WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM 

FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S SKY BET LEAGUE ONE 

FIXTURE AGAINST SHREWSBURY TOWN. 

A warm welcome also to Steve 

Cotterill, his staff and players, 

and to those who have travelled 

up from Shropshire. 

With three successive home 

games before the trip to Bristol 

Rovers next month, we find 

ourselves in a great position 

to control our own destiny and 

secure a place in the play-offs. 

I am writing these notes shortly 

after our draw at Burton Albion, 

which in all honesty should have 

been a victory. 

After showing great resilience 

at Oxford United to claim the 

win, I thought we would go on to 

repeat that after we took another 

early lead. 

In my opinion it was our best 

performance since Wembley and 

we were a little disappointed not 

to come back with the win. 

They were always going to have 

one or two moments. James 

Trafford made an excellent save 

and was then unlucky with the 

goal. 

But we had enough chances to 

win two or three games and it 

one of those nights when we just 

couldn’t quite get that goal. We 

deserved it, we didn’t get it, but 

it’s probably a decent point and 

there was lots to like about what 

we did. 

If we play like that for these 

next four games, we’ll have no 

problems. We’re still in the top 

six, which is all-important. We still 

have that extra game. 

It’s down to us and in our hands, 

so we have to keep going and 

do the business. 

We’ve had to do the hard yards 

since Wembley. We’ve had three 

away games. We’re unbeaten in 

all of those and won two of them. 

But each remaining game, 

including today’s against 

Shrewsbury Town, will pose 

challenges that we must be ready 

for. Nothing will be taken for 

granted as we look to get those 

points on the board. We have 

to - and will - keep working hard. 

Resilience will be a key factor as 

much as anything else. 

A team managed by Steve will 

always be a difficult opponent 

and though today’s visitors have 

suffered some indifferent results 

of late, they are a good team and 

will be working hard to frustrate 

us on our own patch. We will 

need to be patient, dig in deep 

and take our chances when they 

come. 

A win today will see us 

strengthen our prospects of that 

top-six finish and then we have 

the opportunity to get some of 

the other boys we have been 

missing through injury back. 

Your support, home and away, 

has been magnifient and the 

atmosphere you create has been 

amazing. You all still have an 

important role to play, especially 

with these three quickfire home 

games. 

A noisy and passionate University 

of Bolton Stadium can be a 

daunting prospect for visiting 

teams, so please keep up the 

excellent support and hopefully 

we can pack it out. 

It was pleasing to hear about 

season ticket sales for next 

season. That we have already 

sold more than this season’s 

total is quite astonishing, 

especially given the tough 

economic climate we are all 

experiencing. 

But since the first day I walked 

into this wonderful club as the 

manager of Bolton Wanderers, I 

have always felt that you are fully 

invested in the journey Sharon 

and the Board are taking this 

club on and the progress we are 

collectively making.

THE BOARDROOM 

NEIL HART 

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM FOR 

OUR FIRST OF THREE HOME GAMES IN JUST EIGHT DAYS. 

The week ahead is indicative of 

what an incredibly busy time it’s 

recently been for the Wanderers. 

Amongst the raft of League 

fixtures, so many of us also took 

that memorable trip to Wembley 

at the start of this month for what 

proved to be a triumphant high 

for the club as Ian and his players 

secured the club’s first cup win in 

34 years. 

I want to take the opportunity to 

thank the tens of thousands of 

you who journeyed to the national 

stadium to back the team and be 

part of that incredible day. And 

your outstanding support has 

continued into the weeks since, 

with 14,358 already signed up for 

season tickets for the 2023/34 

campaign. 

This number exceeded all our 

expectations – there are now 

already more season ticket holders 

for the 2023/24 season by mid- 

April than there are for the current 

season as a whole! It shows how 

far forward we continue to move as 

a club and the fantastic buzz there 

is about the place. 

We know that great support will 

continue as Ian and his team fight 

for their play-off spot and we 

hope to see you turn out in your 

numbers for both the Accrington 

and the Fleetwood fixtures. The 

noise and the energy that comes 

from the stands here at the stadium 

when they are filled with fans is 

powerful and really does make the 

difference. 

