Description
A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison" is a biography written by James E. Seaver, first
published in 1824. The book tells the story of Mary Jemison, a white woman who was taken
captive by Native Americans during the French and Indian War in 1758. Mary Jemison was
adopted by the Seneca tribe and spent the rest of her life living among them, eventually becoming
fully assimilated into their culture and way of life. The biography recounts her experiences as a
captive, her adoption into the Seneca tribe, her marriages, her participation in tribal life and
customs, and her interactions with prominent Native American leaders of the time. The book also
explores Mary Jemison's conflicting loyalties and sense of identity as she straddled the worlds of
the Native Americans and the European settlers.
