Coach’s Column
COACH’S COLUMN
DARYL POWELL
WE’RE FOUR FROM FOUR GOING INTO TONIGHT’S GAME AND
WE’VE HAD TO WIN EACH MATCH SO FAR IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
THE PLAYERS HAVE RESPONDED BRILLIANTLY TO WHAT’S BEEN
THROWN AT THEM.
It’s going to be a different game again
tonight against Leigh and a tough
challenge. We played them in pre-season
and they’ve recruited well to assemble a
really good squad of players. They came
after us physically from the off in that preseason
match and we had to ride through
a fair bit to come out on top.
I’m excited to have Joe Philbin back in the
squad tonight. He’s worked exceptionally
hard and he’s an example for anybody
who’s going through a tough period of how
to approach it. He’s had a positive mindset
right from the start when he injured his
knee. He got straight into his rehab and
has been busting out of his skin to work
hard and rise above the adversity. He’s done
fantastic to get himself in this position now
and I’m excited to see him back out there.
It’s been tough in the middle unit for us
with injuries and there’s a few players
who are doing some big minutes for
us out there. All the middles have been
exceptional for us so far and have to be
commended for what they’ve done. They’ve
got another big job tonight because
Leigh’s pack is very good and John Asiata
at the moment is one of the best front-row
players in the competition.
At both our home and away games so
far our fans have been exceptional. Even
though there weren’t quite as many at Hull
KR last week they really got behind the
team and it was great to see the scenes at
the end with the players going over to the
fans. Home games are hugely important
to us and we want to get this place full
and buzzing with everyone enjoying what
they’re seeing.
Enjoy the game,
Daryl

Welcome... The Big Interview...
THE BIG INTERVIEW...
BEN CURRIE
BEN CURRIE IS CELEBRATING HIS TESTIMONIAL YEAR IN 2023 - HIS 12TH
SEASON IN PRIMROSE AND BLUE. THE SECOND-ROWER LOOKS AHEAD
TO TONIGHT’S CLASH AGAINST THE NEWLY-PROMOTED LEOPARDS.
Ben, it was a hard-fought win
last time out against Hull KR.
How do you look back on that
game now?
It was a very tough game and we
had spoken beforehand that we
knew it would be. It’s a difficult
place to go is Hull KR, they always
test the opposition and not many
teams get a result away there.
It was a great result for us to go
there and get the two points.
The win maintained our 100%
winning start to the season.
Confidence must be high
around the place?
Definitely, it’s been a great start
for us. It’s really positive to be
four from four. The team morale
is really high around the camp
but we’re focused on staying
grounded and not getting ahead
of ourselves. It’s a long season and
there’s many games to go. It’ll be
a tough game against Leigh and
it’s about knuckling down and
getting ready to go.
A lot has been said about the
middles that have come in.
What’s it like playing alongside
this pack?
It definitely helps us with the
big boys that we’ve signed.
Vaughany [Paul Vaughan] has
been outstanding, Big Kas [Sam
Kasiano] and the likes of Bull [Joe
Bullock] have been performing
really well for us. We’re a bit light
on troops in the middle and
seem to be gaining one and then
losing one to injury. Some of the
minutes these boys are playing
is unbelievable and they’re really
digging in. Hopefully they keep
going well for us.
What are you expecting from
Leigh tonight?
They’re going to be a really
dangerous team. They’re coming
here full of confidence having
won the last two and the win over
Saints last week. Obviously we
played them in my Testimonial
game not too long ago and they

the WIRE // 7
were really good then and drove
us all the way. It’s going to be
tough but it’s one we’re looking
forward to.
How do you look back on your
Testimonial game now?
I don’t often like being the main
man at the game and I was extra
nervous that week in the buildup.
Looking back it was such an
amazing event for me and my
family and to carry my little girl
out was just the icing on the cake.
Joe Philbin is back in the
matchday squad tonight. You’ve
been through the rigours of
recovering from an ACL injury
twice yourself. How pleased are
you to see him return?
I’ve come through the other
side of that injury myself twice.
There’s a certain session you have
to tick off before you return to
play which he went through last
week. It took me back to having
done those twice over. He’s come
through it, his preparation has
been good and he’s there now
fully fit and raring to go.
Finally, our Warrington Wolves
Foundation celebrate their
18th birthday tonight. How
good have they been in driving
inclusivity and engaging with
the community?
It’s amazing what they do there.
Over my time at the Wolves I’ve
been fortunate enough to spend
a bit of with the Foundation.
What they do for the community
and this club is outstanding.
There’s some big and funny
characters on their projects. I’ve
got lots of respect for everything
they do and wish them all the
best for the future.

