Chemistry Kids

of the student's reactions as they experiment with 

solubility, diffusion, pH, and more. This introduction 

to our chemical world will emphasize safe, fun 

experiments as learning tools.

Crime Scene Investigation 

Tony Eggert 

:Learn to be a super science sleuth. Have fun 

learning about forensics and crime lab chemistry as 

you perform different experiments designed to show 

you just how those tricky cases are solved. Search 

for evidence at our “crime scene” as you work to 

gather clues. Be a CSI investigator dusting for 

fingerprints, testing for blood type and DNA using 

simulated blood. Examine fibers and plastics, and 

identify evidence using chromatography. 



Basic Aerospace Modeling 

Tony Eggert 

Draw, design, and build your own model aircraft, 

using basic kits. This course will develop the skills 

necessary to build these flying models. The 

aerospace terms needed to understand the flying 

machines of our Space Age will be used and 

explained. Test your model in our flight contest! 



Robotics 

Jay Jayatilak 

The robots R2D2 and CP30 of Star Wars fame, and 

a robot to do all your chores are for now pure 

fantasy. This course gets students into the science 

of real robots as they learn about the electronics and 

motor circuits involved. The mechanical design of 

movement, logic, control, and feedback will be 

employed as the students work together both on 

individual and class projects. Commercial robots, 

robot kits, and mechanical and electronic 

components will be just some of the hands-on 

materials that the students will work with.

Rocketry

Learn Rocketeering for real! Learn the fundamentals 

of rocketry used to help man explore the Moon and 

our planetary neighbors. Students will plan, build, 

and launch their own rocket as they attempt to win a 

“Spot Landing” award. (Students will be able to 

purchase, at cost, additional rockets beyond initial 

one covered by material fee.) 



Science Wizards

A hands-on course! Experiment and watch 

demonstrations using many fascinating materials. 

Topics include: electricity, human senses, magnets, 

air pressure, simple chemical reactions, & light. 

Students will be able to relate knowledge to practical 

experiences at home and in the world around us.

“Here, taste this – I made it!” This is what our young 

cooks will be saying as they go home after class. They 

will use different cooking techniques and equipment 

while learning to prepare nutritious snacks and easy 

meals. Recipes are designed for the students so that 

they will learn how to measure, cook safely and 

creatively, and have a delicious time! The boys and 

girls will have a start on their own cookbook and a lifelong 

skill!

Candy Craft, Cake & Cupcake! 

Decorating 

Joann Taragano 

You too can create edible art! Learn the basic 

techniques of cake decorating and candy making, 

then use those skills to create tasty treats for friends 

and family. We will cover making and coloring icing, 

working with a pastry bag, and creating flowers and 

borders, while we practice our creations on 

cupcakes. We will also work with candy molds, and 

we will dip all sorts of items. Our final cake 

decorating project will be a “delicious work of art.”

Ballet

This course is designed to acquaint the student with 

the basic positions and movements of classical 

ballet. Attention is given to rhythm, coordination, 

poise, grace, and posture. Students will need ballet 

slippers and leotards or shorts.

Hip Hop 

Diedra Wychoff 

Hip Hop is a fun and upbeat way to keep your feet 

moving. This funky form of dance is very energetic 

and taught to everyday music that everyone listens 

to on the radio. Warm up and stretch before getting 

into Hip Hop moves and techniques. Free-flowing 

combinations will put your dance skills to use. Wear 

comfortable clothing and sneakers.

Be a Better Babysitter

This three session workshop will help sitters learn to 

insure a safe environment for children in their care. 

Topics to be covered include: first aid and pediatric 

CPR, responding to emergencies, and providing age 

appropriate care and play opportunities. Role play, 

discussion, and A-V materials make this an interesting 

and helpful workshop. Attend all three classes and 

receive a certificate to show your employers!

Being home alone is not a wild adventure like the 

movie. It is a time when parents feel a child is mature 

and responsible enough to be left home alone. This 

workshop will explore a variety of topics such as: home 

security, phone use, power emergencies, safety, first 

aid, and more. (Parents are encouraged to attend this 

workshop with their child at no additional cost!) Open to 

students who are, or soon will be “Home Alone.”

Beginning Computer Programming 

and Website Development

A computer isn’t just for loading and running a program 

— that program has to be created. This course deals 

with the creative side of computers. Budding 

programmers will start by creating programs designed 

to solve simple problems. Programs developed in this 

course can be tailored to the student’s interests. 

