and members of the CPI (M)
youth organisation DYFI
protested in front of
Burrabuzaar police station,
alleging police inaction
against those who forced
Shashikala Yadav to commit
suicide. A case was lodged
against Shashikala’s in-laws,
who allegedly tortured her
for dowry. While her
brother-in-law Dharmendra
was arrested, her husband
Jitendra and his mother are
absconding. —BP
State fails to arrest drowning cases
Youngsters travelling to seaside are known to flout safety rules, causing frequent cases of death by drowning
Sujit Nath
Kolkata: Despite the
increasing number of
drowning cases among
youths at various beach and
river resorts in the recent
past, the state administration
seems to be reluctant
to take preventive measures.
In the last one year,
nearly 20 such cases were
reported where school and
college students were
found violating norms by
consuming liquor at these
spots and then drowning
despite warning notices
put up listing the dos and
don’ts when venturing into
such areas.
The situation is further
aggravated by the lack of
proper policing. In most
areas, there are hardly any
police patrols to prevent
such visitors from creating
a nuisance.
At the Purana Qilla Ghat
in Diamond Harbour, two
B.Com. students, Pritam
Naskar and Krishnendu
Ghosh, had drowned due to
a lack of policing.
The authorities do not
take action against private
boat owners and hotel
managers who take tourists
for joyrides without providing
safety measures like
life jackets. They also freely
provide liquor without
bothering to check proof of
age.
In the context of increasing
drowning cases, inspector-general
of police, law
and order, Surajit Kar
Purakayastha assured that
he would look into the matter
and would ensure that
all district police would
increase patrolling to prevent
such mishaps.
SSKM staff
beaten by
patient’s
family
Our Correspondent
Kolkata: A contractual
labourer, Sujit Mondol
was beaten up by family
members after they
charged the SSKM for not
keeping a close eye on one
of its high-risk patients.
On Thursday night,
mentally challenged Sunil
Kumar Ghosal, 71,
escaped from SSKM leading
to the fisticuff
between family members
and hospital staff.
Admitted with brain
tumor and supposed to
undergo surgery, Ghosal
escaped from the hospital
leaving a trail of questions
behind.
On Friday, when his
family went to visit him,
they did not find him on
his bed.
Even after searching for
Sunil, he was nowhere to
be seen either within the
hospital premises or even
its vicinity.
“The hospital did not
bother to look after the
patients as they are just
busy making money,” said
Tapan Ghoshal, the
patient’s son.
The hospital authorities
informed that family
members did not use their
green card to stay back for
the patient. Police intervened
to bring the situation
under control.
Our Correspondent
Kolkata: Google Earth will
not only help you find the
streets of Kolkata, you can
now also find a slum, thanks
to some children. They have
put up their sprawling slum
in Rishi Aurobindo Colony in
eastern Kolkata on the city
map. It has been a year since
they have been gathering
data about people, small
brick huts, crowded alleys,
scattered temples, trees and
other details.
He said: “In some areas,
there might be a lack of
proper policing but the situation
is not the same
everywhere. There are
tourist spots where our
officers keep a close watch
to ensure safe tourism. We
are preparing a report to
implement tourist guidelines
immediately in all
such places.”
In many cases, it was
found that private boat and
hotel owners were guilty of
indulging in illegal activities
such as providing call
girls with whom tourists
can go out on boat rides.
There have been previous
cases of youngsters revelling
on boats and falling to
their death in the ocean.
Naturally, a large sum of
money exchanges hands.
“While enjoying the trip,
most of the time youths
ignore safety measures and
often land in a problem,” B
Bhowmik, a private resort
owner in Digha said.
The president of the
Mandarmoni Hotel
Owners’ Association,
Debudas Mahapatra,
alleged that some police
officers were too busy collecting
bribes from hotel
owners and did nothing for
the safety and security of
tourists. “You will hardly
find any policeman
patrolling tourist areas,” he
said.
Mahapatra stated: “I
would like to request all
hotel owners to maintain
strict guidelines for all
tourists to prevent such
deaths. Some tourists are
good but there are a number
of young people who
indulge in such activities
resulting in more drowning
cases every year.”
Our Correspondent
Kolkata: Moinam, a fiveyear-old
thalassaemic boy
from Siliguri, has become the
first person in India to have a
successful mixed stem cell
transplant.
Moinam was diagnosed
with HbE-Beta Thalassemia,
an inherited blood disorder
in which the body produces
abnormal form of hemoglobin
from birth. His family
had no other option but to go
for blood transfusions every
month until doctors advised
them stem cell transplant,
and they met Dr Ashish
Mukherjee at Netaji Subhash
Chandra Bose Research
Institute.
“Consultation with several
doctors confirmed that our
son had HbE-Beta
Thalassemia. Our search for
right treatment began from
then till we came across Dr
Mukherjee who suggested
and guided us on the procedure
of stem cell therapy.
Stem cell banking of our second
child was the only way
left to cure thalassemia. As
suggested by the doctor, we
planned a second child and
preserved our daughter’s
cord blood with CordLife,”
said a teary-eyed Ashim Pal,
Moinam’s father. The stem
cells that were transplanted
came from his sister’s cord
blood and bone marrow.
Their struggles have now
paid off after the stem cell
transplant on April 3.
“Thalassemia is an inherited
blood disorder in which the
body produces an abnormal
form of haemoglobin which
is the metallo protein in red
blood cells that carries oxygen.
The disorder results in
excessive destruction of red
blood cells which causes
severe anemia that can occur
within months after birth. If
left untreated, severe anemia
can result in insufficient
growth and development, as
well as other common physical
complications that can
lead to a dramatically
decreased life-expectancy,”
said Dr Prosanto Chowdhary,
CordLife’s medical director.
Moinam was initially put
on an iron-based tonic which
helped in raising the level of
hemoglobin in blood, in iron
deficient conditions, but
Currency
racket
busted, two
arrested
Our Correspondent
Kolkata: Here was the classic
‘black money’ converter.
Dubiously-earned cash and a
little extra as commission
can earn back ‘white money’.
Things seemed fine for the
two accountants, till they
decided to detain a client
after a rift on Thursday night.
The client called the police
and the racket went bust by
dawn. Police said accused
Sanjay Jain and Nitin Shaw,
who ran a chartered accountancy
firm at 8, Chowringee
Lane, received `1.1 crore from
six businessmen for such
transactions.
The police arrested the duo
after receiving a complaint
from Abhishek Mohka, a
businessman who had gone
to seek their services. After
taking his money, the duo
had refused to convert the
sum into cheques and
instead detained him till
midnight at the office, said
the police.
“The duo used to run the
racket and charge 1.5 per cent
as commission. They have
been remanded to police custody
since May 12,” said joint
commissioner of police
(crime) Damayanti Sen.
She said the duo had
earned `1.1 crore from six
businessmen after taking `10
lakh-`15 lakh from each as
commission. “We are now
trying to find out of how
many businessmen are
involved in the racket.”
She said that on Thursday,
the duo called Mohka to their
office. “Mohka gave them `20
lakh and asked for a cheque.
But then he was caught in a
fight between the duo, who
accused one another of
cheating.”
Kolkata: Medical graduates
and postgraduates will now
be able to enrol for the
National Health Services
(NHS) in the UK, even sitting
in the city.
Offered under the Medical
programme is meant for a
small number of medical
graduates from different
parts of the world which will
give them an opportunity to
will be offered
through one of the leading
private healthcare providers
Peerless Hospital which is
the only examination centre
in eastern India.
Although it is an old programme,
there was no centre
in the state or other parts
