Minister Mr Bhupinder Singh
Hooda today said that ‘the
Father of the Nation’
Mahatma Gandhi was the
greatest personality born in
the present and the previous
century.
Gandhi ji not only got the
country its independence but
also played a vital role in
motivating other countries’
independence struggles and
the credit of liberalising other
countries also goes to him, he
added while addressing a well
attended ‘Aggar Mahakumbh‘
in Karnal today. The
convention was organized by
the Haryana state unit of All
and attended by thousands of
people belonging to the
Aggarwal Community.
Lauding the role and
contribution of the
Aggarwal community in the
national freedom struggle,
Mr. Hooda said that the
community has a proud
history and it contributed in
the struggle waged by
Maharana Partap, 1857
revolution and the freedom
struggle till 1947. He said
that Bhama Shah had helped
Maharana Partap in his days
of struggle. He also recalled
the sacrifices and
contribution of Mr.
Ghansham Dass Birla, Mr.
Jamna Lal Bajaj and Lala
his family relations with the
Delhi blast probe widens,
New Delhi, Agencies :
Investigators probing the Delhi
High Court blast have asked
foreign intelligence agencies
operating in Southeast Asia if
they have picked up any
signal or communication
which may provide links to
the Wednesday’s terror attack.
Official sources said today
that the investigators were in
regular touch with foreign
agencies, particularly of the
United States, to get any
information related to the blast,
including whether it was
carried out by any homegrown
terror outfit having links
across the border or by
terrorists based in
neighbouring countries.
Lala Lajpat Rai’s family.
While describing the
Aggarwal community as the
“Karamveer” (laborious)
people, Mr. Hooda said that
with its hard work and
wisdom this community has
attained distinction at the
national and international
level, but had not forgotten
their roots and their place of
birth. They have great sense
of social service and setup
schools, dharamshalas in
their native villages, he
added.
While referring to the tradition
of one brick and one gold
coin, Mr. Hooda paid rich
tributes to the Maharaja
Aggersain and his vision of
democracy, socialism and
mutual brotherhood. He said
that Maharaja Aggersain had
started a new era of
awakening and cultural
heritage. While referring to the
story of the selection of
Agroha as the capital by
Maharaja Aggersain where
he found the kids of tiger and
wolf playing together, Mr.
American dream -- e pluribus
Mr. Obama said these 10
years have shown that
Americans hold fast to their
Mr. Obama said when
5. He is
supporting a cause,
the amendment of
a law to curb
corruption in India.
6. How that can
be possible? He is
advocating for a
Bill, The Lok Pal
Bill (The Citizen
Ombudsman
Bill), that will
form an
autonomous authority who will
make politicians (ministers),
bureaucrats (IAS/IPS)
accountable for their deeds.
7. It’s an entirely new thing
right..? In 1972, the bill was
proposed by then Law minister
Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then
it has been neglected by the
politicians and some are trying to
change the bill to suit their theft
second tenure in the current
Assembly), barely six months
ahead of the elections in this
hill State. He was removed by
the party after its humiliating
defeat in all five seats in the
2009 Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing journalists after
chairing a Cabinet meeting, Mr.
10-yr-old gives birth to
child at Faridkot
Faridkot/Mangla Media
News : A 10-year-old girl gave
birth to a child in Guru Gobind
Singh Medical College and
Hospital in Faridkot. The baby
was delivered by cesarean
section and the identity of the
father is not known yet. The
health of the baby is not
normal as it is a seven-month
premature baby.
The girl, who belongs to Sirsa
in Haryana and had shifted to
Ferozepur with her family six
months ago, was brought to
the medical college with a
complaint of acute pain.
The family members were
(corruption).
8. Oh.. He is
going on a hunger
strike for that
whole thing of
passing a Bill !
How can that be
possible in such a
short span of time?
The first thing he
is asking for is:
the govt should
come forward and
announce that the
bill is going to be
passed. Next, they make a
joint committee to DRAFT the
LOK PAL BILL. 50%
government participation and
50% public participation.
Bcoz u can’t trust the
government entirely for
making such a bill which does
not suit them.
9.What will happen when this
bill is passed? A LokPal will
Khanduri talked about
development and the BJP's
anti-corruption plank, and
senior leader L.K. Advani's
rath yatra in support of anticorruption
campaigner Anna
Hazare. He said he wanted
Uttarakhand to become a
vibrant State. So, he ordered all
his Cabinet colleagues and IAS
and IPS officers to declare
their assets within a month.
To a question, Mr. Khanduri
admitted that he did not have
any magic wand. “The time is
short, let us at least make an
attempt to achieve the
impossible.” The nation
wanted an end to corruption,
and the BJP was only
following its age-old tradition.
However, he parried a
question why the party kept
replacing Chief Ministers.
suspecting the pains due to
some tumour in the abdomen
of the girl and brought her
for treatment. Faridkot
police station incharge SHO
JJ Singh said after getting
the information from the
hospital authorities, the
police security was provided
around the room where the
girl was recuperating.
Dr Lajja, the doctor attending
the girl, said the condition of
the girl was out of danger.
The girl’s family suspect a 17year-old
boy of Sirsa for his
involvement in the crime as he
used to visit them often.
The more eco-friendly a
The green building concept,
which has appealed to
The CII Sohrabji Godrej
Rich cultural heritage of Kerala
comes out in its best form and
spirit during the ten day long
festival. It is indeed a treat to
be a part of the grand carnival.
People of Kerala make
elaborate preparations to
celebrate it in the best possible
manner.
The most impressive part of
Onam celebration is the grand
feast called Onasadya, prepared
on Thiruonam. It is a nine
Centre, says.
The system aims to provide
guidance to businesses on
how to implement ‘green’
strategies, based on an
interactive and consultative
process.
It envisages building
partnerships with stakeholders
ecological sustainability.
Companies can derive
numerous benefits out of
restructuring various business
processes in compliance with
the norms of the ‘green’
initiatives; in respect of energy
efficiency, and water and
industries that can be covered
are automobile and
more than 450 organisations in
the country. Businesses
consume energy for various
reasons, such as operating
machinery, running computers,
and office maintenance. The ‘
green’ rating system calls for an
energy monitoring and
accounting system and
technology that is less energy
intensive.
The green business rating
promotes sustainable use of
water through “reduce, recycle,
reuse, and reclaim” strategies. It
prescribes metering to monitor
water consumption, rainwater
harvesting, and water-use
reduction strategies. The
system encourages businesses
to employ clean and renewable
energy. The ultimate goal is to
offset 100 per cent of the
electrical and thermal energy by
renewable energy.
Lucrative option
Although the initial investment
on installing equipment for
generating renewable energy is
relatively high, the long-term
benefits of reduced
maintenance costs, low
operating costs, and cost
savings on fossil fuels will
make it a lucrative proposition.
Waste management is another
key area in the rating process.
Material conservation and
recycling are closely related to
waste management. By reusing
materials, there are definite
savings in costs, in the form of
reduced material costs.
The rating system promotes
reuse and recycling of raw
materials and discourages use
of virgin materials. It
encourages businesses to make
recyclable or biodegradable
products.
Carbon neutral
No politician or senior officer ever goes to jail despite
huge evidence because Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) and
CBI directly come under the government. Before starting
investigation or prosecution in any case, they have to take
permission from the same bosses, against whom the case
has to be investigated.
No corrupt officer is dismissed from the job because
Central Vigilance Commission, which is supposed to
dismiss corrupt officers, is only an advisory body.
Whenever it advises government to dismiss any senior
corrupt officer, its advice is never implemented.
No action is taken against corrupt judges because
permission is required from the Chief Justice of India to
even register an FIR against corrupt judges.
Nowhere to go - People expose corruption but no
action is taken on their complaints.
There is so much corruption within CBI and vigilance
departments. Their functioning is so secret that it
encourages corruption within these agencies.
Weak and corrupt people are appointed as heads of
anti-corruption agencies.
Citizens face harassment in government offices.
Sometimes they are forced to pay bribes. One can only
complaint to senior officers. No action is taken on
complaints because senior officers also get their cut.
Nothing in law to recover ill gotten wealth. A corrupt
person can come out of jail and enjoy that money.
corruption is minimum 6 months and maximum 7 years.
SC Panel for Ban on Karnataka mining
NEW DELHI/AGENCIES:
The Supreme Court's
environment panel, Central
Empowered Committee
(CEC), on Friday concurred
with the Karnataka Lokayukta
to report rampant illegal iron
ore mining in Chitradurga and
Tumkur districts and
recommended a complete ban
on private mining.
Submitting the CEC's report to
a bench of Chief Justice S H
Kapadia and Justices Aftab
Alam and Swatanter Kumar,
amicus curiae A D N Rao
said the adverse impact on
environment in these two
districts was identical to the
one witnessed in Bellary and
advocated controlled mining as
had been ordered by the apex
court in Bellary.
