to these interactions with material duean approach where, as much as possible,preconceived notions of form were avoidedand new forms were developed basedon sensory feedback derived from thoseinteractions. The architect Louis Kahn isfamously known for asking a brick what itwants to be. This process was an attemptto find not only that kind of answer, but tohear the questions asked of the designer bythe material.The process resulted in recognizableand not-so-recognizable forms, in tandemwith poetry that evolved with them. Thisallowed the concept of memory and humanlife to enter into the work, creating piecesthat were unique and meditative. Topicssuch as gender, religion, death, and familyarose, creating a charged space between theworks and the writing.A key realization in this work isthe student as the product of education.Referred to as a “reversal” there appear atriad of discoveries in which communicationis much more apparent than is traditionallyrecognized. These conversations occurbetween artist/designer and material,between student and education, andbetween architecture and inhabitant.If given the time and attention, it isconcluded that architecture can be muchmore than simply shelter from the elements2 Tolerance
