Bostan Hikayeleri – Proje Direktörü
Sosyal, kültürel ve sanatsal alanlarda,
mimarlık, kent çalışmaları, iletişim, dijital
medya gibi farklı disiplinlerde üretimde
bulunan ve yolları Kuzguncuk’ta kesişen
kişilerden oluşan 66 Kolektif üyeleri olarak
Kuzguncuk Bostanı ve diğer bostanlarla
ilgili süreçlere hep yakın durduk. “Şehirde
doğa ile yeniden bağ kurmak, kentsel
müştereklerimizden olan mevcut
bostanları, kent bahçelerini birlikte
korumak, iyileştirmek ve yenilerini kurmak,
kentsel tarımı yaygınlaştırmak için biz ne
yapabiliriz?” sorusundan yola çıkarak 2016
yılında “Bostan Hikayeleri” adını verdiğimiz
bir çalışma başlattık.
4
Hem müşterekler genelinde, hem de kent
bahçeciliği ve kentsel tarım özelinde emek
harcayan birçok kişi ve topluluk bulunuyor.
Onların ortaya koydukları iyi örnekleri ve
pratikleri görünür kılarak farkındalık
yaratmak, çoğaltarak yaygınlaştırmak, hatta
aralarında yeni bağlar ve dayanışmalar
kurarak hepsinin ihtiyaçlarına yönelik ortak
çözümler bulmak için kullanabileceğimiz
en etkili yöntemlerden biri bilgi ve deneyim
paylaşımı. Bizler de bu sürece, önce
İstanbul’daki, daha sonra Türkiye’nin farklı
kentlerindeki bostanlarla ilgili hikayeleri
toplayarak, arşivleyerek, yenilerini üreterek,
paylaşarak ve tartışarak, hatta dünyadaki
farklı kentlerle ilişkilendirerek katkı vermeyi
hedefledik. Bunun için bir seri faaliyet
düzenleyerek, dijital medya alanında farklı
ürünler ortaya koymaya başladık.
2016 yılında bostanhikayeleri.com web
sitesini kurarak mevcut bostan hikayelerini
içeren online bir arşiv yarattık. Başlangıç
olarak metin, video, fotoğraf ve ses olmak
üzere farklı formatlarda üç yüze yakın dijital
hikaye topladık. Bunları format ve biçime
ek olarak “Gençlik ve Eğitim”, “Kentsel
Haklar ve Katılım”, “Kentsel Tasarım ve
Planlama”, “Kültürel Miras ve Bellek”,
“Sosyal Topluluklar ve Ağlar”,
“Sürdürülebilir Yaşam ve Permakültür”
başlıkları altında konularına göre
kategorilere ayırdık. “Deneyim Aktarımı”,
“Projeler, Kampanyalar ve Etkinlikler” ve
“Uluslararası Bağlantılar” gibi ek başlıklar
altında da seçkiler oluşturduk.
Sitede birer “post” mantığında paylaşılan
hikayelerin her birini ayrıca etiketlendirdik;
ziyaretçilerin kendi hikaye örgülerini
yaratabilmeleri için, okudukları her post ile
“İlgili Hikayeler”i konumlandırdık. Arşivdeki
hikayeleri, sitenin sağ üst köşesinde yer
alan kategori ve etiketler aracılığıyla farklı
şekillerde erişime açmış olduk. Böylelikle
farklı toplulukların deneyimlerini,
Kasım 2017 • Sayı 1 | November 2017 • Issue 1
ihtiyaçlarını, sorunlarını ve çözüm önerilerini
bu sitede görünür hale getirmeye başladık.
Bir sonraki adımımız, herkesin birer “yazar”
olarak kendi hikayesini paylaşmasını
sağlayacak teknik altyapıyı tamamlayarak
siteyi katılımcı bir platforma dönüştürmek
olacak.
2017 yılı başında tek tek İstanbul’daki
bostanları ziyaret etmeye başladık. İlk
ziyaretler için, bir araya geliş amaçları ve
pratikleri birbirinden farklı dört bostan
topluluğu seçtik: Kuzguncuk “Mahalle”
Bostanı, Roma “Topluluk” Bostanı, Yedikule
“Üretici” Bostanları ve Tarlataban
“Üniversite” Bostanı. Her birinin
temsilcileriyle yaptığımız görüşmeleri, bu
bostanların kuruluşuna, işleyişine,
ürünlerine, ihtiyaçlarına ve emellerine dair
anlattıklarını derleyerek, birer röportaj
videosu ile belgelemeye karar verdik.
Böylece, videolar başta olmak üzere arşivi
besleyecek yeni hikayelerin üretimine
girişmiş olduk.
Yeni ürettiğimiz ve üreteceğimiz videoları
da kullanarak, her sayısında İstanbul ve
Türkiye’nin diğer şehirlerindeki, hatta
dünya genelindeki farklı bostanları ve diğer
“ilgili hikayeleri” konu alan, onların işleyiş ve
ihtiyaçlarına dikkat çeken periyodik bir
yayın olarak kurguladığımız bu derginin ilk
sayısını oluşturduk. Her sayıda ele
alacağımız bostanların hikayelerini
birbirleriyle ilişkilendirmek amacıyla aynı
zamanda haritalandırmaya da başladık:
bostanhikayeleri.com/baglantilar.
2017 Kasım ayında yayınlanan bu dergiyi,
belkemiğini oluşturan videoları ve arşivdeki
diğer hikayeleri ilk kez Bostan Hikayeleri
Kent Karşılaşması’nda anlatarak, kent
bostanlarını korumak, iyileştirmek ve
yenilerini kurmak, kentsel tarımı
yaygınlaştırmak için emek harcayan farklı
toplulukların yararlanabilmesi, bilgi ve
deneyim paylaşımına, ortak çözüm
üretimine katkıda bulunabilmesi için birlikte
şekillendirmeyi umuyoruz. Yolu bostandan,
hikayesinde bostan geçen herkesi ortak bir
anlatıda buluşmaya davet ediyoruz.
We also made tags for each story that is
shared in the site as a “post” and we
positioned “Related Stories” next to each
post for the visitors to start creating their
own storylines. By the use of tags and the
selection of categories from the list at the
upper right hand corner of the web site, we
sought to make the stories accessible to
the visitors in different ways. Thereby,
through the web site, we started to make
the experiences, needs, urgencies and
solution proposals of different communities
visible. Our next step will be to turn the site
into a participatory platform by completing
the infrastructure to allow all visitors to
become “authors” and to share their own
stories.
In 2017, we started to visit the urban
gardens in Istanbul. For our first visits, we
picked four garden communities that differ
from one another in terms of their
purposes and practices: Kuzguncuk
“Neighborhood” Garden, Roma “Solidarity”
Garden, Yedikule “Producers” Garden,
and Tarlataban “University” Garden. We
then decided to document the meetings
we held with the representatives of each
garden and to edit the stories they shared
about the foundation, operation, products,
needs and objects of these gardens into
four interview videos. This way, we
embarked on the creation of new stories to
feed the archive, notably in the form of
videos.

Garden Stories – Project Director
As members of the 66 Collective, we
produce work in social, cultural and artistic
areas, under various disciplines such as
architecture, city studies, communications
and digital media. Our paths have crossed
in Kuzguncuk and we have been closely
involved in the processes related to the
Kuzguncuk Garden as well as others.
Collectively we have started the “Garden
Stories” project in 2016 following this
question we asked ourselves: “What can
we do to re-connect with nature in the city,
to help co-protect and revitalize the
existing gardens, to build new ones as our
commons, and to make urban agriculture
widespread?”
There are various individuals and
communities that work hard to care for the
commons, and more specifically, to foster
urban gardening and agriculture. We
believe that knowledge and experience
sharing is one of the best methods to
highlight, scale up and disseminate their
efforts and good practices, and to find
common solutions for their urgencies by
building new connections and
cooperations amongst them. We aimed to
contribute to this process by collecting,
creating, archiving, sharing and discussing
stories about the urban gardens firstly in
Istanbul, then in other cities of Turkey,
making further links with cities across the
world. We started to organize a series of
activities and to produce various digital
media works to this end.
In 2016, we built the bostanhikayeleri.com
web site and therefore created an online
archive for the existing garden stories. To
start with, we collected close to three
hundred digital stories in the form of text,
video, photo and audio. In addition to
format and style, we categorized them
thematically under the titles of “Youth and
Education”, “Urban Rights and
Participation”, “Urban Design and
Planning”, “Cultural Heritage and
Memory”, “Social Communities and
Networks”, “Sustainable Life and
Permaculture”. We also created collections
such as “Experience Sharing”, “Projects,
Campaigns and Event”, and “International
Connections”.
This is how we came to create the first
edition of this magazine, which we
envisaged as a periodical publication that
features different gardens in Istanbul and
other cities of Turkey and the world, as well
as other “related stories”, pointing out their
various practices and urgencies by the
use of the videos we have created and are
yet to create. As part of this effort, we also
started to map the gardens to be featured
in each edition in order to further link their
stories with each other:
bostanhikayeleri.com/baglantilar.
By presenting this magazine to be
published in November 2017, the videos
that constitute its backbone and the other
stories in the archive for the first time
during the Garden Stories Urban
Encounter, we hope to further shape them
collectively in order to serve better the
purposes of the communities that work
towards fostering urban gardening and
agriculture. This is how we would like to
start contributing to the processes of
knowledge and experience sharing, and
generation of common solutions. And we
invite everyone, whose paths or stories
cross at the urban gardens, to come
together in this common narrative.

