Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Taco Caballito on the corner of Beach Avenue and Decatur
Street. They’ve reopened following some extensive renovations
throughout much of the building and we were very excited to stop in to
see the updates!
Uncle Bill’s
The vibe: There’s something much warmer about the interior of the
dining room. They have a beautiful new booth set up, velvet green chairs
at their low-top tables, new signage, faux brick panels lining the walls
along with a new ceiling, wooden paneling behind the bar and fabulous
light fixtures both hanging and mounted throughout the room. They put
a lot of work into each detail to bring a new vibe to the long-standing
building. Very chic and fun — something different for Cape May and
we’re excited about it, too!
The drinks: You can’t go to Taco Caballito without getting one
of their signature margaritas... at least we can’t. We sipped a Blood
Orange, Prickly Pear, Surfs Up plus a classic margarita with plenty of
salt! They were delicious and the perfect way to wrap up a long day of
drinking — we had hit Exit Zero Ferry Station, Nauti Spirits and Cape
May Brew Co. earlier that day!
The food: Definitely our favorite part of the night. We had been
craving basically everything on the menu for quite some time, but
started with Nachos Grande, Mexican Street Fries and Mexico City
Guacamole. Those did not last long AT ALL but held us over very well
until our dinner came out. We dove right into Americano tacos with
beef, another order with chicken, short rib bahn mi, crispy fish tacos,
cheesesteak birria tacos, a Mexican Street bowl and a taco sampler. Not
even a little room for dessert, but wow, were we happy!
The takeaway: Taco Caballito never disappoints — it’s a great spot
Mon-Fri 7am-2pm | Sat-Sun 6:30am-2pm
for large groups, a date night, or if you want to grab a few drinks at the
bar. They’re open Thu-Sun from 12-10pm and Mon from 12-9pm. It
really must be good, because we’re ordering lunch from Taco Caballito

before hopping on the ferry and shop all the Exit Zero

Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw
bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus
outside tables for some great people-watching!
As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get
Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat
pies have been receiving rave reviews.
Good food, good beer and great times! Stop in for
happy hour to enjoy food and drink specials along

It was a typical spring afternoon at the
Thanu homestead. Then bedlam. Alarm
calls, frenzied wings. One particular
pairing caught my eye. A male cardinal
cutting cookie-cutter figures around the
ornamental plum, a pursuing hawk following
every turn as fast as a mirror can mimic. This
time the cardinal won, gaining the safety of
the tree — both he and the hawk settled in
to see how the second round might play out.
True, the hawk could no longer rely upon
surprise, but the cardinal was a long way from
safety.
As I watched the stalemate unfold, I wondered
how many times this drama played out
this winter. Both birds are partners of predation.
Some people are vexed by hawks killing
birds at their feeder. Me? I’m fascinated
by this inexorable dance between predator
and prey, a dance that moves both partners
to higher levels of perfection. The hawk by
always needing to refine its technique, and the
birds at my feeder by having diseased members
of the flock culled before their infirmity

In today’s matchup, it was the cardinal
who called the card, flying first, heading
straight for me. The hawk, frustrated and still
hungry, went the other way in search of other
prey. Tomorrow, these same two birds may
meet again. For now, it was a cardinal one,
Sharp-shinned zero.

depart, heading for the boreal forest where
it will vie for a mate to keep its genetic winning
streak alive. The cardinal as a resident
species was already on territory, its greatest
challenge, keeping other male cardinals outside
of its boundaries and away from its mate.
Life is never without challenges if you are a
wild bird. Next fall, if the Sharp-shinned and
cardinal meet those challenges there may be a
rematch. But the cardinal will have to defend
its territory from rival males and the Sharpshinned
will need to survive to risk filled
migrations. Successful birds tend to return to
the same winter territory. The smart money
says both birds will win to see another season
— the tie I just witnessed underscores this
supposition. The stakes are high and it’s not
just life and death, it’s your bid for immortality
through the young you sire.
So even if the hawk ultimately wins the
contest, the male cardinal still plays a winning
hand. His offspring will be playing it for
him just as it was his genetic superiority that
dealt them a winning hand in the first place.

