Historical Background<br />
A destroyed landscape and 68,000 dead – this<br />
was the result of the fighting at the HUERTGEN<br />
FOREST. During the final phase of World War II<br />
German troops tried to stop the advance of the<br />
Allies into the Rhineland between DÜREN and<br />
MONSCHAU.<br />
At that time, Germans and Americans, Englishmen<br />
and Canadians fell in an extremely confined area –<br />
all being the victims of a war that had already been<br />
lost for one side and won for the other; this battle,<br />
however, did not bring about a decision, it only<br />
prolonged the war and increased suffering.<br />
And this was the course of this costly battle of the<br />
HUERTGEN FOREST:<br />
12 Sep. 1944 Allied troops reach the German<br />
border at AACHEN.<br />
06 Oct. 1944 Beginning of the first defense<br />
battle, the Allies advance towards<br />
GERMETER.<br />
02 Nov. 1944 Beginning of the second defense<br />
battle that went down into history as<br />
the "All Souls' Day Battle" of<br />
VOSSENACK.<br />
16 Nov. 1944 Beginning of the Allies' major attack<br />
towards RUR; DÜREN, JÜLICH,<br />
ESCHWEILER and HUERTGEN<br />
are largely destroyed by Anglo-<br />
American bombers the same day.<br />
Heavy fighting West and East of the<br />
WEISSEN WEHE.<br />
28 Nov. 1944 Allied conquest of HUERTGEN.<br />
30 Jan. 1945 Beginning of the defense battle of<br />
the RUR and URFT Dams.<br />
On 23 February 1945, after one of the war's<br />
bloodiest battles, the Allies resumed their<br />
triumphal march towards COLOGNE. This was the<br />
beginning of the battle of the RHINELAND.<br />
Even 60 years after the end of the terrible conflict,<br />
this traditional march, which has been given the<br />
name of <strong>Huertgen</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>March</strong>, is held annually,<br />
on the 2 nd Saturday in <strong>October</strong>, in remembrance of<br />
the victims, to foster international understanding,<br />
and as a reminder for peace.<br />
The organizer of this memorial march is the Land<br />
Command North Rhine-Westphalia in<br />
cooperation with the Cologne/Aachen district<br />
group of the Bundeswehr Reserve Association<br />
and the local Hürtgenwald Reservist<br />
Association.<br />