The court issued notice to the
Karnataka government and
sought its response within a
week to the CEC's
recommendation that mining
activity be completely banned
in these two districts before
putting in place an interim
arrangement on the lines of the
one in Bellary district, where
mining is done by public
sector undertakings meant to
meet the requirement of the
domestic steel industry.
"The CEC is of the view that
the level of illegality and
environmental degradation
caused by mining leases in
district Tumkur are in no way
less that that which has taken
place in district Bellary (even
though the level of production
is much less than Bellary)," it
said.
"The level of illegality and
environmental degradation is
relatively lesser in District
Chitradurga. However, here
also the situation is far from
satisfactory," the CEC said.
The environment impact report
was compiled by CEC
member secretary M K
Jiwrajika, who on the apex
court's July 29 directive
extensively toured the affected
areas of Chitradurga and
Tumkur along with other CEC
members.
The CEC reported heavy
damage to the already depleted
forest cover in Tumkur and
said: "Streams flowing from
the mines carry fine particles
into surrounding water bodies
and the agricultural fields, all
of which get polluted. This
along with air pollution has an
adverse impact on agriculture
and horticulture production
particularly as the area is
highly sensitive."
“PEGGS” Now a Reality
Mangla Media News (Sourc
Kuleep Kalsi) : A Rajpura
based company, Raja Farms
Pvt. Ltd, has come out with a
path-breaking new product.
Branded as “Punjab Eggs”
the product is slated to
revolutionize how modern day
Indians consume eggs.
“Peggs” is the name given to
eggs that are not the regular
ones laid in unhygienic and
smelly poultry farms, but are
produced in an environment
that is just the opposite –
totally clean, hygienic and
mechanically packed. The
innovative brand was launched
today in Chandigarh by Raja
Farms Pvt. Ltd.
The production technology
has been indigenized from
Europe. Under the technology,
standardized quality eggs are
delivered through the most
modern and hygienic process
of manufacturing. The facility
at Rajpura has a specialized
plant catering to the needs of
masses.
The birds are given special
care in a very clean
environment and are provided
nutritious feeds. Mr. Dhirendra
Kumar, who is a BVSC
graduate from Veterinary
College, Bangalore and has
over 20 years of experience in
the Industry, is part of the
core team at Raja Farms.
“Peggs” delivers eggs that are
of standardized quality and
weight and which have a high
nutritional value. These are
mechanically tested on
ultramodern machines thus
delivering consistently high
quality.” Adds Raja, “The
brand provides customer
satisfaction and helps
consumers to continue getting
the same quality on an
ongoing basis.”
Bhakra’s spillway
Chandigarh, September 11
The Bhakra Beas Management
Board (BBMB) today opened
the spillway gates of the
Bhakra dam following a heavy
inflow, which has taken the
water level in the dam to 1680
ft, the maximum level fixed by
the authorities.
This has been opposed by
former Bhakra designer GS
Dhillon as well as the All-
India Power Engineers
Association which claim the
level should be allowed to go
up till 1685 ft, which is the
dam’s filling capacity. BBMB
Chairman AB Agarwal told
The Tribune that the safe
operation of the dam was vital
and that the level would be
maintained at 1680 ft till the
end of the filling season on
September 20. This level was
enough for efficient
gates opened
management of the dam.
The dam authorities,
accordingly, had opened the
spillway gates and released a
small quantity of 4,000 cusecs.
The inflow today had been
recorded at 42,000 cusecs, he
said. The dam authorities had
informed the Punjab
Government that low floods
could occur at a few points,
he said. Meanwhile, Dhillon,
who was part of the team that
designed the Bhakra dam, said
the latter was designed to
store 1685 cusecs of water and
that reducing the same by 5 ft
would result in a “colossal”
loss to Punjab. Dhillon said
this would amount to
sacrificing 4 per cent of the
dam’s storage capacity and
would affect Punjab the most
as the state drew 51 per cent
of the water reserves of the
dam. All-India Power
Engineers Federation head
Padamjit Singh claimed the
full reservoir level was 1690 ft
and not 1680 ft. He said the
dam had been filled up to
1687.36 ft in 1975, 1685 ft in
1978, 1686 ft in 1983, 1687 ft
in 1988, 1682.5 ft in 1994 and
1683.49 ft in 1995. Padamjit
said with the monsoon
retreating in five days, the
opening of the spillway gates
was simply not justified. The
water level at the Pong dam
today was 2 ft below the
maximum level of 1390 ft,
receiving an inflow of 26976
cusecs.
At Ranjit Sagar dam in
Gurdaspur district, the water
level was far from the danger
mark at 524.40 metres against
the top level of metres.
12 Million People worldwide
diagnosed with cancer each year
LONDON/AGENCIES :
The number of new cancer
cases has soared by a fifth in
less than a decade and now
stands at 12 million a year,
according to new figures.
This is more than four times
the annual number of new
HIV infections.
The World Cancer Research
Fund (WCRF) said it believed
that 2.8 million cases of cancer
are linked to poor diet, lack of
exercise and being overweight
— a figure expected to rise
dramatically in the next decade.
The figures were released
ahead of a United Nations
meeting on diseases, including
cancer, later this month. The
WCRF said there was a “once
in a generation” opportunity to
reverse the trend.
"The truth is the number of
cases around the world is
going up partly because we
are an ageing population, but
also because of changes in
lifestyle,” Professor Martin
Wiseman, medical and
scientific adviser for WCRF,
told the BBC.
"As countries become more
urbanised, they become more
prone to the Western
diseases that we are used to
seeing. Not just cancers —
coronary heart disease,
diabetes, obesity and lung
diseases,” he added. Prof
Wiseman also warned that
many people were still
unaware that risk factors
such as alcohol and obesity
affect cancer risk.
Chandigarh/Mangla Media
News : Haryana Government
has decided to provide 40 per
cent subsidy on the total cost
for installing biogas plant at
the farm or at home to
generate electricity.
While stating this here today, a
spokesman of Renewable
Energy Department said that
any person could install bio
gas plant of 25 to 85 diameter
and set up small power
generation plant for producing
three KV to 250 KV of
electricity.
He said that bio gas plants
would prove very beneficial
for those having their own
dairies as they would be
having bio products like cow
dung needed to run bio gas
plants. Any entrepreneur could
also install these plants for
generating electricity for their
ventures. Those desirous of
installing bio gas plant could
apply to the office of
Additional Deputy
Mr. Hooda said when he
assumed office in the State the
total generation capacity of the
state was 1587 MW.
Therefore he set a target to
make additional generation of
5000 MW for which work
was started to set up four new
already started generation and
by this year end the Indira
News : The Haryana Chief
Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh
Hooda, today announced the
decision of the state
government to effect 20 per
cent increase in the
remuneration of guest teachers
in the state with effect from
July 1, 2011.
Coming as it does on the eve
of the Teachers Day, the
revision will benefit about
15,400 teachers. This is the
fourth hike in the
remunerations of guest
teachers effected by the Hooda
Government. It will cost the
state exchequer Rs 50 crore a
year. Giving out details, the
Education Minister, Mrs
would soon be implemented in
a better way. He said that the
delayed disbursement of Old
Age Samman Bhatta would be
made with interest by
September 15 as instructions
in this regard have been issued
to the concerned officers.
Haryana Cooperation
Minister, Mr. Satpal
Sangwan said that Mr.
principles of inventory
management, forecasting,
performance measurement, etc
to name a few.
Mr Sharma stated that in the
present day world of
globalization and cut throat
competition, one has to adopt
the best available practices to
emerge as a leader. Each and
every area associated with the
functioning of an organization
is of vital importance and
hence stores and inventories
also constitute an essential
ingredient which cannot be
ignored at any cost. Rather,
stores, warehouses, and
inventories acts as life giving
blood carrying arteries to the
whole system and hence these
Geeta Bhukkal, said that with
this increase, a lecturer would
now get Rs 19,400 per month
against Rs 16,200 per month;
masters and language teachers
Rs 15,840 per month against
Rs 13,200; and JBT/drawing
teachers Rs 14,400 per month
against Rs 12,000. “This will
help boost the morale of guest
teachers and motivate them to
improve teaching in schools”,
Mrs Bhukkal said.
This is the fourth time that the
Haryana Government has
hiked the remuneration of guest
teachers in the state. The first
increase was made on
1.1.2008, the second on
1.4.2009 and the third increase
was effected from 1.7.2010.
Hooda has implemented a
number of innovative
programmes and he was
confident that with the
continued support of the
people, Haryana would make
tremendous progress under
his leadership. Earlier, former
MLA Mr. Ranbir Singh
Mohindra welcomed the
Chief Minister.
CII Himachal Pradesh advocates for
sectors require special
attention and consideration.