Aside from the football, we 

recently published our 2021/22 

Accounts and were pleased to 

report increased revenues and 

shareholder investment. Our 

objective was to compete at the 

top end of League One this season 

and through diligent and careful 

financial decision making, we 

have achieved that, and we look 

ahead with confidence to what the 

club can continue to accomplish 

together. 

We have also been recently 

nominated for two EFL Awards in 

the Diversity and Fan Engagement 

categories. 

The Diversity nomination is for 

the fantastic Unity Festival – an 

event we are honoured to host 

here at Bolton Wanderers. For the 

initiative to be held up as a beacon 

of inclusivity is well deserved 

and I extend our congratulations 

to Bolton Wanderers in the 

Community who play such an 

integral role in making it happen 

every year. 

Our nomination in the Fan 

Engagement category covers the 

Memorandum of Understanding 

now in place with the Bolton 

Wanderers Supporters’ Trust, the 

Pick Our Kits survey and the digital 

Supporter Survey 2023, amongst 

other initiatives. We place great 

value on our relationship with 

our supporters, and open and 

honest communication with the 

club’s fanbase is at the very top 

of our agenda. To see this work 

recognised is something we are 

also very proud of. 

The future of the matchday bus 

service is a good example of 

where open and honest dialogue 

with supporters has helped 

us going forward. Following 

consultation and feedback, I can 

confirm we will continue to provide 

matchday buses, that we remain 

in discussions with Tyrers and we 

hope to bring this to a conclusion 

in the coming weeks. We will offer 

a bus service that meets the needs 

of those who need it most and that 

works economically for all parties. 

With the strength on the pitch, 

the communication lines we now 

have in place between club and 

supporters and the incredible 

backing already in place for the 

coming season, the future looks 

bright for Bolton Wanderers. 

It feels, without doubt, that this 

proud, historical club is back on the 

map and once again showing what 

it is capable of.

EVERY SEASON HAS A PIVOTAL MOMENT AND THE REAL RELEVANCE 

MAY NOT BE DETERMINED UNTIL THE FINAL OUTCOME. 

But right now, Wanderers’ 

fightback at Sheffield Wednesday 

feels pretty important. 

And it certainly was for one player 

in particular as Josh Sheehan 

showed beyond doubt he’s back in 

business. 

“It’s what I’d been waiting for really, 

to get an opportunity and get an 

opportunity and do well,” said 

Sheehan, who got the nod to start 

at Hillsborough just over a month 

ago and hasn’t looked back since. 

“You can get an opportunity and 

not take it and I felt at Sheffield 

Wednesday maybe I did. 

“That was the first game I played in 

a deeper role than I had in the few 

months prior to that. I just felt in 

the Sheffield Wednesday game as 

a team we clicked and played the 

way we wanted to. 

“We hadn’t been up to that 

standard before that but since then 

I feel like as a team – especially 

as everybody saw in the final – 

we really hit the ground running 

and we’ve got to keep doing that 

to the end of the season and be 

confident and be ourselves and 

know what we can do and go and 

show it.” 

After conceding early to a 

Wednesday side that at the time 

was on a club record unbeaten 

run and flying high at the top of 

League One, Wanderers could 

have faltered further on the back 

of a sticky sequence of one win 

and three defeats in five games 

wrapped around the semi-final win 

at Accrington Stanley that took 

them to the final of the Papa Johns 

Trophy. 

Instead, they rallied and left South 

Yorkshire with a deserved point 

thanks to Victor Adeboyejo’s 

equaliser which kick-started a fivematch 

unbeaten league run and an 

on-going place in the top six. 

Sheehan more than played his part 

with a classy midfield display and, 

having felt his way back to full form 

and fitness after the best part of 

a year out of League One action 

following a nasty knee injury, it was 

a big 90 minutes for the Welshman. 

“I don’t know many players in 

the world that have come back 

straight away and in the first game 

back or first training session back 

and it’s like you’ve never been 

away,” admitted Sheehan, whose 

previous contributions – including 

a big winner against Port Vale in 

February – had come in shorter 

bursts. 

