Simon Averill (b. 1961)Albert Einstein’s ‘spooky action at adistance’ theory referred to the subject of‘quantum entanglement’. This principlehas inspired this ongoing series of pairedpaintings by Simon Averill. Quantumentanglement is a physical phenomenonwhich occurs when pairs or groups ofparticles are generated, interact, or sharespatial proximity in ways such that thequantum state of each particle cannot bedescribed independently of the state ofthe other(s), even when the particles areseparated by a large distance—instead, aquantum state must be described for thesystem as a whole. Physicist and feministtheorist Karen Barad coined the term‘intra-action’ to describe the concept of‘entanglement’, (not only of fundamentalparticles but of all material, matter, of natureand of meaning). There is a distinction to bemade between intra-action and interaction;when bodies interact they retain a degreeof independence, each entity existed beforethe encounter. When intra-action occursindividuals materialise and agency emergesfrom within the relationship not outside ofit. These works further enhance Averill’sreputation for attempting to record elusive,transitory yet fundamental phenomena.Produced through a multi layered, processof glazing where methodical and repetitiveseries’ of motifs, are used to describeintangible potentials.Simon Averill is a British artist born inBrighton, England in 1961. He currentlylives and works near Marazion in WestCornwall. Averill studied Fine Artat Brighton Polytechnic and graduatedwith Honours. In 1986 he established aPrintmaking Workshop near Penzance,Cornwall, which he ran until 1990. Hehas been a member of the Newlyn Societyof Artists since the late 1980s. Averillhas exhibited widely with exhibitions inthe UK, Europe and USA including theRoyal Academy of Arts Summer Show,The Discerning Eye exhibition at the MallGalleries, Royal West of England Academyin Bristol, Sherborne House, PlymouthMuseum, Plymouth Arts Centre, TruroMuseum, Falmouth Art Gallery, Newlyn ArtGallery and the Festival Hall in Chicago,USA.
