ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Alumnae, Families and Friends, 

We have many successes to celebrate this 

year. One hundred percent of the class of 

2010 went on to further their educations 

at institutions of higher learning. Their 

achievements have been impressive, and the 

whole Pres family looks forward to watching 

their continued success in the years to come. 

It was thrilling to attend the very first 

volleyball game in the new Arts & Athletic 

Center. I watched our girls come onto the 

floor with a pride in their school that was 

truly moving. Now that we have completed 

one year of use, it is easy to see what an 

amazing addition this facility has been. It is 

used virtually nonstop for academics, athletics, 

drama, music, dance, visual arts … and 

alumnae, who now have their own room to 

store archival material and meeting space for 

reunions. The building itself has won awards 

for its sensitivity to the historic architecture of 

the original school and neighborhood. 

As we celebrate achievements, I invite you 

to join everyone in the Pres family as we 

maintain our unwavering commitment to two 

key areas for the future: 

• Provide a Pres education for every girl who 

desires it, regardless of her family’s ability 

to pay 

• Achieve our $5 million goal for completion 

of the first-ever Pres capital campaign for 

the Arts & Athletic Center 

I know you have many worthy requests for 

your donations. On behalf of the 20 girls who 

could not attend Pres this year because we 

could not provide sufficient financial support, 

I ask that you consider a “bold” donation 

to the Annual Campaign. On behalf of the 

generations of girls who will eventually pass 

through our doors, I ask that you consider a 

“bold” donation to the Capital Campaign. As 

you look back on your experiences with Pres, I 

hope you consider all the many girls who are 

looking forward.

Every day, we are inspired by the amazing students who walk the halls of Pres. We are also 

inspired by the girls who were unable to attend Pres this year. Although 46 percent of our 

students receive financial assistance, 20 capable girls who wanted to attend Pres were not able 

to do so because we could not provide the financial help to make it possible. In a difficult 

economy, the need continues to grow. 

In this Annual Report, alumnae look back on their experiences and current students look 

forward to reaching their dreams. As you remember fondly your own experiences at Pres, please 

remember those girls you have never met who are looking to you for support. Let us resolve: 

Financial ability to pay will never again keep a girl from attending Pres. Will you reach out with 

a donation to the Annual Fund?

ACADEMIC 

DREAMER 

scholAr extends lessons 

with hAnds-on experience 

In middle school, Daisha Webster researched Jefferson County high schools and chose 

Presentation. “I wanted a school small enough to know everyone.” 

She was drawn to the school’s downtown location and welcoming atmosphere. 

“I love my teachers. They are engaged in students’ success,” said the 15-yearold 

sophomore. 

Politics and elections are passions to this A-student, who dreams of studying 

political science at Harvard, working at CNN and traveling the world. Math is her favorite 

subject and oratorical competitions provide an outlet for her boundless intellectual energy. 

Hands-on experience is important to Daisha. She tutors other students and has served 

internships with the Commonwealth Attorney’s office and Louisville’s Juneteenth Legacy Theatre. 

Curious and diligent, Daisha routinely spends three to four hours a day on homework. “It’s 

something I like to do. I want to be proud of my work—or there is no reason to put my name on 

it,” she said.

If you followed a path to the center of the Herculean relief efforts in Haiti, it will lead you to 

Laura Dills (Class of ’94). 

As director of Catholic Relief Services there, Dills, 34, manages a $70 million emergency 

program and a team of 700 people helping Haitians. Preparation for the work began years ago at 

Pres where Dills was a top student and leader with a keen interest in helping others. 

After high school, she earned an undergraduate degree at Spalding University followed by 

two masters’ degrees: one in development management from American University and one in 

business administration from Regis University. 

Her education equipped her for the complicated work she’s been doing for CRS in four African 

countries, India and now Haiti. 

As a teenager, Dills admired a Pres teacher’s efforts to help the homeless. Following her example, 

Dills worked with runaway teens at a downtown Louisville shelter for her senior service project. 

Dills’ natural leadership skills were nurtured at Pres where she was president of student 

government her senior year. “We were allowed to really dream—if you could imagine it, it could 

happen,” she said.

Singing soprano in the choral program, acting 

in school musicals and playing volleyball are 

just a few of Laura Krauser’s long list 

of activities. 

There’s no stopping this creative Pres junior. 

“I’m a motivated person and I enjoy working 

hard,” said Laura, 16, whose older sister, 

mother and grandmother also graduated 

from Pres. 

When it came to choosing a high school, it 

wasn’t family history that persuaded Laura. 

It was the “calm, relaxed and collected” 

personality of principal Barbara Wine (Class 

of ’67), Laura said. 

As a Pres student ambassador, Laura enjoys 

sharing her enthusiasm for the school. She

points out that the school’s student body 

reflects a vast number of zip codes. “I think 

that helps me discuss and empathize with 

others. It makes me more relatable,” 

she said. 

