Out and about…
MATT BLACK BARN
ART TRIP
In January, a group of 15 pupils from Year 11 (U5)
visited Matt Black Barn in West Sussex, as part
of their GCSE assessed coursework. An educational
organisation set up by the sculptors Andrew
Sabin and Laura Ford, its purpose is to foster
excitement and engagement with every aspect
of contemporary sculpture making. The two
professional sculptors, each with over 40 years
of continual activity behind them, have spent many
years teaching at London Art Schools and have
enormous enthusiasm for communicating their
sense of the importance of sculpture as a tool
for understanding the world.
Miss Little described the visit as, “The best
experience in the history of my art trips.” She added,
“The couple live here, too. I can imagine their home
is incredible – what a space to own! If I ever win
the lottery, I will be purchasing a giant poodle
from Ford!”
Gimena (Year 11/U5) writes, “Seeing the process
of how every sculpture was made really puts into
perspective the amount of time and effort put into
every single one of them. In every corner you’d find
something new and interesting – there is no doubt
that coming back a second time would be just as
interesting as seeing it for the first time.”
