GARDENING 101
TIPS AND TRICKS TO START YOUR OWN
TEXAS GARDEN
Growing your own fresh veggies and herbs is not only healthy
but also deeply gratifying. Luckily for us in Texas, we can
garden with relative ease for several months at a time due to
the moderate climate in most of the state. The key lies in ample
planning and care.
“I encourage people to try, be it herbs on a windowsill or a patch
of tomatoes in the ground,” says Marcus Bridgewater, better
known as “Garden Marcus,” a TikTok influencer and the
Spring-based CEO of wellness company Choice Forward.
“There’s joy in watching things grow, from seed to vegetable,
sprouts to vines, and flowers to fruit. Observing the stages of
growth reminds us to appreciate each plant we eat, as everything
is the result of weeks, months, or even years of growth.”
In addition to a more wholesome appreciation of where your
food comes from, gardening grants great stress relief. It
provides a rooting in nature and an alternative to our
technology- filled routines. It’s not too expensive, either: While
it takes money to build a garden, the cost of growing your own
tomatoes is pennies on the dollar compared to grocery store
costs. And homegrown organic veggies and herbs are far more
nutritious because they can be picked ripe. Your most
significant investment, at the end of the day, is time.
COMMUNITY REMINDER
Short community remidner goes here.
Your garden’s supply of sun and
shade will dictate what and where
you should plant. If you have full
sun all day long, you’ll need to
install shade cloth in places for
plants that don’t need more than
six hours of full sun.
LOTS OF SUN:
Beans and peas
Cantaloupe
Cucumber
Eggplant
Okra
Oregano
Peppers
Rosemary
Basil
• Tomatoes
Zucchini
PART SUN, PART SHADE:
Beets
Cabbage
Greens (collard, mustard, kale)
Lettuce
Radishes
Spinach
7 TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR
HOME COOL
Summer is in full swing here in Central Texas, and you know the drill—it’s going to get hot. We have a few
ideas for how you can beat the heat without spending all your hard-earned money on energy bills. Here are 7
tricks to stay cool without a Texas-sized bill:
1. Give your AC a checkup. Having your air conditioner or central HVAC system cleaned and serviced by a
professional at least once a year is essential to its health and efficiency. Spring is the best time to do this
(before the cooling season gets in full swing), but it’s never too late.
2. Use fans. Fans may seem old-fashioned, but they are still one of the most effective ways to keep cool—especially
ceiling fans, which help circulate air throughout a room. Running a ceiling fan can allow you to set
your thermostat a few degrees higher without feeling the difference.
3. Adjust your thermostat. Speaking of thermostats, they’re your most powerful tool to save on your summer
energy bill. Use your programmable thermostat to set a schedule that keeps your house coolest during
the hours you’re home and wastes less energy when you’re at work or asleep.
4. Change your AC filter. A dirty filter puts a real strain on your air conditioner, forcing it to work extra hard
and eat up power. Make your AC more efficient and extend its lifespan by changing the filter routinely, especially
in the summer when you use it the most. In the average home, filters should be changed every 60
to 90 days.
5. Let in fresh air at night. Opening a window to let in a cooling breeze can be extremely effective if you
time it right. Keep your windows shut during the heat of the day to let your air conditioner do its job more
efficiently, then open them up at night. In the morning, shut them again to seal in the cool air from the night
before.
6. Keep an eye on cooking. Your stovetop—especially your oven—introduces a lot of heat into your house,
so think twice about cooking and baking on a hot day. Why not prepare more meals outside, instead? After
all, summer is prime time for outdoor grilling and picnicking.
7. Have it made in the shade. You know how good it feels to sit under a shady tree on a sunny day? Well,
apply that principle to your house. Windows tend to create a greenhouse effect, especially if you have big
glass doors or south-facing windows, which means you can block a lot of the sun’s energy by drawing the
blinds and shutting the shades. This really does a lot to ease the burden on your air conditioning!
STRAWBERRY PUNCH
2 cups fresh strawberries
2 cups pineapple juice
4 cups strawberry seltzer water
• Ice
Mint, for garnish
View community calendar for meeting and event dates
1. Hull strawberries. Place in a food processor and process until smooth.
2. Slowly pour strawberry puree through a fine-mesh sieve and into a
2-quart pitcher. The puree will be thick, but push it through the sieve
with a wooden spoon to get as much as possible into the pitcher.
Then pour pineapple juice slowly over the puree remaining in the
sieve. Continue to stir and press through as you pour the pineapple
juice. Discard all leftover strawberry pulp.
3. Pour strawberry seltzer into the pitcher, stirring with the strawberry
puree and pineapple juice until well combined.
4. Add ice to 6 glasses. Pour punch into glasses. Garnish with mint and
fresh strawberries.
