Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author best known
for her children's novel Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery
wrote over 20 novels, 500 short stories, 500 poems and
numerous essays. She was born in Clifton, Prince Edward
Island, and was an avid reader, writing her first poem at the
age of 10. Montgomery attended Prince of Wales College,
where she studied literature, and later taught school in various
places before returning to Prince Edward Island to settle down.
She wrote her first novel, Anne of Green Gables in 1908, and it
soon became a bestseller. Montgomery wrote several sequels
to the novel, as well as other books set in Prince Edward
Island. Montgomery was an advocate for women's rights and
education and was active in the temperance movement, which
sought to end the sale of alcohol. Her writing was influenced
by her Christian faith, as well as her love for the landscape of
Prince Edward Island. Montgomery's works remain popular
today, and her life has been the subject of numerous
biographies and films. She was inducted into the Canadian
Literary Hall of Fame in 1981, and her home in Cavendish,
Prince Edward Island, is now a National Historic Site.