Bostan Hikayeleri – Editör
“Bostan” kelimesi Vikipedi’de kökeni
Farsça’dan gelen “sebze tarlası” ya da
“kavun karpuz tarlası”na verilen ad olarak
geçmekte. Bulunduğu coğrafyaya göre
kurak ya da sulak alanlarda kurulabilen
bostan ayrıca bazı yörelerde halk arasında
“karpuz” anlamına da geliyor. Şehirde ise
bostan demek üretken ve sürdürülebilir
peyzaj, yerel üretim, tüketicinin gıdaya
kolay ulaşması, atalık tohum, türetici
topluluklarının kurulması, kadim tarım
bilgisi, kentli insanın elinin toprağa
değmesi, özlediğimiz kokuların, tatların
şehre geri dönmesi anlamını taşıyor bu
günlerde.
Bizler de Bostan Hikayeleri ekibi olarak
derginin bu ilk sayısında İstanbul’da adını
sıkça duyduğumuz dört bostanın
birbirlerinden farklı ama en nihayetinde
birçok ortaklıklar içeren hikayelerini sizlerle
paylaşmak için yola çıktık. Bu süreçte her
gün önünden geçtiğimiz ama fark
etmediğimiz yeni bostanlarla karşılaştık,
her öğünde masamızda gördüğümüz ama
nereden geldiğini hiç düşünmediğimiz
ürün çeşitliliğine şaşırdık. Bostancılarla,
şehrin geleceğini hayal eden topluluklarla,
sağlıklı, ekonomik, adil üretilen gıdaya
ulaşmaya çalışan üniversite öğrencileriyle,
mahalle kültürünü devam ettirmeyi dert
edinmiş ve bir araya gelmek için
mahallesindeki bostana sahip çıkmış,
dernek kurmuş komşularla tanıştık.
Her bir ziyaretimizde bu bostanların
hikayelerine yenileri eklendi, araştırdıkça
hikayeler derinleşti. “Ne zaman ve neden
kurulmuşlar? Hangi ihtiyaçlardan
doğmuşlar? Günümüze gelene kadar neler
yaşanmış bu bostanlarda? Gelecek
hayalleri ne? Bostancısıyla, tüketicisiyle,
gönüllüsüyle bu bostan insanları kimler?”
sorularının cevaplarını ve daha nicelerini
bulduk bu hikayelerde.
YEDİKULE BOSTANLARI
Değişen bostancılarıyla birlikte yüzyıllardır
yaşamaya devam eden, kentin göbeğinde
şehri besleyen, yıllardır uygulanan kadim
üretim teknikleriyle ekilen dikilen, değişen
şartlara uyum sağlamayı başarmış
Yedikule Bostanları, yanındaki İstanbul
Kara Surları’yla birlikte kültürel mirasımızın
bir parçasıyken aynı zamanda bostancının
ekmek kapısı olmuş. İstanbul’un
pazarlarında, marketlerinde gördüğümüz
yeşilliklerin kaynağı olan ticari amaçlı tarım
yapılan bostanlardan biri olan Yedikule
Bostanları’nda üretici-tüketici ilişkisinin
direkt olarak kurulduğu, üretim ve lojistik
sürecinde karbon ayak izinin azaldığı,
sulama için kullanılan kuyu sularının da
yetişen ürünlerin de sağlıklı olduğu
raporlanmış.
“Bizimkisi zor ama güzel meslek,” deyip yaz
kış fark etmeksizin sabahın köründe bostanda
çalışmaya başlayan kadınların, erkeklerin,
ailelerin hikayesini içeriyor bu bostanlar.
Bostancılar belediyeye ödedikleri kiraya
karşın resmi belgelerde işgalci
görünüyorlar. Ürünlerin verimli ve sağlıklı
büyümesi için gerekli hayvan gübresini
büyükşehir yasaları gereği bostana
sokmaları yasak. Çiftçi belgeleri olmadığı
için bostanlarına tarım sigortası
yaptıramıyor, parasal desteklerden
yararlanamıyorlar.
Bu hikayeye son dönemde bir başlık daha
eklendi: İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi,
Yedikule Bostanları’nı, “Kentsel Tarım Parkı”
konsepti ile yeniden hayata geçirecek bir
proje hazırladıklarını duyurdu. “Bostan
kültürünün kent içerisinde tematik olarak
korunmasının ve bahçecilik tarihimizin
gelecek nesillere aktarılmasının”
amaçlandığı söylenen projede halen
cevaplanmamış sorular özellikle Yedikule
Bostanları Koruma Girişimi olarak bir araya
gelen kişileri ve STK’ları düşündürüyor. Bu
alanın nasıl işletileceği, bostan alanlarında
hangi tarım yöntemlerinin ve organik pazar
kurallarının kullanılacağı ise cevaplanmayı
bekleyen sorulardan birkaçı.
ROMA BOSTANI
yaşayan ama hep birlikte on yıl sonrasını
hayal ederek bir araya gelen bir topluluğun
gelecek kokan bostanı burası.
Kendi deyimleriyle “Roma Bostanı
insanları” açık çağrılar yaparak düzenli
olarak bostanda bir araya geliyorlar.
Birlikte üretmenin keyfine inanan birçok insan,
çocuklarıyla, komşularıyla, toprağa değmek
isteyen ve aralarına yeni katılanlarla birlikte
ekip dikiyorlar, hasat edip paylaşıyorlar.
İlk başlarda eli toprağa değmemiş olanlar,
bu buluşmalar sayesinde şimdi yeni
gelenlere bilgilerini aktaracak seviyeye
ulaşmışlar.
Bostanın olmazsa olmazı atalık tohumların
kullanılması. Bostandaki ürünlerin hepsi
atalık tohumlardan yetiştirilmiş. Ortaya
çıkan bitkisel hastalıklara ekolojik
mücadele yöntemleriyle çözüm arıyor, su
sorununun yaşandığı bostanda fitilli
yükseltilmiş sebze yataklarında üretim
yapıyorlar.
Bu hikayede yakın tarihli olarak güzel bir
noktaya gelindi: 2011 yılında Beyoğlu Semt
Dernekleri’nin Beyoğlu Kentsel Sit Alanı
Koruma Amaçlı İmar Planı’na karşı açtığı
davanın kazanılmasıyla birlikte yalnızca
Roma Bostanı için değil, Gezi ve Fındıklı
Parkı için de, yeşil alan içerisine yapılması
öngörülen her türlü yapılaşma “yeşil alan
standartlarını olumsuz etkileyen bir işlem”
olacağından iptal edildi. Bu karar
sonrasında “İstanbulluları, Cihangirlileri,

The word “bostan” is defined by Vikipedi
as a “vegetable garden” or a “watermelon
field”, with an etymology from Farsi. The
“bostan”, which can be formed in either
droughty or marshy areas depending on
the geography, also commonly refers to
“watermelon” in some regions. That said,
these days within the city, it is associated
with urban gardening, productive and
sustainable landscaping, local production,
easily accessible food, heirloom seeds,
‘prosumer’ community building, primeval
agriculture knowledge, reconnecting with
the land, and the return of the smells
and tastes we have so missed.
As the Garden Stories team, for this first
edition of the magazine, we set off to share
the different stories of four familiar bostans
(i.e. vegetable gardens) in Istanbul. During
this process, we came across gardens,
which we pass each day but rarely notice;
and we got surprised by the diversity of
the produce that we see on our table at
every meal but don’t stop to think where it
comes from. We met with the gardeners,
the communities that dream about the
future of the city; the university students,
who try to access healthy, affordable and
fairly-produced food; and the
neighborhood people, who strive to sustain
the neighborhood culture, come together
and start a local foundation to look after the
local garden.
With each visit to the gardens, new stories
surfaced, and with each exploration, the
stories gained more depth. In these
stories, we found answers to such
questions as “When and where were they
built? Which urgencies started them? What
have they been through? What are their
dreams about the future? Who are these
garden people, these producers,
consumers, volunteers?“
YEDIKULE GARDENS
Having existed in the middle of the city for
centuries together with their changing
gardeners, Yedikule Gardens have
complied with the changing conditions
and continue to feed the city to this day. As
the bread and butter of their gardeners,
the gardens are sowed and planted with
production techniques implemented for
years. Together with the Istanbul City Walls
by their side, Yedikule Gardens are a
cultural heritage. As a site of commercial
agriculture, Yedikule Gardens are among
the gardens, which feed the markets and
grocery stores of Istanbul, and which
enable a direct link between the producers
and consumers. The recent reports show
that the carbon print of the production and
logistical processes has been diminished,
and that the well water used for irrigation
as well as the produce are healthy.
These gardens bear the stories of women, men
and families, who start working in the gardens
at the crack of dawn regardless of the season,
saying ‘Ours is a hard but beautiful
profession’.
Despite the rent they pay to the
municipality, the gardeners are viewed
officially as occupiers. It is forbidden for
them to take animal fertilizer, which is
necessary for the crops to grow efficiently
and healthily, into the gardens due to the
municipality laws. Not having farmers’
documents, they cannot get agriculture
insurance nor can they benefit from
financial supports.
Recently, another chapter has been added
to this story: The Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality has announced that they have
prepared a project, which will re-actualize
the Yedikule Gardens with an “Urban
Agriculture Park” concept. The project,
which is said to aim at “protecting the
garden culture thematically within the city
and relaying our gardening history to the
future generations”, raises questions that
are still not answered, preoccupying
particularly the Yedikule Gardens
Protection Initiative and the NGO’s. How
this space will be operated, which
agriculture methods will be used in the
gardening areas, which rules of the
organic market will apply are some of the
questions that wait to be answered.

