FC BATE Borisov - Real Madrid CF
MATCH PRESS KIT
• There was some good news for BATE, as captain Aleksandr Ermakovich came on after the interval for his first
competitive appearance since September when he aggravated a knee injury.
• "I probably should have made more changes to the starting XI," said Goncharenko. "The players looked tired and
it was hard to watch at times. However, we do not have adequate replacements for all positions. Of course, it is a pity
to lose our unbeaten run. Dinamo are our main rivals in Belarus but we still lacked motivation."
• BATE picked themselves up three days later as Mikhail Sivakov's 36th-minute penalty earned an experimental side
three Vysshaya Liga points at FC Savit Mogilev. With Nekhaychik the sole survivor from the starting XI that lost to
Zenit, Valentin Radevich hit the post after only 28 seconds before Sivakov struck following a foul on Vitali Kazantsev.
• The Vysshaya Liga drew to a close on 16 November with BATE signing off with a 1-1 draw at home to FC Vitebsk.
Rodionov's header (67) was cancelled out by Ruslan Usov deep into added time.
• "We have had a fine season," said Goncharenko. "I have nothing to complain about. We won all the key fixtures
when we had to win. I am worried about the number of late goals we are conceding though – in added time today,
and before that in the game against Zenit."
• Rodionov and Bliznyuk topped the Vysshaya Liga scoring chart with 16 goals apiece. Bliznyuk fell two short of his
2007 haul while Rodionov surpassed his by a solitary strike.
• Maksim Zhavnerchik has not appeared for the Belarussian titleholders since their first-night defeat by Real Madrid
CF and was removed from the squad prior to the draw with Juventus on 30 September. "I consider him one of BATE's
most promising players," said Goncharenko. "Unfortunately, he doesn't have the desire to develop his game. If
someone does not work properly, and does that over a long period of time, I have to make radical decisions."
Injury news
• Vladimir Rzhevski – out since 5 November (ankle)
• Aleksandr Ermakovich – out 9 August to 9 November (knee)
• Rzhevski will not play again until 2009 after breaking his ankle against Zenit.
International news
• Belarus coach Bernd Stange decided to omit all BATE players from his squad ahead of the 2-1 friendly defeat in
Cyprus on 19 November to give the champions more time to prepare for their fixtures against Madrid and Juventus.
Miscellaneous
• BATE have turned down the chance to take part in the Commonwealth Cup, an indoor friendly tournament staged
in Moscow every January between the leading clubs of the former Soviet republics. Dinamo Minsk also declined so
third-placed FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk will represent Belarus.
• Igor Stasevich and Khagush recently participated in a charity project called Hurry To Make Good, visiting a mother
of nine adopted children to present her with a television, a newspaper subscription and BATE souvenirs all paid for
out of their own pockets.
• Although Goncharenko's date of birth is widely quoted as 10 September 1977, he was born on 10 June 1977. The
confusion arose after he lost his passport and, in the replacement, the official mistakenly entered 09 (September) as
the month of his birth instead of 06 (June).
• BATE play their home group games at the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, 65km away from Borisov, as their usual home
ground has a capacity of only 5,000.
Real Madrid
UEFA milestones
• Mahamadou Diarra's next appearance in the UEFA Champions League will be his 50th.
UEFA Champions League statistics
• Madrid have had 39 shots wide so far, the joint highest total in the competition along with Manchester United FC.
Disciplinary information
• The injured Ruud van Nistelrooy will incur a suspension with his next yellow card.
