CONCEPT BOARD
YIN-YANG
In a town or neighborhood, living and lifestyle should always
be of the up-most consideration. A fulfilling and fruitful life are
what most residences want to look for.
A yin-yang concept is made to adjust and align the current
lives for dualism. Creating complementary forms and spaces.
Users outside of the contemporary backyard can utilize it to
form memories, which is the biggest element when it comes to
creating the sense of belonging.
As the day progress from bright mornings to busy afternoons
and after hours. The yin-yang plate evolves for different users at
different timings for all types of programmes.
Lets refer to learning as work, all of us need work, to create
vaule back to the society.
CARRIERS OF MEMORIES
The architecture in tiong bahru stay as some of the most
beautiful parts of Singapore. With much of that embraced by a
wonderful community.
They need more spaces where they can be expressive and
hangout. A backyard was a perfect cut in for users to make
CO-EXISTING HUMANS
Collaborations and collisions of perspectives is the basis to
new ideas and improvements. We need those ideas
Visitors like Georgia Caney wishes she can live in this
wonderful neighborhood. A desire to feel inclusive within the
culture, besides just here to enjoy coffee.
HAPPINESS
We need money to survive and provide a comfortable home
for our families. When competition gets tough, we leave less
time for those that truly matter, time spent becomes mandatory
and Perfunctory.
A intervention that can provide that fast paced satisfaction can
solve these urban problems.
CONCEPT
03
ART-DECO
WHERE AND WHY OUR AESTHETIC MATTER
Similar to other design styles, these
aesthetics influence our mood, attitude
and sense.
Art Deco, sometimes referred to as Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that
first appeared in France just before World War I. Art Deco influenced the design of buildings,
furniture, jewelry, fashion, cars, movie theaters, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as
radios and vacuum cleaners.
For tiong bahru, residences lived in this
European style.
Furnitures and interiors are evidences
of those pasts, how can some of them
stand the test of time?
Between 1936 and 1941, architect Alfred G. Church was entrusted with the design of Tiong Bahru.
His designs were a modified form of a style called Streamline Modern, a late development of the
Art Deco movement. The buildings were mainly inspired by technology and the speed of modern
travel – with buildings designed to look like automobiles, trains, ocean liners and aeroplanes

BACKYARD
Lapa, referring to the un-roofed center of the
intervention. A escape within the enclosure.
The lapa is designed with the intentions of giving
residences a space where they can be themselves.
Hopefully free of most of society’s. With many
parts of spatial designed for their purpose in a
need for a backyard space specifically dedicated
to pastime activities.
This fuels more in depth interactions that are
truly meaningful and can lessen or combat tiong
bahru’s soul-less site.
Used for all ages and types of visitors, couples,
elderlies.
Which ultimately
creates a “lapa” that
catalyzes interesting

Discover
The planning and schematic analysis of a site was to dig
out its “culture”. The hidden habits of its nature, using that
to inform my design.
Because war memorial is so centered around triggering
feelings for users of the space. Watching the site evolve
everyday was the most infromative.
“How do we appreciate and develop from
history”
Its important to look back down the road, not just to reminiscence
or remorse. Rather to develop and discover
trends that has led us to where society/humanity are right
now. Developing upon those theories and mistakes pushes
further.
PROCESS 07
The slice model
Moving onto the model in phase 2 inspired more ideas to
manifest from buildings and existing architecture. This process
did more for determining our design direction, the model
was essential because it framed the entire city in a new
perspective.
HRZ
An enriching experience
Built on the blood and bone of our past. A
commemorative space should trigger feelings and
resonate within our generations to come. As our
society progress, historical moments like the Japanese
occupation might seem useless and unnecessary.
Morals, values , the unwavering spirits of our races in
unity can be easily lost and forgotten.
The intervention takes on that job and expands on the
feeling of a grand scale in honor and painful history
context.

VIP was a entirely new step to tackling the downfall of

Suspension, in chemical terms meant a mixture
between two elements without dissolving.
I believe that certain things and art transcends the
social ladder, the difference in culture, the difference in
skin color. VIP is where we can come together and all
appreciate fashion.
It takes in all opinions and makes for interesting
exchanges that feed the designer new ideas and
breakthrough for their fashion works.

Furthermore, landscape was entirely new to me and my one other partner to

Most importantly, having a great learning attitude.

Plugins
Plugins, a rather simple part of sketchup and renderings. On the contrary, it has a lot of depth to its possibility
and range of functions.
My perspective on this topic and learning drive was a curiosity towards the possibility of form.
Instead of lines, planes and linear dots, these plugins gives me the ability to create organic shapes that was
previously possible or hard to achieve.
1.
Experience and try out the plugins myself, observe and react to what each of the plugins can do.
2.

The east entrance was my biggest contribution towards the wuxi project. It made me realize the industry standard, i learned a lot of practical scales
and working methods. Including cad, workflow, sketchup and etc.
Plus i was fluent in both Chinese and English, i took on most of the translating for the project and communicated with the clients about our design
plan. Which was very new and essential to the entire project, i would eventually manage to finalize the east entrance design from its site plan to
renders.

Goodbyes
After being an intern for 3months, i really felt
like my understanding of design as a whole
elevated significantly.
To the maturity of my thinking, practicality in
doing functional design. Most of all, working as
a team, which i had a lot of fun doing.

Identifying with the mall
Gaps required us to go multiple rounds down to the site to “feel out the mall”, taking multiple photos to look and observe the little details and user
behaviors within the space. Each time i went down to the site at different timings, i would learn something new. No matter how insignificant it
would be, all of it would assemble to inform and reinforce my concept and design intent.
Overall, this project heavily influenced me to become passionate and develop a keen eye for designing. Whether it’s the limitations of clawing
onto the architecture’s pre-existing “gaps” or doing design within a rather underused space. It was all food for thought and good design principles
established.

The trouble of having a specific and rather niche brand limits its development into something greater. Hyperloop was capped by its
difficulty to relate with many of the normal daily users, having very little exposure to help them grow.
Furthermore, they would need as much help or investment they could get. In those aspects, a carrier or extension in experience would
be greatly useful for them.

FEELING FOR A TOWN
Tiong
bahru is one of Singapore’s most unique and beautiful towns. The site is special in every way, a
glimpse into what a kampong+art deco style looks like. Clean bash of modernism with an aged community.
Creating one of the most interesting town and residential neighborhoods.
Getting into contact witth the
site. Observing the habits and
soul of the town. Learning about
its architecture first, followed
by some first impressions of the
activites that takes place there.
Gathers enough evidences
for small analysis to fuel
implmentations for the most
frequent users of this site.
Problems and issues that
immediately arose was that the
town was changing flavors.
Residences and their homes
were put up for “show”
To be exaggerative, It became
less of a home, but rather than
another shell or facade that
our country has to impress
foreigners.
Experiential design is also a
major part of my intervention.
To excite and stimulate our
senses that users can remember
and talk about.
The first ideas and concepts
starts to take shape here.
I felt unjust for the residences,
that they should have more
ability to express themselves in
a shared space.
I went forward with a goal to
create a perfect solution for
both parties.
I discovered some elements from reasearching about my site,
that identity and characteristics of TB can be stripped down to
the real day to day experience and interactions within the place.
“The style and architecture or
streets are just a carrier or shell
for that to take place”
The case studies on the
residences taught me the exact
problems they faced.
I could also sympathize with
them on a more personal level.
Thinking in their shoes and their
perspective on the whole of
tiongbahru being a attraction.
They are thankful for it, but
is torn with the benefits and
experience of staying in Tiong