Garden Stories – Editor
ROMA GARDEN
Roman Garden is positioned at a steep
slope in Cihangir with one of the most
beautiful views of the city. It was first a
garbage site and then plans were in place
to open it up for development. The
garden’s story began to change as it was
transformed into an ever growing,
sustainable, diversified “food forest”* that
is cultivable all year round, designed using
permaculture** principles. It is a garden
imprinted by a community of people, who
live in different places but come together
and dream about the decade ahead.
In their own words the “Roma Garden
people” regularly come together in the
garden and make open calls.
Believing in the pleasure of collective
production, many people sow, plant and
harvest the soil, and share the produce
together with their children, neighbors and
those, who want to touch the soil and join in.
Thanks to these gatherings, people, who
had never before touched the soil, are at a
position to transfer their knowledge to the
newcomers.
Using heirloom seeds is a must in the
garden. All the crops that grow in the
garden are grown from heirloom seeds.
They seek solutions for the emerging
botanical illnesses using ecological
struggle practices, and they do production
in raised vegetable beds as a solution to
the water problem.
There is a recently attained silver lining to
this story: The case the Beyoğlu
Neighborhood Associations filed in 2011
against the Beyoğlu Development Plan for
the Protection of the Preserved Urban Sites
is won. This cancelled any such

diyerek kutlamalar yapan Roma Bostanı
insanları, işgalle başlayan hikayelerini
“Emsal olsun, ilham olsun!” diyerek devam
ettirmekte.
KUZGUNCUK BOSTANI
Kuzguncuk Bostanı’nın bostancısını
kaybettikten sonra değişen sahipleri ve
farklı kullanım şekilleri olsa da mahalleli bu
alanı kullanmaya hep devam etmiş ve
mahalledeki adıyla ‘İlia Bostanı’ mahalle ile
birlikte varlığını sürdürmüş. Ancak son
dönemde kamuoyunun da yakından takip
ettiği mülkiyet ve imara açılma davasıyla
belleklerimize yerleşen bu bostan,
Kuzguncuklular Derneği’nin
Kuzguncuklularla oluşturduğu alternatif
planlama ve Üsküdar Belediyesi’nin
uzlaşmacı tutumuyla bir mahalle bostanı
olarak tekrar düzenlenmiş ve kullanıma
açılmıştır.
Kuzguncuk Bostanı pek çok mahallede
örnek alınmış ve böyle alanlarda “mülkiyet
hakkı”ndan çok “kullanım hakkı”nın
konuşulmasını sağlamış, kullanıcıya yeni
kentsel kullanımlar sunulmasına ön ayak
olmuş bir mahalle hareketinin paydaşı.
Sadece mahallelerin değil, üniversitelerin,
uluslararası kent hareketlerinin de dikkatini
çekmiş, onları misafir etmiş ve atölyelere ev
sahipliği yapmış.
Mahalleliye ve bilgi evleri gibi devlet
kurumlarına bedelsiz kiralanan minik
parsellerde ürün çeşitliliği oldukça zengin.
Her yıl yapılan çekiliş sonrasında bu parseller
yeni sahipleriyle buluşuyor ve hemen ardından
bostanda heyecanlı bir çalışma başlıyor.
Bugün belirli kurallar çerçevesinde hiçbir
ticari üretim kaygısı taşımayan bu bostan,
ekim dikim alanı olmaktan çok geçmişinde
olduğu gibi mahallelinin birlikte vakit
geçirdiği, spor yaptığı, çocukların özgürce
oynadıkları bir kamusal açık alan olarak
kullanılıyor.
TARLATABAN
Tarlataban, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi
öğrencilerinin sağlıklı ve ekonomik yemek
taleplerini yüksek sesle dile getirdikleri bir
dönemde alternatif olarak pırıl pırıl ortaya
çıkan bir dayanışma bostanı.
Akademisyeninden öğrencisine bu amaçla
bir araya gelinmiş, tatillerde gidilen
memleketlerdeki tohumlar kucaklanmış,
oradan İstanbul’a Tarlataban’a taşınmış.
Bu tohumlar büyütülmüş ve şehrin
dört bir yanındaki bostanlarla paylaşılmış.
Hikaye böyle başlayınca Tarlataban
gönüllüleri özellikle atalık tohuma dikkat
çekmek için bostan alanı içerisinde bir
‘tohum kütüphanesi’ kurma fikri üzerinde
uzlaşmışlar. Yapımı halen devam eden bu
şirin kütüphane binasını da yine birlikte
inşa etmeye tüm maddi ve zamansal
zorluklara rağmen devam ediyorlar.
Aynı zamanda, Boğaziçi Mensupları
Tüketim Kooperatifi BÜKOOP’a ilk yıl
yetiştirdikleri domateslerden yaptıkları
sosları satarak okul içerisinde farklı bir
ekonomik sisteme örnek olmaya çaba
harcamışlar ki bu süreçte öğrenci
kooperatifinin kurulması için de çalışmalar
başlamış.
Farklı bölümlerde, farklı sınıflarda okuyan, bu
bostana destek veren öğrenciler mezun
olduğunda sayıları azalmış; okula yeni
başlayanlarla, dışarıdan gönüllü olarak
aralarına katılanlarla tekrar çoğalmışlar.
Bilgi sürekliliğini sağlamak için tohum ekimi
gibi temel bahçecilik konularında eğitimler
vermişler, videolar çekmişler; böylece
topluluklarını ve bostanlarını ayakta tutmayı
başarmışlar. Örnek bir üniversite/öğrenci
bostanı olarak yurtdışında bu konularla
ilgilenen gruplarla bağlantılar kurmuşlar
kent hareketlerinin içinde yer almışlar.
•
Kentlerde ürettiğimizin çok daha fazlasını
tükettiğimiz bir dönemde, şehirde tarım
yapılan bostanlar ve hikayeleri, her
zamankinden daha büyük bir önem taşıyor.
Biz de bu dört bostandan başlayarak
örülecek hikayeler daha nicelerine örnek
olsun, bostanlar çoğalsın, güçlensin,
üretici-tüketici ilişkisi kurulsun, bir araya
gelinsin, toprağın kıymeti bilinsin, çocuklar
markette gördükleri sebzelerin nerede
nasıl yetiştiğini öğrensin, atalık tohumlar
konuşulsun istedik.
Bu hikayelerin, sizin zihin haritanızda da
yollar açmasını, merak edip görmeye
gitmenizi, misafir olmanızı, çantanızda taze
yeşilliklerle eve dönerken “biz nereden
başlasak,” diye düşünmenizi hayal
ettik.
Kentlerimizde daha çok bostan ve paylaşacak
hikaye var. Sizin bostan hikayeniz neden
bunlardan biri olmasın...

construction not only in the Roma Garden,
but also in other green areas of Gezi and
Fındıklı Parks, following the reasoning that
it would be “a procedure that would affect
the standards of green spaces negatively.”
After this decision, the Roma Garden
people rejoiced by saying: “We invite the
Istanbulites, the locals of Cihangir, the
garden people, everybody, who has the
consciousness that we ourselves need to
create spaces where we can breathe, for a
picnic. We will be sharing music, food, the
sunset and our joy. Let’s continue to touch
the soil and each other. We love the
probability that another life is possible. We
insist on keeping our garden full of life and
imagining the future.” And they go on to
celebrate and carry on with their story that
began with an occupation: “Let it be an
example, let it be an inspiration!”
KUZGUNCUK GARDEN
The locals have always continued to use
the Kuzguncuk Garden, which they call
‘Ilia’s Garden’, and ensured its existence
within the neighborhood, although its
cultivators, owners and use have gone
through various changes over time.
Renowned by the public also with the past
ownership and development lawsuit, the
garden was finally re-organized and
opened to use as a neighborhood garden
thanks both to the alternative planning the
Neighborhood Association of Kuzguncuk
came up with the locals, and the
reconciliatory attitude of the Municipality
of Üsküdar.
The Kuzguncuk Garden is a stakeholder of
an exemplary neighborhood movement,
which has enabled “the right of use” rather
than “the right of property” to be discussed
in such areas, and introduced new urban
uses. It has attracted the attention of not
only the neighborhoods but also of
universities, international urban
movements, hosting and running
workshops with them.
The diversity of produce is quite rich in the
tiny blocks that are rented without charge
to the locals and state offices such as
information houses.
After the drawings that are done every year,
these blocks meet their new owners, and right
away an exciting work starts in the garden.
Bearing specific rules but no particular
commercial concerns, aside from
recreational sowing and planting, the
garden nowadays is used as a public
space where the locals including kids
spend time together, do sports activities,
and play freely as was done in the past.
TARLATABAN
Tarlataban is a solidarity garden that
brightly emerged as an alternative at a
time when the students of Boğaziçi
University loudly voiced their demands for
healthy and affordable food. Academicians
and students alike, all came together for
this purpose. They gathered seeds from
visits to various regions, brought them
back to Tarlataban in Istanbul, grown and
distributed them to other gardens all over
the city.
As the story began like this, the volunteers
of Tarlataban agreed on the idea of setting
up a ‘seed library’ within the garden area
specifically to draw attention to heirloom
seeds. Together they continue to build this
cozy library building, whose construction
still goes on despite all the financial and
time-related difficulties.
At the same time, they strove to set an
example of a different economical system
by selling the sauces made with the
tomatoes they grew in the first year to
BU-KOOP/the Boğaziçi University
Consumer Cooperative. Concurrently,
actions to found a student cooperative also
started.
Their number declined when the students
studying in different departments and classes,
and supporting this garden graduated. It
increased again with those, who started the
school anew, and those, who joined them as
volunteers from outside.
They gave trainings, shot videos on basic
gardening topics like sowing seeds in
order to provide the continuation of
knowledge; thus, they managed to sustain
their community and garden. As an
exemplary university/student garden, they
got in touch with international groups that
are interested in these subjects, and
participated in such urban movements.
•
At a time when we consume much more
than we produce in the cities, urban
gardens of agriculture and their stories
bear a greater importance than ever. We
hope the stories, which are to be
interwoven starting with these four
gardens, would set examples for many
more. We yearn for gardens to multiply and
strengthen, a producer-consumer relation
to be set up, people to gather, the value of
the soil to be known, children to learn
where and how the vegetables they see in
the grocery stores grow, and heirloom
seeds to be discussed.
We imagine that these stories would open
up new paths in your mind maps as well
and that you would be curious to go visit
the gardens. While returning home with
fresh greens in your bag, you would think,
“Where could we start from?”
In our cities there are many more gardens and
stories to share. Why wouldn’t your garden
story be one of them?
*Food forest: It is the art and science of bringing
plants together in a mutually beneficial
relationship mimicking the pattern of a forest,
creating a system of food production where
parts make more than the sum. The main idea is
that a self-sustaining system can be created,
which produces good, varied and abundant
crops, through the growth of fruits, nuts,
vegetables, herbs, mushrooms and other
beneficial plants and animals imitating the
natural forest ecosystems.
**Permaculture: “Sustainable agriculture” is the
understanding of an ecological design that
takes account of the human settlements in
nature, the agricultural practices exemplified by
natural ecosystems and the view of
sustainability.

