Historical Background
A destroyed landscape and 68,000 dead – this
was the result of the fighting at the HUERTGEN
FOREST. During the final phase of World War II
German troops tried to stop the advance of the
Allies into the Rhineland between DÜREN and
MONSCHAU.
At that time, Germans and Americans, Englishmen
and Canadians fell in an extremely confined area –
all being the victims of a war that had already been
lost for one side and won for the other; this battle,
however, did not bring about a decision, it only
prolonged the war and increased suffering.
And this was the course of this costly battle of the
HUERTGEN FOREST:
12 Sep. 1944 Allied troops reach the German
border at AACHEN.
06 Oct. 1944 Beginning of the first defense
battle, the Allies advance towards
GERMETER.
02 Nov. 1944 Beginning of the second defense
battle that went down into history as
the "All Souls' Day Battle" of
VOSSENACK.
16 Nov. 1944 Beginning of the Allies' major attack
towards RUR; DÜREN, JÜLICH,
ESCHWEILER and HUERTGEN
are largely destroyed by Anglo-
American bombers the same day.
Heavy fighting West and East of the
WEISSEN WEHE.
28 Nov. 1944 Allied conquest of HUERTGEN.
30 Jan. 1945 Beginning of the defense battle of
the RUR and URFT Dams.
On 23 February 1945, after one of the war's
bloodiest battles, the Allies resumed their
triumphal march towards COLOGNE. This was the
beginning of the battle of the RHINELAND.
Even 60 years after the end of the terrible conflict,
this traditional march, which has been given the
name of Huertgen Forest March, is held annually,
on the 2 nd Saturday in October, in remembrance of
the victims, to foster international understanding,
and as a reminder for peace.
The organizer of this memorial march is the Land
Command North Rhine-Westphalia in
cooperation with the Cologne/Aachen district
group of the Bundeswehr Reserve Association
and the local Hürtgenwald Reservist
Association.
