MANAGER’S NOTES
Well, where do I start?! It’s been a
whirlwind couple of days but
today we return to action with
objectives to meet and points to collect.
We have to maintain our professionalism
with another bumper crowd inside the
Lane expecting us to win.
There have been numerous interviews
since the final whistle in midweek and, no
doubt, you’ve heard or read everything
that I’ve got to say but as this is my final
programme notes of the season, I feel it
is important to thank and congratulate
everyone who has contributed to our
success this season.
Personally, what gives me the most
satisfaction, regardless of other factors,
is that we’ve kept that focus and
determination to achieve our goal. We’ve
had injuries, setbacks and challenges
to deal with, but huge, huge credit must
go to the players. They’ve been pushing
so hard this season after the scenes
at Nottingham Forest last season, and
they’ve been rewarded.
The attitude and application of the
group has been phenomenal, week
in, week out.
Let’s not forget, this league is tough, the
margins are so fine, but we found a way to
win a lot of matches and in midweek, the
game summed up a lot about what we’ve
done well and right.
West Brom are no mugs, they came to
win, they wanted to spoil the party and
hurt us, but we found a way to get over
the line, we changed our system three
times to make sure we stayed on the front
foot. Everyone on the pitch and the bench
was on board with it and trusts each
other, believing in themselves and people
around them. We back ourselves to go out
there and perform and we got stronger as
the game progressed, just like we have
through the season.
Also, a major part of the process is the
staff. Jack and Macca are huge influences,
they have been great for me personally
and lead a bigger team who are fantastic
operators in their respective fields in
preparing the players for battle every
couple of days.
I was glad to see Prince Abdullah and
the board were in attendance to enjoy
the celebrations. They deserve credit for
standing strong and holding their nerve
when, for the business, other decisions
could have been made – ultimately,
returning to the Premier League was the
goal and that’s been achieved.
It’s been a team effort and last but
certainly not least, the fans deserve
promotion. Numerous times I’ve called on
the supporters to help us because we’ve
needed it – you really don’t know how
much of a factor you are!
The noise generated in midweek was
different level. At kick-off, when the goals
went in and at the final whistle (many
thanks for staying off the pitch, by the way,
it’s great to see Sheffield United setting
the standard), it was an experience that
none of us will forget in a hurry.
Simply, the scenes of the other night
is what it is all about, moments like
these have to be earned and everyone,
and I mean everyone, at this club has
contributed.
The Blades are back in the big time!
United’s two-year absence from the Premier League is over after the Blades
secured the three points required for automatic promotion following a 2-0
victory over West Bromwich Albion.
Second half goals from Sander Berge and Anel Ahmedhodžić were enough to seal
the win in front of a sold-out Bramall Lane, which led to some memorable scenes on
and off the pitch as Paul Heckingbottom’s side basked in the glory of their success.
Here we take a look back on another unforgettable night at Bramall Lane as United
secured a return to English football’s Promised Land.
PLAYER VIEW:
Anel Ahmedhodžić
“It is amazing. I think
after scoring that
second goal, it was a
big relief. This is all I’ve
worked for all my life.
I haven’t scored for a
while, so I felt a goal
was coming. Big credit
to all the lads out there,
we fought like a team.
We have been solid at
the back all season, we
felt comfortable even
if we haven’t had any
chances, as long as we
are patient, we feel we
are going to score.”
Billy Sharp
“We said we didn’t
want to waste the
opportunity. Once we
got the breakthrough,
we were in control. The
lads have worked so
hard all season. We have
had spells this season
when we haven’t been
great, but we have
ground out results.
We’ve been chased so
“It is what we have
worked for all season.
To get promoted to
the Premier League is
something very special.
We have to enjoy it now.
We kept plugging away,
and during most games
this season, in the
second half we do seem
to find that breakthrough
and push on. Thankfully,
we did that. To get
promoted, it is what we
wanted and to do it is
special.”
EMOTIONAL MOMENT FOR OLI
Oli McBurnie admitted the
ovation he received from the
Blades fans following United’s
promotion winning game against West
Brom was an ‘emotional moment’.
United’s number nine produced
another gutsy display leading the line for
the Blades with his contribution not going
unnoticed by the fans who gave him a
standing ovation when he was replaced
by Billy Sharp during the second half at
Bramall Lane.
Oli revealed the response from the
30,000 plus inside the Lane was a
moment he’ll never forget after United
secured a return to the Premier League
following a two-year absence.
Oli said: “It was incredible, the fans
were beautiful. To give them that
experience, and to share that experience
with them is something I’ll never forget for
the rest of my life.
“The fans have been so good to me
over the last few years through ups and
downs, they’ve stuck with me the whole
time. It was a little bit emotional coming
off to that ovation, for them to give me
that reception was a great feeling.”
On the game itself, Oli admitted there
was a tinge of relief to ensure promotion
was secured before this weekend’s
game against Preston, and lauded the
Blades’ patience after a tough first
45 minutes against a well-organised
Albion side.
He added: “There was a mixture of
relief as well, getting it done tonight was
a big thing not letting it drag over the
coming weeks.
“The boys showed what we have done
so many times this year, when we are not
PLAYER FOCUS
at our best, finding a way to win against a
team who were hard to break down.
“The gaffer told us we were in the
game, but we hadn’t really started in the
first half. We had so much more to give
and sometimes it takes a mistake from
the opposition. I think a lot of it is down
to our press, we set it up to try and nick
the ball, we have done it so many times
this year. Ili then shows a bit of quality and
then Sander kicks it into the ground, and
it bounces over the defender. We’ll take
CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR SANDER
Sander Berge says
netting United’s
first goal in the
crucial promotion-winning
showdown in midweek
was the ‘best moment’ of
his career to date.
