JOHNSON ST LOFT
The intrigue of the large volume of interior space in these existing
New Orleans Shotgun dwellings directed the concept of converting
the space and flow into a more efficient and modern design.
Challenges to this project included specific restrictions due to its
unusual property boundary as well as budget limitations. However,
this afforded me the full autonomy of the project design and
execution of quality construction.
Seeing the extensive attic space in historic
shotguns as advantageous, two levels were
created optimizing every inch of height to
produce a spacious yet intimate area for
bedrooms.
Utilizing the concrete block wall of the existing addition
as the foundation wall was key to making this project
financially feasible to construct. By-products of the
demolition such as the pine lathe once used to hold up
the previous plaster walls became key design elements
throughout the house, warming the natural pallete of
the bedrooms. Bringing natural light into long linear
structures such as these can be quite the challenge.
Utilizing north-facing skylights and windows as well as
transluscent materials, brightens up the space.
NEW DOC ON THE BLOCK
‘New Doc’ , a play on words referencing the previous owner, named Doc, is a multi-family
project located on a prominent commercial corridor in New Orleans. A restrictive lot and
an existing structure added to the complexity of creating an apartment building on a vibrant
and up and coming block near Tulane University. A new modern warehouse like structure
merges onto an existing building. Balconies in the front take advantage of key views of the
river beyond and the street below while at the same time providing privacy with a custom
aluminum fin screen. The profile of the screen blends effortlessly with the vertical cladding of
the main structure.
16
17
A lobby Entrance is fully glazed with glass block, which illuminates the interior and creates a direct connection with
active pedestrian street. A rain garden is situated between the exterior front balconies and invites tall trees to grow
the full height of the building. And with extensive amount of rainfall in the region each front deck and front roof drains
directly into the garden below, easing pressure off the City’s already stressed stormwater system.

The custom aluminum fin profile
was closely designed
with a manufacturer in nearby
Texas. The fin angles were
positioned to create privacy
from the tall apartment building
across the street while at
the same time opening out to
views down the main street as
well as to the adjacent Mississippi
River. A tall growth
bamboo species are expected
to grow to a height of 40
ft (12m), providing a buffer
between each of the flats.
MARBLE ARCH PLACE
Marble Arch Tower, situated on the intersection of Oxford Street and Edgeware Road,
provides the opportunity to bring a degree of design excellence to the area, by using the
highest quallity of materials while demonstrating the best attributes to sustainable design. The
public realm situated at the heart of the development frames the iconic Marble Arch and
provides a relaxing oasis from the congestion of Oxford Street. The complicated and itricate
stone facade system required a great amount of detailed modeling. Leading the cladding
design team, I helped implement the design from Rhinocerous 3D into Revit. This helped
streamline the massing into BIM, creating a suitable project to be delivered for construction.
A strict material requitement in the West End dictated the exterior materiality to be portland cement stone panels to
coordinate with many of the existing buildings in the area . A carefully crafted and articulated facade design consisted
of over 20 different stone pillasters types over two buildings. This required a careful degree of modeling and coordination
in order to communicate the numerous details and control the quality of the design through construction.
SARATOGA RESIDENCE
Located in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans, the Saratoga Residence
reflects the tropical traditions of the city with a modern twist. A passive cooling
system and inviting sliding glass doors create an environment more suited with
coping through the harsh summers rather than fighting against them. Lofted spaces,
large windows, and bold colors are featured throughout the design. With narrow
lot widths, a configuration to allow 2 vehicle parking spaces with controlled access
added to the complexity and shape of the structure.
Secure parking for two and keeping a strong street presence were difficult design challenges when
squeezing a single family residence onto a narrow lot. Two street facing decks mesh effortlessly with the
neioghboring front porches, while the glass block of the steam rooom acts as a street lantern at night.
ONZAGA CREOLE
A rather particular building typology, known as the side galley
shotgun, provided the basis of the project. An exterior side
porch acted as the circulation for the residence in the times
before air conditioning was the norm. As an efficient use of
space to traverse the home, the basis of this design stripped the
structure down to its original historic nature and then added a
contemporary addition based off another historical reference
the Creole Cottage.
A WORKOUT CABANA
A dedicated bodybuilder and her husband wanted to create an oasis for fitness
and leisure as part of an extension to their mid-centrury modern home in
the suburbs of New Orleans. The project’s goal was to maximize the use of the
backyard space by providing a large gym, an outdoor lounge, and an exterior
kitchen. Bold colors are used in coordination with resilient ipe wood to express
functionality as well as the playful and energetic character of the clients.
TERRASINI VILLA
A villa located on the northern coast of Sicily has the potential
to catch increbile views over the Mediteranean
Sea from only certain locations and altitudes along the
property. With sunset views out to the famous Lo Zinagro
Reserve beyond, taking advatage of the elevated room
of the primary suite, the view became the driving force of
the design.
44
45
Creating an angle for the upper
floor balcony not only directed the
views but simultaneuosly reinforced
the corner of the orginal residence.
As part of the scope included a complete redesign of the upper floor primary suite. The flow of the bedroom
was alternated by adding a bespoke platform bed with integrated storage, framed with a continuous
headboard and floating bookshelf. It is highlighted with an accordion style window with the sill installed
level with the bed. An immediate interaction with the environment invites the owners to enjoy sunset
views by simply rolling on one’s side, helping to blur the barrier between the interior and exquisite exterior.
A floor slab of white concrete and slender
steel columns seems to levirtate above the
ground. Taking cues from local shade structures,
the bamboo offers protection from the
scorching Sicilian sun while simultaneously
appearing airy and open, effortlessly blending
into the existing white stucco facade of
the original villa. The added element of the
playful shadow lines of the shade structure
add to the overall ambience of “la dolce far
ADDITIONAL WORKS
From new construction homes responding to the rising sea levels caused
by climate change, to bespoke one of a kind renovations, to photography
and custom built furniture, my work spans across many mediums and
scales.
52
BURGUNDY RENOVATION
The Burgundy Renovation, was a carefuly crafted interior renovation of a single side of a New Orleans shotgun
home. Rearranging the circulation by bringing the most public spaces towards the front and restructuring a side
entrance provided the owners with more privacy while simultaneously creating useful space for social occasions.
Bespoke millwork and furniture were designed and built for this space using mostly reclaimed materials from the
demolition as well as other demolition sites in the area. This included wood lathe for headboards, reclaimed cypress
barge boards for tables and doors, and old growth pine for shelving and storage.
CREOLATE
Creolate is a two-family new build project located in New Orleans. Adapting the Creole Cottage, a common
typology of the city provided the base and context for the design. Relating the form integrates a more modern
design concept into the historic fabric of the neighborhood. The simple developmental steps of the model were
in direct relation to the site, the scope requirements, the natural ventilation techniques, as well as the added requirements
of flood protection. Creolate brings together historical adaptation with modern standards in order to
create a new concept of affordable residential design to the area.
