The Rotman Vision Fund
An Investment in the Future
The annual Vision Fund campaign is one of the key fundraising
initiatives at the Rotman School. Annual gifts from our alumni
and friends support the School’s top strategic priorities
including faculty research and recruitment, student and alumni
programs and curriculum development.
In 2007–2008 our goals were to not only increase donations
to the Vision Fund, but to also increase the number of
donors. We are pleased to report that we surpassed our goal
in both areas. We raised over $425,000 in unrestricted support
for the School, up 27 per cent from 2006–2007.We
also increased our donors by 26 per cent, to nearly 1,000
supporters who made an annual contribution.
All of this growth means even more success for the Rotman
School. Support for the Vision Fund enables us to adapt quickly
and remain competitive by giving our leaders the flexibility
they need to fund both growing and emerging initiatives. Some
examples of the impact the Vision Fund had include; increasing
the class size of our MBA program by five per cent, hiring 15
new faculty members from around the world in 2007–2008
(including renowned urban thinker Richard Florida) and
introducing the Design Study Tour which took Rotman students
to the Stanford Institute of Design as well as a number
of design-friendly firms in Silicon Valley.
8
The annual Vision Fund
increased giving by 27 per
cent and also increased
donors by 26 per cent.
Additionally, the generosity our alumni and friends show in
supporting the Vision Fund helps provide a base for future
gifts. Our donors feel that their gifts are a worthwhile investment.Their
continued support inspires others to want to
step up and be a part of something exciting, whether it is giving
$50 for the first time, increasing their annual support to
the leadership level, or remembering Rotman in their estate
planning. Gifts to the annual fund are a significant part of
how we move forward and take Rotman to the next level.
Alumni Support
Alumni are key ambassadors for the Rotman School. They
support us in many ways, including making gifts to the annual
Rotman Vision Fund. In 2007–2008 we were pleased to see
more alumni than ever before making a smart investment by
contributing to the Rotman School. Here are just a few of the
ways our alumni help contribute to the growth of the annual
fund:
• In the area of leadership annual giving (gifts of $1,000
–$25,000), we saw giving increase by 26 per cent and the
number of donors increase by 19 per cent. The majority of
this growth is in alumni giving
• University of Toronto students, calling on behalf of the
Rotman School, raised nearly $45,000 from our alumni —
an increase of nearly 40 per cent over last year
• Since the Vision Fund’s inception in 2002, alumni participation
has grown by five per cent.
Student Giving
For a second year, the Graduate Student Giving Campaign
generated gifts to continue improving interaction between
students and alumni at Rotman. Thanks to the generosity of
so many students, the School can now build upon the success
of recent events, enhancing both content and participation
for students and alumni alike. As well, the campaign revenue
will help facilitate the redesign of the My C.C.C. section of
the Student Portal, providing quicker and easier access to
alumni volunteer contacts.
Faculty/Staff Campaign
As it has in each of the past four years, this spring’s
Faculty/Staff Campaign set a new fundraising record.This
unique opportunity, which allows those who work at the
School to support Rotman and its strategic goals, generated
just under $95,000. 51 per cent of faculty and staff participated
in the campaign.
This year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign was made possible through
the tremendous efforts of our six volunteer co-chairs.
Returning as the Senior Management Chair was Richard
Powers, assistant dean and executive director, MBA programs.
Faculty Co-Chairs were David Dunne, adjunct professor of
marketing and co-director, Rotman Teaching Effectiveness
Centre, and Eric Kirzner, professor of finance and John H.
Watson Chair in Value Investing. Serving as Staff Co-Chairs for
a second year were Jennifer Hildebrandt, manager, special
events and communications, and Lynda Paterson, MBA
recruitment communications officer. Joining them this year
was Marisa Ciappara, program coordinator, EMBA.
