President
Dear WCRT members,
For the past few issues, we have been
concerned about the printing and mailing of
the PostScript. With the help of the WCT
and retiree volunteers, you are reading our
first in-house product. Every member of the
WCRT received it in the mail. In the future,
members getting the Commentator by e-mail
will also get the PostScript by e-mail. Please
continue to send us news of your events
and activities. This is our newsletter and we
are all busy people.
At the spring luncheon, we held elections
of officers of the WCRT. Ed Murphy
was elected to the position of rep to the WCT
RA. He will not be able to fill this position;
therefore we have a vacancy. This is an important
position because we need to be
aware of the concerns of our active mem-
NASTY POLITICS 2009:
NOT A NEW PHENOMENON
CLIFF
FOLEY
Political Action
Chairperson
Have you ever had the feeling that both
political parties are more interested in furthering
themselves than accomplishing
things that benefit the people? Mud slinging
is NOT a new phenomenon created in
recent times. If we go back to our own beginnings
as a country, we find some pretty
negative tactics.
We can begin with the only time in
American history that a President ran against
his Vice-President. The election of 1800 pitted
John Adams against his longtime friend
Thomas Jefferson. In 1776 they had been
instrumental in establishing the United
States as a new nation. Yet, Jefferson’s campaign
accused Adams of having a “hideous
hermaphroditical character, which has neither
the force nor firmness of a man, or the
gentleness and sensibility of a woman.”
Adams’ side said Jefferson was “a meanspirited,
low-lived fellow, the son of a halfbreed
Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto
father.” A dozen years later the two
men renewed their friendship and wrote to
each other until their deaths on the same
day in 1826. It was July 4, exactly fifty years
after the Declaration of Independence.
Another really nasty political campaign
matched John Quincy Adams and Andrew
Jackson in 1828. You may want to check this
one out for yourself. Words like “slut, pimp
and prostitute” flew freely at the time. One
recent writer described editorials of that campaign
as being more like bathroom graffiti.
The New York State Senate’s summer
antics of locking people out of the chamber
and accomplishing nothing was ironically
followed in September with the Senate returning
to address ethics reform. At the time
of this article that had stalled since Republicans
are claiming that a panel to investigate
campaign finance and other violations is
weighted in favor of the Democrats. The
Democrats have also not been completely
upright after gaining control of the Senate.
They could have attempted some form of
cooperation with the Republicans but instead
they chose vindictiveness.
I will inject one positive note here. On
July 1, 2009, the Governor signed the extension
of the Health Insurance
Moratorium, which protects our health insurance
for another year. Fortunately this
had been passed by both houses before the
Senate shut down.
Moving on to the national, scene we
see more partisanship. The Democrats, who
now control the House and Senate as well
as the Presidency, are under attack by the
Republicans. The GOP is looking to the next
Congressional election and even the 2012
vote when the top job comes up again. Their
strategy appears to be to impede progress
on such important issues as health care insurance
reform, confident that they can convince
the American public to change allegiance
the next time they go to the polls.
I wonder if the next elections will be a
striking similarity to those in the early 19th
century. Today we must be prepared to sort
out the partisan rhetoric from the truth...
“AND MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.”
Fundraiser still
accepting donations
Ten Days in August was an ambitious
project undertaken by a generous group of volunteers
to aid The Biersack Children’s Project.
Bill Biersack was a Village of Fishkill judge
who died suddenly and unexpectedly six years
ago, leaving his wife, Patty, with two growing
boys attending Fishkill School to care for and a
large house to maintain on 43 Broad Street in
Fishkill.
Subsequently, Patty got very sick and she
recently passed away.
The Children’s Project was created to try
and renovate the Biersack home so the mortgage
can be paid off and the house sold, with any
remaining funds put in a trust for the two boys,
now 12 and 15 years old. This is all they have.
Welcome new retirees! You have joined
a group of dedicated professionals.
Retirees will receive membership renewal
notices in the fall. New retirees have
Complimentary membership for 2009-2010
but may choose Lifetime if they so desire. If
you are already a Lifetime member, you
should not receive a notice.
Yearly members, please consider Lifetime
membership. It makes it easier for you
as well as for me. Some of you were loyal
members, and for some reason, you did not
renew this year. Please do so in the fall. Now,
perhaps more than ever, our solidarity is vital
to our survival, as well as the survival of
our health benefits.
Songs and dances included: Somewhere
Over the Rainbow; Side by Side;
Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?; Look For
the Silver Lining; Harrigan, That’s Me!; By
the Light of the Silvery Moon; and After
You’ve Gone.
The best line of the show was, “If we
have a boy, he’ll be named John. If we have
another girl, we’ll call it quits.”
The highlight of the day came during
the delivering-the-baby scene when the cast
shouted, “Is there a doctor in the house?!”
Wouldn’t you know it, our own Eileen Zipes
was chosen to play the doctor—complete
with a provided lab coat and her own fannypack
doctor kit? Many hysterically funny
ad-libbed lines followed. She was a good
sport to finish the scene.
Original PostScript creator offers feelings
How ashamed I feel for not having written,
expressing my appreciation for the job you are
doing with the PostScript. I know, only too well,
the depressing feeling one gets at not having the
work acknowledged.
Alice Heusinger and I were the creators of
the PostScript (having published a newspaper
together for years in Oak Grove School). My
husband, now afflicted with Parkinson’s, actually
coined the title “PostScript,” and designed
the school bell, which decorates the masthead. I
“hung” in there with PostScript for, really, just a
short time, when I couldn’t cope with the work
involved in getting out the paper, and quit leaving
Alice alone to do the work.