Boğaçhan DÜNDARALP / Mimar
Boğaçhan Dündaralp, mimarım.
Yirmi yıldır Kuzguncuk’ta yaşıyorum,
Kuzguncuk sakinlerinden biriyim. Bostanın
yaklaşık otuz yıllık serüveninin büyük bir
kısmını takip ettim, içinde oldum. Son on
anda. Ama Kuzguncuk’ta hep var olan bir
bostan burası.
80’lerde Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü’ne
vakfediliyor. Aslında bütün hikaye de orada
başlıyor. 1990’da burada bir hastane
yapılması girişimi başlıyor. Tabi
Kuzguncukluların belleğinde çok güçlü bir
yere sahip olan bostan Kuzguncukluları bir
araya getiriyor. 2010’daki de bizim daha
aktif olarak içinde yer aldığımız, belki de
bugünkü bostanın bu şekilde
kullanılmasının tohumlarının atıldığı adım
oluyor. Şöyle ki, buraya bir okul yapılmak
isteniyor. Tesadüfen Boğaziçi İmar
Müdürlüğü’nde bir mimar arkadaşımız
bunun projesini görüyor ve fotoğrafını
çekiyor. Biz de buranın hava fotoğrafına o
projenin gerçek boyutlarıyla, yaklaşık
boyutlarıyla montajını yaparak başlıyoruz.
İlk aslında Kuzguncukluların haberdar
oluşu böyle oluyor.
Kuzguncuklular, burayı sadece bir ekim
dikim faaliyeti değil, bütün önemli
günlerinde ortak bir buluşma mekanı

olarak kullanıyor. “Olabildiğince biz bu
hafızayı görünür nasıl kılabiliriz?” Çünkü
burada bir sürü etkinlik, bir sürü bir araya
gelme biçimi, bir sürü paylaşım, deneyim
üretiliyor. Fakat bunların herhangi bir kaydı
görünür değil. Biz bunları görünür kılacak
bir takım araçlarla bunları ortaya döküp
çok ciddi bir çalışma hazırladık. Ve bunu
hem Boğaziçi İmar’a hem Anıtlar Kurulu’na,
hem farklı mecralara hukuki ya da diğer
kanallar dışında da bu projenin iptali için
kullandık.
Proje iptal edildi. Aslında burada Anıtlar
Kurulu onaylamadı projeyi. Çevre
Komisyonu projeyi onaylamadı ve proje
rafa kalktı ama imar durumunda bir
değişiklik olmadı. Burada hala bir
yapılaşma tehlikesi var. Bu tehlike yine

Boğaçhan Dündaralp, I’m an architect.
I’ve been living in Kuzguncuk for twenty
years; I’m one of its locals. I’ve followed
a large part of the garden’s thirty-year
adventure and been a part of it. I’ve
actively participated in it over the past
ten years.
The Kuzguncuk Garden has been under
the threat of construction for about thirty
years. Also known as Ilya’s Garden, the
garden is reportedly quite old. There is a
legend that it is 700 years old, but there
is actually no proof of that. However, this
is a garden that has always existed in
Kuzguncuk.
In the 80’s, it was endowed to the
General Directorate for Foundations. In
fact, the story starts there. In 1990, an
attempt was made to build a hospital
there. The garden brings the people of
Kuzguncuk together, holding a strong
place in their collective memory. 2010
marks the time we became more active,
taking the steps to shape the way the
garden is being used today. At that point,
plans were in place to build a school
there. By coincidence, a friend saw the
plans at the Bosphorus Development
Directorate and took a photo of it. We
started to assemble the real,
approximate dimensions of that project
onto the aerial photo of the garden. This
is actually how the people of Kuzguncuk
first found out about it.
The locals use the area not only as an
Boğaçhan DÜNDARALP / Architect
area for planting, but also as a common
meeting ground during all the important
holidays. We asked, “How can we make
the collective memories as visible as
possible?” Many events, gatherings and
shared experiences are created here.
But, there are no visible recordings of
them. Actually, we have prepared a very
serious work to disclose them and make
them visible using various means. We
submitted it via legal and other channels
to the Bosphorus Development
Directorate, the Council of Monuments
and other platforms to have the project
cancelled.
The project was cancelled. Actually, the
Council of Monuments didn’t approve it.

Her

approve the project and it was shelved, but no change occurred in its
zoning status. There was still a danger of construction here. This danger
was evaded for the time being, but in the mean time, we learned that this
area was to be rented out. There was going to be a rental bidding. As the
locals of Kuzguncuk, we were there on the bidding day. The municipality
won the bid. We went to the municipality as a delegation and asked
“What will you build here?” They replied that they wanted to use it as a
green space, as a nice park or recreational area. We said, “We have a
project for it. It is the locals’ project.” We presented the project and
conducted a joint work with the Municipality of Üsküdar Parks and
Gardens Directorate to adapt the project here.
We identified a number of principles whilst doing this. We referred to
them as arrangements and improvements to be done here. This way this
area will be used as a garden while the green texture will be improved.
Thus, it will allow new memories to be formed as part of the public
recollection. The square is being used as a cinema and for many other
events such as Hıdırellez, the Summer Festival. A fire is lit there on
Hıdırellez for example. How to do it? We dig a hole in the middle and light
the fire so it’s under control. Actually, we agreed on the principles by
considering how to enable these types of uses without harming the
structure.
Let’s say there are over a hundred small 4-to-6-meter blocks here. The
municipality is using half of these for its own Knowledge Houses and
social responsibility projects. The locals use the other half periodically by
drawing lots. A draw is held during each term. Once you draw a lot for a
period, you can’t participate in the next. In this way, it becomes an area
for sowing and planting activities that the locals use to the max.
None of the sowing and planting areas are commercial here. They are left
to locals’ initiative, used for themselves and for sharing. During harvest
times, some crops are collectively cooked and eaten. It is used in this
way.
The field has very unique positions. As a process, it’s a neighborhood
initiative and it includes collective production, design, implementation
and so on. It is a model that belongs and is unique to this place and can
be interpreted only in this context. It is distinguished from other gardens
by these features. Its relation with them is not very organic, either.
Permaculture activities are held here for educational purposes. Other
educational activities are also held for children. Many international
workshops - American, Dutch, German, and so on - have been held. It
has attracted the attention of many urban movements. We’ve been asked
to share our experiences.
We continue to open up and share our experiences with everybody as
much as possible. We have a multi-faceted approach so that this unique
situation can be a model for various purposes.
Groups of all ages use the garden. An amazing environment is created
here. For example people come here for morning walks, or with their
babies and children on the weekends or during the week. Children use it
in different ways after school time. It is not a situation that is only peculiar
to this neighborhood. Everyone that experiences the life here begins to
become a part of it. It seems that perhaps this is how this garden will be
empowered in the times to come.

ilişkilendim burayla. Yeşil alanlara
İstanbul’daki çeşiti aktörlerin, sosyal
hareketlerin, devletin, sermayenin ne çeşit
yatırımlar yaptıklarını araştıran, analiz eden

