Is Making Heavy Water Painful? is an engaging account of the engineering and technical
challenges of starting-up the Canadian General Electric Heavy Water Plant in Port Hawkesbury,
Nova Scotia in the 1970’s. The narrative is lightened with humor and numerous personal
anecdotes that give the reader a sense of what life was like in southern Cape Breton at that time.
The success of the plant was a tribute to the ingenuity and persistence of both the “come-fromaways”
and local Cape Bretoners who worked at the plant and brought it into full production.This
story reflects the personal experiences of the author, Stan Davies, who served as part of the
management team at this heavy water plant from 1968 to 1975. He fondly remembers the
challenges of his work in this “once in a lifetime" experience.