Now we are living in the “wilds” of Connecticut,
and the PostScript is my means of keeping
up with what is going on with you all.
Congratulations on all the awards you have
collected for a job well done. They are well deserved.
I look forward to each issue, and hope
you will continue contributing your talents to its
success. Marcia Chang Oak Grove 1990
English teacher still in classroom
In the interest of viability, power, and unity
(“...Can you hear me now?...”), a few updates
about this wayward retiree: I can best be described
as a senior-citizen-stay-at-home dad as Karen and
I are parents to nearly three-year-old Ethan James
and Easter-born six week-old Dylan Thomas.
We live just over the mountain from the
Woodstock vortex. I spent a few years doing
adjunct work at SUNY New Paltz and Marist, as
well as longterm-subbing for Karen in
Germantown, while she was home during Ethan’s
early months—11th and 12th grade English and
journalism.
Lately, Ulster BOCES summer school ELA
Intensive classes have been the extent of my
“fingers in the pie.” You can take the teacher out
of the classroom, but...ah, well. Needless to say,
the two lads at home keep us hopping joyously!!!
Still juggling, gardening, reading, writing, humming
and strumming, though! This IS a truly special
time.
I would be remiss if I didn’t give equal time
to my wonderful fully grown kids:
Jennifer, living in England, has made me a
grandfather three times over, including twin girls
born a few weeks after Dylan
Jeremiah, living in Tannersville, NY,works at
Hunter Mountain, a professional snowboarder,
riding for Team Burton and running ski and board
operations at Hunter.
Jonathan, after meandering through a rich
college experience, including time at the Berklee
College of Music, a May Literature graduate with
honors from SUNY New Paltz. At the end of June,
Jonathan started basic training at Fort Knox, KY.
Ketcham graduates all!!!
Thanks for the opportunity to come out of
seclusion. Keep up the inspired work on the publication.
Some WCRT Stuffers (volunteers who help mail the Commentator) recently took Linda
Leito, WCT Administrative Assistant, to Tiramasu Restaurant, Route 82, Hopewell Junction,
for lunch to thank her for her help. Linda has retired after 25 years from her
positions at the WCT office. Seated, from left, are Barbara Stuck, Carol Wall, Peg Nikola,
Alice Heusinger, Cathy Foley and Linda.
Retirement ain’t (rocket) science
We actually live on a golf course next to a
pond, providing us with LOUD frog mating
calls every spring (makes me smile as we relax
in our hot tub in the evening).
I just returned from WEEKS in Kentucky,
babysitting for my daughter’s new boy. What
a joy! I know you understand this as YOU
babysit too and get that warm fuzzy feeling
holding a grandchild. What a blessing!
I’d love to still be a referee for field hockey,
but the high schools here do NOT have the
sport and I”m not traveling 45 minutes to ref a
college game. I was tempted to take a Biology
position at our local community college early
in my retirement, but fortunately, I resisted
that urge and am busy with Turtle Watch walks
at dawn on Thursdays, a women’s Bible study,
a couples’ Bible study, Needlers (we make
items for Premie babies), Garden Club, weeding
my gardens, and lots of babysitting (not
only the grandkids, but my mom lives with us
most of the year too).
Sometimes I help Rich with Meals on
Wheels and his work with providing seniors
with food.
We are busy and grateful to be able to
enjoy retirement. We love the climate in NC
and do not miss the snow. I am intimidated
writing to an English teacher, knowing my
punctuation and grammar leave much to be
desired, but did enjoy hearing from you.
Peace and love to you and yours. Enjoy
the privilege of spending time with those
grandchildren.
Retiree’s hubby joins her in retirement
We do indeed hear you and enjoy reading
the Postscript.
I looked forward to Phil’s retirement this year.
We met at BOCES in ’75 and both worked at
Wappingers Jr. High. The staff through all these
years have been compassionate, professional,
and have a wonderful sense of humor. Some of
the staff at WJH became our closest friends and
have seen us get married, raise our daughters,
and been there for us during happy and hard
times. Our daughters went into the teaching field
after seeing how much Phil and I enjoyed working
with students and our fellow teachers.
I owe a lot to Wappingers schools. My father,
Tom Taft, was school board president in the
early ’70s. I remember “new” schools being built,
him going to meetings, and discussions of
Wappingers education at the dinner table.
I went to Gayhead, VanWyck, and graduated from
John Jay in ’72.
After I met Phil I got my teaching degree
and we both worked in Wappingers, Phil at the
jr.high level and I taught elementary. It was strange
in the beginning working with teacher’s who
taught me!
During an illness in ’95, again the staff could
not have been more supportive. I worked with
Charlie Powers [2001] at Fishkill Elementary. He
was a major factor in helping me make a transition
from a healthy teacher to one that could no longer
teach. I will always be grateful that he picked up
the slack for me and kept me involved in classroom
activities.
Now, Phil and I are both retired, but there
will always be a part of our lives that has such
good memories, and good friends that would not
be possible if it were not for Wappingers schools.
This issue’s out-takes:
a bonus for e-mail
subscribers
Dear readers,
I just got an idea, and I wanted to
try something new. I thought I’d run it
by e-mail subscribers because they can
handle whatever I send them.
I’d like some feedback on your
thoughts about this concept. Printed
hardcopies limit me to eight pages. I can
be more flexible electronically. You get
the benefit. Let me know that benefit is
for you.
Enjoy the leftovers.