Interview
My name is Başak. I’m one of the people
of the Roma Garden. I was introduced to
the Roma Garden in 2015. When I came
to Istanbul then to do preliminary studies
for my thesis, I found out about an urban
garden that I had been following on
social media. In June 2015, I visited it to
learn what people were doing there. It
ended up being a place that connects
me to Istanbul. I got involved because of
my doctorate thesis. It is a project that
researches and analyzes what kinds of
investments various actors, social
movements, the state and capital in
Istanbul make on the green areas.
Although I was introduced to the Roma
Garden through my work, I formed a
different link with it. And though I came
from quite a different place, I introduce
myself as a person of the Roma Garden.
I connect with it not as an observer, but
as a person, who values sowing and
planting.
Mine is a different story than many
others. Of course, I value Roma Garden’s
struggle and it is a part of me. However,
as someone, who actually lived very far
from Istanbul for a long time, it’s very
special for me to cultivate the soil of
Istanbul.
When I started to work in the Roma
Garden, in an area where you can see
some of the important landmarks of
Istanbul, I felt more connected to the
land and reality of this city. It became an
element of belonging for me. It began to
Başak DURGUN / Roma Garden’s People
feel as though this was my neighborhood
garden although I live in Feneryolu. I felt I
was connecting with my real roots while
planting. This is its significance for me. It
connects me to here through my own life
story.
People come from neighborhoods like
Kadıköy, Feneryolu, the Islands. People
come even from other cities to help
during planting times and festivals.
I go to the cinema, go out at night or
come across in other gardens with many
of the friends I met here. People who
come here for the first time are greeted
with excitement. This is one of its most
important features.

karşılaşıyorum. Buraya gelen herkes çok
büyük bir heyecanla karşılanıyor. Bu da en
önemli taraflarından bir tanesi.
Burayı bilip gelen birçok insanın, ekim dikim
bahçe işleriyle ilgisi olup çok fazla bilgisi
olmayan insanların öğrendiği de bir yer.
Sosyal medyadan duyup çok gelen oluyor
etkinliklere. Ama birçok kez de gerçekten
yoldan geçerken ‘Burada garip birşeyler
oluyor, niye burada insanlar var? Bir şey mi
var?’ diye gelip ‘Merhaba,’ diyen, ‘A siz
burada bahçe mi yapıyorsunuz?’ ya da ‘Ben
sizi duymuştum ama burada olduğunu
bilmiyordum, yardım edebilir miyim?’ diyen
çok insan oluyor. Roma Bostanı’nın en önemli
özelliği çevresinde çit olmaması. Çevresinde
çit olmadığı için, çitlenmediği için herkese
açık bir alan.
Buradaki proje uzun düşünülen bir proje, bir
gıda ormanı yaratmak adına sürdürülen bir
proje.

Many people who come here are
interested in but not very
knowledgeable about gardening. Many
people come to the events by following
them on social media. At other times,
people come because they happen to
pass by and think ‘What’s happening
here, why are people here?’ They stop
and say ‘Hello, are you gardening
here?’ or ‘I’ve heard about you, but I
didn’t know the garden was here. Can I
help?’ Roma Garden’s most important
feature is that it doesn’t have a fence
around it. Since it’s not enclosed, it is
an area open for everybody.
There is a long-term project to create a
food forest. Seedlings and trees are
planted to improve and hold the soil.
There are also fruit trees on the second
level. The seasonal vegetables at the
front serve to increase interactions and
establish relations here. No chemical
pesticides are used here. We use
natural pesticides like the garlic-based
ones. When we need fertilizer, we use
chicken manure. We use heirloom
seeds as much as possible instead of
hybrid seeds. We do everything in the
most natural way possible.
It’s debatable whether we are able to
apply permaculture fully. We have
various problems because we are
located in the city and on a slope. But
the biggest rule is to engage with the
soil using natural methods and to learn
how to do it. What is produced? What
kinds of insects do we see on the
tomatoes? What’s on the zucchinis?
We share the crops here. If we collect
produce during an event, people get to
take them home. Or a passer-by,
whether he knows what goes on here
or not, can take what he sees. In that
sense, it is a very open project.

Müge TERLAN / Roma Bostanı İnsanı
Röportaj
Merhabalar, Müge Terlan benim ismim. Cihangir’de oturuyorum yaklaşık
24 yıldır, mahalleliyim. Bostan, Gezi sonrası hemen burada Cihangir’de
kurulan park forumundan sonra başladı. Bu alan çok büyük bir çöp
alanıydı aslında. İlk sene ben bostan ekibinde değildim ama başka
faaliyetleri yapıyordum forum içinde. Ama arkadaşlarımın ne kadar
uğraştığını biliyorum buradaki çöpü boşaltmak için. Toprak getirdiler,
4 tane sosyal tesis kurmak istiyorlar. Bunlardan bir tanesinin inşaattı
devam ediyor şu anda. Sonuçta bostan alanı da tehlike arz ediyor, bizim
için değil tabi ama diğerleri için. Şikayetlerimizi yapıyoruz sürekli. O yan
alan. Bu bize de iyi geliyor tabi, ruhumuza
da iyi geliyor. Benim için çok iyi, çok
burnumun dibinde, toprağa ihtiyacım
olduğunda geliyorum, temizlik yapıyorum.
Özel günlerde hepimiz bir araya gelip
ekimi, biçimi, fidelemeyi, tohumları ekmeyi
yapıyoruz. Bazı etkinlikler de yapıyoruz
zaman zaman. Dolayısıyla, bu anlayışta
insanların bir araya gelebileceği bir alan ve
rahatlatıyor. Manzaramız da çok güzel bu
arada gördüğünüz gibi.
Suyla ilgili problemimiz oldu demiştim. Arka
taraftaki binadan ilk başlarda su
alabiliyorduk, ikinci sene su vermediler.
Çağrı yapıyoruz ve çok çeşitli Nazilli’de
yaşayan birisi bile gelebiliyor. İstanbul’a
Geliyor, bilgilerini
paylaşıyor hatta. “Bu kadar da hassas
davranmayacaksınız bunlara, şöyle şöyle
sokuşturuverin” gibi bilgiler de alıyoruz.
Yazlık sebzelerimizi, daha önce
fidelediğimiz bazı yerlerden, mesela
Çengelköy’den salatalık fideleri geldi,
onları ektik. Üzerine bir malçılama ve
cansuyu ile beraber kanalların içerisine su
doldurma. Bir nevi yaz sezonunu açtık gibi.

Interview
Müge TERLAN / Roma Garden’s People
Hello, my name is Müge Terlan. I’ve been living in Cihangir for
about 24 years. The garden started after the park forum that was
held here in Cihangir following the Gezi events. This was a very
large garbage area. I wasn’t actually in the garden team the first
year; I was doing other activities within the forum. Still, I know
how hard my friends worked to remove all the garbage. They
brought soil and tried to improve it.
For two years following Gezi, planting was done only during
summer. First, the vegetable beds were made because it is a
difficult land to cultivate due to the area’s steepness. Later, in the
third year, the idea of permaculture emerged largely because of
the water problem we had during summer time. The vegetable
beds are arranged layer by layer. If I’m not mistaken, there are
fibers at the bottom and clinker ash on top of that. There is a pipe
in it with holes. It is a system that locks the water in and allows
the vegetables to absorb it slowly. The pipe is filled once and it
retains water for a long time during the summer.
Beginning with the third year, we’ve been planting during four
seasons. I’ve been here since the second year. It wasn’t very
professional before the permaculture stage. After that a new logic
was applied. We began to consider which vegetables to plant
next to each other so that one doesn’t intrude with the other.
This area is under danger because they want to build four social
facilities in the garden. One of them is under construction right
now. After all, the garden area poses a threat, of course not to us,
but to the others. In that construction area next door, they are
advancing more every single day and doing something new. And
we’re constantly filing complaints. Sometimes we get a reply,
sometimes we don’t. On one hand, we are waiting, but we are
also trying to protect the green area as much as we can. This is
the second area where they want to build a social facility. There
are two more areas in the garden below.
Two experts came and in their reports they used the same
sentences we use. In a way they like how things are here. There
is a process that continues in our favor.
However, since they haven’t issued that
decision yet, the construction next door
continues and the garden area is in
danger.
We are trying to create a food forest
here. We think that the fruit trees that we
have planted will grow in five years.
We plant the vegetables mostly in the
vegetable beds and we try to plant as
many trees as possible. In fact, we aim to
save and enlarge this green area here
and show that it can be achieved. This
area was filled with garbage when it was
first started. Now it is a green area that
we can save. Of course this makes us
feel good and uplifts our spirits. It’s really
good for me; I live nearby and come to
do some cleaning when I need to feel the
soil. On special days, we gather to sow
seeds, plant or reap. We also have
events time to time. It’s an area where
people can come together. It’s relaxing.
In addition, the view is very beautiful as
you can see.
Earlier I said we had a problem with
water. Initially we were able to get water
from the building at the back, but they
didn’t provide water in the second year.
We make a call and people from various
places like Nazilli come. People, who
have come to Istanbul and happened to
learn about the call that day. People, who
have experience working with the soil.
They come and share their knowledge.
We get hints like ‘You shouldn’t be too
gentle with these, just immerse them like
this.’
When planting our summer vegetables,
for example, the cucumber seedlings
came from Çengelköy. After mulching
and the first watering, we filled the
canals with water. Summer season is
almost here.

Edible Food Forests:
Invitation to Adventure
Imagine yourself in a forest, where your surrounding is almost
completely full of food. When you look up at the sky, you see
ripened fruits and nuts dangling from the branches. When you
look down at the ground, there are blueberries, brambles,
fruits and nutritiuous plants you’ve never seen before. It’s not a
dream! All you need is to design a food forest.