The programme was designed
to cater to the needs of
industry in today’s economic
situation supporting their
initiatives of making
organization more competitive
by way of releasing capital
blocked in Inventories,
achieving cost reduction,
reducing response time to
customers and improving
customer satisfaction.
The workshop gradually
transformed into a highly
effective and educative
interactive session. The
workshop was well received
by over 65 delegates from
almost all industrial sectors.
20% Hike - A Great Gift Toward
Teachers : Chief Minister Hooda
“The decision to hike the
remuneration has been taken to
ensure adequate strength of
teachers for the 27.33-lakh
children studying in
government schools, to mitigate
the impact of rising inflation
and to improve the quality of
education”, Mrs Bhukkal said.
With a view to achieving the
objective of ensuring quality
education in Haryana, the state
government had decided in
2007 to fill up all vacant posts
by hiring guest faculty so that
students may benefit and their
studies do not suffer for want
of teachers. At present, there
are about 15,400 guest faculty
teachers in different categories
in the state.
Teachers Day –
Honouring Teachers
Teachers Day is celebrated as
a tribute to the valuable
contribution made by teachers
to the society by imparting
knowledge and enlightening
and shaping the career of
students. Celebration of
Teachers Day is fairly popular
in many countries across the
world and is even
acknowledged by UNESCO.
For students, Teachers Day is
an occasion to pay reverence
and gratitude to teachers for
their selfless effort in shaping
their career and enriching the
education system in the
process.
When is Teachers’ Day
celebrated? The date for
celebrating this special event
varies from country to
country across the world.
In India, Teachers Day
is celebrated on the 5th
of September every year,
whereas, China celebrates this
event on 10th September
every year. The celebration in
each country is generally
correlated to either significant
personalities or achievements
of milestone in the field of
education. India celebrates
Teachers Day on September 5
since 1962 as it is the birth
anniversary of Dr Sarvapalli
Radhakrishnan, a prominent
thinker, philosopher and an
educator.
Most of the schools and
institutions make elaborate
preparations for the
An American-style culture war
has broken out among British
academics and opinion-makers
over the underlying causes of
the recent riots in London and
other cities. While the political
class, despite attempting to
sound “different,” is broadly
on the same sheet, the
intellectuals are deeply divided
with those on the Right
suggesting that there was a
racial dimension to Britain's
worst street violence since the
1980s because most of the
rioters came from a particular
ethnic group.
Some have blamed elements
of Afro-Caribbean culture such
as rap music for contributing
to a streak of violence and
“nihilism” among black youth.
A “collapse of family values”
and a “lack of work ethic” are
some of the other factors cited
by right-wing commentators
for “restlessness” among the
young of Afro-Caribbean
descent.
Those on the Left reject this
racial stereotyping of a whole
community arguing that many
of these problems are also
prevalent among other groups,
including white working class
families. Instead of looking for
glib explanations in race and
ethnicity the debate should be
about “difficult” social and
economic issues — racial
discrimination and a neglect of
inner-city working class
communities — facing
Britain's black community.
Both sides acknowledge that
there is a dearth of enough role
models for black youth to look
up to and this has resulted in
a lack of aspiration among
them. But they differ on why
there is such a scarcity of
high-profile public figures of
Afro-Caribbean origin. The
Right puts it down to an
“inherent aspiration-deficit”
among blacks while the liberal
view is that it is a lack of
opportunities — a “racial glass
ceiling” that prevents black
people from getting a break in
the first place; and, even if
they do, hinders further
progress up the professional
ladder. They are grossly
DR. RADHAKRISHNAN
celebrations. The ceremony
usually kicks off with a warm
Teachers Day speech paying
respect and thanking teachers
EDITOR’S DESK
for their contribution. This is
often followed by a range of
colourful cultural programs,
feast and other activities which
make the event special and
memorable.
A few traditional ways of
celebrating the event include
presenting colourful flowers,
beautiful Teachers Day cards
or gifts to the teacher as
tokens of love and admiration.
But students often try
innovative ways and ideas to
celebrate Teachers Day.
Some rely on creative and
attractive Teachers Day
under-represented in nearly
every area of public life from
politics to media, academia,
and arts and culture.
The most controversial
intervention on the Right came
from historian and broadcaster,
David Starkey, a colourful
figure and a favourite of
television producers. His
attempt to import race into the
debate has been likened to the
behaviour of a “blustering old
fogey” gatecrashing into a
party where until he arrived
everyone has been at their best
etiquette.
Before Dr. Starkey's
provocative intervention, the
causes of the August riots had
been discussed in the context
of social and economic
deprivation in the Afro-
Caribbean community, with
even the Tories avoiding a
direct reference to race. Prime
Minister David Cameron, who
has been attacked for some of
his shrill post-riots rhetoric,
was careful not to be seen to
be singling out and
“criminalising” an entire
community for the actions of a
few. Suddenly, Dr Starkey
popped up on the BBC to
launch an attack on “a violent,
destructive and nihilistic” black
culture. The contagion, he
warned, was spreading with
members of the white working
class embracing this culture.
“The whites have become
black,” he declared with his
trademark dramatic flourish.
In what one critic dubbed his
“career-ending moment,” the
former Cambridge academic
approvingly quoted the late
Tory politician Enoch Powell's
1968 speech warning that
unchecked immigration would
unleash “rivers of blood” in
Britain. He said he had reread
the speech in the light of the
riots and found that Powell
had been “absolutely right.”
“His prophecy was absolutely
right in one sense. The Tiber
didn't foam with blood but
flames lambent. They wrapped
around Tottenham and around
Clapham,” he said. Gesturing
towards his co-panelist Owen
Jones, author of Chavs: the
greeting cards adorned with
captivating and touchy quotes
and messages to convey the
indebtedness unfailingly and
also to capture the wonderful
moments of the event. Others
select lovely and popular
Teachers Day quotes to
convey their inner feeling of
love for their teacher.
Sending animated or egreeting
card is also a rage in
the contemporary times.
Available absolutely free of
cost, these Teachers Day
Greetings e-cards have
become a preferred way to
send warm wishes and
shower emotions on teachers.
Another modern and
popular mode of wishing
teachers today is the
Teachers Day SMS.
The advantage of
sending SMS is that
the message reaches
its destination promptly and
rarely goes unnoticed. For the
celebration of Teachers Day,
the text messages are available
in varied languages allowing
users to send SMS according
to his/her preferred language.
All of us have been students
at some stage of our life and
have benefited from our
teachers. Celebration of
Teachers Day 2011 is a
wonderful opportunity
especially for all of us to show
our gratitude and appreciation
to our teachers.
Ajay Gupta
Demonisation of the Working
Classes, he said: “What has
happened is that a substantial
section of the chavs that you
wrote about have become
black.” “The whites have
become black. A particular
sort of violent, destructive,
nihilistic, gangster culture has
become the fashion. And
black and white, boy and girl,
operate in this language
together, this language which
is wholly false, which is this
Jamaican patois that's been
intruded in England, and this
is why so many of us have
this sense of literally a foreign
country,” he said. Undeterred
by Mr. Jones's protest that he
was “equating black culture
with criminality and anti-social
behaviour,” Dr. Starkey went
on to argue that “an archetypal
Even as you reserve your seat
for “Aarakshan”, Amitabh
Bachchan rewinds to his
rewarding association with
the camera.
“Aarakshan” is attracting all
sorts of controversies but the
man who is the centre of
attraction in this Prakash Jha
film doesn’t want to get
embroiled in any one of them.
As always, Amitabh Bachchan
diplomatically sidesteps queries
that require him to take a
stand. Perhaps he has burnt
his fingers too many times
with a section of the media that
thrives on ‘cut-and-paste’ job
or he simply wants to reserve
his voice for his blog.
Sitting at the Eau de Monsoon
restaurant of Le Meridien hotel
in New Delhi, he calls
“Aarakshan” his first issuebased
film. One reminds him
of his little known film “Main
Azaad Hoon”, where the
protagonist Azaad jumped off
a high-rise building to protest
against corrupt ways of the
establishment. “It was more
incident- or one can say eventbased.”
He has been shying
away from sharing his
personal take on the
Division of the Embassy of
developing a programme called
“Indian Himalayas Climate
Adaptation Programme”
(IHCAP). The overall goal of
this programme was to
strengthen the resilience of
vulnerable communities and
the knowledge and capacities
of research institutions and
decisions makers. In this
connection a one day
consultation workshop for
NGOs of HP was held on
27th August 2011 at YMCA,
The Ridge, Shimla. The
proposed consultation was to
have an idea on how the
community perceives the
climate change impact in
Himachal Pradesh and what
are the prominent needs for
climate change adaptation in
the region. The participants
included experts from CEE-
Himalaya & CART-India,
academicians, environmental &
social experts, community
based NGOs and other
environmental activists from
the region. The inauguration
of the workshop was done by
successful black man” was
more likely to sound like a
white person. Referring to the
Afro-Caribbean Labour MP
for Tottenham, David Lammy,
he said: “Listen to David
Lammy, an archetypal
successful black man. If you
turn the screen off so that you
are listening to him on radio
you would think he was
white.”
