When he returned from England in 1875, Ambrose Bierce worked for a time at the U.S. Mint in San
Francisco. Then, in early 1877, he was hired by Frank M. Pixley to be a columnist for his new weekly paper,
the Argonaut. Bierce at once resurrected a column he had begun in England, “Prattle” (initially titled “The
Prattler”), where he pungently skewered the motley array of political hacks, religious hypocrites, poetasters,
and sundry other deplorables that the city (as well as the nation and the world) offered in such abundance. In
addition, he reprinted items that had appeared in the British magazines he’d worked for in 1872–75, such as
“The Fables of Zambri, the Parsee” as well as his Little Johnny sketches, although many of these pieces
were revised beyond recognition. He also presented extensively revised versions of some of his tales—comic
sketches such as “Jim Beckwourth’s Pond” and “A Shipwreckollection,” as well as his powerful horror tale
“The Night-Doings at Deadman’s.” This period saw Bierce refining the literary and satirical skills that he
would utilize over the next thirty years of his career.