Çiğdem ARTIK / Tarlataban Gönüllüsü
Ben Çiğdem, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’nden
mezunum, Tarlataban gönüllüsüyüm. Beş
yıldır Tarlataban’da gönüllülük yapıyorum.
Tarlataban’a dahil olma sürecim Starbucks
işgaliyle başladı. O dönemde okulda
Starbucks açılmıştı ve öğrenciler ‘Neden
okulda sermaye yer alıyor?’ diye
Starbucks’ı işgal etmişlerdi. Starbucks
işgali sırasında da bir belgesel gösterimi ile
gıdanın adil dağıtılamaması, sağlıklı gıdaya
ulaşımın zor olması üzerinden tartışmalar
başladı.
Bizim okuldaki Boğaziçi Üniversitesi
Tüketim Kooperatifi BÜKOOP bu
tartışmalara dahil oldu. Sonrasında da
okulda tarım mümkün mü, üniversitede
tarım mümkün mü, sorularıyla beraber iki
ekip bir araya geldi. Diğer ekip de
Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Çevre Kulübü’ydü.
O dönemde onlar da bahçecilik yapmak
istiyorlardı ve okuldan bir arazi talep
etmişlerdi. Şu an mevcut Tarlataban arazisi
o dönemde okulun Çevre Kulübü’ne
verdiği bir araziydi.
O dönemde tartışmalar başladı. Daha
toprağı, araziyi görmeden ‘Biz nasıl tarım
yapabiliriz, biz neden tarım yapıyoruz,
neden kentte tarım önemlidir?’ gibi sorular
ve metodolojisi tartışıldı. Orada ‘Tarlataban
kimdir?’ metni oluştu. Metnin içinde de
amaçlarımız vardı:
‘Biz kesinlikle yerel tohum kullanmalıyız,
hibrid tohum kullanmamalıyız.’
‘Yerel tohum neden önemlidir? Çünkü
devlet sürdürülebilir bir tohumu engelliyor,
Röportaj
yasayla engelliyor, bizim bunu
sürdürmemiz gerekiyor.’
’Ekolojik mücadelelere destek vermeliyiz.’
‘Ekolojik tarım yapmalıyız; ilaç, gübre ve
diğer pestisistleri kullanmamalıyız çünkü
bunlar aslında doğaya zarar verir.’
Bu tartışmalardan sonra, daha doğrusu bu
amaçlarımızdan sonra biz tarlaya indik. İlk
etapta tohum meselesi çok önemli olduğu
için tohumu nereden bulacağız sorusu
ortaya çıktı. Tohumu bulmak çok zordu.
Şöyle ki, köylerde sandıklardan tohumları
çıkardılar; Tohum İzi Derneği’nin
kütüphaneleri vardı, oradan tohum geldi.
Anadolu’da tohum bulamadık, gittik
Fransa’da Kokopelli Tohum Bankası vardı,
oradan tohumlar geldi. Bir havuz
oluşturduk biz ama o havuzu oluşturmak

Interview
My name is Çiğdem. I’m a Boğaziçi
University graduate. I’ve been
volunteering at Tarlataban for five years.
My involvement in Tarlataban started with
the occupation of Starbucks. At that time,
a Starbucks was opened at the school
and students occupied it, saying: ‘What
place does capital have at the school?’
The screening of a documentary during
the occupation kicked off debates over
how food is not distributed fairly and how
hard it is to access healthy food.
The Boğaziçi University Consumer
Cooperative, BU-KOOP, got involved in
these debates. Afterwards, two teams
came together posing the question
whether agriculture is possible at the
school or not. The second team was
Boğaziçi University’s Environmental
Society. They also wanted to do
gardening at the time and asked the
school for land. The current Tarlataban
land is the one the school gave to the
Environmental Society.
Debates started during that period. Long
before we were on the land, we
discussed questions like: Why do we do
agriculture? How should we do
agriculture? Why is agriculture important
in the city? We formulated the text to
outline who Tarlataban is and what our
goals are:
‘We should definitely use local seeds
and not hybrid seeds.’
‘Why are the local seeds important? The
Çiğdem ARTIK / Tarlataban Volunteer
state is using the laws to ban sustainable
seeds. We need to sustain them.’
‘We should support ecological struggles.’
‘We should do ecological agriculture. We
shouldn’t use pharma, fertilizers and
other pesticides because they harm the
environment.’
Then we got down to the field. Given
their significance, we first inquired about
how to find seeds. Finding seeds was
very difficult. They took the seeds out of
the chests in villages. Some seeds came
from the library of the Seed Trail
Association. We couldn’t find seeds in
Anatolia and we went to France to get
them from the Kokopelli Seed Bank. We
created a pool, but it was a challenging
process. Afterwards, we sowed the

da biraz zorlu bir süreç olmuştu.
Sonrasında da tohumları ektik, araziye
tohumları serptik ve ürün yetiştirmeye
başladık. İlk tarlanın girişimi orada başlamış
oldu. 2012 yılında ilk olarak bir araya
gelişimiz, sonrasında tohum buluşumuz,
sonrasında da araziyi çapalamamız gibi
başladı. Pratikte var olmaya başladık.
Tarlataban'a kimler katılıyordu o dönemde?
Müşterekler’den gelenler vardı, Kent
Savunmaları’ndan gelenler vardı. O iş yükü
döneminde bu insanların varlığıyla da
çalışmalarımızı daha rahat yürüttük.
Öğrenciyle dışarıdan gelen insanların
karşılaşma alanını yarattık. Hatta
öğrencilerin birbiriyle karşılaşma alanını bir
pratikten yaratmış oldu Tarlataban. Kendi
varlığıyla bunu oluşturdu.
Mesela ben daha önce hiç tarım
yapmamıştım, elim tohuma değmemişti,
toprakla uğraşmamıştım çok fazla. Bu
karşılaşma alanı, bu insanlarla bir arada
olma alanında herkes bilgiyi birbirine
vermiş oldu. Zaten amaçlarımızdan bir
tanesi de yaş hiyerarşisi olmayacak,
cinsiyet hiyerarşisi olmayacak, herkes
burada eşit koşullarda bir arada çalışacak,
yatay ilişkileneceğiz biz burada. Karar alma
oldu. Sonuçta doğayla beraber hareket
etmek zorundasın ve iki mevsimi var.
Ekim-dikim mevsimleri var. Üniversite de bu
alanı yaratabiliyor bir noktada, yani o akışı
sağlayabiliyordu. O dönemlerde kimler
gönüllü oluyordu, dışarıdan gelenler vardı.
Biz de haftasonu yapalım, toplaşma
günümüz haftasonu olsun ve gelmek
isteyen gönüllüler o gün gelsin dedik. Bu
da Pazar günüydü. Tatil günü olduğu için
her Pazar oraya insanlar hala geliyor.
İlk yılki ürün döngüsüyle sonrakiler fark etti
aslında. İlk yıl toprak çok verimliydi, belki
çok fazla heyecanla biz çok fazla fide
ekmiştik. 100-200 kiloya yakın
domatesimiz, biberimiz, patlıcanımız,
birçok ürünümüz çıktı ve ne yapacağımız
bilemedik. Çünkü çoğu Ağustos ayında
oluyor ve Ağustos ayında okulda öğrenci
olmuyor. Burada zaten dışardan gelen
insanlar hemen orayı tamamladılar. Bir
kısmını, Tarlabaşı’nda mutfak var, Göçmen
Dayanışma Mutfağı, kasalara doldurup
onlara gönderdik. Sonrasında hala
domates vardı, hala biber vardı. Onları
konserve yaptı birkaç arkadaş hocalarla
beraber. Okul yemekhanesinde yapıldı ve
BÜKOOP’ta satıldı.
Daha yeni oluşmaya başlayan, yine
Tarlataban’la aynı dönemde başlayan
Öğrenci Kooperatifi var, o da aslında bir
kantin şeklinde çalışıyor. Öğrencinin kendi
yemeğini yaptığı kantini. O da aynı
amaçlarla, adil, sağlıklı, ulaşılabilir,
erişilebilir gıdayı hedefliyor. Onlarla birlikte
çalıştık, ürünlerin bir kısmını onlara verdik,
daha doğrusu konserveleri. İlk yılın ürün
döngüsü öyle oldu. Sonrasında da
yetiştirilen ürünleri biz burada üretiyoruz,
biz burada model oluşturuyoruz. Tarımı
yapıyoruz, temsili bir tarım. Burada
bakkal misali. Yani doğrudan üreticiden
almasını hedefliyor BÜKOOP da. Böyle bir
döngü yarattık. İlk tüketilen yer tarla oluyor,
tarlaya gelen çalışan insanlar orada onu
tüketir artanları satarız şeklinde bir
döngüsü var.

