Limpopo, the northern most province of South Africa, offers the outdoor enthusiast a multitude of options
from guest houses, lodges, game reserves and farm-stay accommodation to
magnificent hiking trails that range across the entire province. The winter months are the best time to
explore this beautiful area as the temperatures can soar into the mid to upper 30’s
during summer months and can be unpleasantly humid. The area is dominated by the
magnificent Waterberg Soutpansberg and Drakensberg mountain ranges, each providing
unequalled opportunities to enjoy your type of eco-tourism. In this issue we take the
opportunity of looking at places to stay.
Bushcamps, Game Reserves, Lodges and Guest Houses
Red Mountain Country House
Rooiberg is a former Tin mining village which is accessed by way of the R516, the tarred road that runs
between Thabazimbi and Bela Bela (Warmbaths). The village is made up of the
different former mine buildings, all beautifully restored. Rooiberg is home to Red Mountain
Country House, a period building that tells the tale of the glory of the heyday of mining in South Africa.
The house offers 12 double rooms with either bed and breakfast or full board options.
Explore the spacious grounds on foot or do the more energetic option of walking the newly
developed hiking trail. A cocktail can also be enjoyed around the crystal clear swimming pool. For
more information click here.
Leshiba Wilderness
Another gem in the Limpopo Province, Leshiba is situated about 40km west of Louis Trichardt among
the peaks of the beautiful Soutpansberg mountain range. There is accommodation to suite every person’s
pocket including the stunning Venda Village that offers luxury with the tang of ethnicity. After an
exploration of the reserve on foot or a game drive, sit and relax on the pool deck and watch the Rhino
come down to the waterhole to drink. There is a variety of trails that span the area and include a kloof
walk that passes through a stunning gorge with rock pools and water cascades. For more information
Mateke Game Farm
Travel north on the R510 from Thabazimbi and then take the Diamant gravel road which takes you
along the border of Marakele National Park. Along this road you will come across the 2000ha Mateke
Game Farm which must rank as one of the best examples of African Bushveld in South Africa. The perennial
Mamba River provides a focal point for the reserve with its
crystal clear rock pools, its cascades and the wide variety of indigenous vegetation that forms the verdant
cover for most of the reserve. Wildlife is also quite plentiful and includes troops of naughty monkeys
and baboons that are always opportunists when they see food left
unattended. Accommodation on offer takes several forms, from a basic tree house for hikers to wellequipped
chalets. Things to do on the farm include 4x4, hiking and game viewing on foot. For more
information click here.
Choosing a backpack is not as simple of a process as you might think. Modern backpacks are
designed to offer comfort, balance, versatility and load-carrying proficiency. But you have to do some
planning when it comes to choosing a backpack that fits your needs.
There are some questions you must keep in mind when shopping for backpacks. This month we focus
on internal frames.
What is Your Hiking Style?
Depending on what type of hiking you do plus the weight of the loads you will be carrying will determine
the type of hiking backpack you will need. Generally your choices will be internal frame.
Internal frames have a snug fit which allows your load to move with you. This helps with balance and
agility on uneven terrain. Though not designed specifically for heavy loads on easy terrain, recreational
backpackers have also grown to prefer internals, for their comfort and versatility.
Internal Frame Hiking Backpacks
Internal frames are the preferred backpack of:
• Climbers/Mountaineers
• Scramblers
• Skiers
• Off-trail hikers (rough terrain)
Internal frames are narrow and tall. The framework is built inside the pack behind the shoulder
harness. The frame is made of flat bars called "stays". Stays are usually made of aluminum and are
configured in a V-shape. Stays can also be made of composite materials and be aligned parallel, xshaped
or u-shaped. The stays can be bent by hand to conform to your body or you can let them
shape to your body naturally by frequent use.
Advantages of Internal Frame Hiking Backpacks
• Compression straps on internal frames keep your load stable. This keeps individual items held
tight together keeping them from shifting and throwing you off-balance if you make any sudden
moves.
• Internals hug your body and keeps your pack closer to your center of gravity. This helps keep
your balance.
• Stays allow the pack to move with your body since they are stiff and not rigid. Giving you more
flexibility.
