CLASSEN WINS THE
SUSTAINABILITY
AWARD IN LAS VEGAS
CERAMIN TISE 2022
That’s great!“,
says Derek Welbourn, Director of Sales and
Marketing for North America at CLASSEN.
Because at "The International Surface Event"
in Las Vegas, with 600 exhibitors one of the
largest trade fairs for floor coverings worldwide,
the CLASSEN Group received the "Best of
Sustainability / Disruption 2022" Award for its
floor coverings with the material CERAMIN.
The jury of experts recognised CERAMIN as a
particularly ecological and health-conscious
innovation in the flooring industry that is capable
of replacing previous technologies and products.
Derek Welbourn:
"With CERAMIN, yesterday's yoghurt cup is
today's flooring and tomorrow's garden chair.
This is unique and new in our industry. We are
therefore very proud that our products, and
with them the years of work by our developers
at CLASSEN, have been awarded the "Best of
Sustainability / Disruption 2022" award. And we
are convinced that CERAMIN is the material of
the future."
VISIOGRANDE BECOMES
WATER RESISTANT IN 2022
MAKING GOOD THINGS EVEN BETTER
In addition to four new exciting designs,
CLASSEN increases the everyday suitability
of the proven Visiogrande collection. Thanks
to the Megaloc Aqua Protect fast installation
system, the laminate tile is now perfectly
protected against water.
PROTECTION FOR DAILY LIVING:
MEGALOC AQUA PROTECT
Thanks to the patented Megaloc Aqua Protect
technology, the Visiogrande laminate tiles are
water-resistant, suitable for wet rooms and even
better protected against water penetration at
the joints. For a period of 24 hours, no water
penetrates down through the bevel of the edge
profiles. This means that Visiogrande can easily
withstand frequent exposure to cleaning or
splashing water and the risk that edges will swell
is greatly reduced. The subfloor is also protected
in this way.
This is demonstrated by the excellent results
in the standard test procedure according to
NALFA (North American Laminate Flooring
Association). CLASSEN carries out these tests
continuously in its own laboratory and also
regularly commissions external test laboratories
for this purpose. The tests examine how the
laminate tiles behave when installed, with the
surface exposed to standing water for 24 hours.
The results show that Visiogrande exceeds the
NALFA requirement.
In the tests, the surfaces also show a swelling
behaviour of the best possible rating class 1.
Visiogrande thus performs significantly better
than water-resistant laminate flooring from
competitors. Moreover, the Megaloc Aqua
Protect profile not only ensures a fast and easy
installation of the tiles, there is also love in the
detail: the bevelled edges of the joints on the
surface are matched in colour to the decor
pattern.
CASA
DURABLE LAMINATE FOR
A CAREFREE HOME
Under the motto "Your Home. Your
CASA.", another laminate collection was
introduced in 2022: CASA. The focus of
the development was on the versatile resilience
of the flooring for carefree living in modern
households.
Families with children, for example, will be
delighted with the laminate with the usage
classes 32 and 33, which are normally also used
in the commercial sector. This is because the
flooring can withstand both lively children's
games and falling toys, as well as children's
birthday parties with friends. Whether in the
children's room or in the office - the abrasion
classes 4 and 5 from CASA guarantee a long
lifetime for the floor covering, even with frequent
use.
LLT's tried-and-tested anti-scratch technology
makes this possible. The strengthened top layer
of the laminate planks is not only particularly
resistant to wear and micro-scratches, but the
matt gloss level of the surface also remains the
same for many years.
GETTING WET ALLOWED
No matter whether you splash, spill or shower
at home, thanks to the patented Megaloc Aqua
Protect technology, CASA laminate will not suffer.
The planks are water-resistant, even suitable
for the bathroom and protected against water
penetration at the joints. For a period of 24 hours,
no water penetrates down through the bevel of
the edge profiles, so that the risk of the edges
swelling is greatly reduced and the substrate of
the floor is also protected. Thus, there is no need
to worry about wet mopping and coming home
with wet rubber boots.
This is demonstrated by the excellent results in
the standard test procedure according to NALFA
(North American Laminate Flooring Association).
SAVE ENERGY WITH CASA
Saving energy will be more important than ever
in the coming winters, because 70 % of the total
energy consumed by private households is used
on average for heating. Accordingly, it makes
sense to recognise and use potential savings.
For example, choosing the right flooring can
provide additional support in saving energy. For
this reason, CLASSEN has tested the new CASA
collection in the laboratory for thermal resistance
and thermal conductivity.
