Woerlein, Pearl
Watkins, Daniel Schleppi, and Clarence
Stevenson presented a bond issue to the district,
which the voters approved, to build a
new $225,000, three story red brick school
Groveport School as it looked in 1926.
on Groveport’s east Main Street to house all 12 grades, as well as
an elementary school at Edwards’ Station on Alum Creek Drive at
Williams Road. (In an architectural curiosity, Edwards
Elementary was designed as a smaller version of Groveport
School.)
Bond issue campaign literature from 1921 noted the new
“Groveport School” enabled the district to close down the six one
room schoolhouses it was operating around Madison Township as
well as the smaller, nearly 40-year-old school that housed all 12
grades that was once located where Groveport’s Naomi Court now
stands.
Groveport School (now Groveport Elementary) opened in 1923
and housed all 12 grades until the mid-1950s when a new high
school was built next door. Groveport School was constructed on
land that was once pasture land owned by the Rarey family and
where the famous horse Cruiser romped.
The school features interior golden glazed brick walls as well as
a separate gymnasium and auditorium, which is unique for school
buildings of its era that often combined the gym and auditorium
into one room.
Playing fields and a playground compliment the structure. A
grand front lawn sweeps out to meet Main Street and features the
recently restored stone fountain as its centerpiece.
The original classroom design for Groveport School included
manual arts, agriculture laboratory, machine shop, home economics,
cafeteria, and storage, locker rooms on the first floor. The second
floor housed grades 1-8 while the third floor held the high
school classrooms.
Besides providing a home for education, Groveport School has
been a social center for both community and school functions
including farmers’ exhibits, dances, lyceum courses, plays, athletics,
and concerts.
The school remains a thriving and active place educationally. It
is an architectural jewel nestled in downtown Groveport that is a
functioning reminder of Groveport and Madison Township’s past
as well as a beacon of promise for the future. Above all, it remains
a symbol of the area’s desire to provide a solid public education to
its citizenry.
Groveport Elementary School, as well as Groveport Madison
Middle School Central next door, were both placed on the National
Register of Historic Places early in the 21st century.

Long time former Canal
Winchester city councilman Bruce
Jarvis was recently sworn in as
Madison Township’s newest trustee,
replacing Michele Reynolds who was
elected in November to the state senate.
A Madison Township resident
since 1991, Jarvis was appointed to
Canal Winchester Council in 1996
and served until 2010 when he
resigned to lead what was then called
Main Street Canal Winchester, later
reorganized as Destination: Canal
Winchester (D:CW).
Jarvis and then D:CW President
Bob Garvin led an effort to restore
the Interurban Depot in Canal
Winchester and founded the Canal
Winchester Blues & Ribfest. After
resigning from D:CW at the end of
2015, he was re-elected to one more
term on city council in 2016, serving
a total of 18 years.
When asked why he wanted to return to public service,
Jarvis said, “When Michele Reynolds was elected
to state senate last November, I knew there would be
a call to finish the last year of her term,” said Jarvis.
“I considered my skills and experience to be an asset
and wished to apply those in support of Madison
Township. I assure township residents that I am keenly
aware that they are the ultimate
customer and that I will
strive daily to ensure township
services are provided in the
most effective, efficient and professional
way possible.”
Jarvis foresees one of the
biggest challenges facing the
township to be maintaining and
enhancing township services.
He said the cost of providing
services continues to rise and
township leaders must be smart
about priorities and potential
outside financial assistance.
In identifying township
strengths, Jarvis said, “When it
comes to fire and police protection,
the township has a great
and well-deserved reputation
within the community. At times
it is literally a matter of life or
death depending on the professionalism
of these organizations.
Equally critical are the
employees who maintain the
roads in the unincorporated
areas of the township; the same
roads needed by emergency
units and the residents.”
Jarvis felt if the trustee position
is half as interesting as he
thinks it will be, it is likely he
will run for the seat in the
November election for the next
four-year term. His Jan. 26
appointment was to finish out
Reynolds’ term, which expires
at the end of the year.
“All I can say is that when
you experience the ability to make a positive difference
for you and your neighbors through public service, you
naturally want to do more...that’s why I serve,” said
Jarvis.
According to a township press release, trustees
John Pritchard and Katherine Chipps cited Jarvis’
past local elected public service and the lengthy local
community involvement he brings to the position that
helped finalize their decision.
Initially, seven individuals submitted resumes for
the open seat, but before the first round of interviews,
one candidate withdrew. Six candidates underwent
two interviews each, one with the department heads
and the other with the two trustees. The trustees narrowed
their choice down to two individuals and felt
that as the day-to-day managers of township departments,
it was important for department heads to have
interaction and feedback regarding the candidates.