“It just takes time. You feel fine, 

it’s just confidence and belief

in yourself and I felt maybe that 

Sheffield Wednesday game was 

the one when I thought I’m fully 

back, fully confident and aware of 

my body and what I could do. 

“When you’re confident you seem 

to play a totally different game. 

You’re more relaxed and play the 

game you naturally want to do. 

“You want to show people how 

good you can be and what you 

can do. I still feel like I can do more 

again, so I’m looking forward to 

going on. It’s really nice to play 

football and do what I do.” 

Sheehan hadn’t played at all for 

nine months after suffering knee 

ligament damage in November, 

2021 and admits it had been a 

tough road back. 

“When you’re out for a long 

time there’s nothing worse than 

watching,” said the 28-year-old 

play-maker. 

“Speaking to some of the injured 

boys now who are out for a long 

time, you’ve got to keep in touch 

with them and make sure they 

keep their heads up, because 

when you’re watching from the 

side and know you can’t impact it 

at all it’s mentally tough. 

“Fortunately, we’ve got a strong 

squad, the gaffer keeps in touch 

with you, asking how you are, 

and I’ve got a strong family 

around me who helped 

me get through it.” 

TO DO THAT WITH THAT BIG OF A CROWD 

AND THE STAGE IT WAS ON, IT COULDN’T 

HAVE GONE ANY BETTER.

Sheehan’s reward for persistence 

and peaking again at Sheffield 

Wednesday was a place in 

Wanderers’ starting line-up at 

Wembley for the Papa Johns 

Trophy final. 

And with the football gods smiling 

on him again, he was also able 

to enjoy a fitting first Wembley 

triumph at the fourth attempt, 

having twice lost in play-off finals 

and to Tottenham Hotspur as a 

Newport County player. 

“It was a bit surreal really. Going 

back a year I was probably just 

starting to walk again and then 

a year later I’m at Wembley and 

we’re winning,” added Sheehan, 

who barely out a foot wrong in 

helping Wanderers cruise to a 4-0 

victory over Plymouth Argyle 

to secure the Whites’ first 

knock-out trophy in 34 

years. 

“It can change that 

quickly and you’ve 

got to take your 

opportunity. It was 

a hell of a day. 

The game was 

perfect. To 

do that with 

that big of 

a crowd and the stage it was on, it 

couldn’t have gone any better. 

“I’d played there three times and 

lost every one. So to finally win 

there and to win for this club, with 

how big it is and what it’s been 

through, was even more special.” 

Sheehan’s value to the cause 

was further underlined as he then 

helped Wanderers picked up 

seven points from three games 

following Wembley before he 

was given a breather and named 

among the substitutes at Burton 

Albion on Tuesday night. 

With Ian Evatt’s re-shuffled side 

picking up a further valuable point 

from a 1-1 draw, the stage is now 

set for Wanderers to try and push 

on and secure the play-off place 

which will keep their promotion 

hopes alive. 

It’s still a demanding task but a 

three-game home run, starting with 

today’s visit of Shrewsbury Town, 

gives the Whites every chance. 

And Sheehan is confident 

Wanderers have what it takes if 

they can repeat their ‘A’ game often 

enough to meet the season-long 

target. 

“If we don’t get in the play-offs 

then I don’t think as a club, as a 

team, the management – that’s 

not what we’re about. That’s what 

we’ve wanted since the start of the 

season,” he said. 

“The Papa Johns Trophy was a 

good day out and a great thing 

for the club but the main thing has 

always been the league and that’s 

the full focus for the last couple of 

weeks of the season. 

“If we can believe in ourselves, be 

confident and know how good we 

can be, then I’m sure we’ll be all 

right. But we’ve got to show that 

when it’s tough in games and when 

we’re under the cosh. That’s when 

we’ve got to dig in and show our 

personality and show our strength 

as a team. 