The Norway international
netted his seventh goal
of the campaign to break
the deadlock against a
stubborn West Brom side,
who had, up until then,
frustrated the Blades
in a crucial promotion
showdown.
▲ Sander enjoys opening the scoring against West Brom
PLAYER FOCUS
Sander hailed the work
of Iliman Ndiaye who
provided the assist, and
admitted scoring in front
of the Shoreham end was
the best moment of his
career so far.
He said: “It is the best
moment in my football
career, scoring the opener
in a game which we ended
up going up in, it couldn’t
be better. In front of the
Kop, it is amazing.
“I saw him (Ndiaye)
getting the ball and then
I knew he was turning
because he didn’t really
have an angle to shoot.
Once he turned his man,
I knew I had to get in front
of the goals. I just reacted
off his quality and decision
making which is top notch.
The ball he delivered was
perfect.”
Sander also stated that
earning promotion in front
of 30,000 Blades fans at
Bramall Lane was a perfect
scenario, hailing the faithful
for their continued support
since he arrived in S2.
He added: “The support
has been brilliant all
season so to win promotion
here was special.
“They have been there
every day since I arrived
here, they have been huge
for me and us as a team.
I can’t thank them enough,
and it was great to share
the moment with them.
“It’s where we wanted it
to be done. You want to do
it yourself, you don’t want
to rely on other results.
I am a little bit speechless
when things just happen
like that.
“The earlier we got it
done, the better. We knew
we had four games to do
it, but to do it on home soil
was special. Just a fantastic
moment.”
SITTING DOWN WITH
JACK
Jack
ROBINSON
Robinson
He’s not one to go
chasing the spotlight, in
fact despite his
crunching tackles and
wholehearted nature on the
pitch, he is more than happy to
do his talking where it matters
rather than in the media.
But having arguably
been one of United’s most
consistent performers this
season, particularly during the
second half of a campaign that
culminated in securing automatic
promotion to the Premier League
in midweek, Jack Robinson
broke his silence to speak
exclusively to UTB and reflect
on a fantastic achievement that
has been built on togetherness,
belief and a unity that has grown
stronger as the pressure has
increased.
The in-form defender has
racked up 29 appearances this
term, but it is his contribution in
2023 that has particularly caught
the eye, so much so he has kept
the experienced Ciaran Clark out
of the reckoning and has started
every league game since mid-
January. Typically, though it isn’t
any personal accolades he is
after, he says he had one focus
at the beginning of pre-season
and now that aim has become
a reality, he plans to enjoy the
moment before looking ahead
to having another crack at the
Premier League.
Robbo wears his heart on his
sleeve, never shirks a tackle or
backs down in confrontation,
but not only has he contributed
heavily to an impressive clean
sheet tally this term, the nononsense
defender has chipped
in with three important goals,
the last a bullet header against
Cardiff City earlier this month.
That goal came just days
after a misunderstanding
with Wes Foderingham led to
the goalkeeper seeing red at
Burnley and Jack subsequently
being substituted but it was his
reaction following his departure
from the pitch at Turf Moor that
you could see just how much
being successful would mean
to him, thankfully now the only
way is up!
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

UTB 21
UTB: Jack, there is only one
place to start…what a night it was
under the Bramall Lane lights
in midweek. Promotion to the
Premier League secured, mission
accomplished?
JR: “The reaction from the
players, staff and fans when the
full-time whistle went said it all,
we’ve never had it easy here
in my time, but we’ve always
remained together, focused and
determined to prove anybody
who wants to try and shoot us
down wrong. Thankfully we have
a habit of doing that. First half we
were a bit edgy, but we knew we
might have to be patient, West
Brom are chasing a play-off spot
and caused us a few problems,
but kicking towards the Kop
second half, we’ll always back
ourselves to nick a goal and see
the game out. Thankfully Anel
got the second which made
the last 10 minutes or so more
comfortable, but just like against
Bristol City, we remained patient
and trusted the players at the
top of the pitch to produce the
goods like they have all season in
fairness.”
UTB: Would it be fair to
assume the celebrations went on
long into the night and the early
hours of Thursday morning? Is it
now a case of relief about what
has been achieved or excitement
for the future?
JR: “It probably hasn’t sunk
in yet and probably won’t until
we can sit down at the end of
the season and reflect properly,
but the celebrations on the
pitch shows how much it means
to us all, both individually and
collectively and rightly we are
delighted to have got over the
line with three games remaining.
We’ve won 26 times from 43
matches this season, which is
a fantastic record and come
3pm on Saturday we’ll be
focused on going out there and
beating Preston North End. The
celebrations went deep into the
early hours as you’d expect and
there is nothing wrong with really
enjoying the moment because
we’ve put everything into making
sure this season became an
unforgettable one. We’ve won
promotion, that doesn’t happen
every season at any club, so
we’re definitely going to enjoy it
and try and take it all in before
looking ahead to next season.”
“THE CELEBRATIONS ON
THE PITCH SHOWS HOW
MUCH IT MEANS TO US ALL,
BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND
COLLECTIVELY AND RIGHTLY
WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HAVE
GOT OVER THE LINE WITH
THREE GAMES REMAINING”
UTB: Let’s change tack and
focus on you. The editorial
team knows more than most
that you aren’t one to chase the
spotlight! But how would you
assess your own contribution to
what can now be termed as a
memorable season?
JR: “I’ve enjoyed every minute
of this season, particularly playing
regularly and consistently since
the turn of the year, it has been
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

22 UTB
a challenge with Clarky pushing
me, but I feel I’ve taken my
chance that the gaffer gave me
and he’s kept me in ever since.