• Internals frames offer more maneuverability since they are slimmer in shape, allowing you to
swing your arms freely. Great for climbers, skiers and also off-trail hikers who may need to
squeeze through tight spots.
• Internals frames shoulder harness and hip belts can be adjusted more so than external frames.
For a better fit.
• Internal frame hiking backpacks are more expensive than external frames.
Disadvantages of Internal Frame Hiking Backpacks
• Internal frames can be less convenient if you need to find a particular item from your hiking
backpack. This is because they usually lack outside pockets and they feature one big storage
area that you will need to search through.
• You can count on having a sweaty back since it sits right on your back.
• Internal frame hiking backpacks are a bit expensive but you will buy an asset when buying an
internal.
Don’t’ ditch the taste just because you’re backpacking
Making your own backpacking meals is a great option compared to buying expensive freeze-
dried or dehydrated meals. Many backpacking and hiking recipes consist of less expensive, basic
foods that can be found at most grocery stores, such as dried milk, rice, or pasta.
I came across this interesting snack when I was searching for backpacking recipes. At first I thought it was quite
odd for a snack to be called Bark but after reading what Bark actually is, I thought the name suits the snack rather
well.
What is Bark?
While working on food dehydrator recipes for mashed potatoes, I blended boiled potatoes and broth to a smoothielike
consistency and spread the mixture thinly on dehydrator trays. The potatoes dried into
brittle sheets that easily broke into what I call, "Bark."
Potato Bark tasted pretty good as a ready-to-eat snack, especially Sweet Potato Bark, but with the
addition of hot water, the Bark reconstituted back into mashed potatoes. I varied the flavor by blending the potatoes
with vegetable, chicken, or beef broth.
Why Bark?
• When you cook and rehydrate Bark with other vegetables and meat, your backpacking meal turns into a thick
stew with flavorful sauciness.
• Because you make Bark from starchy foods high in complex carbohydrates, your hearty meal will power you
up the next mountain with calories to spare.
• Bark makes a great backpacking food because it weighs in at a couple of ounces per serving dry. Five kilograms
of potatoes barks down to just 50g.
• If you run out of fuel or water, you can munch on Bark dry. Bark will reconstitute right in your mouth. Pumpkin
Pie Bark goes in like a chip and down like pie.
How to Make Potato Bark:
• 1kg of potatoes
• 50g of fat free vegetable, beef, or chicken broth
• Salt and Pepper to taste
Optional: Garlic Powder to taste
Peel and boil the 1kg of potatoes until soft. Drain.
Mash potatoes with the 50g of fat free vegetable, beef, or chicken broth. Because fats and dairy products
don’t dehydrate well and can spoil, do not add any milk or butter. Add salt, if desired, but you’ll
get some sodium from the broth.
Run the mashed potatoes through a blender or mixer until creamy and lump-free.
Cover trays with non-stick sheets or parchment paper.
Pour a 40mm puddle of potatoes onto the covered tray and spread thinly (about 20mm) with a spatula.
Dehydrate at 135° for approximately eight hours unt il potatoes form a brittle sheet.
After about five hours of drying, place a tray on top of the potato sheet and flip the two trays over so
that the moister bottom side is facing up.
The dried sheet of potatoes will easily snap into Bark or crush down for tighter packing.
Yield: 1kg of potatoes will dehydrate down to 100 grams and fill two cups when crushed.
Answer: Marty Jones: We can rule out Fred from
our investigations as he was the victim. Brian Martin
owns a green car. The murderer owns a black car,
so Brian Martin is not the murderer. The suspect
who owns a black car was wearing blue shoes. The
suspect who weighs 190 pounds was wearing blue
shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds is not
the one who has red hair. Therefore, one suspect
was wearing blue shoes, owns a black car, weighs
190 pounds, and is not the one who has red hair.
But Bill Edison was wearing brown shoes, John Fox
has red hair, Larry Smith weighs 210 pounds, and
Brian Martin owns a green car. Therefore, the only
suspect who could be this suspect is Marty Jones.
Since this suspect, Marty Jones, owns a black car
and the murderer owns a black car, he is the murderer.
