The Chesham Society:putting Chesham first for 65 yearsIn 2022 The Chesham Society reached an impressivemilestone: its 65th anniversary.Our Civic Society was formed at a time whenChesham was undergoing dramatic change with the lossof the Old Town Hall and the threat to demolish parts ofChurch Street. The Society was founded by people wholoved Chesham and were determined that, in shaping itsfuture, the people who lived and worked here wouldhave their say.Sixty-five years on, with regeneration high on theagenda and big plans in the offing, the Society is stillmaking a unique and useful contribution to the town.Special projects and regular activities have kept thecommittee and members particularly busy in recentmonths. In addition to monitoring and commenting onsignificant planning applications, core activities includealerting members to the progress of theBuckinghamshire Local Plan, the Neighbourhood Planand other major initiatives such as the CheshamRenaissance proposals for Star Yard.Heritage Open Days is one of the Society’s very specialprojects. We take the lead in planning and coordinatingChesham’s biannual programme of events which opensup places of interest that are normally closed to thepublic, for everyone to visit free of charge. The Societyalso gets together with other local groups to pool ideasand come up with new initiatives for the good of thetown. We are currently working with Chesham Connecton a new website called Visit Chesham and Villages,designed to promote local businesses, shops andattractions and remind residents and visitors that there ismuch to enjoy in and around the town.For an annual subscription of just £16.00, membersof the Society enjoy a calendar of talks, walks and socialevents such as the convivial Christmas supper, or theImages of Chesham photo day which brought togetherarchive photographs from a number of collections forthe very first time. The Society’s members also receivequarterly editions of Focus, a 20-page magazine packedwith features on Chesham people and places past andpresent.If you are interested in knowing more of what goeson in Chesham or would like to get involved in any ofthese activities, just visit the Chesham Society websiteand take out membership online.
