This is an altarpiece paintedfor San Silvestro at Staggia, which is said once to have bornethe date 1475. It is a coarse, rather grotesque work showingthe Assumption of the Virgin Between Four Saints, with anill-fitting predella and four pilaster panels. A number ofpanels in the same debased style survive, but luckily noneof them is in the Metropolitan Museum. Till about 1470Giovanni di Paolo must still have been a capable executant,and the latest of the panels by him in the Museum's collectionseem to have been painted about this time. The mostimpressive is a cut-down panel of Saint Ambrose in theLehman Collection, which formed part of a polyptych withlateral figures of the Fathers of the Church (fig. 40). Acompanion panel of Saint Augustine is in the Fogg ArtMuseum, and a third panel of Saint Gregory is known fromphotographs (figs. 41, 42). The fourth panel must haverepresented Saint Jerome. All three panels are cut throughthe elbows. Some impression of their original appearance,however, can be gained from a magnificent isolated panel ofSaint Jerome of the same date in the Museo dell'Opera delDuomo in Siena (fig. 43).
