Tim Shaw (b. 1964)Tim Shaw RA’s sculpture is often dualistic,incorporating current affairs, societalcomplexity and human conflict withancient, mythical, metaphysical and primalconcerns. Shaw’s powerful oeuvre connectsthese elements to create wider, timelessportraits of humanity. The tension betweenancient past and a prosaic presence,between solidity and breakdown, becomesan organic part of his worldview, whetherhe’s looking at human transgression or theenlightenment of primitive ritual.Shaw is a British artist, born in Belfast, hecurrently lives in Cornwall. He was electedan Academician at The Royal Academyin 2013 and made a Fellow of The RoyalBritish Society of Sculptors and a Fellowof Falmouth University the same year.Shaw has had a number of significant soloshows throughout the UK, Ireland andinternationally. Most recently the majorpublic solo exhibitions ‘What Remains’and ‘Something is Not Quite Right’ acollaboration between The Exchange andAnima-Mundi, ‘Mother the Air is Blue,The Air is Dangerous’ was held in the F.EMcWilliam Gallery in Northern Ireland,‘Black Smoke Rising’ toured from MacBirmingham to Aberystwyth Arts Centreand Back From the Front presents: Shockand Awe – Contemporary Artists at Warand Peace at the Royal West of EnglandAcademy. He has undertaken a number ofpublic commissions including ‘The Ritesof Dionysus’ for The Eden Project, ‘TheMinotaur’ for The Royal Opera House and‘The Drummer’ for Lemon Quay, Truro.A more political side to his work becameevident in a number of sculptures respondingto the issues of terrorism and The Iraq War.‘Tank on Fire’ was awarded the selectorsprize at the inaugural Threadneedle Prizein 2008 and the installation ‘Casting aDark Democracy’ was reviewed in 2008by Jackie Wullschlager of The FinancialTimes as ‘The most politically chargedyet poetically resonant new work on showin London’. Shaw has been supported bythe Kappatos Athens Art Residency, TheKenneth Armitage Foundation, The BritishSchool of Athens,The Delfina Studio Trustthrough residencies in Greece, Spain and afellowship in London.
