Controlling E
Field results have proven that Pointer Insecticide is an
exceptionally effective, reliable way to protect Ash trees from
the devastation caused by Emerald Ash Borers. Pointer can
protect healthy trees from EAB infestations. It can also save
and GARDENS
trees already infested, if treated soon enough.
What is Pointer Insecticide?
Pointer is an imidicloprid formulation manufactured by
ArborSystems. Pointer is applied with the ArborSystems
Wedgle ® Direct-Inject Tree Treatment System, an easy, fast
and tree-friendly way to treat trees that protects the trees’
health and prevents long-term DIRECT-INJECT
wounding.

How does Pointer kill EAB?
EMERALD ASH BORER
The Direct-Inject method injects chemical directly to where
EAB larva are feeding, quickly killing larva and preventing
damage. The damage caused by feeding larva is what kills
the tree. The chemical also spreads throughout the tree to
the branches and leaves, where it kills leaf-feeding adults.

ASK
THE
PASTOR
By Pastor
Mark Kluzek
St. Johns Lutheran
Church, Kiron and
Faith, Deloit
Are We Better
Together?
Covid isolated us, our indulgence in the
internet also isolates us. We also can have
a sense of pride that we don’t need anyone
else. Yet we see in the Bible that God wants
us to work together as His Church. He says
an amazing thing in Matthew 18:20: “Where
two or three are gathered in My name, there
am I among them.” Jesus is with us as we
come together in His Name! The God of the
universe thinks it is important enough for Him
to be present as Christians gather together!
Yet at the same time many do not think they
need their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
They are too busy! Are their priorities correct?
Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of
God and his righteousness, and all these
things will be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33)
Church is important to God. Is it to you?
The views expressed are those of the author and
not necessarily this newspaper.
This column is open to all Christian pastors in our area. Just
ask your pastor to email Pastor Kluzek. You can also email him
questions. Godcares1000@gmail.com

#512 One Voice Of Many….by Gregg K. Knowles

The 2024 election
is going to be a circus
President Biden announced last week that
he will run for re-election next year and as his
most likely opponent Donald Trump is doing,
begun to buy television time to convince us that
he is the man. This comes after the historically
most expensive mid-term election in terms
of dollars spent on advertising. I am sure the
upcoming election will put that one to shame
in the advertising department, and I do not look
forward to those intrusions into my life.
The mudslinging is always bad in elections
these days, but when you bring Donald Trump
into the picture, it goes off the chart. As soon as
Mr. Biden announced his intentions, Mr. Trump
made the impossible-to-quantify assertion that “if
you combine all five of the worst presidents this
nation has had, they don’t come close to doing
the damage to our country that Joe Biden has.”
Both parties accuse the other of taking away our
liberties and rights…which is essentially true…
or of protecting our liberties and rights…which
is also essentially true. The rub is the two parties
can’t agree on which ones to protect.
Two other Democrats have announced they
are also running for the White House, and on
the Republican side, there are more than half a
dozen. The noise level just went past the decibels
of a sonic boom.
Mr. Biden’s age is a concern. He will be 82
at the end of his current term. More than half his
own party do not want him to run for various
reasons, but his age is a big one. He, of course,
shrugs the criticism off.
A friend of mine sent me an email this
past week with the following points which are
germane to this coming election (and the world
we live in today). I can’t say that I disagree with
them:
• Why is it when archaeologists find human
remains, they always determine that they are
either male or female and none of the other
many of genders?
• From Bill Maher—If kids knew what they
wanted to be at age eight, the world would be
filled with cowboys and princesses. I wanted
to be a pirate. Thank goodness nobody took
me seriously and scheduled me for eye
removal and peg-leg surgery.
• Why is it that so many are more outraged
that Brittney Griner was stuck in Russia than
they were about Americans being stranded in
Afghanistan?
• Why were we told to lower our AC usage on
hot days to prevent overwhelming the electric
grid while simultaneously being told to trade
in our gas cars for electric vehicles?
• Why is canceling student debt a good idea?
Does it make sense to reward people who
do not honor their financial commitment by
taxing the people who do?
• Does it make sense to cut off oil from an ally
and buy it from an enemy who calls for your
death?
• Eliminating the production of 500,000
American barrels of oil a day to buy 500,000
barrels a day from Russia is simply…well…
stupid.
• Are we living in a time where intelligent
people are silenced so that stupid people
won’t be offended?
• I saw a movie where only the police and
military had guns; it was called Schindler’s
List.
• Why are we running out of money for Social
Security and Medicare and not for welfare,
illegals and free college?
• If an 18-year-old isn’t mature enough to own
a firearm, then maybe five-year-olds aren’t
mature enough to change their gender
• Nobody called it “Toxic Masculinity” when
we were saving the world.
• Mice die in mouse traps because they do not
understand why the cheese is free, just like
socialism.
• The most powerful governments on earth
can’t stop a virus from spreading but they say
they can change the earth’s temperature if
you pay more taxes.
• Want to stop drunk drivers from killing
sober drivers? Ban sober drivers from
driving. That’s how gun control and COVID
lockdowns work.
Who you gonna vote for?

