The The Buckeye Buckeye Rose Rose Bulletin
Bulletin
From the Director…
The 2001 rose growing season
may be over, but the tremendous success of the
ARS Fall National Convention is still fresh in
my mind. The long hours of planning by
General Chairmen Bob and Virginia Choate,
John and Diane Jamison, Scott and MJ Bailey,
and Show Co-Chairmen Peter and Susan
Schneider were evident, and my sincere thanks
to each of them for their dedication and
commitment. Special thanks must also be given
to the members of The Forest City and The
Western Reserve Rose Societies as well as the
numerous others who were involved with the
planning and execution of the convention and
show.
At the ARS Board of Director’s Meeting
held on Friday of the convention, a number of
items were discussed and approved. Highlights
include: 1) Region 0 Director, Mike Lowe,
obtained a grant for the purchase of a color laser
printer for ARS headquarters. 2) President, Dr.
Tommy Cairns received a number of letters
from rose societies around the world after the
September 11, 2001 tragedy. Tommy’s
response can be found elsewhere in this bulletin.
ARS has also declared September 11 th as “Rose
Day of Remembrance”. 3) The audit schedule
for Arrangement Judges was reduced from six
to four years. 4) District Consulting Rosarian
Chairs were granted “read only” access to the
ARS Consulting Rosarian database. 5) The
Gulf District will sponsor a David Austin
display garden at the American Rose Center.
A number of Buckeye rosarians found
their exhibits on the trophy table when the rose
show opened its doors, they included: Barbara
Winter 2001
1
& Jim Zimmerman, David & Lois Ackers,
Lyman & Carolyn Johnson, Tim Hartranft, Dr.
Glenn Beck, John Jamison, William & Anita
Solarz, Dick Seibold, Dr. Bruce LeRoy & Dr.
Susan Clingenpeel, Dr. Gary Barlow, Vince
DiCillo, Lauren Toth, Brian Burley, Mary
Kathryn Fraser, Sue Witwer, Cathie Pruden, and
Randy & myself. At the banquet, Gary Barlow
received the first Betty Pavey Trophy for a
modern arrangement. Also at the banquet, three
Buckeye rosarians were honored with ARS
Presidential Citations: Dr. John Dickman,
George Meiling and Bob Choate.
At the Buckeye District Business
Meeting, the following officers were approved
for the coming year: President – Steve Pyrak,
1 st Vice President – Jim Zimmerman, 2 nd Vice
President – Larry Schock, Secretary – Denise
Mraz, and Treasurer – Dr. Susan Clingenpeel.
My thanks to Past President, Brian Burley, for a
job well done. District members voted for the
purposed Buckeye District Perpetual Trophy
honoring hybridizer, Griffith Buck. The award
will be presented for the first time at next year’s
fall district rose show.
The Silver Honor Medal, presented by
Anne Hering, was awarded to Gladys Johnson.
Dr. Jim Hering presented The Outstanding
Judge’s Award to Dr. Lew Shupe, and the
Outstanding Consulting Rosarian was awarded
to Tren Meyer. I presented District Director
Citations for outstanding service for 2001 to Jim
and Barbara Zimmerman, The Forest City Rose
Society, and The Western Reserve Rose
Society. A most deserved congratulations to all
these outstanding Buckeye Rosarians.

The “Year of the Rose – 2002”
celebration is about to begin. I hope that by
now each local society has a calendar of events
planned to promote our national flower, the
rose. This is an excellent opportunity to educate
the public and gain new members in our
societies. The ARS/Home Depot Program is in
its final stages of preparation; Steve Pyrak will
be contacting participating CRs with more
information. YOTR Chair, Peg Newill has been
with working with local society contacts to
develop plans for the yearlong event, and Dr.
Jim Hering with the help of Randy Lady has
finished the YOTR slide presentation. Local
societies are encouraged to publish information
and pictures of activities on the district website
www.buckeyerose.com.
It is time to join, or renew, as a Patron of
the Buckeye District for 2002. This program
supports our on-going efforts and helps to build
a reserve that may be used for special projects.
You may also elect to become a Patron of the
American Rose Society at the same time. I
encourage your consideration in joining others
who are helping in this effort.