“Our home form all season has 

been good and that’s what we’ve 

got to continue this week. We’ve 

got to make sure we win our home 

games. It’s still in our hands and 

we’ve got to do everything we can. 

“We want to make it a special 

season. With this team we feel like 

we’ve got an opportunity to do 

that. We just want to keep doing 

what we can and hopefully that’s 

enough and we can get to where 

we want to get to.”

One hundred years ago the 

Wanderers had reached their sixth 

FA Cup Semi-final, where they 

would face fellow First Division 

side and Cup favourites, Sheffield 

United at Old Trafford, with a prize 

of playing at the new Wembley 

Park Stadium for the winners. 

In the two weeks following the 

defeat of Charlton in the previous 

round the Wanderers had played 

two League games, losing 2-1 to 

Burnley at Turf Moor and defeating 

Newcastle United at Burnden Park 

by a single goal. 

The game against the Blades 

attracted incredible interest, 

Old Trafford, opened in 1909, 

witnessed a crowd it hadn’t seen 

before of 72,000 with an estimated 

20,000 locked out. Even those 

inside the ground struggled to 

see the action with the crowd 

encroaching the touchline which 

resulted in several delays to the 

game in what was to be a mirror 

image of what was to come in the 

final itself. 

It was full blooded encounter with 

both teams being handicapped 

with injuries as the game wore on 

and, in general, both defences 

were on top. 

The one decisive moment in the 

game came within two minutes 

of the second half commencing. 

Ted Vizard ran down the left and 

centred to John Smith whose shot 

fell for David Jack to scoop the ball 

over the Blades ‘keeper and into 

the net. 

The Trotters were going to 

Wembley and had reached 

the final of the greatest cup 

competition in the World for the 

third time where they hoped to 

secure a first success having lost 

to Notts County in 1894 and to 

Manchester City in 1904. 

On their return to Bolton the team 

were greeted by thousands which 

came as a great surprise. They 

toured the streets in a motor coach 

ending in front of the Pack Horse 

Hotel where they thanked the 

crowd. 

West Ham United won the battle 

of the Second Division sides in the 

other semi-final with a 5-2 success 

against Derby County to reach 

their first FA Cup final. 

Whilst the final, to be played 

on 28th April, was now at the 

forefront of everybody’s mind 

the Wanderers had nine League 

games to play before the big day 

whilst West Ham were chasing 

promotion.

NEWS ROUND-UP 

FIRST PRO DEALS FOR 

ACADEMY GRADUATES 

Bolton Wanderers are delighted 

to confirm that three of their 

Academy players have been 

awarded first professional 

contracts. 

Defender Noah Halford and 

midfielder Sonny Sharples have 

signed deals to extend their stay 

with the Whites and move into the 

professional ranks. 

And 17-year-old Sam Inwood, who 

travelled with the first team squad 

to Oxford last weekend, has also 

agreed a three-year professional 

contract with the club. 

In addition, right-sided defender 

Wes Frimpong will move up to 

the B Team squad next season 

after activating a clause in his 

scholarship agreement to receive a 

first-year professional contract. 

Like Frimpong, Inwood, Halford 

and Sharples have all progressed 

through the Wanderers’ Academy 

for various lengths of their fledgling 

careers and as well as playing 

for the Whites’ Youth Team have 

also featured for the B Team and 

trained with Wanderers’ first-team 

squad. 

Inwood, a left-sided defender or 

wing-back who has also trained 

with the Republic of Ireland 

U19 squad, has been given a 

professional contract at the end 

of his first year as a scholar with 

Wanderers and will sign up until 

June, 2026. 

Halford and Sharples, who are 

both 18, have signed one-year 

deals with an option of a further 

12 months after nearing the end of 

their two-year scholarship deals 

as Wanderers continue to develop 

a pathway for homegrown young 

players to progress with the club. 

Wanderers’ Head of Academy, 

Dave Gardiner, said: “It’s fantastic 

for the Academy to see the three 

boys come through, all with 

different journeys. 

“We’ve known Sonny since he was 

under-8s. He left us for a while 

but he came back and has really 

progressed, so he’s deservedly got 

his contract. 