n
seeds and began to grow crops. Thus,
our first practices began. First we came
together in 2012, and then we found
seeds and started to hoe the land. We
began to exist in practice, too.
Who was participating in Tarlataban at
that time? There were people coming
from Our Commons and from Urban
Defenses. Their presence helped us work
more effortlessly. We created an
encounter space for the students and the
people from the outside. Tarlataban even
created an encounter space for the
students thanks to practice and its own
existence.
For example, I hadn’t done agriculture at
all before. My hands hadn’t touched any
seeds. I hadn’t dealt with soil very much.
In this encounter or
being-together-with-people space,
everybody shared information with one
another. It was our goal that there
wouldn’t be a hierarchy of age or gender.
Everybody would work here together
equally and we would be linked
horizontally. The decision-making
mechanism would work like that, too, and
it was all coming true.
The garden had a very fluid structure in
those five years. After all, you have to act
together with nature and it has two
seasons. There are planting seasons. The
university was able to create this space
at some point by enabling that flow. At
those times, outsiders appeared as
volunteers. We set our meeting day on
the weekend so that those volunteers
could come. It would be Sunday. People
still come here every Sunday since it is a
day off.
The cycle of crops in the first year
differed a lot from the ones to follow. The
soil was very fertile that first year, and
maybe, in our excitement, we planted too
many seedlings. We got about 100-200
kilos of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants
and many other crops. We didn’t know
what to do with them because it was
August and there are no students at
school then. Outsiders connected the
dots for us. We put part of the produce in
crates and sent them to the Migrant
Solidarity Kitchen in Tarlabaşı. Some
friends, together with lecturers, canned
the left over tomatoes and peppers. They
were prepared in the school’s cafeteria
and sold at BU-KOOP.
The Student Cooperative, which began
its work the same time Tarlataban did,
functions much like a canteen. Students
cook their own food there. It has the
same objectives of accessing fair,
healthy and accessible food. We worked
with them and gave them some of the
canned produce. The produce cycle was
like this in the first year. We produce all
the crops here and we create a model.
We do representative agriculture here.
We send what we produce to the Student
Cooperative, which in turn prepares the
meal. If we have a lot of produce, we sell
it at BU-KOOP, which is somewhat like a
grocery. BU-KOOP also aims to get
people to buy directly from the producer.
We have created such a cycle. The field
is where the produce is consumed first.
People who work on the field consume
the produce there and we sell the rest.
Making international links is not so
problematic because agricultural policies
and problems are similar around the
world. So, the gardens in Turkey are
actually related to those abroad. We
came together with Kokopelli and the
Greek Peliti team in this way. There were

Yurtdışıyla bağlantıya geçmek aslında çok
da sıkıntılı değil çünkü Türkiye’nin yaşadığı
tarım problemleri, tarım politikaları aslında
dünyada da geçerli. Bu amaçla da biz bir
araya geldiğimizde Türkiye’deki var olan
bostanlar ya da oluşumlar zaten yurtdışıyla
da bağlantılı oluyor. Kokopelli ya da
Yunanistan’daki Peliti ekibiyle bu şekilde bir
araya geldik. Kişisel bağlantılar ama
aslında biraz da örgütsel bağlantılar vardı.
Bizim tohum ihtiyacımız olduğunu
öğrenince ya da Tarlataban oluşmaya
başladığında, daha biz tarlaya çapaya
girmeden önce Kokopelli Türkiye’ye
gelmişti. Bir tohum eğitimi vermeye gelmişti
çiftçilere. O dönemde de Tarlataban’a da
uğramışlardı. Bizim ihtiyaçlarımız ne olabilir
diyerek tohumlar bırakmışlardı, çok fazla
domates çeşitleri vardı. Peliti ekibi yine aynı
sene yazın gelmişti, bir ekmek atölyesi için
gelmişlerdi İstanbul’a. Bizim varlığımızı
öğrenip Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’ne de gelip
küçük çaplı bir atölye yapmışlardı, topluluk
nasıl oluşur üstüne bir atölye.
Onun dışında da Türkiye’de Çiftçi
Sendikaları Konfederasyonu var, kısaca
Çitfçi-Sen. Biz tarım politikalarını da biraz
okumaya başlayınca Çiftçi-Sen’e ulaştık.
Orada Abdullah Aysu’nun kitaplarını
okumuştuk. Abdullah ağabey BÜKOOP’la
da ilişkide olduğu için Boğaziçi
Üniversitesi’ne çok gelip gidiyordu. Böyle
olunca Abdullah ağabey bize ‘La Via
Campesina’ hareketini anlattı. Dünya
genelinde 200 milyondan fazla üyesinin
olduğu bir çiftçi hareketi. Biz çok etkilendik
bundan ve yüzümüzü bir yandan kampüse
dönmüş, bir yandan İstanbul’a ve
Türkiye’ye dönmüşken, bir yandan da
yurtdışında neler olduğuna dair takip
mekanizması oluşturduk kendi aramızda.
Bunlar biraz daha teorik, izleme, tartışma
ortamını yaratan şeylerdi.
Pratik anlamda da elimizde çok fazla
tohum vardı. Kendimiz de üretmeye
başlamıştık. Her üretimden sonra kesinlikle
tohuma ayırıyorduk. İkinci ya da üçüncü
senesinde karar aldık. Çok fazla
tohumumuz vardı. Gezi Parkı eylemlerinden
sonra çok fazla kent bostanları hareketi
başlamıştı. Bizde sera var, sera kamusal
alandır. Biz ne yapabiliriz? Buradan
yüzlerce binlerce fide çıkarabiliriz, bu
fideleri de aslında bostanlara dağıtabiliriz.
Evinde bahçesinde yapmak isteyenlere
dağıtabiliriz.
O dönem gerçekten yüzlerce tohum attık,
çok farklı sebze türlerinin tohumlarını attık
ya da tohumların kendilerini verdik.
Bunların arasında Roma Bostanı vardı,
Gezi Bostanı vardı, Kuzguncuk vardı…
Yeni oluşmaya başlayan bostanlara biz
vermeye başladık. Fideleri veriyoruz.
Yerel tohum
dağıtıyorlar bostanlara ve bunlara fide
üretecek yer arıyorlar. Biz de ‘Biz Kent
Bostanları’na fide yetiştiririz çünkü seramız
var ve bakabilecek kadar gönüllümüz var,’
dedik ve tohumları Kent Bostanları için
atmış olduk bu sene. Tohum meselesi çok
önemli. Yeni çıkacak milli tarım projesiyle
de daha kritik hale gelece yerel tohum. O
yüzden biz burada tohum kütüphanesi
oluşturalım, tohumları fideye çevirip,
İstanbul genelinde bostanlara dağıtalım,
insanlara birebir verelim dedik. Bu amaçla
tohum toplamaya başladık. Tohum eğitimi
yaptık zaten. Tohum nedir, yerel tohum
nedir, nasıl saklanır, nasıl kullanılır konulu.
Bu senenin başında, Aralık ayında tohum
eğitimi aldık. Bundan sonra da devam
ettireceğiz bilgi aktarımı için.
Öğrenci biraz bel kemiğini oluşturuyor.
Öğrenci, çalışan ya da hoca, yani okul
mensupları. Dışarıdan gelen insanlar da
haftasonu iş yükünü alan insanlar oluyor.
Gönül ister ki şu sıkıntılı zor zamanlar
geçsin, tekrardan dışardan insanlarla
beraber çalışmaya başlayalım.
İlk başta Çevre Kulübü’ydü, şu anda Köy
Kooperatifi Kulübü var. Onlarla beraber
etkinlikler yapıyoruz; eğitim zaten bir
tanesi. Bir yüzümüzü okula, bir yüzümüzü
tarlaya, bir yüzümüzü Kent Bostanları’na ve
İstanbul’a dönmüş durumdayız. Bir yandan
da, La Via Campasine hareketinin bir
parçası olarak gıda egemenliği konusunda
yurt dışına da dönmüş bir yapısı var
Tarlataban’ın.
Bunları, hepsi çok büyük şeyler. Varlığımız
da pratikle oluyor. Beraber kolektif bir
şekilde üreterek varlığımızı devam
ettirebiliyoruz.

personal as well as organizational
connections. Kokopelli came to Turkey
as Tarlataban was being formed, even
before we began to till the soil. They
came to provide training for farmers
about seeds. They also stopped by
Tarlataban at that time. They left us
seeds, taking our urgencies into
consideration. They had many types of
tomatoes. The Peliti team came in the
summer of the same year. They came to
Istanbul for a bread workshop. Learning
about us, they came to Boğaziçi
University and did a small-scale
workshop about how to build a
community.
In addition, there is the Farmers’ Union
Confederation in Turkey, Çiftçi-Sen. When
we began reading a bit about agricultural
policies, we reached out to Çiftçi-Sen.
We read Abdullah Aysu’s books. Since
Abdullah was in touch with BU-KOOP, he
used to visit Boğaziçi University a lot.
Abdullah told us about the movement ‘La
Via Campesina’. It is a worldwide
farmers’ movement that has over 200
million members. We were very
impressed by it. While we turned our
face to the campus, Istanbul and Turkey,
we created a monitoring mechanism
about what goes on abroad. All of these
were a bit more theoretical, which
created the basis for following and
debating the issues.
In practical terms, we had many seeds at
hand. We started to produce for
ourselves as well. After every production
cycle, we reserved seeds for ourselves.
We made that decision in the second or
third year. Many urban garden
movements began after the Gezi Park
protests. We have a greenhouse, which
is a public space. What can we do with
it? We can provide hundreds, even
thousands of seedlings from here, and
we can distribute them to the gardens.
We can distribute them to those, who
want to grow them at home or in their
gardens.
At that time, we sowed hundreds of
various vegetable seeds and we gave
the rest of them away. There were the
Roman, Gezi and Kuzguncuk Garden.
We started distributing seeds to the
newly forming gardens. We gave away
many seedlings with announcements we
make though our personal social media
and web page. People came and took
seedlings. This exchange of seedlings
and seeds continued.
This year there is a project called “Urban
Gardens” by the Earth Association. They
distribute local seeds to gardens and
look for places to produce seedlings. We
said, ‘We grow seedlings for Urban
Gardens because we have a greenhouse
and enough volunteers to look after
them.’ That is how we happened to sow
seeds for Urban Gardens this year.
The issue of seeds is very important.
Local seeds will become an even more
critical problem with the national
agricultural project that will come out
soon. Therefore, we’ve decided we
should form a seed library here, convert
the seeds into seedlings and distribute
them to gardens across Istanbul or to
individual people. For this reason, we
collected many seeds and conducted
trainings on topics such as: ‘What is
seed? What is local seed? How is it kept?
How is it used?’ We also had training on
seeds last December. We will continue
this knowledge sharing.
Students are the backbone of all this as
well as employees and lecturers. People
coming from outside also help reduce
the workload over the weekends. We
wish these challenging times to be over,
and we want to work together with
people from outside again.
First there was the Environmental
Society, now there is the Village
Cooperative Club. We organize events
with them, including trainings. We turn
our face to our school, our garden and
the urban gardens in Istanbul.
Concurrently, we form relations
internationally concerning food
sovereignty, being a part of La Via
Campesina movement.
All of these bear huge significance.
We exist through practice. Together we
sustain our presence by producing
collectively.