Looking ahead, the district has a number
of events planned for 2002. On Saturday,
2
February 23, 2002, CR Chair, Steve Pyrak has
planned a Consulting Rosarian Audit and
School in Columbus at the Franklin Park
Conservatory. A registration form can be found
elsewhere in this bulletin. An Old Garden Rose
Seminar is planned for April 6 th , the day before
the Spring District Meeting. Guest speakers
include Oline Reynolds, George Meiling, Betty
Fagerstrom, and Jon and Lois Weir. We also
plan to have a district slide show this spring
with the results and winners presented at the
district meeting. The Millstream Rose Society
will be the hosts of the 6 th annual Top Gun Club
meeting on July 27, 2002. Finally, the Buckeye
District Fall Conference and Rose Show will be
held September 20-22, 2002 in Marion, Ohio.
A national ARS event will also be held in the
Buckeye state in 2002. The ARS National
Miniature Rose Show and Conference will be
held in Columbus on the weekend of July 12-14,
2002. Details concerning these events can be
found in The Buckeye Rose Bulletin or the
district website.
Best wishes for 2002,
Terri A. Lady
Buckeye District Director
4th Annual All Miniature Show and Convention
By Randy Lady
Columbus was last host to a national convention
in 1992. On July 12 - 14, 2002, Columbus will
again be hosting a national American Rose
Society event - the fourth annual American
Rose Society All-Miniature Rose Conference.
Like the previous three conventions, this will be
a celebration of the miniature rose.
Brian Burley is the convention chairman, and
my wife, Terri, and I are the show cochairpersons.
Along with our committee and
individual chairpersons, we are planning an
action-packed and informative weekend. Like
previous conventions, this will be a weekend
event. Activities will begin Friday evening and
finish Sunday afternoon.
Dennis Bridges will be our featured hydridizer
and will be introducing an new mini rose
honoring a rosarian known by reader’s of
American Rose. I’m sure Dennis and Suzy will
make the weekend even more enjoyable.
The convention will be held at the Holiday Inn
in Worthington, just north of Columbus on the
I270 outerbelt. This is easily accessible from

major interstate highways I70, I75 and I71,
along with the Columbus International Airport.
Special hotel rates will be available for
convention attendees and will be listed in future
editions of American Rose along with the full
schedule. The hotel offers shuttle service and
there are many hotels and restaurants in the
area.
Friday evening will begin with a welcome
reception for everyone to relax, get to know
other mini growers, or catch up with old friends.
Saturday morning will begin bright and early
with the rose show. We are putting together a
full and challenging schedule for all mini rose
exhibitors and arrangers. Remember, mini roses
are easy to bring when traveling.
While judging is proceeding, attendees may take
part in a full day of seminars and presentations.
Some of these will be educational, some will be
question and answer sessions, and others will be
just for fun.
The awards banquet will be held Saturday
evening to honor the show winners of the day
3
along with the 2002 Mini Hall of Fame winners
and 2003 Award of Excellence winners. Of
course, the evening will conclude with lively
socializing and discussion of the show and mini
roses.
Sunday will conclude the convention with a
garden tour of some of the best gardens in
central Ohio. First will be the Columbus Park
of Roses, which features more than 10,000
roses. Sadly, most of these are not miniatures.
We will then proceed to some of the best
gardens of miniature rose growers and
exhibitors in Ohio. We should be back to the
hotel by mid-afternoon to start the journey
home.
I hope all the miniature rose growers and
exhibitors can make the trip to Ohio next July.
If you want some early information or are
interested in participating in the programs,
Response Letter from ARS President, Dr. Tommy Cairns
In response to the many letters of sympathy and
support received from rose societies around the
world after the tragic events of September 11th,
ARS President, Dr. Tommy Cairns issued the
following message:
I am deeply moved by your kind and thoughtful
words in this the darkest days in American
history. From around the world I have been
fortunate to receive, as ARS President, so many
messages from national rose societies
expressing their deep sense of grief for our
losses. These wonderful messages, just like
yours, have given compassion and sympathy to
help us through such dark days.
The rose in our daily lives is always
there…from birth…to marriage…to death. It’s
presence is often understated and rarely
overstated, but it is everywhere chronicling our
lives from the heights of enjoyment and
celebration to the depths of despair and agony.
This week has been the darkest in American
history and I am comforted by the expression of
people to give roses to amplify their grief and
sympathy. Roses are a gift from God and to
share them is wonderful. In this our darkest
hours roses need not be center stage but rather
their quiet presence of beauty, always there,
always present, always comforting, always
reassuring, always a symbol of American life
and liberty…our National Floral Emblem.