AT THE END OF 2022, A FIFTH
COLLECTION JOINS THE CLASSEN CASA
COLLECTION.
However, CASA not only offers advantages
at a high technical level. The five collection
lines Classico, Originale, Grande, Ultimo
and Lounge inspire with a total of 34 authentic
wood decors, which form the right base for every
room ambience and ensure that you can simply
feel comfortable at home without any worries.
The angled bevels of the joints on the surface are
matched in colour to the design and thus create
a high-quality joint appearance.
The lower the thermal resistance, the better the
heat penetrates the floor and the room heats up
faster. This applies above all to households with
underfloor heating. The thermal conductivity
provides information about how quickly body
heat is transferred to the floor. A nice side effect:
the lower the thermal conductivity of a floor
covering, the longer the feet stay warm. The
result: the thermal resistance of the 7 mm thick
CASA laminate flooring from the CLASSICO
collection is reduced by 45 % compared to
of a 12 mm thick laminate floor. Also thermal
conductivity is also significantly lower with
CLASSICO. CLASSEN thus makes a contribution
to saving energy in households with underfloor
heating. The climate also benefits, because the
reduction to 7 mm not only saves energy, but
also less wood is needed in production.
And the feel-good decors from the CLASSEN
Design Centre can not only be experienced
with the eyes, but also felt with hand and foot:
Thanks to the detailed wood structure of the
surfaces, you can feel the fibres of the wood
decor individually. This is how CASA brings the
pleasant experience of nature into your own four
walls and at the same time benefits from the
high resilience and quality of a floor covering
from CLASSEN.
OPEN DAY
IN BARUTH
EXPERIENCE SUSTAINABILITY -
WIN LAMINATE FLOORING
With more than 800 employees, our
laminate plant in Baruth/Mark is
one of the largest employers in the
region. Anyone who has always wanted to see
the production in the world's most modern
factory for laminate flooring in action had the
best opportunity to do so on 17 September. The
company opened its doors as part of the "Day of
the Open Industrial Estate" and provided a deep
insight into sustainable production.
Almost everyone has probably seen or bought
CLASSEN laminate flooring on the shelves of DIY
stores. Last September, the employees showed
what the production of sustainable laminate
flooring looks like. Local residents, but above all
potential employees and trainees, were invited
to make extensive use of this opportunity.
Not only were they able to take a look at the
450,000 square metre factory, they were also
able to find out about training and other career
opportunities. CLASSEN employees were also
available to answer questions at the training and
job fair.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., CLASSEN offered barrierfree
factory tours. In addition, 30 square metres
of laminate were given away every hour, which
the winners could choose from the large
assortment. A free shuttle bus was available for
shuttles from Baruth/Mark railway station and
from the Brandenburger Urstromquelle for all
interested parties.
Representatives of the press were also cordially
invited to take this opportunity to get a first-hand
impression.
CERAMIN TILES
STYLISH, ROBUST, USEFUL,
AFFORDABLE: CERAMIN TILES IS
THE PERFECT TILE ALTERNATIVE
TO CERAMIC AND NATURAL STONE.
With the CERAMIN Tiles collection, we
were able to create a completely new
tile category. The healthy and 100%
recyclable alternative to ceramic tiles and natural
stone saves several thousand tonnes of CO2 per
year through the use of recycled materials. What
also makes the tiles particularly attractive for
do-it-yourselfers and craftsmen: CERAMIN Tiles
is comparatively thin, significantly lighter than
ceramic tiles and therefore very easy to install.
The new collection was presented at the end of
September 2022 on the occasion of the ceramics
and bathroom trade fair Cersaie in Bologna, but
could already be purchased in advance from
selected specialist retailers.
FAST RENOVATION WITH HEALTHY,
RECYCLABLE, ROBUST TILES
CERAMIN Tiles have been produced by the
CLASSEN Group since 2020 and are continuously
being further developed. They consist almost
exclusively of stone powder and polypropylene,
which in turn contains a high proportion of
recycled materials. But CERAMIN is far more
than "just" a resource-saving alternative to classic
materials. Thanks to the material characteristics,
the tiles are above all practical and easy to work
with. For example, despite their size of 2.55
metres × 1.20 metres, the Slab decors weigh
only 15 kilos, which makes them significantly
lighter than ceramic tiles and means they can be
installed by one person alone.
before
after
20

INNOVATIONS, DESIGN & MORE
MINIMAL RENOVATION EFFORT
THANKS TO GLUING ON EXISTING TILES
"Due to the product characteristics, CERAMIN is
actually a completely new tile category for us",
says Stefan Müller, Managing Director of "Müller
- die Badgestalter" and member of the SHK
eG. " CERAMIN tiles create a pleasant feeling of
well-being in the home. The surface is warmer
than ceramic or stone and the decors deliver
an authentic natural stone look." Above all, the
tiles are designed for easy and fast installation.
