Description
1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE.This is a manual on drill and ceremonies. It covers the manual of arms with tile
rifle; pistol, automatic rifle. and the carbine. It covers salutes and honors; commandlils; steps and nialchings;
mounted ad d disnolunted drill; ceremlonies; battalion and regimental parade formations; inspections; and
arm--and-hani signals for mounted drill.2. GENERAL.a. Duing tie first days of trallilg, the question
frequently is asked, "lWhy do we need drill and ceremonies?" The answer is that there can be no orderly
movement of men or units without, a precise and united effort. We have ample evidence of this truth in
civilian life. For example, let us take the drill of a high school or college football team. Remember how the
coach worked out the playson a diagram first and later iU practice. The men practiced them in every detail
by rulnling each play over and over. Each man had a certain part to play. Wlhenl the qulalterback called the
signals, each man did exactly w-hat he had been told to do. If one man failed, the play went to pieces.b. So it
is with a soldier. He is part of a team that works smoothly when every man plays his part.This same situation
existed when the quarterback called the signals in football. In the army a man knows what to do in response
to a command. He knows what his friends are going to do as he plays his part. His confidence in them grows
until, in the end, he feels as sure of them as he does of himself. This final result is
teamwork.CONTENTSCHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTIONCHAPTER 2 DRILL-GENERALCHAPTER 3