Ben İstanbul Yedikule’de Bostancılar
Derneği başkanı Özkan Ökten.
İstanbul’un Aksaray, Samatya gibi
yerlerinde bahçıvanlık yaparak bu günlere
kadar geldik. Benden önce benim
yaptığım yerde halamın oğlu 40-42 sene
kadar kaldı. O artık yaşlandı. Yapamaz

22 senedir buradayım.
Benden sonra çocuklarım devam edecek...
Çocuklarım zaten bahçıvan, iki tane oğlum

sahip çıkabilirsek devam edeceğiz. Ama
burası giderse başka tarım yapacak bir

Yaklaşık otuz bahçıvanız, hepimiz
Kastamonulu, Cideliyiz. Buradan Silivri’ye

onlardan alıyoruz, onlar da bizim gibi dede
tohumlarıyla çalışıyorlar.
Yazın domates, biber, patlıcan, maydanoz,
semizotu, reyhan, fesleğen, kereviz

Interview
I’m Özkan Ökten, head of the Gardeners
Association in Yedikule, Istanbul.
To this day, we’ve been gardening in the
neighborhoods of Istanbul such as
Aksaray and Samatya. Before me, my
cousin worked here for 40-42 years. I
took over when he got old and could no
longer work. I’ve been here for more or
less 22 years.
My sons will take over after me. I have
two sons; both are gardeners. If they
take over, if the fortress survives, and if
we can protect our world heritage here,
we will carry on. But, if we lose this
place, we don’t have any other land to
cultivate.
We are about thirty gardeners here. We
are all from Cide, Kastamonu. We have
gardener friends from here all the way to
Silivri; we are fellow townsmen. We are
maybe a thousand families in Istanbul.
When in need, we get the seeds from
them. They also work with heirloom
seeds like we do.
Tomato, pepper, eggplant, parsley,
purslane, sweet basil, regular basil and
celery are grown in the summer.
Cauliflower, white cabbage, red cabbage
and lettuce are grown in the winter. In
spring we grow what we call Yedikule
lettuce and parsley. In autumn, black
cabbage and chard are the main crops.
Özkan ÖKTEN / Gardener
We need a greenhouse to grow crops
before their season. For example, if there
was a greenhouse, we could have
everything right this month. We could
have everything you look for and see in
the markets. Instead those crops come
from places like Antalya, Mersin,
Iskenderun and Adana. People eat their
produces.
Our crops go to markets, greengrocers,
fixed-menu shops, cafés and restaurants.
Some families that know about us come
here and do their shopping. I can say we
feed maybe not one fourth of Istanbul but
at least one-eight of it. People can park
their cars and walk to the garden. They
can buy whatever type and quantity of

çocuğumuzu okutalım diye uğraşıyoruz. En azından buranın
halkı buradan daha ucuza yiyebilir.
Bazı düzenlemeler olsa, en azından dört-beş bölgede ufak
tezgahlarımız olsa, bizi halk, mahalleli, İstanbul’un muhtelif
semtlerinden geçen insanlar görse, bir-iki tane cep yapılsa
en azından, iyi olur. Bizi tanımış olurlar, bahçelerimizi gezmiş
olurlar, bu sayede kaleleri görmüş olurlar. Yani burada bir
dünya mirasının nasıl yaşatıldığı, nasıl yaşanıldığını görürler.
Biz de memnun oluruz. Hem biz de satış yaparız, hem de
onlar buraları görmüş olur. Çocuklar bir domatesi, bir biberi,
bir patlıcanı nasıl yetiştiriyoruz, nasıl dikiyoruz, bir kıvırcık, bir
maydonoz nasıl meydana geliyor, bunları görür. Yani okulda
derste göreceğine canlı canlı tabiatta görür bunu. Çok güzel
olur aslında.
Biz toprağımızı analiz ettirdik. Mallarımızı analiz ettirdik
Hıfsızssıha’da. Bizim mallarımız gayet temiz çıktı. Egzoz
gazının, şehrin tozunun, kimyasal atıkların olmadığı bir mal
olarak elimize bir netice geldi. Hiçbir katkı yoktur. Biz
kendimiz hayvansal gübrelerle yetiştirme yapıyoruz,
ilaçlamamızı yapıyoruz. Tabi ilaçlama olmadan olmuyor, onu
mecburi yapıyoruz. Yıllardır aynı şekilde devam ediyoruz.
Ama gübre almakta zorlanıyoruz. Belediye bize kamyon
buraya yanaştığında müsaade etmiyor; şehirden geçerken
koku salıyor diye şu anda alamıyoruz. Hayvan gübresinin
kıymeti toprağı eski haline döndürüyor, yani orijinal haline
getiriyor, toprağı besliyor. Ama toprak çalışa çalışa zamanla
kendini kaybetmiş oluyor. Ya tarımsal gübre kullanmak
zorundasın, ya da hayvan gübresi. Hayvan gübresi olsa
daha iyi oluyor.
Buranın mülkiyeti, dünya mirası, kale. Belediyede işgalci
olarak gözüküyoruz. Ecrimisil kira veriyoruz. Zaten yaklaşık
30-35 senedir ecrimisil kira veriyoruz.
kira veriyoruz. Bizim verdiğimiz kiranın kalelerin tamiratına
gitmesi lazım. Burasının emniyetini sağlamaya çalışıyoruz
elimizden geldiği kadar. Geceleri burada yatıp bekleyen
arkadaşlarımız var.
Burada 23-24 tane kuyumuz var. Herkesin kuyusu var. Bazı
arkadaşlar iki kişi bir suluyor. Onların yeri küçük olduğu için
iki kişi bir kuyu kullanıyorlar. Bahçeyi mesela bölüyorsun,
tava haline getiriyorsun. Sırayla hepsine kademe kademe su
veriliyor. Ama yağmurlama olursa devamlı vermeniz lazım.
Elektrik tüketmeniz lazım, suyu az da olsa kullanmanız
lazım. Biz bir sulama yapıyoruz, bir hafta bize yetiyor aşağı
yukarı.
Biz İstanbul halkını bekliyoruz buraya, alışveriş yapsın diye.
Biz aşağı yukarı 70-75 senedir buralardayız. İstanbul halkını
buralara bekleriz. Gelsinler alışverişlerini yapsınlar.
Çocuklarıyla gezsinler. Buyursunlar. Çayını kahvesini
getirsin, yanında termosuyla gelsinler piknik yapsınlar,
otursunlar. Biz bekleriz hepsini.

our produce they want; there is no problem with that.
We expect them here. We produce these crops so that
we can sell them and use the money for our children’s
education. At least the locals can buy the goods for
cheaper here.
It would be good to make some arrangements. For
example, we could set four or five stalls for people
from the neighborhood or from other parts of the city
to spot when passing by. A few small pockets could
be made on the road. People would get to know us,
visit our gardens, and this way they’d see the fortress
walls. They would see how a world heritage is
maintained and experienced here. This would make us
very happy. We would sell our produce and they
would experience the heritage here. Children would
see how we plant and grow tomato, pepper, eggplant,
lettuce and parsley... They would experience this in
nature instead of the class setting.
We had our soil and crops analyzed by the Hygiene
Institute. They were rated very clean. We got a report
showing our crops have no exhaust fumes, urban dust
or chemical wastes. There are no additives. We
fertilize with animal manure. Of course we need to use
pesticides. We’ve done things this way for years.
However, it’s difficult to obtain fertilizers. The
municipality doesn’t allow us to park the trucks by the
road here. They say the fertilizer emits an odor while
passing through the city. Animal manure is valuable
because it nourishes and reverts the soil to its original
state. But, the soil loses its nutrients in time. You have
to use either agricultural fertilizer or animal manure. It
is better when it is animal manure.
The property here is part of the fortress, a world
heritage site. Municipality views us as intruders. We’ve
been paying rent as “mesne profits” (payment for
intrusion) for about 30-35 years. During the Byzantine
Period, gardeners paid in gold or coins and helped
repair the fortress. Now we pay rent as mesne profits.
It should be used to repair the fortress. We try to
ensure security here as much as we can. We have
colleagues, who keep watch overnight.
We have 23-24 wells. Everybody has a well. In some
cases, two people use one well if their lands are small.
We divide the garden into blocks and water them
gradually. If sprinklers were used instead, you’d need
to do it continuously. You then consume electricity and
more water. We irrigate once and it is enough for about
a week.
We are waiting for the Istanbulites to come do their
shopping. We’ve been here for about 70-75 years. We
keep waiting for them here. They can come, do their
shopping, visit with their children. They can bring their
tea or coffee. They can sit down and have a picnic.
They are always welcome.