Well-known black writer and
education adviser Dreda Sally
Mitchell, a guest on the
programme, told him to “stop
talking about them and us.”
“You keep talking David about
black culture. Black
communities are not
homogenous. So there are
black cultures. Lots of different
black cultures. What we need
to be doing is ... thinking about
GAZE OF GREATNESS
reservation issue. “No, I have
clearly said that I believe in
equal opportunity.” There is
talk about social reservation
giving way to economic
reservation? “The debate is
going on not only in the
society but also at the
ministerial level and in the
Parliamentary committees.
Let’s see what comes out it.
As of now after the Supreme
Court judgement reservation is
a constitutional reality and we
have to live with it.”
Then what does the film have
to add? “It brings out various
things which have arisen out
of reservation like the
commercialisation of education.
Anjum (Rajabali) and Prakash
have come up with a balanced
screenplay which gives voice
to different concerns expressed
by different sections.” Was
reservation a talking point
when he came to Delhi to
study? “I came to the University
in 1958. It was not there and
we never talked about it.”
Other dignitaries included Sh.
Ghuman Singh, local
Environmentalists.
This workshop is an effort in
the direction to address the
issues relating to climate
change impact and adaptation
measures being taken or
needed in the present scenario.
As is well known that the
climate change in the
Himalayan region is now
quite visible and its early
impacts are realized by the
local communities too. The
increase in frequency and
intensity of extreme weather
events and natural hazards in
mountain regions is noticeable.
These changes might result in
multiple impacts on
livelihoods water availability
and the food security of the
mountain community as well
as downstream. Nearly 80%
of the people living in the
mountain region rely on
natural resources for their
livelihood, making them
vulnerable to variability in
climate, cropping pattern shifts,
uncertain crop productivity,
reduced water availability and
shifts in tree line.
During the workshop Dr
Abdesh Gangwar, Regional
Director, CEE-Himalaya gave
ourselves not as individual
communities ... as one
community. We need to stop
talking about them and us.”
The big backlash, however,
came from his own
professional community. More
than 100 academics and
graduate students signed an
open letter in The Times
Higher Education Magazine
denouncing his comments as
“evidentially insupportable and
factually wrong.” Dr. Starkey
was guilty of “crass
generalisations about black
culture and white culture as
oppositional, monolithic
entities” and his remarks
demonstrated a failure “to
grasp the subtleties of race
and class that would disgrace
a first-year history
undergraduate.”
irrespective of caste and
economic status. Considering
his father, Harivansh Rai
Bachchan, was also an eminent
teacher, a man of steely resolve,
while playing Prabhakar Anand
did he go back in time?
“Something that you have lived
with or experienced remains in
your mind. We don’t
deliberately go out looking for
that particular phase or moment.
Yes, if somewhere during the
course of performance it comes
out it is but natural, like the
importance he used to give to
discipline and student-teacher
interaction,” says the actor who
C M Y K
detailed objectives of this
programme. He told that
Swiss Development
Corporation (SDC) was reorganised
and renamed as
Climate Change Development
(CCD). All people are facing
impacts of climate changes.
Govt. Of Switzerland is
developing a programme on
Indian Himalaya Climate
Adaptation Programme
(IHCAP). This will involve
three aspects:
Research and development
(will be implement by
Department of Science &
Technology)
Culture wars over London riots
At the street level and in the
media, some of the reaction to
Dr. Starkey's outburst shows
that old racial prejudices still
lurk under the veneer of
multiculturalism and Britain
remains a deeply divided
society in its attitude to race.
There is no dearth of those
who believe that he spoke for
them and said what they
couldn't for fear of being
labelled as racist.
Writing in the Sunday
Telegraph, writer and
broadcaster James Delingpole
claimed that Dr. Starkey's
argument was “indisputable.”
“Listen to how many white
kids (and Asian kids) choose
to speak in black street patois;
note the extent to which hip
hop and grime garage and
their offshoots have penetrated
has played a teacher twice
before, in “Chupke Chupke”
and “Mohabbatein”. The
presence of Anand Kumar of
Super 30 fame was noted on
the sets. Bachchan clarifies that
he came to know about Anand
Kumar much later but Jha knew
him. “As I play a Maths teacher
in the film his help was sought
to get the exact way a maths
teacher writes formulae and
equations on the blackboard. So
Prakash used to interact with
him and then he used to pass
on the information to us. I did
Maths in college but I don’t
remember anything!” Finally a
Policies analysis
Community voices
The main objective of this
programme is to collect the
voices of communities, to
identify the susceptible regions
and to document the facts.
Detailed proposal will be
prepared after collecting views
of communities. These will
focus on success stories and
case studies in Himalayan
region.
Dr Khalid Hasan khan, Zonal
Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra
Sangthan told that climate
change is a global problem.
The main reasons of change
the white mainstream; check
out how many white kids like
to roll …with their Calvins
pulled up to their midriffs and
their jean waistbands sagging
…,” he wrote.
Not done yet, Mr. Delingpole
concluded: “To pillory a man
for pointing out such a
glaringly obvious cultural fact
just because he's white and
Right-wing would have been
quite wrong even before the
riots. Post riots it is positively
obscene.”
Outside the more doctrinaire
Left-Right divide, there's the
view that too many
sensitivities around issues
such as race, religions and
immigration often hinder a
rational debate on genuine
problems of ethnic groups. Dr.
Starkey's views may have
smile surfaces on his face as he
sips warm water to keep the
momentum going on a day
marked by back-to-back
interviews.
Many in the industry feel he
didn’t experiment enough
during his prime. “I agree but
I didn’t get the opportunity.”
He says the commercial aspect
of cinema of those days was
such that it didn’t allow him
to break free from a certain set
of filmmakers. Now it seems
there are no full stops. Each
week he is offered something
special. The latest being him
playing Tagore. “I would love
to but there is no concrete
proposal as of now.” Was he
once not offered the role of
Mirza Ghalib! “Yes, I did get
the offer very early in my
career but it didn’t work out.”
Having spent more than four
decades in the industry, one is
keen to know his evolving
relationship with the camera.
“Every day is a terrible task,”
he says and takes a pause.
“You cannot take everything
for granted. Every day I am
apprehensive before facing the
camera, how it is going to turn
out. Sometimes I rehearse
Page 4
Dr R.K. Sood told that it is
Diet rich in protein, dairy
products could help lose belly fat
A higher-protein, lowercarbohydrate
energy-restricted
diet has a major positive
impact on body composition,
trimming belly fat and
increasing lean muscle,
particularly when the proteins
come from dairy products,
according to a new research.
The study compared three
groups of overweight and
obese, but otherwise healthy,
premenopausal women. Each
consumed either low, medium
or high amounts of dairy
foods coupled with higher or
lower amounts of protein and
carbohydrates.
The women exercised seven
days per week for four
months, a routine that included
five days of aerobic exercise
and two days of circuit
weightlifting.
The researchers said that there
were identical total weight
losses among the groups, but
the higher-protein, high-dairy
group experienced greater
whole-body fat and abdomen
fat losses, greater lean mass
gains and greater increases in
strength.
According to the researchers,
the tissue composition,
exclusively fat, of the weight
the women lost has profound
implications for longer-term
health.
“One hundred per cent of the
weight lost in the higherprotein,
high-dairy group was
fat. And the participants gained
muscle mass, which is a
major change in body
composition,” said Andrea
Josse, lead author of the study
and a graduate student in the
Department of Kinesiology at
McMaster University.
“The preservation or even gain
of muscle is very important
for maintaining metabolic rate
and preventing weight regain,
which can be major problem
for many seeking to lose
weight,” added Ms. Josse.
Researchers found the lowerprotein,
low-dairy group lost
about a pound and half of
Want a long and healthy life?
Don’t just plod, but go for
short stints of intense exercise
daily, says a new study.
Researchers in Denmark have
found that intense workouts
for shorter periods daily are
better for the heart and could
add up to an extra five years
to someone’s life, the latest
edition of the ‘Hypertension’
journal reported.
The Danish study by
Bispebjerg University Hospital
adds to evidence that moderate
exertion, while clearly
beneficial, might not be all that
is needed to give the best level
of protection against cardio
vascular disease.
The researchers who
monitored the health of 5,000
muscle whereas the lowerprotein,
medium dairy group
lost almost no muscle. In
marked contrast, the higherprotein,
high-dairy group
actually gained a pound and
half of muscle, representing a
three-pound difference
between the low- and highdairy
groups.
On top of the muscle mass
differences, the higher-protein,
high-dairy group lost twice as
much belly fat than the lower-
Danish people in Copenhagen,
who cycled regularly for 20
years, found that most benefit
was gained from pedalling
intensively for short periods.