"And they are easy to clean because they have no
joints, only visible edges," Müller adds.
The tiles are available with a tongue and groove
system and with straight edges for traditional
tile joints. They can be installed without dust
and noise, flexibly adjusted with a cutter knife
and have very short drying times. Above all, they
can also be installed on old, existing tiles. The
effort required for the renovation of complete
bathrooms or individual wet areas is thus
minimal.
CERAMIN Tiles are completely dimensionally
stable. This means that they stay in shape, are
UV-resistant and waterproof. In addition, the
slip resistance (rating group R10/B) is identical
to other high-quality ceramic and natural stone
tiles. CERAMIN Tiles can be easily cleaned with all
commercially available cleaning agents.
SUSTAINABILITY
REPORT
FIRST SUSTAINABILITY REPORT UNDER
THE MOTTO "FLOORS FOR A BETTER
TOMORROW".
The CLASSEN Group is committed to the
development and production of healthy
floor and wall coverings. For the family-run
company with its more than 2,000 employees,
long-term sustainability has been directly linked
to sustainable management for more than 50
years. The development of the material CERAMIN
illustrates this. It provides the basis for recyclable
and resource-saving floor and wall coverings.
Efforts to achieve sustainability cover all areas
of the value chain - from the use of resources
and production to application and recycling.
Independent environmental seals such as the
"Blue Angel" or the eco-Institut label confirm this.
"With the voluntarily prepared sustainability
report, we are taking account of our own
claim to always be one step ahead in terms of
innovation, technology and sustainability",
says founder and CEO Dr Hans-Jürgen Hannig.
"For us, sustainability is a great matter of course
and is the basis for the existence of our planet
and thus of future generations."
PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENT IN
FOCUS: CO2 REDUCTION, RESOURCE
CONSERVATION AND RECYCLING
The report covers the areas of product quality
and safety, sustainable product development
and packaging, responsible procurement,
circular economy and CO2 savings. The successes
in the consistent reduction of CO2 emissions,
for example, are due to process improvements
at all locations. In 2020 and 2021 alone, more
than 13,000 tonnes of CO2 were saved. Among
other things, the world's largest laminate plant
in Baruth (Brandenburg) relied on a technology
patented by CLASSEN itself during the plant
conversion. A very typical process for the
company.
This also applies to the careful use of resources.
In addition to using only FSC® (FSC C100583)
and PEFC (PEFC/04-31-0824) certified wood -
usually from the immediate surroundings - this
also applies to the continuously increasing use
of recycled materials and the construction of its
own energy centre. In this way, the company has
already largely detached itself from fossil energy
sources such as oil and gas at an early stage.
Instead, the CLASSEN Group relies on thermal
energy from production residues and energy
recovery from used wood. A far-sighted step
that has helped the the company in the current
energy crisis the greatest possible freedom and
complete independence in the supply of heat
supply.
23

TRADE FAIR
PRESENTATION
WITHOUT WASTE
INNOVATIONS, DESIGN & MORE
SHOWCASE OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY
THROUGH COOPERATION WITH CLASSEN
On 19 October, K 2022, the world's largest
trade fair for the plastics and rubber
industry, began in Düsseldorf. One of the
exhibitors: the battenfeld cincinnati Group, one
of the oldest mechanical engineering companies
manufacturing extrusion lines for the plastics
industry. The company has been pursuing
a consistent sustainability strategy for years.
This also applies to its trade fair presentation
in Düsseldorf. Therefore, a CERAMIN floor
from the CLASSEN Group was chosen for the
approximately 350 sqm stand. The pollutantfree
and robust floor not only consists of a high
proportion of recycled plastics, it was also 100%
recycled after the trade fair appearance. It was
then processed into new flooring at the CLASSEN
plant in Kaisersesch. The two technology leaders
are thus a trend-setting example for the circular
economy in the industry.
PERFECT ALTERNATIVE TO
HARMFUL PVC FLOOR COVERINGS
In June, battenfeld-cincinnati selected the
floor from the extensive CERAMIN range and
decided on "Vevey" as the matching article. The
production of the 350 square metres provided by
CLASSEN as part of the cooperation took place
in September, the delivery and installation at the
Düsseldorf trade fair at the beginning of October.
