Description
It is a small town located in Eastern Kentucky along the border of Virginia, called Fleming-Neon (originally
just Neon.) There were no books specifically on this town before the writing of this book it had only been
mentioned in other local history books.My interest in its history started out with an interest in the High
School Football Team. No one had published any history or records from the team so I set out to find the
answers that I desired. My interest was fueled, in part, by the closing of the school in order to form one
consolidated school with 2 other high schools in our county. Public interest was high in the high school at
Fleming-Neon during that time period and I was blazing the trail to find answers and contribute to a website
that was for the alumni of our school.My interest grew like a snowball over time. I soon became interested in
the history of the town itself. One burning question continually comes up time and time again: How did this
town get its name? Neon is an odd name for a town. A local legend is told by nearly everyone to be the truth
to answer this question, but I have found evidence to the contrary that could shed some light on the dangers
of relying only on oral history. Our town was established during the early 1900s while a coal boom was
hitting the entire region. It didn’t take long to realize that the history of our town was not well preserved. I
have been on a mission to be the one to preserve it. I have spent countless hours examining all I could in old
newspapers, postal records, books, local advertisements, and eye witness interviews. I feel that I have the
most accurate account of the history of this town, the establishment, and the high school and several of the
athletic teams. The research is not complete but it is my hope that by publishing what I do know at this point
that I can motivate others to join in on the search for the facts about our local history.
