TOLL FREE 888-845-2100 TRAILS 17TRAILSROOT RIVER STATE TRAILThe Root River Trail system attracts thousands of outdoorenthusiasts each season. Discover the dramatic river-carvedlimestone bluffs of southeastern Minnesota on this paved, 42-mile trail. Constructed on an abandoned railroad, the trailfollows the path of the Root River. Riding the trail you maysee people canoeing, kayaking, or tubing on the river. Moreinformation on the trails available at www.rootrivertrail.org.HARMONY-PRESTON VALLEY STATE TRAILRide over rolling hills and through scenic valleys on this 18-mile multiple use trail between Preston and Harmony. The trailfollows the South Branch of the Root River, passing through avariety of wooded areas and farmland. A 1-mile extension ofthe trail has been added west of Preston heading towardsForestville State Park. Wildlife is abundant along both trailsand sightings of bald eagles, wild turkey, deer, hawks, andturkey vultures are common. The Root River State Trail and theHarmony-Preston Valley State Trail connect near Isinours ForestJunction. During the summer months the trails are used forbiking, hiking, and in-line skating. The trails are also groomedfor cross-country skiing in the winter. Trail information availableat www.dnr.state.mn.us/biking. Trail maps are on page 18-19.PRESTON HISTORIC WALKING TOUREnjoy a leisurely downtown stroll to view and appreciatePreston’s historical architecture. Walking maps available atthe Preston Visitor’s Center, online at www.prestonmnhistory.com or at other locations throughout town. It features veryenjoyable descriptions of the history of Preston businesses, aswell as old pictures of the businesses. It will take you back intime.PRESTON BIKE SHARE PROGRAMWith funding from the Fillmore County State HealthImprovement Program, the Root River Trail Towns organizationhas partnered with several cities to create a Bike Shareprogram. Participating communities include Harmony,Preston, Fountain, Peterson and Rushford. Each communitywas granted five to seven adult bicycles, helmets, locks anda bicycle rack; however, each community has a slightlydifferent means of lending out the bicycles and helmets.
