If you are reading this, it is
Valentine’s Day and you’re
seated in Earls Court with love
and excitement in the air. You
are at the first fully live
televised BRITs for 18 years
and you can’t wait for the
music to start.
It’s been a great year for
British music, which has achieved
the highest ratio of sales for more than a decade.
Seven out of the top 10 best selling albums were
British, giving a superb start to three debut acts,
and a special boost for three British female acts;
Lily Allen, who is the most nominated artist,
Corinne Bailey Rae, (high in the US Top 10 when
we went to press) and finally, Amy Winehouse,
who celebrates her UK No. 1 album. You’ll see two
of these artists perform tonight, as well as six
other acts who made headlines in 2006.
This year our Outstanding Contribution Award
goes to Oasis who need no further introduction
and will certainly add to the “live” excitement on
stage tonight.
We would like to thank all of the performing
artists for giving us their time and, of course, their
music tonight. And we congratulate the nominees
and winners of our cherished awards.
It takes a huge team to put together an event as
unique as the BRIT Awards and we would like to
thank the hundreds of people who made tonight’s
show possible, from my colleagues on the BRITs

Ladies and gentlemen, may we present
your irresistible dinner.
Tonight’s feast has been prepared
by a dedicated team of sixty chefs, who
have laboured with love to create the
ultimate Valentine’s meal. As you can
see, your table - decorated with cloths
of the richest reds and pinks - is already
prepared, and the evening promises to
be a sumptuous affair.
Soon, your meal will be served. A
mouthwatering mezze starter selection
is followed by the intense tastes of
guinea hen served with pickled ginger
and wasabi champ. Vegetarians can
savour a darling goat’s cheese tomato
bread and butter pudding, before dessert
options for all include chocolate box
truffles and a fine cheese platter. Each
serving of food comes with a little extra
love – 13,500 edible hearts adorn the
dishes as decoration.

The BRIT School
The famous BRIT School in Croydon has seen 15
years’ of graduates walk through its doors.
Established in 1991, The BRIT School receives
joint funding from the Department of Education
and Employment and, of course, The BRIT Trust. In
return, this unique school for performing arts has
given the music industry many of its leading lights.
Enthusiastic ex-students can be found working in
all sectors of the media and arts worlds, while
the role-call of famous faces who have benefi tted
from a unique BRITs education includes band
members from The Kooks, The Feeling and Athlete.
Katie Melua, Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and
Imogen Heap also learned their trade here.
Because of its unique charitable status,
students at The BRIT School do not pay school
fees. This allows freedom of opportunity to
talented applicants, regardless of their family
situation or background.
So far, more than 7,000 students aged 14-19 have
enjoyed studying in one of seven specialisations
– music, musical theatre, technical theatre, dance,
media and art and design. The school has an
excellent academic record and is proud of its
mix of traditional and vocational learning.

You Get What You Give
The BRIT Awards 2007 is a charity event
BRITs organisers are proud of the show’s tradition
of donating all profits from the award ceremony,
including money made from TV rights and
merchandise, to deserving good causes. This
makes it unique among music awards shows.
The BRIT Awards has raised a mammoth
£7 million pounds to date. The money is collected
and distributed by the music industry’s charity
body, The BRIT Trust.
The Trust was formed in 1989 by the BPI, the
organisation that represents the record industry in
Britain. These days, it organises a full calendar of
fundraising projects each year. The BRIT Awards is
the largest event, generating over half of the
amazing 13 million pounds raised so far.
All money collected is then awarded in the
form of donations to a wide variety of charities that
embody The Trust’s guiding ethos – to encourage
and educate young people through music. A
great many grassroots community projects have
received grants, including The Chicken Shed
Theatre Company, LIPA, Heart’n’Soul, Drugscope
and the Roundhouse Trust.
The BRIT Trust is also committed to give
its main fi nancial support to two very special
organisations, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy
and The BRIT School.

Nordoff-Robbins
Music Therapy
The Nordoff-Robbins organisation uses Music
Therapy to provide a brighter world for children and
adults who have problems with communication.
Often isolated and unable to express themselves
due to brain injury, learning difficulties or autistic
spectrum disorders, participants are encouraged to
use sound and music to gain access to otherwise
unreachable feelings and perhaps communicate
them for the first time. Demand for therapy is high,
and there is always more to be done. The charity
runs a centre of excellence in London, and has 21
outreach programmes, using music therapy to
benefit more that 10,000 people so far.
The techniques used at Nordoff-Robbins
centres were developed in the 1960s are
now recognised as an invaluable part of
treatment around the world.
Despite widespread recognition from health
practitioners, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy
receives no government funding and relies
on donations alone.
Their donations are raised through a calendar
of fundraising activities throughout the year,
including, of course, The BRIT Awards. With a
minimum of £2 million needed annually to
continue the good work, private donations
are always welcome.