Laura, who played Maria in the school’s 

production of “The Sound of Music,” imagines 

studying voice and theater in college. Her 

art class with Susanne Iles has Laura excited 

about a career that would combine her interest 

in the arts with social service. “It would be 

cool to be an art therapist and help people 

express what they can’t say through art. I’m 

getting excited just talking about it!”

When Susanne Firestone Iles was a Presentation 

student, she told her art teacher that one day she 

wanted to come back and teach art. 

The 2001 grad did just that. After earning a 

degree in art education and art history and a 

master’s degree in gifted and talented education 

from Northern Kentucky University, Iles was hired 

by Pres. 

“I was excited about coming back with techniques 

and ideas I could share,” said Iles, 27, who teaches 

studio art and digital photography. Now, some of Iles’ 

students tell her they want to be art teachers someday. 

Iles, who is an oil painter and photographer, fondly 

recalls her years as a Pres student and member of a 

basketball team that played in the state tournament 

three times. 

“Pres was very homey and comfortable,” said Iles. At the 

same time, its leadership program prepared her for the 

more sophisticated challenges of life after high school. 

“There is no way I could have done some of the things in 

college—seeking financial aid and jobs—without Pres.” 

The school gave her the confidence to seek out the 

Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball coach 

and ask for a tryout. She didn’t make the college team, but 

the coach gave her a job and allowed her to be a practice 

player. “I got a scholarship and I would never have had that 

job—or the courage to ask—if I had not gone to Pres.”

science cAreer 

Field hockey captain Erin Asher, 17, has 

racked up more than a dozen awards and 

trophies in her four years as a star player for 

Pres. While field hockey put the senior in the 

spotlight as an all-state forward and nominee 

for Miss Field Hockey of Kentucky, it is 

science that attracts Erin’s attention. 

Three years of classes, including AP Biology, 

with science teacher Jamie Beach has 

stimulated Erin’s interest in a medical degree. 

When she looks into her future, Erin, who 

has a 3.8 grade point average, envisions herself 

as a medical resident. As part of the school’s 

career exploration program, she shadowed 

an architect, dentist and dermatologist. The 

experience confirmed her preference for 

studying medicine. 

At Pres, she finds guidance in achieving that 

dream. “Teachers are willing to go beyond 

to help you,” she said. “It is a place where 

students are encouraged to respect others and 

to be confident in their own opinions.”

excels in engineering 

“Pres opened my eyes to the fact that women can succeed as 

much as men. We can have our careers and our families. We 

don’t have to sacrifice one,” said Joleen Phillips Graves (Class 

of 2001). 

“It was always about leadership and taking control of your life 

and making it what you want it to be—don’t let someone tell 

you that you can’t.” 

Graves, 27, who followed sister, Candice, to Pres, was an 

all-state basketball player who also played as a starter on the 

University of Louisville team. 

Now an electrical engineer with a master’s degree in business, Graves works as a project 

controls analyst for American Electric Power. Looking back at her years at Pres, Graves 

remembers gravitating toward math and being encouraged by teachers and counselors to pursue 

that interest. 

“I also appreciated Pres’s history and tradition. It felt the most like home. It didn’t always feel 

like school.” 

Graves said Pres nurtured her confidence. “I am secure in the person that I am.”

student leAder dreAms of 

foundAtion for teens 

Nakayla Little likes charting her own course. 

“Being a leader means not following the crowd,” 

said the 16-year-old junior. 

Nakayla, who is on the student-faculty 

advisory board, said Pres encourages her 

to follow her path further than she ever 

thought possible. 

In history class recently, she drew inspiration 

from aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. Her 

bravery made Nakayla think: “What am 

I going to do before I die? I want to be 

known for doing something—something 

that hasn’t been done before, something 

great with people.” 

That idea led the A-student to imagine 

creating a foundation that would foster 

teenagers who need mentors. Before forming 

the foundation, Nakayla said, she must first 

become a success herself. Although she 

hasn’t decided on her college career path, 

she is fascinated by psychiatry and drawn to 

occupational therapy. 

When she isn’t busy with academics and 

serving on the Youth Archdiocese Board, 

Nakayla uses her leadership skills for fun. She 

coaches and choreographs dances for the Pres 

step-dance team.

Apple 

At Christmas time, Candice Phillips (Class 

of ’98) was smack-dab in the New York hustle 

and bustle as a product manager for Macy’s. 

Phillips, 30, an exemplary student and 

four-year star of Presentation’s track team, 

was president of her junior and senior class. 

She earned a degree in design and product 

development at the University of Cincinnati 

and then landed a job with Macy’s. In the 

past seven years, she has been promoted three 

times. She is now product manager of silver 

jewelry for the retail giant. 

Her success in a competitive job market is 

partly due to Pres, she said. “It was about 

character building and instilling strong values.” 