Men who said they rode fast
could expect to live 5.3 years
longer than those who said
they rode slowly, while for
such women the figure was
3.9 years, the findings
revealed.
Men who believed they rode
at an average speed could
expect another 2.9 years of life,
and such women 2.2 years.
“It is the intensity, not the
duration, of cycling that is of
the greatest importance in
relation to all forms of
mortality, or longevity, and it
Probiotic bugs may help
treat depression : scientists
Scientists have identified a
type of gut bacteria that can
directly influences the brain, a
finding they say could lead to
new ways to control
depression and other
psychiatric disorders.
Researchers have long
suspected that the gut was
somehow linked with the brain,
since bowel disorders are linked
with stress-related psychiatric
disorders such as anxiety and
depression in people.
To learn more, a team at the
University College Cork in
Ireland fed laboratory mice
with Lactobacillus rhamnosus
JB-1, a bug that naturally lives
in human gut.
The researchers found that the
mice, which were given the
bug-laced broth, displayed
significantly less behaviour
linked with stress, anxiety and
depression than mice fed plain
broth.
Bacteria-fed mice also had
significantly lower levels of the
stress hormone corticosterone
in response to stressful
situations such as mazes,
LiveScience reported. As mice
serve as good models for
understanding aspects of the
human brain, the findings can
be replicated in humans too,
the researchers said.
“By affecting gut bacteria, you
can have very robust and quite
broad—spectrum effects on
brain chemistry and
Oats, nuts can help
reduce cholesterol
Worried about your
cholesterol? Make sure you eat
plenty of oats and nuts rather
than just avoiding fatty foods,
scientists say.
Researchers at the University
of Toronto in Canada found
that a diet rich in foods, such
as oats and nuts, was more
effective in lowering
cholesterol levels than by
cutting out saturated fats alone.
The diet that worked best in
the study also included soy
products such as milk, tofu
and meat substitutes, while
eating more peas, beans and
lentils was encouraged, the
Daily Mail reported.
The researchers discovered
that a six-month change to the
diet could result in a
“meaningful” 13 per cent
reduction in blood levels of
LDL cholesterol, also called
bad cholesterol.
Following the diet for longer
would give a predicted
reduction of almost 11 per
cent in heart disease risk over
a ten-year period, the
researchers claimed.
For the study, published in the
Journal of the American
Medical Association, the
researchers looked at 345
patients suffering from high
cholesterol. They were split
into three groups, one of
which was merely
recommended to adopt a lowfat
diet that included fruit and
vegetables, while the other two
were advised on a dietary
“portfolio” consisting of
specific foods known to lower
LDL cholesterol such as nuts,
oats, soy products and lentils.
One group was counselled
during two clinic visits while
the other underwent an
“intensive” course of seven
visits. After six months the
low-fat group had experienced
a drop in LDL cholesterol
levels of three per cent.
behaviour,” study researcher
John Cryan said.
Mr. Cryan said: “Without
overstating things, this does
open up the concept that we
could develop therapies that
can treat psychiatric disorders
by targeting the gut. You
could take a yogurt with a
probiotic in it instead of an
antidepressant,” he added.
“Now, that would not be an
everyday yogurt - I’m not
saying you should go out to
the supermarket and try doing
this,” he cautioned.
“The effect depends on the
strain of probiotic you use.
The hope would be, though,
that this could have fewer side
effects than drugs.”
to be especially bad for
conducted a survey of 4,350
men and women, and
discovered that one in three
men and women have not
6 months.
The result of the survey comes
with no surprise, as we
generally have this tendency to
stick to these four golden
words “as long as possible”
before actually making an
attempt to visit a doctor.
Doctors usually advise patients
that as soon as you hit your
30s or 40s, you should get
certain age-specific medical
checkups done. Here’s a list
of must-do medical checkups
for 40 year olds:
Medical checkups for 40 year
you often suffer from shortlived,
you have a family history of
tasty or nutritious food
MBA graduate. “Since then,
I have nurtured the ambition
of starting an exclusive
vegetarian restaurant.” It’s
pure coincidence that
Prasath married Sridevi, a
nutritionist. “I try to ensure
that the food we serve here
is as nutritious as possible.
I even intend on providing
calorie content along with
food items, on request,” she
says. Prasath, Sridevi and
Vimalnathan (Prasath’s
brother, also a proprietor of
G&G) initially wanted to
open a restaurant that served
only natural food. “But we
wanted to get a pulse of the
place before introducing
natural food here,” says
Sridevi. “We want to get rid
of the notion that natural
food equals medicinal food.”
Even though G&G presently
offers a predictable platter,
the chefs and proprietors are
slowly introducing the
coronary heart disease, then
this test is a must for you in
order to check the working of
your heart.
We are going to use black
its high nutritive value,”
promises Sridevi.
The Perfect Diet & Workout
for Your Body Type
Did you know that your body
type plays an important role in
deciding your fitness routine?
Err…not the bananas, apples
and pears. A fitness trainer
would classify your figure
under three basic body types:
endomorphic, mesomorphic
and ectomorphic. Here’s what
it really means along with tips
to keep you fit.
Weighty Issues
Do you put on weight very
easily? Does even a glass of
water seem like adding to your
calorie count? Then you are
Endomorphic.
Staying Fit: Watch those
calories. Chop your three main
meals of the day into bite sizes
and have them at regular short
intervals. Snack on fruits, dry
fruits, nuts, peanuts or raw
veggies with low fat dressing
when you get the urge to
munch on something. Activities
like aerobics, brisk walking and
biking suit you best.
On a Balance : Your weight
hardly fluctuates and staying
trim is a piece of cake. That
makes you mesomorphic.
Staying Fit: Maintain a normal
diet and fitne’ss routine. Train
with moderate to heavy
weights so you can gain
muscle quickly. You can also
include sports or light aerobics
to add variation to your routine.
You are the exact opposite of
an endomorph. No matter how
much you eat, the weight scales
don’t seem to tip at all. Petite
and skinny are tags that you
Smoking ups sex
hormones, disease risk
A new study has found that
postmenopausal women who
smoke have higher levels of
sex hormones and run a higher
risks of falling prey to chronic
diseases than their nonsmoking
counterparts.
“The observed increase in sex
hormone levels with cigarette
use suggests that tobacco
smoke, apart from its direct
toxic and carcinogenic effects,
may also influence chronic
disease risk through hormonal
mechanisms,” said Judith
Brand, MSc, of University
Medical Center Utrecht in The
Netherlands and lead author of
the study.
“The good news is that the
effect of cigarette smoking
appears reversible, as an
almost immediate reduction in
sex hormone levels was seen
in women who quit using
cigarettes,” she added.
In this study, researchers
examined blood samples from
2,030 postmenopausal women
have learnt to live with. This
makes you an Ectomorph.
Staying Fit: For gaining
weight, supplement your diet
with food high in calorific content.
And that does not include junk
food. Go for power smoothiesput
a banana in a blender with a
cup of milk, throw in some
almonds and some peanut butternow
that sounds like a great way
to gain weight right? And it’s
healthy too!
Weight training is ideal for
your body type, but avoid
long and frequent sessions.
Now that you know your body
type, select your fitness routine
accordingly. If you’re
somewhere in between two
types opt for a middle approach
with both diet and exercise.
Remember that most people
tend to be mixtures of these
types. So, consult your general
physician and a fitness trainer
before you start with a
exercise regime and diet plan.
GRAPEFRUIT IS GOOD FOR YOU
Grapefruit is called so because it grows in clusters like grapes.
In Latin, grapefruits are called citrus paradisi meaning the
citrus from paradise. One of the most popular weight loss diets
is the Grapefruit diet. This diet involves drinking of at least
three glasses of grape fruit juice everyday, as it helps burn
calories. Well known actress Sophia Loren was one of the
first celebrities to endorse this diet. The grapefruit looks
similar to an orange but is larger in size and belongs to the
citrus family of fruits.
However, the flesh of the grapefruit is usually red or pink in
colour. Grapefruits taste sour and bitter but have a lot of health
benefits. Here are some health benefits of grapefruits that you
didn't know:
Though grapefruits are sour and acidic in taste, they are
known to produce an alkaline reaction after digestion. This
helps treat acidity which can affect the digestive system.
Grapefruit is rich in vitamin C which helps maintain the
elasticity of the arteries. It also strengthens them. Pectin, a
compound, is known to help reduce the accumulation of
arterial deposits. Consuming grapefruit on a regular basis will
help you boost your immune system.
Grapefruits are highly beneficial for diabetics as they help in
bringing down blood sugar levels in the body. Eating
grapefruit before bedtime gives good sleep thus, reducing
symptoms of insomnia.Pregnant women can reduce water
retention in their bodies and swelling in their legs by
consuming grapefruit.