A total of 11 signings have been
many familiar names with no
fewer than seven former Wire
players - Oliver Holmes, Matt Davis,
Jacob Gannon, Robbie Mulhern,
some other experienced signings
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Josh Charnley Zak Hardaker Ricky Leutele
Former Wire winger Josh
Charnley returns back to
the HJ in a competitive
fixture for the first time
since his departure last
June. The former Grand
Final winner with Wigan
has just been granted
a Testimonial from his
service to the sport. He
has scored in every game
so far with his best one
coming a fortnight ago
at Craven Park to win the
game for the Leopards on
the last play of the match.
Influential full-back Zak
Hardaker is one of the
key components to the
Leigh outfit this year after
spending the second half
of the season last year
with Leeds and getting
them to the Super League
Grand Final. The two-time
Grand Final winner and
Man of Steel in 2015 has
scored one try so far this
year while making over
400 meters.
Samoa international Ricky
Leutele joins the Leopards
after a very successful
spell at Huddersfield in
the last couple of seasons
and he wants to bring
his form to Adrian Lam’s
side. The winger has made
nearly 400 meters so far
this season with the one
try to his name and with
an average gain of 10.22
metres.

14 // the WIRE //
Warrington
Guardian
THIS GAME HAS ALL THE INGREDIENTS OF A CRACKER.
In the primrose and blue corner, we have a side
brimming with confidence having started the
season in a manner not even the most optimistic
of supporters would have predicted.
Let’s be honest, not many called a four-from-four
start for Wire but they have answered every single
question thrown their way so far.
Can you completely dominate and blitz a side?
Absolutely, see Round One…
Can you tough it out when backs are against the
wall? Sure thing, see Huddersfield in Round Two
and Hull KR last week.
Can you retrieve a pretty substantial deficit in both
scoreline and performance? Of course, Exhibit A on
that front being the turnaround from a pretty poor
first half against Salford the last time we were all here.
It is almost as if the next test is one they will want
to put off for as long as possible – how will they
respond to losing a game?
Every team loses games and barring something
truly special and almost miraculous happening,
it’s going to happen to Wire at some point in the
coming weeks and months.
We keep hearing about the mentality, fortitude and
togetherness of this group and its shining through
so far, but responding to a defeat is the next big
examination of those qualities.
Aiming to inflict that hardship on Warrington for
the first time this year will be the team standing in
the red and white corner, who are looking to get a
bit of a monkey off their back,
In their former guise as the Centurions, Leigh
visited this stadium five times and on each
occasion, they left defeated – some of the games
were close, some of them less so.
Following their much-discussed rebrand, however,
the Leopards prowl into town no doubt feeling this is
their best chance of getting a win on this ground for
a while and doing so will only serve to increase their
argument that they are in Super League to stay.
That case is growing stronger by the week,
especially after their victory over world champions
St Helens last time out – a result that made a lot of
people sit up and take notice.
And with a plethora of former Warrington players
in their ranks that will be itching to prove a point to
the club that let them go, it adds to the element of
danger this fixture poses for the home side.
To say it is a “banana skin” is arguably doing the
visitors too much of a disservice – this is a genuinely
intriguing contest between two sides in good form
and while Wire will probably start as favourites, you
get the sense it could go either way.
When these two sides met in pre-season, you
could have been forgiven for thinking it was a full
competitive fixture such was the intensity of the
contest.
With points now on the line, it really is an exciting
fixture.
CHAIR’S TEAM TALK: PETE ASTLEY MBE
FOUNDATION NEWS
// the WIRE // 23
When I took over as Chair of The Warrington
Wolves Foundation in 2019, I never expected the
challenges that have faced us all. A pandemic
that isolated our most vulnerable, affecting all of
our community; from schools to care homes, to
all community clubs and sports teams.
Challenging times certainly, but if there is
something that I have learnt through Rugby
League, it is maintaining resilience and the benefits
of teamwork. The Foundation has risen to these
challenges in a remarkable way, delivering so much
and I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you
to them and what they do.
A registered charity (1110734), and the official charity
of the Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club, the
Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation changes
lives through sport. They do this by delivering
innovative Rugby League, Disability & Health &
Wellbeing projects designed to encourage people
of all ages to make positive lifestyle choices. Using
the power of the Warrington Wolves badge, they
engage, enthuse, and inspire the local community to
create a healthier and more resilient community.
As a charity, the Foundation cannot be funded by
Warrington Wolves Rugby Club so rely on donations
from wonderful supporters like YOU, income from
fundraising events, along with grants from various
organisations such as The National Lottery, Children
in Need, Sport England, Active Cheshire, NHS,
Cheshire Community Foundation, to enable them
to continue their fantastic work in Warrington and
Cheshire. Whether it be the first introduction to
Rugby League through our primary school delivery,
running a weekly youth club for young people
with disabilities or additional needs, using sport to
help tackle men’s health and isolation or helping
to reduce anti-social social behaviour through our
partnership with Cheshire Police; the Foundation
offer over 30 different projects designed to involve
people throughout their life course.
For information about any of the Foundation’s work
or for opportunities to get involved, please visit www.
warringtonwolvesfoundation.com. If you would like
to make a donation that will literally help change
(and in some cases, save) lives, please click here.
Your donations make an enormous difference to the
Warrington community.
Our Warrington Wolves Foundation celebrate their
18th birthday next month! The Foundation will
be showcasing some of their award-winning and
groundbreaking projects around the concourses
during tonight’s game.
