<strong>PwC</strong> x-<strong>Act</strong> <strong>Competition</strong><br />

<strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Louis</strong> University participated in the <strong>PwC</strong> xACT (xTREME <strong>Accounting</strong>) campus competition<br />

in 2009 and 2010. The xTREME <strong>Accounting</strong> campus competition features real world decision<br />

making, communication and presentation, and team collaboration. Mr. Neil Jansen served as the SLU<br />

campus coordinator. 15 and 11 SLU teams took part in the xACT competition in 2009 and 2010,<br />

respectively. The judges from <strong>PwC</strong> were impressed with the high level of participation and enthusiasm<br />

of SLU students. The winning team on SLU campus in 2009 is David Armbrust, John Kinsella, John<br />

Thomas, Joanna Joye, and Justin Schlueter, with Dr. John Keithley as the faculty advisor. The winning<br />

team on SLU campus in 2010 is Jack Brentin, Amy Collmeyer, Nicole Pour, Steve Shin, and Natalie<br />

Taylor, with Ms. Debbie Barbeau as the faculty mentor.<br />

<strong>Accounting</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong><br />

<strong>Program</strong><br />

The <strong>Accounting</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> program allows eligible<br />

students to be accepted to <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Louis</strong> University’s<br />

Integrated <strong>Accounting</strong> <strong>Program</strong> during<br />

their junior year. This program is available only<br />

to entering freshmen students whose high school<br />

scholastic achievement and admission test scores<br />

demonstrate superior academic success. <strong>Accounting</strong><br />

<strong>Scholars</strong> who complete the program requirements<br />

are guaranteed a seat in <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Louis</strong> University’s<br />

Integrated <strong>Accounting</strong> <strong>Program</strong> and will<br />

be given priority consideration for graduate level<br />

scholarships. During 2010, four new students<br />

• On November 18, 2010, the accounting<br />

department held a Town Hall meeting for<br />

accounting majors to provide information and<br />

answer questions about the CPA exam. Ms. Susanne<br />

Doran from Becker Review attended the<br />

meeting.<br />

• On September 9, 2010, the accounting<br />

department hosted a breakfast reception to welcome<br />

new and returning MACC and Integrated<br />

<strong>Accounting</strong> students in the Boeing Lounge. Besides<br />

the students, most accounting faculty members<br />

and two advisory board members, Mr. Tom<br />

Hilton and Mr. Mike Sindelar, also attended the<br />

reception. The students enjoyed the interaction<br />

with the faculty and the board members.<br />

• On March 25, 2010, the accounting<br />

department held a Town Hall Meeting for<br />

accounting seniors and MACC/Integrated <strong>Accounting</strong><br />

students. The purpose of the meeting<br />

was to acquaint the students with employment<br />

opportunities with the IRS and specifically, openings<br />

for several Co-Op students to be trained as<br />

Appeals Officers through the IRS Student Career<br />

Experience <strong>Program</strong>. With this program, if the<br />

co-op student does well he will be converted to a<br />

full-time Appeals Officer upon graduation. The<br />

students will be eligible for benefits from their<br />

start date and work closely with their manager.<br />

• On October 15, 2009, Dr. Ananth<br />

Seetharaman, Dr. Jack Kissinger, and Dr. Yan Sun<br />

had a breakfast meeting with non-SLU MACC<br />

students in Bannister House.<br />

• On September 16, 2009, the accounting<br />

department held its annual Town Hall Meeting<br />

and Welcome Reception for the MACC and<br />

Integrated <strong>Accounting</strong> <strong>Program</strong> students. The<br />

<strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Louis</strong> University. In their presentations, the<br />

speakers discussed the current state and outlook<br />

of hiring at big accounting firms, skills expected<br />

for graduates, portability of an accounting degree,<br />

and the importance of communication skills,<br />

among other things. The meeting concluded with<br />

an open question session for all four speakers.