I’ve got a great relationship with
Ciaran, we’re both experienced
“THEY SAY STRIKERS WIN
YOU GAMES, DEFENDERS
WIN YOU TITLES, WE’VE
NOT QUITE DONE THAT,
BUT WE’LL HAPPILY
TAKE SECOND PLACE”
enough to know if you aren’t
playing you have to be pushing
the one with the shirt and
we’ve done that. He is a great
professional who has enjoyed
an excellent career and he is
someone I have really looked
up to, he has been good for me,
I’ve had to fight for my place
and that’s largely down to him
because his experience has been
fantastic, driving standards in
training and pushing players like
myself to perform on a matchday.”
UTB: Three goals this season,
including an arrowing half volley
against Swansea City and a
bullet of a diving header against
Cardiff City, you must have been
delighted to secure what was a
such a crucial goal at the time?
JR: “It was all down to the
ball from Tommy (Doyle) to be
fair, I just did the easy bit! I love
scoring and my reaction to every
goal tells you that. I don’t
score loads, but I know it is
important to chip in with
a few and it is something
I’ve managed to do here
particularly this season.
The one against
Burnley pleased me a
lot at the time because
of the state of the
game and what had
already happened,
but the strike
against Swansea
was a clean
one and
the header
against
Cardiff
put us in
front, so
every goal is
important, but if we
keep a clean sheet
at the other end,
we are going to
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

UTB 23
win a lot of matches like we have
done and that is instrumental to
our success. They say strikers
win you games, defenders
win you titles, we’ve not quite
done that, but we’ll happily take
second place.”
UTB: Finally, if we can
cast your mind back to Turf
Moor, did your reaction to
being substituted following
Wes Foderingham’s red card
epitomise your character, but
more importantly show your
commitment and desire to
succeed?
JR: “It is just my passion and
the adrenaline that is going
through my veins in a game. I’m
shattered after every game when
I come off, I hate having to go and
speak to the media or anything
like that. If I’ve done my job
properly, I just want to have a chat
with my dad and get off home.
I spoke to Hecky straightaway
at Burnley and just apologised
for my reaction. I know it wasn’t
the right thing to have done,
but I was gutted with what had
happened and I didn’t want to
be dragged off and having to sit
there reflecting on it. We laughed
about it afterwards, once the
dust had settled, like him I’m
just disappointed we didn’t get
the chance to go there and try
and beat them 11 v 11, but that
has gone now. Congratulations
to them as champions of
the division, but we’re not
complaining going up with them
as runners up.”
UNDER-21s UPDATE
United’s incredible 13-match
unbeaten run came to an end at
the Swansea.com Stadium after a
4-1 defeat to Swansea City.
After a quiet opening, the hosts took the
lead when a cross from the left was turned
into his own net by Levis Pitan.
The Blades tried to respond with both
Antwoine Hackford and Luther Williams
going close and the pressure paid off just
before the break. A dangerous cross from
the right was seized upon by Jili Buyabu
who tapped in at the back post.
The lead didn’t last though when the
hosts were awarded a penalty, with Josh
Thomas converting to make it 2-1.
The game drifted away from United in
the final 20 minutes when Thomas added
a second to make it 3-1 and the game was
then sealed when Thomas completed
his hat-trick to cap a very good individual
display.
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United’s U18s produced another
impressive win after downing
Birmingham City 4-1.
The Blades made a lightning start,
taking the lead inside the first 10 minutes
when Sam Aston’s half-volley flew into the
top corner.
Brandon Ly went close to making it 2-0,
whilst Jack Waldron also hit the crossbar.
Just before the half-hour mark, the
Blades did get their second when Noah
Kiwomya scored his first under 18s goal,
latching on to a cross from Stafford Clarke.
Birmingham did pull one back, but the
two-goal advantage was restored when
Aston’s low effort was deflected into the
corner.
With three minutes remaining Tavio
Ciccarelli added further gloss after a
flowing move which saw young substitute
Arlo Coubrough slide the ball across goal
for the striker to tap home.
TEAM (vs Birmingham City): Yam, Waldron (Colechin
United Women are looking to
round off the Women’s
Championship season on a high
with the final game of the campaign
coming up tomorrow against
Southampton.
Jonathan Morgan’s side have found
their form in recent weeks after picking
up three wins on the spin against Bristol
City, Coventry United and Sunderland,
with the Blades comfortably sealing their
Championship status for another season.
The Blades have also been free scoring,
netting eight goals in their last two games.
Ahead of tomorrow’s finale against the
Saints, Morgan said: “I said to the girls that
results have gone our way with Blues and
Durham, hopefully they’ll draw on the final
day of the season.
“If we can beat Southampton, then we
can pick up that seventh place which
I don’t think anyone would have expected
that five weeks ago. If that happens, we’ll
be really pleased.
“We’ll train hard, focus on what we need
to for Southampton and look to spoil their
final game of the season in their stadium.”
SUPPORTERS
CLUB
Welcome for what is the final home game
of the season.
It has been a very busy few weeks for
the Supporters Club especially at our
matchday home the Sidney & Matilda,
where we were firstly pleased to host our
overseas members Sharon Warner and
Derrion Roberts on Good Friday.
They enjoyed the atmosphere so
much that they are both flying in to join
us again for the last two home games at
the Lane. If any Blades supporters are in
the Fuengirola area during the summer
Sharon would be only to pleased to
welcome you all at The Wessex Bar.
We were then delighted to be hosts to
Look North prior to the semi-final again at
the Sidney & Matilda, and then on to the
coach to Wembley on the day, where the
supporters and the team did everyone
proud.
As we wish you all an enjoyable
summer break can we please make
a plea to let the players show their
appreciation to you, and you to them, by
staying off the pitch.
Thankyou in advance for your cooperation
BIRTHDAY
CELEBRATIONS
FOR MARY
Mary Hall – a Blade since the 1950s – will be
celebrating her 86th Birthday today in the TC
Suite.
Mary will be looking forward to celebrating with
her dear friends Tony and Liz Currie after making a
fine recovery from a serious recent illness and her
enthusiasm for United remains as strong as ever.
