We were given the
initial theme
‘Leaving a mark’
and had to
develop this
through a personal
investigation
Theme development: possible ideas
From the previous mind map, I have chosen hands, to symbolise ‘leaving a mark’
Hand study in pencil
Thumbs up: this
used to symbolise
killing someone as
it resembled
holding a sword
Fist: this expresses
unity, strength and
resistance.
Clasping hands:
this shows that
someone is angry
or stressed

I have further developed the idea of ‘leaving a mark’ to ‘leaving the home’
I took photos of my mum and her hands in order to experiment with different poses and compositions
I have researched artists
that use maps in order to
develop my backgrounds.
I chose Manchester as
this is my hometown and
to symbolise my journey.
I love the energy in Johns work, these 2 paintings in particular remind
me of maps and I wanted to use these to inspire my backgrounds
My dad is from Ghana so I have included an African artist in order to portray him through my art; The similarities to Glover’s paintings and Johns
was a perfect match
Background idea: Experimenting with media and text
Experimenting with image maker to transfer maps onto the canvas
Background ideas for another canvas
Studying feathers in order to use them in future canvases to symbolise
leaving the nest
In order to make my
paintings look more
realistic, I have studied
the tone of flesh on my
hand
Experimentation for a new canvas
Rough canvas compositions
Final canvas compositions