Working in the programming language PHP, the 

concepts learned can be applied to other programming 

languages! Working with Apache Web Server, the 

student will get a good foundation for understanding 

what web servers are and how they work. Set up a 

website for a group of friends, yourself, or your 

family. Students need a basic knowledge of 

Windows and will need to bring a newer laptop with 

Windows Vista and/or Windows 7 and a DVD 

reader. Access to a Windows administered account 

to install software is also needed. 


Fashion Design

Fashion isn’t just clothing, it has a message! Just 

like the fashion designers for Jessica Simpson, 

Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, or Miley Cyrus you too 

can learn how to send this message. Explore the 

basics of fashion design and how to create new 

styles. Presentation boards that you make and premade 

fashion figures will help you design casual 

wear, beach wear, and even a special evening outfit.

some of the secrets of Merlin and Houdini! Learn how 

to become a magician with simple things found around

misdirection, and sleight-of-hand. Your friends and

Theatrical Production

It’s show time! This course combines acting, singing, 

costumes, make-up, backstage technical work—and 

FUN! Work together in all aspects of the theater, 

resulting in a play presented on the last class. All 

students have speaking parts, with auditions held 

the first week. This 2-hr course will have additional 

rehearsal and scenery time. Take this again and 

again. (Note: Some weekday evening rehearsals will 

be held as it gets closer to show time.)

“The batter is up at the plate. S/he swings — It’s a 

hit!” The action of a baseball game is dependent 

upon the skills of the pitcher and the batter’s hitting 

ability. This course emphasizes these two skills. 

Students will learn the mechanics and fundamentals 

to improve their baseball skills. As new skills are 

learned, they will be practiced in class and often at 

home. By the end of the course, the students will 

gain more confidence in playing the game.

Boys and Girls Basketball

Improve your basketball skills both as an individual 

and team player. Develop skills such as dribbling 

and shooting. Learn strategies and rules of the sport 

while engaging in drills. These drills, such as 

one-on-one, three-on-three, and foul shooting, will 

increase both offensive and defensive skills. 

Students may take this class more than once and 

continue to develop their skills.

Boys & Girls Gymnastics and Tumbling

This is a non-competitive introduction to basic 

gymnastics skills. Students will use mats, low 

balance beam, and mini-trampoline as they develop 

strength, flexibility, and coordination. Safety will be 

emphasized as the young gymnasts listen and 

follow directions.

Karate

Learn the fundamental skills of Okinawan Karate, 

particularly the punches, kicks, blocks, and stances. 

Lessons will also include practical self-defense 

techniques for children. The older students will learn 

advanced techniques such as throws and break-falls 

used by young adults. Classes emphasize discipline 

and respect, as well as physical fitness. No uniform 

or special equipment is needed. Students should 

wear sweat pants and a t-shirt.

Individual skills of dribbling and kicking will be

Tennis Fundamentals for Beginners

Point! Yes, you will get the point as you learn how to 

play tennis. Starting with the proper stance and 

footwork, students will then have an emphasis on 

forehand and backhand strokes. Serving and 

volleying techniques will round out the skills learned 

and practiced in class. Bring your own racket and 

balls.

T-Ball

plate after taking this course. Beginning with hitting

course the students should be ready for live

Learn to draw what you see, enhance your drawing 

skills using artist’s pencils and drawing tools. Learn 

how to draw from still-life and live models. Lessons 

will focus on sketching, perspective, shading, and 

shadowing techniques. You will be amazed with

Candle Making

Candles can be an expression of your artistic 

talents. Waxes, with different colors and scents, can 

be a special art form for you! Once heated, the wax 

can be poured into various shaped molds, or 

different colored waxes can be used to create 

striped candles, chunky candles, or even floating 

candles! Whip up some wax to create a “frosting” for 

your cupcake shaped candle. Make some special 

holders for a few of your candles. 



Ceramic Handbuilding 

Ellen Kaplan 

This is a real “hands on” course! The students will 

take a slab of clay, and using techniques such as 

the coil, slab, and pinch methods create their own 

one of a kind “masterpiece.” Getting a real feel of 

how their hands and tools can work the clay; the 

students will shape it into bowls, banks, funny 

creatures, and other decorative pieces. Once the 

clay has dried, the students will apply glazes to their 

pieces for beautiful color. Students should come 

prepared to get their hands right into this craft!