Are you a fan of stories where the
least likely of heroes battle the biggest
villains? If so, check out this
David-versus-Goliath flick (and I
mean microscopic Goliath). In Ant-
Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Paul Rudd
reprises his role as Scott Lang (aka Ant-Man).
He teams with Hope Van Dyne/Wasp (played
by Evangeline Lilly) to fight one of the darkest
and most powerful foes in the Marvel
Universe: Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan
Majors). Comic book lovers have been waiting
a long time to see this larger-than-life enemy
on the big screen — and this movie delivers.
The film, which received mixed reviews
from critics and audiences, is being released
for in-home viewing in just a few days —
although it may not stream free.
Ant-Man’s power is either shrinking
or enlarging in size. The character has been
around in comic books for over 60 years. His
movie debut was in 2015 with Rudd in the lead
role. The second installment of the series was
2018. Lang is a former thief who became a
reluctant superhero and fought alongside the
Avengers. Van Dyne (aka The Wasp) is his
girlfriend.
This installment adds a new character,
Lang’s daughter Cassie (Katherine Newton)
and brings back Van Dyne’s parents played by
Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas. This
unforgettable and dangerous micro-journey
has macro proportions. It starts when a scientific
project by Cassie accidentally transports
many characters to a subcellular world known
as the Quantum Realm. Here, they receive
help from many people such as Lord Krylar
(Bill Murray), and Quaz (William Jackson
Harper). They must also battle Kang, a villain
who can manipulate time. Pretty “Goliath”
for a micro-villain, huh? An interesting thing
about this movie is a superhero with weaker
abilities faces this mighty Marvel menace.
How will Ant-Man stand up to Kang?
No matter what we’ve accomplished in
the past, we can achieve more. Even though
Ant-Man accomplished a lot after turning his
life around and joining the Avengers to face
many imposing foes, he still has a lot learn as
both a parent and hero. “If there’s one thing
life has taught me, it’s that there’s always
room to grow,” he says. Another great lesson
is that teamwork or help from a loved one can

Let the weather put a little spring in
your step — go for a run. Exercise
goals can be confusing — should I
be doing 150 minutes a week? 300?
Should I aim for 10,000 steps a day, or
is 6,000 enough? Am I wasting my time if I’m
only a “weekend warrior?” Recent research
clears up some of the confusion — any exercise
is better than no exercise. Just 11 minutes
a day may be enough to lower your risk of
heart disease. That’s only half of the previous
“low end” recommendation, but it may be
enough to reduce 10 percent of early deaths.
Go for a short run to get started. Maybe
you can run for one minute, and walk for 10.
Do a little bit, then a little more. You may feel
an endorphin boost immediately, and over
time, you should feel benefits like better sleep
and digestion, and lower levels of depression.
Running has been proven to be better than
medication for some ailments, but like all prescriptions,
there are side effects which can’t be
ignored. Running stresses your joints, especially
your knees. You may strain a muscle or

suffer heel pain or shin splints. You’ll need to
prepare for lesser ailments, like blisters, insect
bites and sunburn. Talk to a doctor about mitigating
any problems — things like bursitis
can be alleviated with extensive stretching,
for example, and other aches can be helped
with supplemental exercises or better sneakers.
Benefits like improved bone density
and stronger core and hip muscles may help
reduce other injuries as you age.
Don’t compare yourself to other runners.
You can’t run anyone else’s race. Drink water,
warm up, stretch, and move the way your body
allows. Search online for popular running
routes, but don’t be afraid to cut them in half
— or in eighths — to meet your needs. Cape
May Running Company (capemayrunning.
co) has routes mapped out in a variety of
lengths, and greatruns.com describes some
beautiful local routes to try. Wear quality
sneakers, and replace them every 400 miles
OR when they wear out. Sneakers degrade
over time, so even that little-used pair you
left in a closet from last summer may need to
be replaced. Choose music to stay motivated,
find an interesting podcast or bring a friend to
chat. Wear sunscreen.
If you’d like to run, or walk, with a crowd,
join “Run Wild for the Cape May County Zoo”
on April 23. This is a 5k run and mile walk,
through the zoo in the early morning. Visit
their Facebook page for details. On May 20,
get inspiration by cheering the runners in the
Great Cape May Footrace.

six-foot-three and on the thin side, but by no
means skinny. I just lol’d her. We haven’t set
another date yet because of her schedule but
the more I think about it, the more I feel her

COOPER is a sweet and lovable boy who lived
with a family for two years, but they can no
longer take care of him. He is a 115-pound boy,
and his leash skills are improving daily, but
he loves to explore his surroundings. Cooper
would be better suited for a family with older
children as he tends to be protective of his
family.
KANAN is a friendly two-year-old bulldog
whose family could no longer care for him. He
loves to be with people and can sometimes get
a little over excited. An experienced large dog
owner would be best. Kanan is easy to harness
and walks well on his leash. This lovable boy
is crate trained and does well with other dogs,
cats and children.
MAEVE is a very special girl who needs a
loving home. She came to the shelter with
many serious wounds, indicating she was a
bait dog. Maeve is a brave, resilient dog who
craves human attention and loves to stay close
by. She would be a loving companion for any
family willing to open their hearts and give her
a second chance at a good life.

best in a home with no dogs or children. If

GUCCI has a young face that will make your
heart melt. She is a 10-month-old who came
to the shelter from a hoarder house. Gucci was
extremely emaciated and dirty. The shelter
cleaned her up and she is adjusting to trusting
people. Gucci would do well in a quiet home
at first, but with no other dogs or children. If
interested, contact the shelter.
GRETA came to the shelter from a hoarder
house. This 10-month-old girl was kept in a
cage in the basement. She is one of the more
positive and happy cats from the home, but
don’t pick her up. She will need to be slowly
introduced to being picked up with lots of
patience and practice. Greta deserves a loving
home — please contact the shelter.