Our community
lost a wonderful soul
last week, a person
whom I am proud and
honored to have been
able to call my friend.
We are all different
in our own ways,
but this woman was
exceptional.
Virginia Hagemann of Carroll died on
Sunday, April 23rd after dealing with several
months of health issues we all hoped she would
beat. She was 87 years old.
She and her husband of almost 66 years,
Hubert, are well-known not only in the Carroll
area but around Iowa and the Midwest as they
have been very active in farming and political
matters for many years. Virginia had a career
as a nurse before she devoted all her time to her
family and her fellow citizens.
When she would walk into a government
meeting, elected officials paid attention. She
could grill politicians with the best of them and
back up her questions with facts. Despite her
intense civic-minded ways, I have never run into
an officeholder who did not respect her.
She loved to use humor in her conversations
and her favorite response to the question of how
she was doing was, “I’m as fine as the hair on a
frog’s back.” I always appreciated her interest in
my well-being, which was that nursing thing in
her coming out.
She was very proud of her children; all
three of their daughters hold doctorates. Over
the years, Virginia volunteered thousands of
hours of her time to 4-H (she was a leader for
over 50 years and inducted into its Hall of Fame
in 2013) and served as a judge at county fairs
including Clay County and the Iowa State Fair.
She served on the Carroll County Extension
Council and was a dedicated member of the St.
Anthony Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member
of the Women’s League of Voters, the Carroll
Republican Women, and the Carroll County
Republican Central Committee. I often wondered
when she found time to sleep.
Virginia set a tremendous example of what a
good mother, wife, and citizen should look like.
Unfortunately, there won’t be many more like
her. She will be greatly missed but not forgotten.

To the editor:
I believe we are at a crossroads in politics in
the United States. Donald Trump appears to be
the frontrunner for the Republican Party, boosted
by the gun-supporting right of the party. They
seem to like his take-charge attitude and his
ability to “color outside the lines.”
Well, I’m not a fan of his attitudes. The
first time I voted for him because he wasn’t an
insider and he had good policies; the second
time I pinched my nose and voted against the
opposition, but I will never vote for him again.
He is constantly surrounded by attorneys trying
to skirt the law. I don’t like his personality, his
bullying, his grumpy look and his unsettling
leadership. The American public is divided and
on edge enough without our leadership “stirring
the pot.” Here’s what I think will happen:
Trump will win the nomination, but his
inability to win the independent voter will lose
the election to the Democrat. (In the mid-term
election, most of whom he campaigned for lost.)
So with the Democrats in control of the House
of Representatives and if they gain control of
the Senate and White House, gun control will be
passed into law in one form or another.
The court system will be the center of
attention and there should be a lot of demand for
lawyers.
The unrest in the United States will continue
and I think gun restrictions will be inevitable.

Dear Gregg,
First let me commend you for printing the
last two pages of this week’s Direct Mailer.
These were the most thought provoking two
pages I have read anywhere for a long time.
These two pages either addressed or mentioned
most of the serious problems confronting our
nation today.
I am speaking of your editorial concerning
AI, Pastor Jonathon Conner’s concise
explanation of the harm caused to our young
people by social media (which I now consider
as anti-social media), Larry Peterson’s probably

think this also applies to: Think before you
write, publish or broadcast or invent. Every
action, every decision has consequences,
some intended and some unpredictable.
Usually the unpredictable are the problem
causers. This point applies to access to
smartphones by young people and the
problems with AI you pointed out.
2. Mr. Peterson stated that abortion has no place
in a discussion about gun violence. He is
wrong! Abortion and gun violence are both
manifestations of the same problem with
the thinking processes of the perpetrators.
If it is alright to kill an unborn person, how
wrong can it be to kill a born person? Which
is the greater crime, to murder an adult with
perhaps 30 years of life ahead of them, or
to murder an unborn child with perhaps
80 years of life ahead of them? God says
both are a sin. Pastor Connor explained that
because of addiction to social media, our
young peoples’ brains are not developing
normally. If this is not a catastrophic problem
for our society, what is? When you add in the
easy access to pornography and violent video
games and the proven fact that many leaders
in media, government, and sports have no
moral compass and that many educators think
their job is to indoctrinate children rather
than teach them how to think for themselves
it is not a rosy future ahead of us. The Second
Amendment was placed in the Constitution
with the assumption that the people who will
arm themselves are responsible, law-abiding,
informed citizens. None of our Constitution
is designed for a nation of self-centered, selfabsorbed,
amoral dunces.
3. AI (artificial intelligence) is not an answer to
the world’s problems. It is a crutch for people
who are too lazy or miseducated to use their
own intelligence.
4. If Pastor Connor is correct in his assessment
of the social media addiction of our youth,
and I believe he is, we will become a nation
of developmentally disabled people. Who
will we vote for? Whoever promises us the
most desired short term benefits perhaps?
Look at our federal government today. Are
we already there? Has allowing 18 year olds
to vote given us a better government? I think
not.
With the points I have already made: if Mr.
Peterson thinks gun violence is bad today, I have
a warning for him. You ain’t seen nothing yet!
Sincerely,
Gary F. Thomsen