Mary would like to thank everyone at the Lane
who has supported her so well through some
difficult times.
Son Chris will also be sharing this special day
with Mary, as it also the 60th anniversary of his
first ever match at Bramall Lane when in April 1963
he attended a game against Leyton Orient (2-0 to
the Blades) under floodlights and saw the great
Len Badger make his first team debut.
We hope you both have a great day with us this
afternoon.
TC WELCOME
FOR WADE
Blades ambassador Tony Currie
is welcoming a very special
guest for today’s visit of Preston.
Unfortunately, Wade was
diagnosed with a terminal brain
tumour in July 2022 and is
currently undergoing a course of
chemotherapy.
After hearing this news, TC
wanted to make today’s game
a special one for Wade, who is
53 today.
Wade is huge fan of TC and of
the Blades, and also cites Brian
Deane and Tony Agana as two of
his other United heroes.
It is a family of Blades with
Wade’s wife Caroline and
daughter Angel all having bricks
in the wall around Bramall Lane,
as well as Wade’s grandparents
and parents.
Wade and his family are TC’s
guests for the afternoon, enjoy
your day with us.
UTB 35
John Garrett’s
FABLES & FOLKLORE
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
The loneliness of the long-distance crisp packet...
I am sure that every football fan
has, at some point in their journey,
felt that searing pang of
loneliness, boredom and futility that is the
depths of the beautiful game. The point
when you genuinely wonder why you are
bothering being there and why you have
spent so much of your time and money to
actually do it.
When I say ‘everyone’ it has to be said
that I have a tad less sympathy for Man
Utd fans, Liverpool supporters and the
legion of Premier League fans that see a
couple of years without a trophy or getting
knocked out of European competition in
the quarter finals as being the end of the
world, but I suppose that it’s all relative to
the situation.
When I was growing up it was Leeds or
Liverpool who always seemed to be there
or thereabouts every season. Occasionally
another side would have a crack, such as
Man U or Arsenal, and then Forest and
▲ Happier times for Reg Brealey and Dave Bassett
Ipswich came along under Clough and
Robson respectively, but as of today, it
was generally the same faces at the party.
That’s where my annoyance of Liverpool
as a teen was born from. They had players
who were, without a doubt, the best
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

36 UTB
I had seen. Dalglish was incredible and
I loved Heighway, Hanson and co, but
my generation, unless you were a red
of course, just got sick of them winning
everything. By contrast, there’s many clubs
who don’t win much or, indeed, anything at
all! I got excited when we unveiled Captain
Blade as a mascot. At that point it was a
highlight following relegation and pulling
down John Street only to find that we were
skint and couldn’t afford to rebuild it.
The board had decided 20 years before
that to press forward and we could not
survive any more as a three-sided stadium.
Notice was put on the cricket side to
leave, and the South Stand was built on
the wicket, it was at this time we were
surging towards Division Four football. You
couldn’t have made it up really. A decade
on from that demise and we were back
in the old Division Two once more with
three sides and not a lot to get excited
about. As a Blade, we have had some
pretty desperate times, but it’s that era, for
some reason, which always sticks out in
▲ John Gannon in action against Huddersfield
at Bramall Lane back in December 1995
my mind as being one of abject misery and
complete lack of any real direction.
Relegation was horrendous, and of that
there can be no doubt. Never did anyone
think that our proud and famous club
would find themselves in the basement
of the Football League, but even in that
dark hour there came a camaraderie, the
realisation that things really couldn’t get
any worse and we had to fight back. The
advent of Reg Brealey to chairman brought
a spending power to Ian Porterfield’s
pocket that helped build the team that
“THERE WAS STILL ENOUGH IN THE
WAY OF PRIMITIVE SANITATION
AND POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARDS
PRESENT TO KEEP EVEN THE
BIGGEST FOOTBALL PURIST HAPPY
UNTIL THE WRECKING BALL PUT
IT TO REST ONCE AND FOR ALL”
won the Championship at a canter and
gave legends for a new era such as Keith
Edwards and Colin Morris and also gave
Sheffield United its pride back. The mid-
90s just seemed to be like a boat on the
Graves Park lake with one oar. The good
work Reg did in the first place had really
unraveled, starting with the sale of Brian
Deane to Leeds, an act that saw chief exec
Derek Dooley inform him that he had “got
Sheffield United relegated” and he was, to
all intents and purposes, right.
Personally, I didn’t really blame the chair
of the club for the overall predicament.
Without him, when he took over, we were
in such a mess that there could well have
been no Sheffield United full stop, and he
had given us a couple of good years with
IP and also delivered Dave Bassett into our
arms who had given us two promotions,
seen us become founding members of
the Premier League, delivered us an
FA Cup quarter-final and semi-final and
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

UTB 37
single handedly brought back the media
attention that his quote per comment
persona had in spades, but even the ever
effervescent Harry had grown tired of the
struggle. Investment seemed to dry up,
I suppose there is only so much you can
put in, and there was no doubt that he
wanted to sell us and had actively tried
on several occasions to do just that, but
it wouldn’t be us if it was that easy. The
fighting amongst the fans had also got out
of hand and the atmosphere was poison. A
red card to the board protest was arranged
and I seem to recall that was for a game
against Huddersfield Town which we lost
2-0 in front of about 12,000 hardy souls on
a wet December 9th, and that was the final
straw for Harry who resigned on the 12th.
The feeling of loss was incredible, but
it summed up where we were, and it was
about that time that I took an interest in the
affairs of crisp bags in football, because
there wasn’t frankly a whole lot else
happening. We had done the usual match
day ritual, which generally meant meeting
in the Mulberry Tavern, putting Led
Zeppelin on the video juke box numerous
times to keep my best mate happy, and
having a pint or two on our way to the
game. Believe me, the weather was as
bleak that day as all else associated with
the club at that point.