“Noah joined us at the end of 

his under-14 year and has come 

on leaps and bounds with great 

potential. 

“And Sam is a really versatile player 

who came half-way through his 

youth phase who can play in a 

number of positions and it’s really 

exciting to see how far we can take 

him with the pathway we’ve got at 

the club now.” 

Meanwhile, Wanderers will not 

be taking up options on secondyear 

scholars Adam Beardsworth, 

Joe Brown, Abdul Kamara, Danny

GOALKEEPERS’ UNION 

James Trafford fittingly formed 

part of a tribute to one of his 

legendary predecessors in the 

Wanderers’ goalkeeping shirt 

when the Whites played at Exeter 

City over Easter. 

Dick Pym – an England 

international and three-time FA 

Cup winner with Wanderers – 

is currently the subject of an 

exhibition marking his remarkable 

life and career in his hometown of 

Topsham in Devon. 

A historic blue plaque is also being 

erected in Topsham in honour 

of Pym, who played for Exeter 

before joining Wanderers in 1921 

and spending a decade with the 

Whites. 

Trafford and current Exeter 

goalkeeper Jamal Blackman were 

pictured with the plaque before 

Wanderers’ win at St James’ Park 

on Good Friday. 

Pym – known as the ‘Fisherman 

Footballer’ after being born into a 

fishing family and working in the 

fishing industry before and after his 

time in Bolton – played 336 games 

for the Whites. 

He was part of the Wanderers’ 

Cup-winning teams of 1923 in the 

White Horse Final and again in 

1926 and 1929. 

He didn’t concede a goal in any 

of the games and was the oldest 

living survivor of the great 1923 

Wanderers’ side up to his death in 

1988 at the age of 95. 

Pym – who toured South America 

with Exeter in 1914 before serving 

in the First World War – also won 

three England caps as the standout 

goalkeeper of the 1920s and 

is rightly remembered as a Bolton 

great.

Bury, the Telford-born midfielder 

then made it into the Premier 

League with Norwich City in 

He then took charge of hometown 

club Cheltenham Town and led 

them into the Football League for 

the first time and up to the third tier. 

After a spell at Stoke, he then 

enjoyed a successful time in 

charge of Burnley before winning 

promotions with Notts County and 

Bristol City either side of stints at 

Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest. 

He was then appointed manager 

of Shrewsbury in November, 2020 

moving to Coventry City in 2019. 

After two seasons with the Sky 

Blues – including a promotion 

success and a year in the 

Championship – Marosi joined 

Shrewsbury in June, 2021. 

Working under former Burnley 

keeper Brian Jensen, Marosi was 

an ever-present in League One last 

season before continuing as the 

Shrews’ number-one this term. 

The Rugby-born defender then 

returned nearer to his Midlands’ 

roots with a move to the Sadlers 

where he spent two seasons 

before joining Bristol Rovers. 

After 85 appearances for the ‘Gas’, 

Leahy linked up with Shrewsbury 

in May, 2021 and following 

an outstanding first season at 

Montgomery Waters Meadow was 

named club captain ahead of the 

2022/23 campaign. 

between two spells at Brighton and 

Hove Albion. 

He was also a regular 

Championship performer with 

Blackburn Rovers, where he spent 

five years before returning to 

Shropshire to join the Shrews in

Bennett made 48 appearances for

Dion Charles earned his place in 

Wanderers’ record books with a 

priceless winner at the Kassam 

Stadium. 

Charles pounced just seven 

minutes in to drill home his 20th 

goal of the season for the Whites. 

And as well as earning Ian Evatt’s 

men a second successive away 

win to keep their play-off push 

on course, the Northern Ireland 

international also became the first 

Wanderers player to reach the 20-

Charles, who has also scored twice

ABSEIL 

RAISES 

OVER 

£4000! 

Last Saturday afternoon saw us 

host the first ever BWFC Stadium 

Abseil, 59ft down the East 

Stand of the University of Bolton 

Stadium. All funds raised will go 

towards the preparation of Bolton 

Wanderers in the Community’s 

new ‘Wellbeing Hub’. 