Grapefruits contain fat-burning enzymes that can promote
weightloss. That's because they prevents sugars and starch
getting stored in the body.
determining your menopause
stage.
- Breast exam - Annual breast
exams are a must test for any
women who has crossed 40.
- Ultrasound - Ultrasound
helps in keeping any changes
in the ovaries in check.
- Pelvic exam - This is an
annual test which helps in
trapping any changes in the
vagina, fallopian tubes,
bladder, rectum, uterus or
vagina.
Medical checkups for 40 year
old men
- Prostate exam - This helps in
making sure that there are no
abnormalities. This test must
be performed once in every 2
years to keep prostate cancer
at bay.
- Testosterone levels -
Testosterone levels must be
checked once every year, to
ensure normal levels.
aged 55-81 years, who were
categorized as ‘current’,
‘former’ or ‘never’ smokers.
They found that the study
participants who were
‘current’ smokers had higher
levels of androgens and
estrogens, while ‘former’
smokers who had quit within
1-2 years had sex hormone
New lands, new opportunities Chitradeepa
Embarking on a trip to study
abroad? Pre-departure
meetings can help you shed
your inhibitions and prepare
you for the experience the
unknown holds.
After having steadfastly tried
for admissions in universities
abroad for over a year and
having succeeded, now it is
time for students to get ready
for departure. Advice and
suggestions on which airline
to fly, what to pack and where
to stay will come in from all
quarters. Invariably, students
do get confused at the last
moment and get desperate too.
Pre-departure briefings are
valuable source of information
for students going abroad.
Such briefings provide them
with required information and
also clarify certain countryspecific
doubts they may have.
Travel, accommodation, food,
weather, clothing, packing,
banking, medical facility,
insurance, local transport and
academic culture are the areas
where students have plenty of
questions during such
sessions.
“At the pre-departure meetings
students generally get their
doubts pertaining to practical,
cultural and academic
information cleared. Students
going abroad for higher
education should attend such
orientation meetings and
educate themselves and be
fully prepared for a whole
new experience. ”, says
Sudha Sudeep, of Study in
Holland, Chennai.
“These days students going to
universities overseas are very
well-informed. Thanks to
social networking sites and
blogs, students network well.
Even before they left India, a
group of students I met
recently, made their Christmas
vacation travel plan via
Facebook with five other
students from India, going to
Germany,” says Padmavathi
Chandramouli of German
Academic Exchange Service
(DAAD), Chennai.
While much of the general
information is available online,
students flock to these predeparture
meeting with the
goal of networking.
“Networking is a must when
you study in a foreign
country. Apart from providing
you an opportunity to travel to
another city or another country
to meet up with friends, you
can find an opportunity to do
internships in another
university. A good networking
has immense benefits,” says
Naveen Chopra, of The
Chopras, an education
consultancy. Meeting alumni
and interacting with other
students who have secured
admissions in various other
universities is exciting for
students going abroad.
“We rope in Indian students
currently studying in Holland
and on a vacation in India, to
address the students. Alumni
are also invited to share their
experience,” says Ms. Sudeep.
Helping students understand
the cultural differences seems
to be the major task at predeparture
briefings. “For any
successful collaboration — be
it in an educational context or
business, inter-cultural
knowledge is absolutely
imperative. Culture being the
software of the mind, if people
are running on different
cultural coding, let alone
successful collaboration, the
venture could even fail,” says
Sreemathi Ramnath, founder
and principal consultant,
Immer Besser, a cross-cultural
management consultancy.
For students travelling to
France for higher education, a
strong cultural orientation will
Eight engineering students
from the city build an ecofriendly
dream vehicle. They
hope to repeat the success of
their project last year that
placed them third in the
national level contest
conducted by SAENIS
Eight engineering college
students from the PSG
College of Technology worked
late nights last year to get their
dream vehicle rolling. Their
aim was to create a tri-cycle
that would be faster, more
efficient than a normal cycle
yet remain eco friendly. At the
end of two months, they came
up with ProDrive. This vehicle
was placed third in the
national level Effi cycle contest
conducted by SAENIS
(Society of Automotive
Engineers North India
Section) at the Punjab
University in Chandigarh in
October 2010. This year too, a
team has been chosen from the
college for the same
competition.The Effi Cycle
contest was started by SAE in
an attempt to promote eco
friendly vehicles and at the
same time provide graduate
and postgraduate students
with an opportunity to
fabricate their own vehicles
keeping in mind the
environmental implications for
the automobile industry.
In order to apply, a project
report has to be prepared and
sent complete with cost report
and marketing strategies.
Once, that is approved by a
team of experts from
companies such as Maruti,
TATA and L.G, the next step
is a phone interview. “We are
Right Hemisphere's software
would let SAP's customers
see animated views of
products to improve design,
assembly and support, SAP
grilled during the phone
interview”, says K.Gautam
Kumar.
Sathyaseelan, the team Captain,
K.Gautam Kumar, V. Praveen
Kumaar and M.B. Sriram,
final year Automobile
Engineering students were part
of the team last year and this
year too. They were chosen
by their seniors after a round
of tests and interviews.
Similarly, they have chosen
four of their juniors to create
the Pro Drive 2011.The
vehicle was dismantled before
it was transported by train to
Chandigarh. “It was an
amazing learning experience.
Once we were there, students
from competing teams helped
us putting it together again,”
says Praveen Kumaar.
An ordinary cycle can travel at
a speed of around 10-15kms/
hr. The Prodrive 2010 could
travel at a speed of 35-45
said. On Sept 2, a US judge
in Oakland, California, threw
out a $1.3 billion copyrightinfringement
verdict against
brought by its rival, Oracle
Corp. A jury had awarded the
damages to Oracle in
November. US District Judge
Phyllis Hamilton ruled that
SAP should get a new trial
for damages if Oracle rejects
her decision to reduce the
amount to $272 million.
be of great help to enjoy their
stay there. “We brief them
about classroom experience,
student-teacher interaction,
homework and assignments
and also on examination and
evaluation. For one batch of
students, we organised a
dinner wherein they learnt
table manners and food habits
of the French,” Joan Thangaraj
of Campus France.
Pre-departure briefings also
bring up various problems
faced by Indian students.
Usually, Indian students are
concerned about their
academic competence in a
foreign university set-up. It is
understood that Indian students
are strong in theory but need
to improve a lot in areas of
application. “We communicate
drawbacks if any and also
what is expected of them by
the universities and prepare
the students adequately, so that
they enjoy their campus life
without any stress, says Ms.
Chandramouli. “Academic
culture must be understood by
Indians and they must learn to
adhere to the rules and
regulations of the university,”
says Ms. Thangaraj.
Students are advised not to
confine their interaction only
Coimbatore 'Efficycle' developed by the Automobile Engineering students of PSG College of Technology
kms/hr. It can withstand a
weight of 75 kgs over and
above the weight of the two
drivers. At the competition, a
pile of bricks was placed on
the vehicle to check if it could
withstand the weight. “It was
nerve-wracking. In the case of
a lot of the other teams, parts
of their vehicles would just
come apart when the bricks
were placed on them.
Thankfully, nothing of that
sort happened with us,” smiles
Praveen. We had the vehicle
ready at least two weeks
before the event, so that our
drivers could ride it and check
for any setbacks. This time
around too we hope to have
the Prodrive 2011 ready by
the first week of October.
Prodrive 2011
The team has secured the
materials for the Prodrive 2011.
This time, the vehicle is to be
powered with a 400 W PMDC
motor that is being brought
from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a 48
V battery and 4 dynamos. “So,
the speed of this vehicle would
undoubtedly be more than 50
km/hr, says, Sathyaseelan.
Recyclable seats and a better
grade of steel that reduces the
weight of the vehicle are the
improvements these young
minds have brought in this time.
“Our professors, particularly
Mr. V.M. Murugesan, have
been our constant guides,”
points out Praveen.
As there were no sponsors, last
year’s prize money of Rs
30,000 was used to cover the
cost of the project. “If brought
into the market, these cycles can
be used as taxis. We cannot
deplete our resources of fossil
fuels” says Sathya. These
students do not get any extra
credits from their college for this
endeavour. They do it purely
out of their interest.
with Indian students, but to
interact with local students and
those from other countries.
These experiences go a long
way in building international
network and a strong career as
well. “ “Be aware, tolerate and
adapt to the new culture. Only
then can students gel with the
mutli-cultural population and
that is necessary for a global
career,” says Ms. Sudeep.
Cultural understating is a skill.
Familiarity with the local
customs and cultural context,
and speaking the language can
make the stay in a foreign
country a pleasant experience.
These apart, Indian students
can effectively plan the role of
a cultural ambassador and
inspire other international
students to visit India as a
tourist or do their internships
in one of the Indian
universities. Today intercultural
competence has been
singled out as the chief
ingredient of international
success.
