Why not? Griffins were sighted in Brentford, west London, in 1984.

What is quite strange, though, is that Brentford is obsessed with

griffins. Brentford FC’s football stadium is called Griffin Park. There is

a pub called The Griffin. Griffin symbology is situated around the town.

But, in 1984, several people did report seeing a REAL griffin in Brentford. I

t was a strange flying “thing” decribed as a winged dog or large

bir- like creature. It seemed to match the description of the classical

griffin, a flying lion with an eagle’s head.King Charles II gave his

mistress Nell Gwyn, a resident of Brentford, a griffin as a gift. One day

the unfortunate creature fell into the River Brent and was swept

away into the Thames. The griffin, assumed drowned, was actually found

alive on the banks of Brentford Eyot, where it continued to live

undisturbed. Maybe it was the griffin that was seen in 1984, still alive

after all these years. What is strange about the photo of the Beast

of Hackney Marshes in north east London is that it looks like

a grizzly bear and, back in the 1990s, there was an episode of

the TV series The Detectives called “The Beast of Hackney

Marshes” in which a grizzly bear escapes onto Hackney Marshes.

There is actually some prior history to this. Here’s another report of

strange sightings on Hackney Marshes dating back to the ‘80’s :-