Fans from across Bolton were 

offered the incredible opportunity 

to come down and take a slightly 

different route out of the stadium 

than usual. 

Participants were cheered on from 

not only a crowd of spectators but 

also Bolton FM, who were on-site 

in their mobile studio, providing the 

music and interviews once each 

abseiler touched the ground. 

Due to the increase in demand on 

our wellbeing and mental health 

services, funds will be going 

towards the ‘Wellbeing Hub’, which 

will enable us to offer a safe and 

inclusive space to continue to 

develop and expand our wellbeing 

services for our community. 

Through a combination of 

JustGiving pages and donation 

buckets, the current total raised sits 

at just over £4000! BWitC would 

like to thank all the participants and 

their donors enormously for their 

efforts which saw each individual 

raise between £80-£1000! 

Speaking fresh from his Abseil feat, 

Community Football Coach Jordan 

Hookway said: “I was nervous to 

begin with. At first I didn’t want to 

come down, but you can’t say that 

once you’re up there! Once you 

get going, the adrenaline, the rush 

is amazing!” 

The next fundraiser on the agenda 

was today’s annual Chairman’s 

Walk ahead of this afternoon’s 

match.

PUTTING IN THE MILES 

FOR GREAT CAUSES 

Early this morning, at 7.30am, 

Sharon Brittan, along with Nick 

Luckock and Neil Hart led a full 

team of enthusiastic walkers on a 

13-mile walk back to the stadium 

ahead of the game. 

As a nod to the 100-year 

anniversary since our first trip 

to the newly opened Wembley 

Stadium for the FA Cup Final, 

the “White Horse Final”, when 

many fans walked from Bolton to 

Wembley Stadium, the walk today 

has taken in many sites that evoke 

memories of the history of our 

Club. 

We began our walk at the Old 

Boltonians, Turton Football Club, 

the oldest pitch in the world. 

We took in the Bolton Castle 

Hotel, Tonge Moor Road and Nat 

Lofthouse’s public house, before 

going to Bromwich Street which 

was the BWFC training ground 

used by Brazil in 1966. 

We then went over the Bolton to 

Bury old railway line which would 

have been the ‘Embankment’ end 

of Burnden Park onto Le Mans 

Crescent, Bolton Museum where 

the Lowry paining of “Going to the 

Match” is currently being exhibited. 

From there we went on to the 

University of Bolton. Here are the 

old grounds of Christ Church FC 

which was formed on this site in 

1874 by the Reverend Joseph 

Farrell Wright and Thomas Ogden. 

The last leg of the walk took us 

past the Eddie Davies Academy 

opened in 2009, and is used 

by first team, academy and 

community. We finished in the 

home of our club since August 

1997, the University of Bolton 

Stadium which is located on 

Burnden Way, in recognition of the 

club’s former ground. 

This walk is all for a good cause 

to develop the Wellbeing Hub 

which will provide BWitC with a 

welcoming space to continue to 

deliver their mental health and 

wellbeing provision, which directly 

addresses the growing support 

people unfortunately require.

We are not the only ones 

fundraising today, as six dedicated 

Shrewsbury Town fans will be 

cycling around 100 miles from 

their home ground, Montgomery

their away-day dedication, but 

also will raise essential funds for 

Shrewsbury Town Foundation to 

continue their work within the local 

Shropshire community, enabling 

people to lead healthier and more 

active lifestyles.

secured the Northern Section 

Championship and went into a 

play off competition in which 

they faced Southern Runners Up 

Charlton at the Macron Stadium.

BACK AT SOME MEMORABLE GAMES. 

First half goals from Jeff King and 

Dennis Politic put them into a 

commanding position. Substitute 

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild pulled 

one back for Charlton but when 

captain, Liam Edwards, found the 

net in the 77th minute a place in 

the final was secured. 

In the other semi final Nottingham 

Forest defeated Southern 

champions Crystal Palace and so, 

three days later, Bolton visited 

the City Ground in the final. It was 

to be a double weekend against 

Forest, the Under 23’s in the final 

and the first team set to host them 

in the final League game of the 

season. 