We had been on the Kop since John
Street’s demise and for a number of years
after the Kop had been made an all-seater,
we perched in the old west paddock,
which I had quite enjoyed. Admittedly,
you didn’t have someone relieving
themselves down the back of your leg
in quite the same way as you tended to
towards the middle of the back section of
the Shoreham, but there was still enough
in the way of primitive sanitation and
potential fire hazards present to keep even
the biggest football purist happy until the
wrecking ball put it to rest once and for all.
▲ Nathan Blake goes close but United are
defeated in Dave Bassett’s last game
There was still no screen on the John
Street side of the Kop then, and as a result
of the weather the rain was being blown
in from that side as early darkness fell,
making it the perfect scene for the misery
happening out on the turf before our
eyes. We both sat in silence with the only
positive being that we had recently finally
got a new owner a few days earlier in the
shape of Manchester businessman Mike
McDonald, so there seemed to be a ray of
shining through on a grim day.
From where we were sat, and without
the cover that the old stand had once
given, the light of the windows of the
Cricketer’s Arms beckoned, and my mate
looked longingly at the pub.
“You can see the Cricketers from here,”
he stated, and to be fair he was stating the
obvious because there really was nothing
else there. Nothing was said for a few long
minutes until, and without ceremony, he
rose from his soggy seat, zipped his coat
up, sagely patted me on the shoulder and
I watched him make his way down the
stand, turn right at the front, walk up to the
poor steward who was trying to stop the
makeshift gate fashioned blow away or, in
the weather simply dissolve, and then saw
his head proceed down John Street, cross
Bramall Lane and enter that kingdom of
excitement and promise known better as
the Cricketers Arms to drown his sorrows.
I think it was around this time in the
game that I became aware of a solitary
crisp packet, seemingly being blown
around the pitch in the same way that
supporters' hopes were being savagely
booted in the crotch by those fabled
footballing Gods, and after a while the
crisp bag became far more interesting than
the game.
I mean, why was it there? Had it come
to the game alone and if not, where were
its mates? I couldn’t quite make out the
brand or, indeed the flavour, and that in
itself cannot always be judged by the
colour of it, can it? I mean in the real world,
cheese and onion crisps should be in a
blue bag, it’s the rule, but I know that some
firms actually put them in a green bag,
which I believe is just plain wrong. Another
problem is that prawn cocktail from one
company, from a distance, can look very
like their ready salted, and again that’s just
not right – far too much ambiguity!
As the bag danced across the playing
surface, it struck me that it was displaying
far more skill than many of our players
that day, and it also became apparent
to me that the bag was actually far more
entertaining than the game I had been
watching. It also struck me that the lager
we had been drinking prior to the game
was, indeed, far too strong, especially
as I was finding myself bonding with the
wrapping for some savoury comestibles.
The Huddersfield ‘keeper tried to boot
it out of the way, and it simply did a Cruyff
turn and eluded him. It then stuck to his
▲ A bright new dawn starts with the construction
of the new John Street Stand
right boot as it tried to block his attempts
to clear the ball and he nearly slipped on
his backside trying to remove it from his
Stylo matchmaker. How I laughed.
The bag went in the back of the Terriers
net far more than the ball did and I believe
that it got voted as Blades player of the
game that day, then, as quickly as ‘Old
Baggy’ had appeared, he was off, spirited
away by a sudden gust of wind, off over
the remains of the old stand, probably
looking for a pint with my mate.
From then on, I have always had a
fascination for a football bag. They remind
me of a time when I would probably have
enjoyed Meadowhall more than Bramall
Lane but, like all of us, I need my fix, and
probably always will. Within days, Howard
Kendall had come through the front doors
as they smuggled Dave out of the back.
Gordon Cowans, Andy Walker, Michel
Vonk and others arrived, and things began
to change. We finished ninth, got the stand
rebuilt and reached the play-off final the
following year. What was the panic, and
more to the point, what WAS the flavour?
WHAT’S THE
STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular
contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW features a
Blades related photograph from his personal
archive and reveals the story behind it…
In what turned out to be his last
season as manager of Sheffield
United, John Harris had
strengthened his squad in the summer of
1973 by signing utility player Colin Franks
from Watford.
Franks was now the fourth ex-Watford
player in the squad joining Keith Eddy,
Tony Currie and Stewart Scullion.
The 1973-74 season saw the Blades
make an inconsistent start losing three of
their first six league games, winning twice
and drawing once. One of the wins was
especially memorable as Arsenal were
beaten 5-0 at Bramall Lane and Tony
Currie took the chance to gain revenge on
Arsenal midfielder Alan Ball by sitting on
the ball with the Blades so much in control.
Ball had done this to the Blades in January
1972 when the Gunners had won 5-0 at
the Lane.
The Blades’ seventh league game of the
season was away to Tottenham Hotspur,
played on Saturday 15th September 1973.
Today’s photograph features action from
this game played at White Hart Lane
before a crowd of 26,350. The image
shows Spurs attacking with a high ball
being aimed at their star striker Martin
Chivers, who was also an England
international.
Chivers is seen competing for the ball
with United defenders Ted Hemsley with
the number three on his shorts and Eddie
Colquhoun. Ted and Eddie had been
signed for the Blades in the first part of
the 1968-69 season by then manager,
Arthur Rowley. Both had gone on to give
United fantastic service. Ted had joined
the club initially as a midfielder but had
successfully been converted to become a
reliable full-back whilst Eddie’s form had
been impressive enough for him to win
full caps with Scotland. Both players had
played a key role in helping the club win
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

UTB 41
promotion back to the top flight at the end
of the 1970-71 season.