After the end of the trade fair, the CERAMIN floor
was removed, packed and transported to the
CLASSEN Group's main factory in Kaisersesch.
Here, the floor was chopped up and extruded
into new CERAMIN granulate so that it could
be used to create new flooring again without
any loss of quality. A prime example of resource
conservation, sustainability and circular economy
in the field of flooring. Many fields of application
are still dominated by PVC-containing design
and vinyl floors, which are problematic in
production, application and disposal.
HC PLASTICS
NEW PLASTICS RECYCLING PLANT OF
HC PLASTICS SETS STANDARDS
On 24 November 2022, HC Plastics GmbH
invited guests to the launch of the new
recycling plant at the Swisttal site. The
newly founded company is a joint venture of
the two family businesses W. Classen GmbH &
Co. KG and Hündgen Entsorgungs GmbH & Co.
KG, operators of a recycling park with technical
facilities for the recovery of recyclable materials.
In future, recyclable raw materials, especially
polyolefin-based plastics, will be recycled and
processed into secondary raw materials at the
new plant. Mayor Petra Kalkbrenner officially
opened the plant.
CLASSEN and Hündgen are introducing a new
era of plastics recycling with the opening of the
plant in Swisttal. For the floor manufacturer
from the Eifel region, high-quality PP recyclates
are the basis for the production of its CERAMIN
floors. Hündgen's expertise in the recycling of
secondary raw materials provides the perfect
complement. Both companies are combining
their many years of experience and sustainability
expertise in HC Plastics GmbH, which was
founded in 2021. The cooperation is based on the
motto "Recycling meets Industry, Industry meets
Recycling".
For the family-run CLASSEN Group with its
approximately 2,000 employees, responsibility
for people and the environment is one of
its fundamental values. With CERAMIN, the
company has developed a polymer-based
material that forms the basis for PVC-free,
extremely robust wall and floor coverings. All
CERAMIN products have been certified with
the renowned, independent "Blue Angel"
environmental seal. Throughout Germany, the
company has a production capacity of almost
20 million square metres for the high-quality
synthetic floorings it sells internationally.
In addition to the use of recycled materials,
CLASSEN's main objective is to ensure the
complete recyclability of CERAMIN floors and
tiles. In the future, the secondary raw materials
used will mainly come from the new HC Plastics
GmbH plant. An important contribution to
independence in the entire value chain.
A COVENANT BEYOND
THE LIFETIME CYCLE
"Sustainability is much more than the bare
survivability of business models",
says Simon Schumacher (CLASSEN), Managing
Director of HC Plastics GmbH. The waste
management company from Swisttal is
a technology leader in the field of circular
economy, in which material cycles are closed as
far as possible by making waste available to the
economy again as secondary raw materials. For
almost 30 years, the company has specialised
in sorting packaging waste, which is then
processed into industrial primary products in its
own recycling plants.
"Together with the CLASSEN Group, we will
initiate a new era in plastics recycling with the
UPCYCLING OF PLASTIC FOILS INTO
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WALL
AND FLOOR COVERINGS
Following the opening ceremony, the attending
guests were able to get an overview of the
modern recycling processes during a guided tour
of the HC Plastics plant, which currently employs
ten full-time staff. Many waste products, such as
yogurt cups or jelly bear wrappers, were probably
very familiar to the visitors from everyday life.
PP foil was previously considered more or less
unsuitable for recycling due to its soft and loose
material composition. Therefore, the foil was
usually incinerated - with the corresponding
consequences that the raw material is no longer
available for the cycle after disposal.
The new sorting technology of HC Plastics
now makes it possible to further process the
material into a secondary raw material, which in
turn largely forms the basis for CERAMIN floors
and tiles of the CLASSEN Group. In this way,
supposedly worthless plastics are upcycled into
a durable, robust and environmentally friendly
product that is itself 100% recyclable. A perfect
example of the circular economy.
TECHNOLOGIES
Water resistance and the easy removal of already
installed planks are the new features of the of the
tried-and-tested fold-down locking system.
The CLASSEN Group's Megaloc systems have
proven themselves in the flooring industry for 16
years. And now CLASSEN is taking the next step
and expanding the Megaloc portfolio with two
new variants. And it's not just CLASSEN that is
set to benefit from the technological advances:
The family-owned company is now making
Megaloc "next generation" combines the positive
characteristics of the previous Megaloc locking
system for the laminate floors in the CLASSEN
range in a new system. It is water-resistant like
the established Megaloc Aqua Protect and does
not allow water to penetrate through the joints
of the edge profiles even after 48 hours. As a
result, it effortlessly withstands frequent use by
cleaning or splashing water. In addition, a new,
patented design of the head edge system makes
it easy to re-connect planks that have already
been joined without destroying them: the head
edges are simply folded apart.
