Reflecting on the 2007-2008 school year, I feel truly honored to be in a leadership role in a community that gives back<br />

not only through its time, talent and treasure, but also through an expanded generosity encompassing environmental<br />

awareness, intellectual curiosity and cultural inclusiveness. <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> has arguably never been in a stronger<br />

position as a school-<strong>of</strong>-choice for a wide range <strong>of</strong> students and families, and thanks to the generosity <strong>of</strong> our community<br />

at large, the <strong>Academy</strong> is healthy, thriving and poised to succeed in new challenges.<br />

The past fiscal year has been a great achievement for <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, which is no easy task following the triumph<br />

<strong>of</strong> the “Light the Way” Endowment Campaign. But, not surprisingly, our spirited community did not say, “Well thank<br />

goodness that’s over,” but, “What more can I do now?” Alumni, parents, faculty and friends continued to donate<br />

generously to capital and endowment efforts, and NA’s <strong>Annual</strong> Fund total reached an all-time high!<br />

Thank you to all <strong>of</strong> our donors who have joined in the support <strong>of</strong> faculty enhancements, campus preservation, new<br />

technology and special initiatives. This is truly a community <strong>of</strong> students and adults who value curiosity, integrity,<br />

cooperation and collaboration.<br />

After completing my first year as Head <strong>of</strong> School at <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, I truly understand the enthusiasm surrounding<br />

our “Culture <strong>of</strong> Generosity.” I have found this community to be extraordinary in its spirit <strong>of</strong> generosity, from our faculty<br />

and students to our parents and alumni. Although this spirit is evident in all aspects <strong>of</strong> our school, I find it fitting here to<br />

remark on the vital role your generous donations play in contributing to the strength and the stability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

The successful close <strong>of</strong> the $20-million “Light the Way” Endowment Campaign certainly did not quell your collective<br />

passion for giving, as is evident by your support <strong>of</strong> the 2007-2008 <strong>Annual</strong> Fund. The <strong>Annual</strong> Fund is the foundation<br />

<strong>of</strong> philanthropic support to <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. It sustains programs across the board, including scholarship aid, faculty<br />

compensation, curricular innovation, technology enhancements, arts programs and interscholastic athletics. The<br />

ambitious goal was achieved and, indeed exceeded, as we raised nearly $740,000.<br />

Thank you for helping to make my first year at <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> such a success through your volunteer contributions and<br />

your generous giving to our annual fund and endowment endeavors. Your steadfast support enables <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

to remain a leader in independent education as we continually improve and move forward.<br />

The Endowment<br />

<strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>’s endowment is a permanent fund; the principal from contributions is invested by the school and<br />

remains intact. <strong>Annual</strong> income from the fund is then used as a vital source <strong>of</strong> perpetual support for the <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

A strong endowment enables the school to create and sustain its ideal culture and programs, attracting a talented and<br />

A Culture <strong>of</strong> Generosity<br />

The <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> community is extraordinary in its<br />

generosity – from the dedicated members <strong>of</strong> the faculty who<br />

are enthusiastic and caring ... to students who are eager<br />

to embrace and act upon the issues that shape our world ...<br />

to alumni who are pro<strong>of</strong> that a rigorously trained intellect<br />

can be joined with heart ... to parents who are volunteers,<br />

role models and leaders. The <strong>Newark</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> community<br />

collectively embodies a pr<strong>of</strong>ound spirit <strong>of</strong> generosity which<br />

will continue to move the school forward, ever stronger.<br />