This game saw the Blades achieve an
impressive 2-1 win. Alan Woodward, with
his 100th league goal for the club, had
given the Blades the lead in the 36th
minute. It was a lead they held until the
66th minute when Chivers equalised.
However, Blades’ Scottish international
striker Jim Bone notched an 86th
minute winner.
In spite of this fine win, the Blades’
results generally remained inconsistent,
and the board had let it be known that
they were hoping to appoint a younger
track-suited manager to take charge of
team affairs with Harris being offered an
alternative role with the club.
In the event, Harris’s last game as
manager was in a 3-1 defeat at Coventry
City on 24th November 1973. His
successor was former Watford and
Blackburn Rovers boss Ken Furphy whose
first game in charge was a 0-0 draw at
Queens Park Rangers on 8th December.
One of the challenges faced by Furphy
was the need to strengthen the depth
of the squad which still relied heavily on
those who had won promotion back in
1971. The Blades ended this season of
major off the field change in 13th place
with Spurs finishing in 11th place.
BLADESMEN MAKE AN
IMPRESSION ON WHIRLWIND
It’s not just on the
football pitch where the
Bladesmen have
impressed this season, just ask
snooker legend Jimmy White
who recently paid a visit to the
club’s training headquarters at
Shirecliffe.
In the build up to United’s
recent FA Cup semi-final, Jimmy
joined the likes of Billy Sharp,
Iliman Ndiaye and Tommy Doyle
for a game of pool in the Players’
Lounge at the Randox Health
Academy and noted the playing
ability of his opponents, as all
three took on the Whirlwind
for a series of special lighthearted
frames.
Jimmy, who is working as
a pundit for Eurosport at the
Snooker World Championships
in the Steel City, took a break
from the comfort of the Crucible
studio, to run the rule over some
of United’s cue men, and had
praise for some of the quality
on offer.
Jimmy said: “The standard
wasn’t too bad. Billy (Sharp) can
play, and Tommy (Doyle) won
the match. Billy is good, I think
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END

UTB 47
he has a table at home. Years
ago, Gary Lineker was a really
good snooker player, he’d make
century breaks. It’s a bit of fun for
the footballers, but I must say, if
you do get promoted you have to
treat the lads to a new pool table!
“Sheffield United are flying and
I really hope you get promoted.
I keep sticking them in my
accumulator every week, but
I don’t gamble! I’d love to see you
guys in the Premier League.”
Jimmy has been a regular
visitor to Sheffield since his debut
at the Crucible back in 1981 and
has had previous with United’s
training facility where it was
once home to the Star Snooker
Academy.
Jimmy explained: “I’ve been
here many years ago when
there was a snooker academy
here, so I been here many
times practicing. It was good to
come back.
“I love Sheffield. Obviously
playing in so many World
Championships down the years,
and I now work for Eurosport.
I love coming back to Sheffield
and seeing the city.
“I come from south London, salt
of the earth type of people. It is
the same with Sheffield. You have
good people, and if there’s a
bad apple, they get thrown away,
which I like.”
Whilst he admits to enjoying
the TV work, Jimmy still has a
burning desire to compete, and
after a good season where he
claimed his tour card, he is now
looking ahead to the World
Seniors Championships which
is also staged at the Crucible
beginning May 3rd.
“Ronnie (O’Sullivan) said to
me about eight years ago about
working for Eurosport, and we
have great fun,” explained the six
times Crucible finalist.
“I still love the game. I am still
on the main tour, so it is good
fun. I got my tour card on merit,
but I fell short of qualifying for
the World Championship so
that was a bit disappointing but
next season I go into it full of
confidence. It’s not like football
or boxing, if you have the desire
to practice and your game is still
there, then you can keep going.
“The seniors starts three days
after the World Championship
at the Crucible, so I get to play
there again and I get to see some
old friends like Cliff Thorburn and
others coming over for it, so it will
be great fun.”
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
from the past between the Blades and our opponents…
PRESTON NORTH END 0-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
SATURDAY 20th OCTOBER 2012
Dave Kitson scored
the only goal as
United extended
an unbeaten run to 13
games under then boss
Danny Wilson.
It was the striker’s third
goal of the season since
arriving from Portsmouth on
a free transfer two months
previously.
With both clubs expected
to be challenging for
promotion at the top of
League One, the trip to
Deepdale was considered
United’s biggest challenge
to date but the Blades
came through with flying
colours.
The winning goal, on 43
minutes, was executed in
the simplest of fashion.
Tony McMahon’s long
clearance up field saw the
ball fall to Kitson and his
well-timed effort lobbed the
ball over Lilywhites stopper
Thorsten Stuckman from
the edge of the area.
The former Reading
forward had played
despite an illness before
being substituted at halftime
for Chris Porter. “At
half-time he was so sick
that we couldn’t possibly
keep him on the pitch,”
said Wilson.
United’s victory was
largely deserved; however,
they were almost denied a
victory at Deepdale for the
second successive season
in the dying moments
of the game when Paul
Huntington’s goal-bound
header was spectacularly
saved by George Long.
Whilst Kitson was the
hero, it was his fellow
teammate, Nick Blackman,
who was credited with the
Man of the Match award
for his exploits. He came
close in the second half to
scoring after his low strike
ricocheted off Huntington
and cannoned off the
post.
United geared up for the
2003 Division One play-offs with a
morale boosting 3-0 home win against
Bradford City. A Michael Brown brace
(one a penalty) and a Peter Ndlovu strike
downed the Bantams in the penultimate
league game of a famous season.
ON THIS DAY
UTB looks back into the archives to find out what
happened on this day in United’s history…
APR
A stunning second half
2022 showing ensured United
came back from a goal down to defeat
QPR at Loftus Road. Rangers led thanks
to a goal from Charlie Austin, but a
ruthless second 45 saw goals from
Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Robinson and Conor
Hourihane as United held onto a play-off
spot going into the final game against
Fulham.