In recent years, CLASSEN was prevented from
marketing the Megaloc systems independently
by a contractual exclusivity with a patent
exploitation company. After its end, CLASSEN
is now able to offer its superior technology for
all product groups under licence to interested
producers. By being able to easily apply the
new technology to all products in the market,
CLASSEN is once again setting the standard for
durable flooring throughout the industry. For
SYNCHRONOUS STRUCTURE FOR A
HAPTIC EXPERIENCE
Whereas just a few years ago most floors
had a smooth and glossy surface as
standard, modern production and
embossing processes now enable authentic
surface structures. After all, the right surface
structure is the essential thing to make a floor
covering look as true to the original as possible..
The surface is always individually matched to the
underlying decor and wood grains or knots as
well as stone textures are highlighted by heights
and depths in the surface texture. So the texture
not only looks like the original, but also feels like
it.
WHAT'S IN, WHAT'S OUT,
WHAT STAYS?
Following the current furnishing and design
trends does not mean that you have to buy
new furniture or other furnishings every
year. In 2023, you will encounter three design
trends in particular that look very similar at first
glance, but differ in subtle nuances. This much
can be said in advance: sustainability is still on
the rise, the cosiness we have come to love is
being loosened up with a new twist and things
are getting colourful!
51

SUSTAINABILITY
In 2023, it's all about sustainable interior design
that avoids unnecessary waste: "Sustainability"
is still on the rise. Upcycling traditional, classic
furniture or antiques in combination with
modern furniture, complemented by natural
retro colours, creates a whole new look in your
home.
Supported by a CERAMIN-based floor covering,
which also focuses on "low waste" as it is made
of already recycled material, a uniform and
consistent interior design is created.

COMFORT ZONE
Earth and natural colours, which gained
popularity during the pandemic due to
their calming effect and associations with
nature, are still predominant in 2023. However,
they are now complemented by a colour twist
and natural materials such as stone, bamboo or
wool. This makes them part of a trend that will
accompany us all in 2023: "comfort zone".
Round shapes and cosy furniture convey a
feeling of security as well as serenity and create a
homely atmosphere within your own four walls.
Although white and neutral colours dominate,
they are complemented by accessories in
cheerful, warm tones. Matching: a laminate or
CERAMIN-based floor in wood or tile look, but
with a foot-warming surface, which supports the
homely atmosphere of the room.

2023
ATMOSPHERE
The future is colourful. Completely white
rooms are disappearing more and more.
Colourful contrasts and warmth are to
ensure the 3rd interior design trend in 2023:
„Atmosphere“.
After the pandemic, a home should no longer
appear clinical and cold, but radiate warmth.
Accents in warm brown tones or saturated
colours such as fir green or the current trend
colour "digital lavender" are increasingly used
to create different colour dimensions. Speaking
of green: to create the perfect atmosphere,
plants are of course also a must in 2023. And
what applies to plants also applies to flooring.
It, too, can be green. So how about a new
CERAMIN-based floor covering? Made from
already recycled materials, equipped with
natural designs and surfaces and 100 % Made in
Germany.

INNOVATIONS, DESIGN & MORE
CLASSEN CONTINUES
TO FOCUS ON
DIGITAL PRINTING
FOR A GOOD REASON
CLASSEN has been using Hymmen's singlepass
Jupiter technology for years and now
finishes its floors with five digital printing
lines. Two digital printers are currently in use at
the Baruth site. This means that CLASSEN prints
30 % of its entire laminate products digitally.
Whereas in Kaisersesch, CLASSEN completely
utilises digital printing for the production of its
PVC-free CERAMIN products.
OUR
THE FOUNDATION OF SUCCESSFUL
DIGITAL PRINTING
All our digitally printed decors are designed in
our design centre in Kaisersesch. Our designers
are constantly searching for new trends and
exclusive materials. Sometimes they travel
to other countries, sometimes they explore
our forests nearby - always striving for new
inspiration.
Our digitally printed decors include beautiful
oaks from regional forests and therefore also
unique stones from Italy.
As soon as suitable new material is found, it
is scanned in Kaisersesch and finally digitally
processed for printing.