As Ms. Ramnath says,
“Investing in this learning
makes eminent sense as it
would minimise the losses
through failed projects and
maximises the collaboration
potential.”
Radhika Tandon is confident
that Isharya, her jewellery
collection, is on its way to
becoming a global brand
Radhika Tandon, a former
attorney, quit her day job to
pursue her passion for
jewellery-designing full time.
She was backed in this
endeavour by her sister-in-law
Gauri Tandon.
The duo began “Isharya” in
2004 and within three years, it’s
considered among the most
sought after jewellery brands in
America. The turning point for
the duo occurred in 2007 when
their collection got a full-page
feature in a leading fashion
magazine.
Their accessories have been
adorned by celebrities such as
Paris Hilton, Cameron Diaz,
Jennifer Lopez, Selena
Gomez, Drew Barrymoore,
Duffy, Eva Longoria Parker,
Gossip Girl, Hayden
Panettiere, Hilary Duff, Jessica
Simpson, Jessica Szohr,
Linda Evangelista, Lisa Rinna,
Lucy Liu, Melanie Brown and
Vanessa Williams.
Their jewellery is
predominantly Indian in its
style and aestheticism. “Our
jewellery is mostly fusion.
There are some pieces that are
the CTO and tech-guru in the
company; he was a chief
architect at Wipro
technologies. The three
professionals had put in about
ten years of work before they
decided to strike out on their
own.
Their manners and the way
they speak do not show the
exposure that they have got.
Totally ‘naadan’ in attitude,
with a hint of the right degree
of sophistication, the common
denominator of all three is the
enthusiasm and hope they
exude and their never-say-die
approach. They complement
one another in a way which is
not intrusive, even while they
are enlightening you on their
cutting edge technology, each
one putting in his view and
experiences.
Untrodden path
So it’s not a surprise that they
opted for the untrodden path,
instead of getting into the
usual computer software
solutions that most IT
professionals prefer.
They wanted to work on the
latest technological revolution
then, as smart phones had just
been launched worldwide.
Very few firms had ventured
into creating a digital media
publishing platform, even in
the West.
All three in their early 30’s,
are gung-ho about their
company formed in 2008,
‘when the smart phone had
distinctly Indian but we design
them in a way that’ll make it
more wearable for Westerners.
It shouldn’t be too busy. Our
jewellery is for the modern
woman who can wear
jewellery from day to night.”
The duo began Isharya
because they “saw a void in the
market for quality Indian
jewellery”. The creative
process, for Radhika, is a funfilled
one. “Coming up with
different concepts for us is not
a tedious job, but a nice
challenge. Every year, Gauri
and I decide on four big
concepts. Each of our pieces is
unique and we get ideas from
whatever that catches our eye
while we travel or research. We
love working with resin and
rare stones,” Radhika explains.
Radhika considers Isharya a
trend-setter “We are inspired
hardly entered Kochi.’ They
dared to create a digital
publishing platform for
mobiles and tablets with
touchscreen technologies, right
here in their motherland. Of
course, one big arm is in the
U.S, where they frequent and
they have customers all over
the globe.
Smartphones and tablets
In simpler terms, this is what
they do: All those who have
these smartphones, iPads,
android phones, Blackberries,
Window phones, can be
reached by publishers in a big
way.
It isn’t one dimensional, that is,
not the print material alone that
can be seen on these devices.
It’s interactive, the audio visuals
show more than words and
high quality pictures do speak
louder than words. For
instance, when a publisher or
an advertiser is trying to reach
out to people about a new car
that’s been launched, or when
a guy on the go wants to read
a magazine, a mobile or tablet
magazine or news application,
using this platform provides a
rich interactive experience, they
say. RapidValue helps
publishers develop branded
magazine and news applications
on multiple mobile devices.
Under this system of tablet and
smartphone publishing,
publishers stand to gain a
good deal as they can get
revenue from both
Page 6
by our creativity. Whatever we
create for our clients is
something we must also
wear.” Though Isharya has
made its presence felt in
America, it’s essentially
inspired by traditional Indian
jewellery. “We’ve grown up in
India and hence have a fair
idea of Indian jewellery. We
re-interpret our jewellery in a
modern way.”
From a small organisation,
Isharya is now available at
four to five hundred stores
across America, West Asia,
Europe, Japan and Russia.
“We can now confidently
claim that Isharya is a global
brand. We decided to launch
in India only a year ago
because earlier the markets
here weren’t open to new
ideas. Today, Indians are
beginning to accept branded
fashion wear.”
“Isharya is for the confident
and well-travelled woman,
who is also aware of trends.
The only fact that ought to be
borne in mind is that jewellery
is an accessory, it completes a
look, but it’s not to
overpower.”
collection is available at
Techies quit jobs to support anti-corruption movement
BANGALORE / AGENCIES
: Quitting routine job and
setting up own firm to devote
time to social activism of the
Anna Hazare kind? That's
precisely what two techies
who have quit jobs from two
cutting-edge companies are
doing - turning entrepreneurs
to also be social activists, a
new dimension that is
emerging among some
employees in the tech world
who have social concerns.
Yogesh Devaraj has quit his
job at Cisco while Nitin Jagtap
has quit from IBM. Both are
now full-time volunteers of
India Against Corruption
(IAC) and have been actively
involved in the Hazare
campaign. Their stories are
interesting and inspiring - of
quitting plush jobs to set up
their own firms so as to be
part of social activism while
being able to work on their
own terms.
Yogesh was a program
manager at Cisco and has
worked for the company for
20 years, 12 of that in the
US. Why did he quit a wellpaying
job? "I quit my job
about nine months ago and I
have been working with IAC
for five months.
I wanted a break from work
having worked almost 20
years at a stretch. I felt I
needed to do something on
my own and work at my own
pace. I also felt I needed to
give back something to
society. A few months after I
quit, the Hazare campaign
started and I felt I had a role
there given its objectives,"
says Yogesh. "I've taken a
break for a year after which I
plan to have my own set-up.
So this year I will be fully
into activism and the Anna
Hazare campaign fits into my
view of life. Once I have my
set-up , I will divide my time
between work and activism.
This would be possible
because the workplace would
be my own,'' says Yogesh
whose wife and kids are fully
in support of his idea.
He says the savings he
managed to put together
during his 12-13 year US stint
is seeing him through during
the break. "You can't take a
permanent break from work
unless you have vast amount
of wealth. That's why I plan to
get back to work next year -
but in my own set-up. That
Radhika Tandon
way I can manage day-to-day
expenses and also be able to
devote time to the campaign."
Nitin Jagtap who was at IBM
for 13 years also quit his job
around eight to nine months
back. "I wanted a break and I
wanted to be on my own.
Working for 12 to 14 hours
daily at a stretch for 12 to 14
years stresses you out. You've
left with little time to do
anything else other than work.
You spend less time with
family, relatives and friends.
Work-life balance changes and
you need to restore that,'' says
Jagtap. Jagtap says as work
took most of his time, he
couldn't do social work.
"There are so many things
happening around you. You
see it and yet you can't do
anything about it. A few
months after I quit, the Anna
Hazare campaign started. My
inclination to do social work
and the rise of the campaign
coincided. I decided to jump
into it as I believed the
campaign addressed an issue
affecting each and every
section of society. I decide I
would be full time into this at
least for a year."
But Jagtap too, like Yogesh,
will get back to work on his
own terms. "I want to set up a
firm in the area of financial
services. I've begun some initial
work. I plan to devote 40% to
60% of my time to activism and
having your own firm is the
best way to do it as you are
your own boss. The firm will
also give me earnings to sustain
myself and I will have the
flexibility to do what I want."
advertisement and subscription
from the user.
“Business magazines in the
U.S. and West Asia are using
our digital publishing platform
now,” says Sirish, who looks
after the business development
of the company. “In fact, we
have helped develop the first
iPad-based magazine
publishing system in West
Asia,” adds Rajesh. In India
too, people have evinced
interest in the system, they
say.
Staff
They have 80 employees at
their office in Infopark and
about ten in the U.S. “We
have a very stringent
recruitment procedure, which
is a four-deck one. It’s not
mere experience that counts
but fresh ideas. Anyone with
new ideas among our team
has the freedom to put it up at
meetings and go forward with
it too. Flexi timings are
allowed as we believe in a
performance and result
oriented culture,” says Rinish.
Therefore, he says, attrition
levels are low. There are 15
women among the staff.
India beats Pakistan,
Goalkeeper S. Sreejesh stole
the limelight with two crucial
saves as India defeated
Pakistan 4-2 in the penalty
shoot-out in a nerve-wrecking
final to clinch the inaugural
Asian Champions Trophy
hockey tournament here on
Sunday. The high-voltage
summit clash was marred by
Pakistan coach's unwarranted
action of constantly abusing
Indian players from the roof
of the stadium. Whenever there
was an infringement from the
Indian side, he abused
liberally. And whenever the
umpires blew against India, he
New Delhi, August 23, 2011:
Yuvraj Singh, India's batting
sensation and renowned ICC
World Cup 2011 ‘Player of
the tournament’ today
announced its association with
Pathways World School to set
up state-of- the- art centers of
cricketing excellence in the
Delhi-NCR region.