United had turned their
2014 season around to climb to
eighth with two games remaining, but
well short of the points required for a
play-off spot. Nigel Clough’s side were
six league games unbeaten when they
arrived at Boundary Park but fell behind
to Oldham after future Blade James
Wilson netted. Ex-Oldham striker Chris
Porter equalised six minutes from time
with his 11th of the season.
United held a slender
1989 advantage in the automatic
promotion places of the old Division
Three and travelled to Fulham who
still held a slim chance of catching the
Blades. Goals from Tony Agana and Ian
Bryson earned a 2-2 draw and United
would eventually earn promotion with a
game to spare.
WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
David Holdsworth...
David Holdsworth and his twin
brother Dean began their league
careers together at Watford.
David, a central defender, made his
league debut in 1988. He experienced a
number of injury problems whilst at
Vicarage Road, but he still made a great
impression when he won England
honours at both youth and U21 levels.
As part of Howard Kendall’s squad
rebuild aiming to win promotion to
the Premier League, David joined the
Blades in October 1996 for a reported
fee of £500K. He was soon made
captain and impressed as a reliable and
strong defender who could organise his
defensive team effectively. He played a
key role in helping the Blades reach the
final of the 1996-97 play-offs unfortunately
losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
As well as his defensive qualities,
David was comfortable on the ball and
dangerous at set pieces. On and off
the field he was a great ambassador for
the club. One of the most memorable
moments he gave United fans was his
last-minute equalising goal against
Coventry City in the FA Cup quarter-final
replay at the Lane during the 1997-98
season. The Blades went on to win the
game after extra time and penalties.
He did suffer from injury problems
during the 1998-99 season but was still a
key player and it was a blow when he was
sold to Birmingham City in March 1999 for
a reported £1.2 million. It was reported
that David did not want to leave the Lane.
With City he reached another play-off
final at the end of the 1998-99 season,
this time against his old club Watford. He
was sent off as City lost out on penalties.
He remained with Birmingham until the
end of the 2001-02 season. He did have
a short spell with Walsall on loan during
2002 where he was sent off twice.
After leaving Birmingham, he had a very
brief spell at Bolton Wanderers playing
just one competitive game before signing
for non-league Scarborough for the
remainder of the 2002-03 season.
David’s playing career continued in
Scotland when he joined Gretna for the
period 2003 to 2005. His managerial
career also started here when he was
appointed reserve team manager and
then director of youth development. This
latter role did not last long as he was
sacked as part of a cost-cutting exercise.
He then focused on running his soccer
schools and working as a summariser for
BBC Radio Sheffield.
His first club management job came
in May 2008 at Ilkeston Town of the
Northern Premier League Premier
Division. After an impressive start in
December 2008, David was appointed
manager of Conference National League
club Mansfield Town.
▲ Managing against brother Dean for Mansfield Town
against Newport County back in September 2010
Whilst with Mansfield he had the
experience of managing against his twin
brother Dean, in a league game against
Newport County. He left the Stags by
mutual consent in November 2010.
In October of the following year, he
A WHOLE
NEW
BALL
GAME
Since the last home game against Blackburn, United had
rallied to preserve Premier League status for another year.
The Blades took the lead in the Sheffield derby against
Wednesday through Brian Deane before Paul Warhurst
earned Wednesday a point.
United then took on Nottingham Forest in a huge relegation
six-pointer in Brian Clough’s final home game in charge, with
goals from Glyn Hodges and Brian Gayle earning a 2-0 win.
Another impressive away win followed as goals from Hodges and
Carl Bradshaw recorded a 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park.
This meant survival was secured (barring a mathematical miracle), so the pressure
was off for the final game as United beat Chelsea 4-2 with goals from Andy Scott, Paul
Rogers and Dane Whitehouse (2). United ended the season in 14th position.
The manager was in reflective mood as he looked back on the season, outlining a
number of games which included the 6-0 win over Spurs. This ensured a healthy
goal difference over Oldham which meant United were safe going into this game.
There was also praise for the reserves who secured survival in the Pontins League,
and of course, the fans for the continued support. At the end, the manager
expressed displeasure at the Sheffield Star, admitting he’d written to the editor to
FINAL FLOURISH
SEES UNITED SAFE
For a time, it looked like survival was going to the wire,
but Dave Bassett’s Blades avoided a tense finish with
back-to-back away wins to end the 1992-93 campaign
on a high...
When United arrived at the City
Ground for the relegation six-pointer
against Nottingham Forest, a defeat
in Brian Clough’s final home game in
charge would have dragged Bassett’s
side right back into the mire with just
two games to go.
The Blades held their nerve to not
only relegate Forest with a 2-0 win
thanks to goals from Glyn Hodges and
Brian Gayle, but three days later also
▲ Congratulations to Brian Gayle as United
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs PRESTON NORTH END
travelled to Goodison Park to down
Everton 2-0 with goals from Hodges
again and Carl Bradshaw.
Barring a mathematical miracle,
the Everton result ensured survival
meaning a buoyant Bramall Lane could
relax as United ended the season with
4-2 success against Chelsea.
A season where a final day
showdown seemed almost inevitable,
ended with United finishing in a
comfortable 14th position in the
inaugural Premier League season.
Starting the last four games of the
season, Charlie Hartfield played a
pivotal role in United’s late flourish,
providing an assist for Gayle’s header
at Forest and helping to steer the
Blades to a huge win at Goodison Park.
Charlie told UTB: “The competition
was huge in midfield, and we had some
great players. I must have been playing
well at that time in the season to get
in ahead of some of the other boys
because they were really good players.
