Tolerance: Material Conversations on Life & Architecture
Material, architecture, and life are intricately connected. With roots in phenomenology, literature, and sculptural exploration, Tolerance: Material Conversations on Life & Architecture addresses the deeper questions of space-making, and what it means to be in communication with the material world.

I’ve always seen architecture not as anindividual profession, but as a part of lifethat is tied and connected to nearly everyother part. In order to really expand myunderstanding of architecture, I needed tointegrate all the pieces. The following works carve into mypast, and address many ideas and questionsI previously hadn’t the courage to face. Theprocess for the work began with a breakingdown of mental constructs to pave a pathfor a new method of working and thinking.Previous experience had always rewardedme for being 3 steps ahead, for having myeyes set in the future and solving problemsbefore they arose. What I had to come toterms with early on in this work was that inorder to have a conversation with a work, you must be with it in the present, andmove together into the future. Top-downprocesses in which I had previously hadsuccess worked against me. I had to let goof the idea that I knew what it would be andthe forcing of it into that box. It truly had tobecome a conversation.I have chosen to format my works byjuxtaposing images of the physical workswith my writings. My hope is that you willbe able to move into the space betweenthem and fill it with your own thoughtsand memories. This work, if it is to be trulyfelt, will require trust and vulnerability, butmostly a “moving-in” of the reader. I desire6 Tolerance
nothing more than for you to be able toinhabit this work for a while. Slow down, fill it with your memories and experiences, and see what conversations may happen foryou. Tolerance aims to place the observerin a space of meditation and trust withthe works, to let both the residue of theconversation I had with them overlap andoverlay the conversation I hope you willhave with them. I have provided amplewhite space. Fill it however you desire.Preface 7