Reynolds resigned from her position as trustee
effective Dec. 31, 2022, and Jarvis will fulfill her unexpired
term through Dec. 31, 2023.
Dog license renewal season
Franklin County Auditor Michael
Stinziano announced the dog license
renewal period runs through March 31.
The renewal period deadline, which is normally
Jan. 31, was extended two months.
Licenses may be purchased online at
doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov or at the
auditor’s office license counter, 373 S. High
St., 21st floor in downtown Columbus. The
counter is open Monday through Friday,
from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office offers
licensing at expanded locations across the
county, including at pet vaccination clinics,
the Franklin County Dog Shelter, and at
other events. Owners can change addresses,
download forms, and update dog information
via the online licensing system.
One-year, three-year and permanent
dog licenses can be purchased without
penalty through March 31. After the deadline,
the cost to purchase a license doubles.
In addition to being required by state
law, dog licensing ensures that any lost dog
is returned quickly to their owners.
Groveport’s first city park
Groveport is a town rich with park land
with several municipal parks as well as nearby
Metro Parks.
But do you know
which was the first
park to be built in
Groveport?
I believe the first
park constructed in town is Blacklick Park,
located at 770 Blacklick St. (at the east end of
the street). For many years it was the only
park in Groveport. I’ve often heard, but never
been able to confirm, that the park was built
during the Great Depression in the 1930s as
part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New
Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA)
program.
By the mid-1930s Roosevelt’s WPA
began to have an impact on Groveport. The
WPA helped build the village’s water system
and water plant in 1936; laid concrete
sidewalks throughout the village in 1935;
washed and painted the walls and ceilings
of Groveport School; and built several outhouses
in the village and area farms.
One plum WPA project slated for
Groveport did not come to pass as records
show the construction of a public library
was proposed for Groveport in 1935, but
rescinded with no explanation in 1937.
But in combing through old WPA
records I found no mention of Blacklick
Park.
Records in the Groveport Municipal
Building as well as the Groveport Heritage
Museum also do not reveal much on the
park’s origins.
Though its birth year remains a mystery,
that is a minor curiosity because
Blacklick Park has played its role as a
pleasant neighborhood park well.
Blacklick Park’s original footprint was
three acres, but if you include the nearby
natural wooded areas and the old Scioto
Valley Traction Line trail that extends to
historic Ohio and Erie Canal Lock 22 it fills
about 21 acres. The trail also connects the
park to Groveport Park. The well preserved
remnants of the Ohio and Erie Canal are
visible and run along the length of the
park.
The park’s historic significance is noted in
a Ohio Historical Marker that explains how
in the 1800s the park’s original core site was
once home to a canal boatyard where canal
boats were built and repaired. The marker
also mentions how the electric interurban
railway - the Scioto Valley Traction Line - ran
on Blacklick Street and then along the canal
from 1904 to the 1930s.
I recall the first time I visited the park as
a little kid in the 1960s. My older sister took
me and some neighborhood kids on a walk
through town to the park on a fine summer’s
day for a picnic of baloney sandwiches, potato
chips, and Kool-Aid. Back then there were
wooden picnic tables scattered about among
the tall trees. I remember that embedded in
Messenger photo by Rick Palsgrove
Groveport’s Blacklick Park located at the
east end of Blacklick Street.
the picnic tables was a metal emblem that
read, “Groveport Lions Club,” most likely
because the club provided the tables. There
were playground swings and a tall metal
slide to play on as well as space among the
trees to play “tag.”
I also recall the original flag pole there
encircled by a now long gone narrow driveway.
The concrete base of the flagpole was
emblazoned with “4H,” as the local 4H Club
must have erected it as a project.
That old flagpole is still there, but it fell
into disuse in later years and a flag had not
regularly flown from it for some time. On
Memorial Day in 2008, the late Mack Harris,
a United States Air Force veteran who lived
near the park, took note of the lack of a flag
flying from the pole and decided to do something
about it. He walked over to the park
with an American flag he normally flew on
the front of his home and raised it on the old
flagpole in Blacklick Park.
“It was the right thing to do,” said Harris,
in a 2008 interview. “That flagpole on this
important day (Memorial Day) was now
dressed up with a flag. A flag raised in a public
park has substance to it. It provides a focal
point.”
Harris noted that, when he walked into
the park that Memorial Day morning in 2008
to raise the flag, there was a group of people
already in the park talking, laughing, and
enjoying the holiday.
“They saw me walk to the pole with the
flag and when I raised it there was a hush in
the park,” said Harris. “The people in the
park knew and recognized the importance of
the flag being raised.”