“I’ll never forget the Forest game;
it was huge for all kinds of different
reasons. It was a pressure game,
but we stood up to it and beat them
2-0 to send them down. I remember
the day well. It was a baking hot

▲ Glyn Hodges celebrates United’s opener against Nottingham Forest;
Party time after the final game of the season against Chelsea
day; we needed the points. What
I remember really from the Forest
game was obviously all the attention
surrounding Brian Clough because
it was his last home game. The other
memorable moment for me was it was
my outswinging corner which Gayley
(Brian Gayle) met for the second
goal into the far corner which really
sealed the win.
“We were playing well at this time,
and it came at a good time really
because we were up against it. After
the game, I was stuck for about three
hours because I was picked for the
drug testing, but I couldn’t go to the
toilet! I couldn’t go because it was so
hot, I was totally dehydrated! Luckily,
my missus was at the game, so I had a
lift home! It was a big game, and a big
three points.
“I have to say because Brian Clough
was the man he was, and he was
ending on a down really by getting
relegated, that was quite sad. Don’t
get me wrong, I was over the moon at
winning, that was a must, but it was a
bit subdued I have to say because of
what happened to Cloughie.”
United’s victory over Everton
was arguably just as impressive, as
Bassett’s side maintained a notable
record at Goodison which had seen the
Blades win on Merseyside for a third
year in a row.
Charlie added: “Beating Everton 2-0
at Goodison Park which was another
huge away win at the time. Those two
results basically ensured we stayed
up, so avoiding a very nervy finish on
the last game.
“Thankfully, it didn’t go to the wire. It
was a great result at Everton, that was
another game I remember really well
because I had to have three stitches
in my head after a clash with Peter
Beardsley! He elbowed me in the back
of the head. That was nice to get the
win there, I should have scored actually
because Corky put me clean through,
but I knocked it wide.
“It was big season for me. Getting
into the team was good for me, I
knuckled down and enjoyed a good
run in the side. Injuries followed in the
next season, but at that time I really
improved, and I look back fondly on the
experience.”
WHAT HAPPENED
THE STATE OF PLAY…
An exciting title race, which
looked set to go to the wire
all season, petered out in the
end. Defeats for Villa against
Blackburn and Oldham, a result
which gave the latter a shot at
survival going into the final day,
handed the title to Manchester
United who had won six on the
bounce coming into the final
With just two games left in
this thrilling Championship
season, a host of clubs are
still eyeing up play-off places and
Preston arrive at Bramall Lane
with their hopes very much alive.
Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against
Blackburn was not the result
Preston boss Ryan Lowe and his
players were hoping for, but their
last gasp equaliser kept their
hopes of a top six finish alive and
now they have to push for a victory
against the Blades today.
Preston’s hugely impressive
away record has been a foundation
for their promotion push this
season, with their 10 wins on the
road only bettered by the top three
teams in the Championship.
Now they are looking to add
another victory and after the
Lilywhites have lost their last two
away matches against Millwall
and Swansea, they have reached
the point in the campaign where
nothing less than three points will
do this afternoon.
With former Sheffield United
striker Ched Evans out of
action for the rest of this
season, goals need to come from
other players in the Preston squad
today and Cannon has a big role to
play in the final third.
At the age of 20, Merseysideborn
Cannon has been capped by
the Republic of Ireland at under-21
level and he has relished the chance
to prove his worth as a first team
performer during a loan spell from
Everton.
Tom CANNON
DATE OF BIRTH: 28/12/02
Cannon has taken the chance to
prove he is ready for first team duty
with some fine performances in
Preston colours and his performances
have earned praise from boss
Ryan Lowe.
“Tom is just relishing it and every
opportunity he gets with us, he
absolutely loves it and adores it,” said
Lowe. “Ultimately, he is not our player,
but we’d love to potentially take Tom
back again next season.
“There will probably now be another
20 Championship clubs who’ll want
to do the same thing and I don’t think
there is much loyalty in football, but
let’s see what is possible.
“All we can do is do our best with
him, and if there’s an opportunity for
him to come back then we’ll definitely
be open to it.”
Cannon has made two Premier
League appearances for his parent
club Everton and has fired eight
goals in 18 appearances since
moving to Preston in the January
transfer window.

THE LOWDOWN...
...on Preston North End
Each week UTB takes an alternative look over our opponents...
THE EARLY BEGINNINGS
Originally a cricket club,
Preston has been based at
Deepdale since 1875. The
club first took up football
in 1878 as a winter fitness
activity and decided to
focus on it in May 1880,
when the football club was
officially founded.
TOM AND BILL
The club’s most famous
players have been
NUMBER 35
Tom Finney and Bill
Shankly, who are both
commemorated at
Deepdale by stands
named after them.
THE INVINCIBLES
Preston were the first team
to achieve the ‘double’ in
English football and, as
they were unbeaten in all
matches, are remembered
as ‘The Invincibles’.
Preston won the title again
David Nugent became the first PNE player
since Sir Tom Finney to represent England,
when he came on as a substitute in the friendly
against Andorra and scored in injury time to
help England to a 3-0 win in March 2007.
UTB 79
in 1889-90 but their only
major success since then
has been their 1938 FA
Cup Final victory over
Huddersfield Town.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS
After Gary Peters’
resignation in January
1998, David Moyes took
over as manager and in his
first full season in charge
he led the club to its
highest league finish since
the 1980-81 season, only
losing out to Gillingham
in the Play-Offs. The
following season, David
went one better as he
guided PNE to the Division
Two title, and a place in
the second tier for the first
time in 20 years.

A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURE:
In the event of any emergency you will hear a safety message
over the PA system. Remain where you are and listen carefully to
the announcement. Comply immediately if it affects your area.
Stewards, Police Officers and Officials will direct you to safe areas,
which may be through Exit Doors/Gates to the street or on to the
playing area. If you are disabled or feel unsafe in a large crowd,
remain where you are until stewards assist you. Remain calm
and do not move unless the announcement affects your area.