The under 23’s secured the trophy 

and the overall championship 

thanks to goals from Stephen 

McKenna and Dennis Politic.

The Wanderers went into the 

final game of the season knowing 

they had to secure victory and 

hope results eleswhere went in 

their favour for them to avoid 

relegation back to League One 

whence they had come from 

twelve months earlier. 

Just one point and three goals 

scored from the previous seven 

games didn’t augur well for Bolton 

whilst Forest had nothing to play 

for. What was about to unfold was 

a game of so many ups and downs 

and a final crescendo that lives 

long in the memory.

38 year old striker Aaron 

Wilbraham was included in the 

starting line up for only the third 

time of the season at the expense 

of regular striker Adam Le Fondre 

but it was to be the latter, coming 

off the bench on the hour, who 

gave Bolton hope by opening the 

scoring from close range. 

The joy was shortlived as Forest 

levelled within three minutes 

through Ben Osborne and the 

stadium fell slient. Nine minutes 

later it seemed there was to be 

no escape when Jack Colback 

fired Forest ahead with eleven 

minutes remaining as the spectre 

of relegation began to hover. 

With four minutes left on the 

clock Le Fondre turned provider, 

squaring the ball to David Wheater 

to plant the ball into the net for an 

equaliser to give Bolton hope in 

the dying embers of the season. In 

the 88th minute it was Le Fondre 

again, this time pulling back a cross 

for Wilbraham to get in front of 

his marker to head Bolton’s third 

from the lowest point imaginable.

The crowd went wild and, after 

five minutes of added time, 

confirmation that both Burton 

Albion and Barnsley had lost, 

the great escape party began in 

earnest long into the night.

Bolton ended a run of one win 

in 19 games with a hard fought 

Boxing Day success against 

Rotherham thanks to goals from 

Sammy Ameobi and Gary O’Neil. 

For the first half an hour it was 

Rotherham who held the upper 

hand but it was Ameobi who broke 

the deadlock for the Wanderers 

when, after receiving the ball from 

O’Neil on the left, made space 

for himself to shoot low and hard 

beyond Marek Rodak in the Millers 

goal. (Pictured below) 

The lead lasted all of four 

minutes when Will Vaulks was 

left unmarked to head past Ben 

Alnwick for United’s equaliser 

but the second half saw a much 

improved display from Bolton. 

What turned out to be the winning 

goal came in the 65th minute when 

Ameobi and Clayton Donaldson 

combined, the latter finding O’Neil, 

who got the ball from under his 

feet to slide it past three defenders 

on the line. 

The Wanderers support celebrated 

but had to keep behind the team 

as they were holding on at the end 

especially during the six minutes 

of added time as Rotherham threw 

everything at them. 

The three points wasn’t enough 

to take the Wanderers out of the 

bottom three but left them just one 

point behind the side ethey had 

just defeated.

that tomorrow, at the EFL Awards 

in London, BWFC will learn 

whether they are winners of this 

year’s award, having been pitted 

against Lincoln City and Reading. 

To emphasise the positivity now 

in place at our club, there is also 

a BWFC nomination for the EFL 

Diversity Award where we will 

compete against Watford and 

Middlesbrough. 

The Fan Engagement Award 

nomination shows recognition 

for the projects undertaken 

involving club, trust and the BWFC 

fanbase including the opening 

of the Fanzone, establishment of 

a disabled supporters working 

EFL FAN ENGAGEMENT NOMINATION 

group, consultation on season 

ticket prices and the recent 

supporters survey. Add in the 

Bolton primary school family 

season ticket project and the fans 

vote on next season’s home and 

away kits, both BWFCST ideas, 

and it is no surprise to see the EFL 

take notice and acknowledge the 

level of fan engagement now in 

place. To emphasise the way the 

club, the fans and the community 

are working together, this morning 

saw the second “Chairman’s Walk” 

which is the latest in the BWitC 

fundraising projects, all proceeds 

going to assist with their work in 

the Bolton community.