Harris said the old flagpole was a bit wobbly,
but, despite its age, he said the pole’s
rope, pulley, and cleat worked perfectly when
he raised the flag.
In a recent years a new flagpole was erected
by the city in the park and it serves as a
testament to Harris’ efforts.
Today the park still has great trees and
open spaces as well as more playground
equipment, a small basketball court, a shelter
house, and benches. It remains a nice,
quiet spot to listen to the birds sing, hear the
wind rustle the leaves, feel the warmth of
sunbeams filtering through the trees, and see
the flag flying on its new pole.
“80 for Brady” is as enjoyable as it is touching
I do not often experience a conflict of the
heart when it comes to choosing which
movie to review for my column, but making
a decision as to whether I wanted to give
my time and my dwindling coffers to “80 for
Brady” had me well and truly torn.
Editor’s Notebook
Dedra
Cordle
I did have an interest
in this film because
it stars four legendary
actors: Sally Field, Jane
Fonda, Rita Moreno,
and Lily Tomlin. But I
also did not have an
interest in this film
because it also stars
Tom Brady — one of
the most legendary
NFL quarterbacks
who recently retired
for the second time and whose presence
looms over this film as much as his specter
will throughout the sport for all of eternity.
Unlike most football fans whose loyalties
do not lay with the New England
Patriots (or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or
whatever team on the west coast team that
may entice him to come out of retirement
later this spring), I have never been a
Brady-hater, but man has he been grating
for the past couple years. First there was
the acceptance of the pandemic-relief funds
for his multi-million dollar health and wellness
business, then there was the drawn
out first retirement that had him basking
in thousands of puff pieces for months and
then taking it all back, then there were the
bratty sideline antics when things were not
going his way for once, and then there was
the non-fungible token scandal, and now I
am just about tired of seeing him and hearing
about him. If you add all that up, and
then throw in the fact that he is a producer
on this film and gets a percentage of the
box office profit, it makes you not want to
be involved in anything he is involved in,
right?
After much internal debate between this
film and M. Night Shyamalan’s dystopian
adaptation, “Knock at the Cabin,” I decided
to stick with a vow I made to support novels,
movies, and television shows that are
women-led, women-centered, and showcase
people of a certain age living active and full
lives. That even includes women’s lives
that partially revolve around finding inspiration
from a famous athlete named Tom
Brady.
“80 for Brady” is an infectiously joyous
film. It has moments that will make you
cringe or even give you a headache because
of how saccharine it can be, but it is also an
engaging and lighthearted story about four
friends who take comfort in sport and in
each other. Thanks in large part to the
chemistry between the main cast, “80 for
Brady” has a charm that shines through
despite being centered around someone
who seems so devoid of it at times.
Loosely inspired by a true story, “80 for
Brady” follows longtime best friends Betty
(Field), Trish (Fonda), Maura (Moreno) and
Lou (Lily Tomlin) whose love for Tom
Brady and the New England Patriots
knows no bounds. Despite having lived on
the east coast for most of their lives, the
quartet had little interest in football before
Tom Brady came onto the scene. In fact,
they really didn’t want to watch that fateful
game between the Pats and the New
York Jets but had to because Lou’s television
would not change the channel. When a
young Tom Brady came in for an injured
that would send them down to
Houston to see the 2017 matchup with the
Atlanta Falcons. Having little confidence
that their story of finding perseverance
through watching Tom Brady and the team
would win them the ultimate prize, they
try to put it out of their minds and hearts.
But then Lou makes the announcement
that they did snag the ultimate prize and
they would soon be embarking on a journey
towards “the best day of their lives.”
Naturally, things do not always do as
planned, especially in a comedy that features
Fonda and Tomlin together with all
of their chaotic energy.
Written by “Booksmart” scribes Emily
Halpern and Sarah Haskins, the script is a
nod to the fact that there is no age limit
when it comes to having fun. Not only do
the characters have a good time as they get
involved in various shenanigans during
their Super Bowl experience, but it seems
as if the primary and secondary actors are
having a good time, too. Watching all of
this together makes the action all the more
engaging to the audience too, despite how
outlandish some of the scenes may get.
Even with the more farcical elements
within this story, everything that happens
in this film is well-intentioned and
designed to garner laughs. Despite the
overall lighthearted tone of the film, there
are moments in which the story concentrates
of real-life issues related to cancer,
death, and love — all of which we can relate
to.
As a credit to the writers and director
Kyle Marvin, all of the transitions between
the silly and the serious feel natural to the
development of the story and, as a result,
makes “80 for Brady” as enjoyable as it is
touching — even with all of the mentions
and cameo appearances of a certain newly
retired quarterback.
