Limpopo, the northern most province of South Africa, offers the outdoor enthusiast a multitude of options
from guest houses, lodges, game reserves and farm-stay accommodation to
magnificent hiking trails that range across the entire province. The winter months are the best time to
explore this beautiful area as the temperatures can soar into the mid to upper 30’s
during summer months and can be unpleasantly humid. The area is dominated by the
magnificent Waterberg Soutpansberg and Drakensberg mountain ranges, each providing
unequalled opportunities to enjoy your type of eco-tourism. In this issue we take the

Bushcamps, Game Reserves, Lodges and Guest Houses
Red Mountain Country House
Rooiberg is a former Tin mining village which is accessed by way of the R516, the tarred road that runs
between Thabazimbi and Bela Bela (Warmbaths). The village is made up of the
different former mine buildings, all beautifully restored. Rooiberg is home to Red Mountain
Country House, a period building that tells the tale of the glory of the heyday of mining in South Africa.
The house offers 12 double rooms with either bed and breakfast or full board options.
Explore the spacious grounds on foot or do the more energetic option of walking the newly

Leshiba Wilderness
Another gem in the Limpopo Province, Leshiba is situated about 40km west of Louis Trichardt among
the peaks of the beautiful Soutpansberg mountain range. There is accommodation to suite every person’s
pocket including the stunning Venda Village that offers luxury with the tang of ethnicity. After an
exploration of the reserve on foot or a game drive, sit and relax on the pool deck and watch the Rhino
come down to the waterhole to drink. There is a variety of trails that span the area and include a kloof
walk that passes through a stunning gorge with rock pools and water cascades. For more information

Mateke Game Farm
Travel north on the R510 from Thabazimbi and then take the Diamant gravel road which takes you
along the border of Marakele National Park. Along this road you will come across the 2000ha Mateke
Game Farm which must rank as one of the best examples of African Bushveld in South Africa. The perennial
Mamba River provides a focal point for the reserve with its
crystal clear rock pools, its cascades and the wide variety of indigenous vegetation that forms the verdant
cover for most of the reserve. Wildlife is also quite plentiful and includes troops of naughty monkeys
and baboons that are always opportunists when they see food left
unattended. Accommodation on offer takes several forms, from a basic tree house for hikers to wellequipped
chalets. Things to do on the farm include 4x4, hiking and game viewing on foot. For more