Graffiti Art

No, our students aren’t going to go out and paint up 

the side of their house or the wall of a neighborhood 

building! But they will learn about a vibrant art form. 

Graffiti art form will encourage its students to 

explore our culture and society, and to put parts of 

both into imaginative personal art. Using markers, 

canvases, and stencils, the students will learn color 

blending, lettering, and color understanding as they 

create their own personal “tag.” Graffiti, used 

respectively, encourages great creativity.

Now that you’ve learned some of the basics in 

“Graffiti Art,” you’re ready to expand you skills into 

the use of other media. Sketch your own personal 

graffiti art, then transfer your creation to canvas 

through the use of colorful spray paints. Bring in 

your skateboards, jackets, hats, etc. and use them 

as “blank canvases,” ready for you to personalize as 

you apply your graffiti art to them. 



Graphic Art/ Manga

Here we have something new — an introduction to 

the comic book and manga world. Students will 

begin by learning about storytelling and different 

illustrating styles, and applying these skills to create 

their own graphic novel. A whole range of art 

concepts such as inking, thought balloons, and 

shadow will be explored as a visual story is created. 

Comic book characters have become the basis for 

TV shows, movies, and books — see what can 

develop from yours! Some work and practice at 

home will be helpful.

Sculpture

Use some common ordinary materials to make 

dragonfly sculptures that seem ready to fly away! 

Relief sculptures, foil sculptures, and even soft 

sculptures can be made from a variety of materials 

plus a little imagination. Unleash your creative spirit 

as you work with clay, wire, paper, papier-mâché 

and other media to create 2-D and 3-D works of art.

Music and Movement for

This is a fun-filled course for parent and child in 

which we will explore basic movements and rhythms 

in a creative and relaxed way. We will work with 

musical ideas, colors, sounds, textures, clapping 

and various movement qualities. Parents or

games and songs to play with their babies. Babies 

will be stimulated by various types of music and both 

small and large motor movement ideas. The classes

experience with Microsoft Windows and MS Office 

including Word, and Excel. Learn basic computer 

hardware and operating systems (Windows). Learn

manage your PC. Learn basic tasks in the major 

components of Microsoft Office. Each student 

should bring their own newer laptop to class (or 

share with another student) with a functioning 

Windows XP or Vista, with Microsoft Office 2007 

environment.

planet! Tai Chi consists of gentle flowing

M.S.E.P. holds its classes on Saturdays, with two semesters per year at the Lloyd Road School. Each 

class meets for one hour per Saturday, except where noted. To sustain quality, classes are limited in 

size.

children and who encourage their student's creative abilities. Enrollment and staff availability may dictate

The fourth class of this semester will be for parent classroom visitation. Please refrain from staying in the 

classrooms during other class dates. 

Refunds 

Please give full consideration in your children's choices before registering for classes, so that it will not be 

necessary to request refunds. However, there are circumstances which make such requests necessary, 

and the Board of Directors will be guided by the reason for them. If for any reason, the Board of 

Education denies us facility use of the Lloyd Road School, that date will automatically be made up at the 

end of the semester. This situation will not be an allowable reason for a tuition refund. 

Inclement Weather 

If there is inclement weather, and the M.S.E.P. classes must be canceled for that day, we will use a 

system of chain phone calls. Your assistance is appreciated. Classes are canceled only if you receive our 

call. The class will be made up at a later date. 

Parking 

Please Do Not Park On Lloyd Road-use the school lots. If you must park in the street, please obey all 

parking laws. Do not double park in the school lots. PLEASE FOLLOW OUR TRAFFIC GUARD'S 

INSTRUCTIONS.

��Mail registrations (with tuition & fees) are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and are to be 

received by Wednesday, October 3rd. In-person registration will be for any remaining class enrollments 

available. If you need more application blanks, copy information on a 3 x 5 card.

Student Aides 

Conscientious, enthusiastic 7th to 12th graders are needed to assist teachers. Volunteer and receive a 

FREE COURSE (worth $100/$120) of your choice and you pay only the material fee. Interested? Complete 

the registration form, indicating your choice of Free course. (Early volunteers get a better choice of 

courses.) Aiding is also open to those who need to fulfill various school or group community service 

requirements, but a Community Scholar does not receive a free class.