Commenting on the
partnership, Yuvraj Singh
said, “I would like to thank
Pathways for this great
opportunity. I very strongly
believe that education and
sports go hand in hand which
help in building strong
characters and leaders. Formal
education with the joy of
learning combined with
Pathways ethos as a company
will establish a long lasting
and perfect partnership.
Today’s youth needs strong
guidance & an opportunity to
hone their budding talent. The
centers for excellence will
nurture today’s young talent
Actor Kamaal Rashid Khan of
Bigg Boss fame recently
commented on Poonam
Pandey's striptease on twitter.
Here's what he said...
"You Twitter bloody crap idiot.
How dare you to ask me to
Follow most dirty lady on planet
Poonam Pandey? May be
Poonam is doing all this to go to
Bigg Boss 5, but they will never
take her and if they will take her
then I shall not go to Bigg
Boss5. Poonam Pandey was
having 10k followers and now
having 25k. So I can Imagine
the choice of people here. Chullu
bhar pani main doob maro.
I have seen Poonam's ass on
twitter and let me tell you truth I
have never ever seen so dirty
ass. I shall kill myself before to
touch it. Please people don't
compare Rakhi Sawant with
hollered ‘Thank You'.
Rajpal Singh, Danish Mujtaba,
Yuvraj Walmiki and Sarvanjit
Singh scored for India in the
penalty shootout while
Muhammad Rizwan and
Waseem Ahmed sounded the
board for Pakistan after both
the sides were locked goalless
in the regular and extra time.
India started the shootout on a
wrong note when Pakistan
goalkeeper Imran Shah saved
the shot from Gurwinder
Singh Chandi. Sreejesh then
came to the fore with a save
off Haseem Abdul Khan. It
was then Mujtaba's turn and
Yuvraj Singh launches Centers for Cricketing
with the help of the masters
themselves. I am thankful to
Pathways for this fruitful
association which will give the
opportunity to young &
upcoming cricketing stars of
India to display their talent &
be recognized.”
Speaking of their initiative
with the YSCE, Praveen Jain,
Director of Pathways Schools
said, “We are delighted to join
hands with World Cup
Superstar and we hope these
Poonam Pandey's
ass is dirty: KRK Vidya
Poonam Pandey. Rakhi gives
controversial statements but she
doesn't show her ass and b**bs.
I shall be happy for those who
would like to see ass of Kim,
Mallika, Katrina and Sonakshi.
he neatly sent the ball past
Shah to give India 1-0 lead.
Pakistan equalised when
Rizwan scored but Indian
captain Rajpal slotted the ball
home to give his side 2-1 up.
Then came the crucial save by
Sreejesh as he stopped Shafqat
Rasool from scoring,
advancing and taking the shot
on the pads.
Yuvraj made it 3-1 and the
Pakistan veteran Waseem cut
the scores to 3-2 but
Sarvanjit's conversion past
Shah ensured India ran out
champion.
more Indian cricket sensations
like Yuvraj. We have always
believed in giving something
the premises will be great
source of encouragement and
keep the class. Once more good
Poonam Pandey. I hate small and
dirty asses and she is having
really small and dirty one."
A last-minute goal by Firhan
Ashari helped Malaysia beat
Japan and clinch the bronze
medal. Just when it seemed
that the match would go into
extra-time, Malaysia moved in
from the right flank and the
cross found Ashari on top of
the circle. He tapped the ball
to his left and, with a
powerful reverse shot, beat the
Japanese goalkeeper.
South Korea avoided the
wooden spoon beating host
China 2-1 in the play-offs for
the 5th-6th spot.
Korea scored its opening goal
in the 10th minute when Jong
many eyebrows with her bold
in Milan Luthria's The Dirty
Picture. In high spirits, the
actor talks about her different
avatar and her comfort level
with her three co-stars —
Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan
Hashmi and Tusshar.
Your revealing outfits and
bold scenes in The Dirty
Picture are quite a departure
for you. Would you call the
scenes obscene?
No, not at all. I have never
enjoyed being a woman more
than in The Dirty Picture. It
celebrates the woman like the
rainbow — in all its colours. I
just hope this role adds another
shade to me as an actor.
At any point, was it
uncomfortable for you?
I was not uncomfortable at all.
I was very sure I was in very
Hyun Jang converted a penalty
corner. The lead was enhanced
in the 28th minute when Ju
Hun Kim slammed in a goal.
China managed to score a
consolation goal in the 62nd
minute through Yixian Liu. The
jubilant Malaysians celebrated
their bronze medal while the
Japanese crumbled on the turf,
completely shocked.
Meanwhile in New Delhi, Hockey
India will felicitate the Indian team
on Tuesday for winning the
inaugural Asian Champions
Trophy. “It's big moment for Indian
hockey.,” Hockey India Secretary-
General Narinder Batra said.
England wraps up series
as rain forces a tie
LONDON/AGENCIES : The
fourth ODI between India and
England ended in a tie at
Lord’s here today. India after
its 280 for five stretched
England in the fourth game of
the NatWest Series before a
largely sunny day turned damp
and three rain-interruptions
tweaked in a stalemate.
England scored 270 for eight
in 48.5 overs and that was
exactly the par score the
Duckworth-Lewis method
stipulated.
If England had managed
another run or Ravi Bopara
had blocked one ball, the
match would have been in
Alastair Cook's pocket.
to cloak it as much. He is so
'Aishwarya Rai's upset with
Kareena Kapoor'
Kareena Kapoor and the
Bachchans have a history.
Since the Karisma Kapoor-
Abhishek Bachchan engagement
went kaput, the relationship
between this set of Kapoors
and the Bachchans has been
strained.
Now news has it that the
Bachchan bahu Aishwarya
Rai is not very happy with
the fact that Kareena has
readily accepted Heroine, a
project that was started with
her; a film she had to let go
off when she realized that she
pregnant. Ash has gracefully
returned the signing amount
of Heroine; but she has
reportedly issued an ultimatum
to the producers, saying they
cannot use any of her stills
from her week-long shoot of
the film. In other words, Ash
wants closure. So, it comes as
a shock to learn from an
insider that Ash is not happy
with Kareena's decision to
accept Heroine.
Says the source, "Ash is
rumoured to be upset with
Bebo. Just the fact that Bebo
decided to walk into a project
that Ash was meant to resume
post her maternity leave is
reportedly the reason for the
stress.'' Kareena denies
FIH pulls CT out of Delhi
The FIH has pulled out the
hockey Champions Trophy
from New Delhi scheduled
from December 3.
In an announcement on
Tuesday, the FIH said that the
decision stemmed from the
“ongoing problems related to
the governance of hockey in
the country.”
The FIH is looking for an
alternative venue. However,
India has been invited to
participate in the Champions
Challenge to be held in South
Africa in November.
“We regret that we have to
move the Champions Trophy
from India,” said FIH
President Leandro Negre. “It is
difficult for the teams, the
organisers and the fans. But
would be with Emraan, I still
am (laughs). It's been a great
deal of fun. Initially, I thought
that he didn't talk or and laugh
too much. But, now it is the
reverse. After seeing Silk (my
character), his mouth doesn't
remain shut (laughs).
And Tusshar?
What can I say? We had a
lovely time shooting in
Hyderabad. I made sure he
stayed back even when he
was not shooting because he
is such a positive, wonderful
person to be around, besides
being a fun co-star. He has
such straight-faced humour —
you don't even know he has
cracked a joke… and he has.
With your sari-clad image,
how did Milan Luthria think
of you for the role?
we feel that this is the only
way to maintain the integrity
of our sport.”
At issue is the governance
structure of the sport in India.
It is a fundamental and nonnegotiable
requirement of the
Olympic Charter and the FIH
Statutes that there be only one
governing body for any one
sport in any country with
exclusive authority and
responsibility to govern,
organise national competitions
and to enter national teams in
international competitions.
Dr. Michael Green, two-time
Olympian and Chairman of the
FIH Athlete's Committee,
added: “The first priority has to
be the athletes, and while this
was a tough decision for the
FIH to make, I feel that they
have ultimately made the
choice that is best for the
athletes involved.”
The FIH is in the final stages
of reviewing bids from other
nations that are willing and
able within the scheduled
timeframe to host an event of
the magnitude of the
Champions Trophy.
The FIH will continue to
monitor the governance
structure in India and hopes
that a resolution can be found
before it begins to affect
future events set to be held in
India.
The next event scheduled to be
hosted in India is the Olympic
qualification tournament in
February.