Principal Barbara Wine (Class of ’67) and 

teachers helped her “develop my hard-work 

ethic and professionalism,” she said. “I came 

to New York at age 23 and people kept saying 

‘you are so prepared.’” 

From her office in Manhattan, Phillips sends 

some encouraging words to Pres students: 

“Take advantage of all that Pres has to offer 

and really, really make the most of your time.“

The Catherine Spalding Society was 

established by the Board of Trustees 

in 1990. The mission of the society 

was to honor and recognize those 

who support Presentation Academy

sIsTER MARY RANsOM BURKE, sCN sChOLARshIP 

The Sister Mary Ransom Burke, SCN Scholarship was established by a member of the Pres family to memorialize this remarkable 

Pres alumna, former Dean of Spalding University and member of Presentation Academy’s Alumnae Hall of Fame. Annually, this $500 

scholarship is awarded to a Pres student who best reflects Sister Mary Ransom Burke’s strong character, personal responsibility and 

dedication to academics. 

sIsTER MIRIAM CORCORAN, sCN sChOLARshIP 

The Sister Miriam Corcoran, SCN Scholarship was established in May 2000 by members of the Class of 1963 and other alumnae in 

honor of Sr. Miriam’s dedication to Presentation. This scholarship honors Sr. Miriam, known to many as Sr. Mary Andrea, by providing 

tuition assistance to a sophomore student with outstanding written communication skills and strong academic performance. 

COLLEEN DANNAhER MEMORIAL sChOLARshIP 

The Colleen Dannaher Memorial Scholarship was established by the Dannaher family after Colleen’s death in the spring of 1996. A 

$500 award is made each year to a member of the junior class who demonstrates the qualities Colleen possessed: enthusiastic leadership and 

service to the Presentation community. 

ThE WILLIAM J. & ANITA K. DODD MEMORIAL sChOLARshIP 

The William J. and Anita K. Dodd Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by Mary Kay and Richard Schmeing and May Kay’s 

sister, Jeanne Dodd, to honor the memory of their parents. Incoming freshmen with demonstrated financial need and strong academics may 

apply for this scholarship. Preference is given to those from the Latino community. 

GRENOUGh FAMILY sChOLARshIP 

The Grenough Family Scholarship, established in 1998, provides assistance to students who want to attend Presentation Academy but, 

because of demonstrated need, cannot afford to do so without financial assistance. 

BOBBIE hOUsEhOLDER MEMORIAL sChOLARshIP 

The Bobbie Householder Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by faculty member Gary Householder in memory of his mother 

who was a civic leader and dedicated volunteer in her hometown of Blount County, TN. This scholarship is awarded to sophomores, juniors 

and seniors who meet specific requirements including community service, leadership and academic performance. 

MALONEY sChOLARshIP 

The Maloney Scholarship, established by the children of Imelda Shea Maloney, 1907, provides tuition assistance to active Catholic 

students with an economic need, especially those who are members of large families. 

MONICA KAUFMAN PEARsON 1965 sChOLARshIP 

The Monica Kaufman Pearson ‘65 Scholarship was established in 2005 by Ms. Pearson as a way to go give back to the next generation of 

Pres girls. This scholarship provides tuition assistance to African-American young women interested in attending Presentation Academy. 

FRANNIE sMITh FINE ARTs sChOLARshIP 

The Frannie Smith Fine Arts Scholarship was established in 1993 by Frank and Sharon Smith in memory of their daughter, Frannie. The 

scholarship provides a $500 award each year to a member of the junior class who demonstrates talent, creativity, leadership and dedication 

to the arts. 

PREsENTATION ACADEMY TRUsTEE sChOLARshIP 

The Presentation Academy Trustee Scholarship is offered to entering freshmen who scored a 95% or higher on the High School Entrance 

Exam. This four-year scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $2,000 per year. 

JULIA vIssING 2001 MEMORIAL sChOLARshIP 

The Julia Vissing ‘01 Memorial Scholarship was established by William and Vicki Vissing after Julia’s death in 2002. Scholarship funds are 

raised through private gifts as well as proceeds from an annual golf scramble and fishing tournament. Incoming freshmen in need of tuition 

assistance are eligible to apply for this scholarship. 

sUsAN MUELLER WIsE 1961 MEMORIAL sChOLARshIP 

The Susan Mueller Wise ‘61 Memorial Scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in December 2006 to celebrate her friend’s 

life. This $1,000 scholarship is offered each year to a graduating Pres senior accepted to study at the University of Louisville. Preference is 

given to members of the golf team. 

FLAGET ALUMNI AssOCIATION sChOLARshIP 

The Flaget Alumni Association Scholarship, an annual scholarship, is sponsored by the Alumni of Flaget High School. It is awarded to 

any student who resides in the Metro Louisville Area, has a strong desire to obtain a Catholic secondary education and shows evidence 

of financial need. Applicants must display the virtues of initiative, discipline, and a positive spirit while exhibiting the capacity to meet 

academic requirements.
