Description
Francis of Assisi, also known as Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone, was an Italian saint and the
founder of the Franciscan religious order. He was born in Assisi, in the duchy of Spoleto, in
1181/82 and died there on October 3, 1226. He was canonised on July 16, 1228. He was a soldier
and a prisoner of war before becoming a Christian in his early 20s. He was born into a wealthy
family. He started living in poverty and piety after selling his land and giving the money from the
sale to the church. His followers soon grew, and he sent them out to preach across Europe. In
1209, Pope Innocent III approved the formation of the Franciscan order. The importance of
following Jesus' example was emphasised in the Rule of St. Francis. Francis was a mystic in many
respects and saw all of nature as a mirror.