All these messages are indeed reassuring in a
time of crisis and mourning. However, like the
phoenix the American people will rebuild from
the ashes with a much higher regard for life and

liberty and the protection of those treasured gifts
from God.
May God Bless America and continue to allow
us to share in the beauty of the rose.
The highest honor for a judge in the Buckeye
District is the Outstanding Judge Award. At the
District Meeting in Cleveland in September the
Award for 2001 was presented to Dr. Lew
Shupe, our former District Chairman of
Arrangement Judges and currently the ARS
National Chairman of Arrangements Judging.
Congratulate Lew when you see him. There are
currently fifty one (51) Accredited, four (4)
Apprentice and eight (8) Emeritus Horticulture
Judges in the Buckeye District. The newest
Accredited Judge is Tom Rubins;
congratulations Tom, we will put you to work.
To maintain our judging accreditation we must
each submit an “Annual Judges Report” and
attend a judging seminar at least once every four
years. We are encouraged to continue to grow
and exhibit roses, to be active judges (at least
five shows every three years) and to participate
in Roses in Review each year by submitting a
report. Your “Annual Judges Report” form for
2001 is enclosed with this Bulletin; we had
100% participation last year, keep it up! Seven
of our Accredited Judges are due to attend a
judging seminar by the end of this year (see the
enclosed judges list for your audit year).
Once we become accredited, the key to
maintaining our judging skills is continuing
education. Most of the items listed in the
previous paragraph are part of continuing ed. –
including growing new varieties and reporting
them in RIR. Our District does an excellent job
of offering us educational opportunities, and I
shall list some that are upcoming. I hope you
will take advantage of them.
Buckeye Judges Corner
By: Dr. Jim Hering, District Judges Chairman
1. Consulting Rosarian Seminar – 2/23/02
(Franklin Park, Columbus) Judges are
usually C.R.’s, but even if you are not,
this seminar will help you as a judge and
an exhibitor.
2. Old Garden Rose Seminar – 4/6/02
(Franklin Park, Columbus) This seminar
is being held in conjunction with the
Buckeye District Spring Meeting
(seminar – Sat.; district meeting – Sun.).
The two-featured speakers are Oline
Reynolds, ARS Region 3 Director from
Bainbridge, Georgia, and our own
George Meiling, past ARS Treasurer.
For Buckeye District Accredited Judges
attending this seminar, the seminar will
satisfy the four-year judging audit
requirement.
3. ARS National Miniature Rose Show and
Conference – 7/12-14/02 (Holiday Inn at
Crosswoods, Worthington) As Chairman
of Judges, I will need judges for the
show – watch for notices in American
Rose and Buckeye Bulletin. Dennis
Bridges will be our banquet speaker.
4. Top Gun Meeting #6 – 7/27/02 (Findlay
– Millstream R.S. host) Top Gun is
about exhibiting, but it is the right stuff
for judges as well. We’ve had some
dandy speakers the past four years –
Ballins, Tucker, Hefner and LeMire
(none the first year) – and this year’s
speaker, Bob Martin, Editor of Rose
Exhibitors Forum, from Pasadena, CA
has impeccable credentials. Bob is the
author of a new book, Showing Good
Roses (A Complete Exhibitors Guide)
which I highly recommend to all

osarians; but especially to exhibitors
and judges. Don’t miss this meeting!
5. Buckeye District Fall Conference and
Rose Show – 9/20-22/02 (Marion –
Garden Club of Marion host) As
Chairman of Judges, I will be inviting
judges from other districts to judge our
show but will also accept Buckeye
Judges. Watch for notice in BB. Our
5
guest speaker will be Marilyn Wellan,
ARS Vice President and National
Chairman of “Year of the Rose – 2002”,
from Colfax, Louisiana.
I am enclosing a complete list of Buckeye
District Judges. Please notify me if there are
any errors.
Winter 2001 Report: Rose Arrangements
The Betty Pavey National Arrangement Award
ARS Rose Show, Cleveland, 2001
By; Dr. Gary Barlow
The “Betty Pavey Say It With Roses Trophy for
Modern Arrangements” was introduced, and
awarded for the first time, at the recent national
conference and rose show of The American
Rose Society. This national award honors Betty
Pavey who, along with her husband Hugh ‘Doc’
Pavey, were life-long residents of Xenia and
were both avid rose growers, consulting
rosarians, exhibitors and active in the Buckeye
District for many years. Betty held many
elected positions in local, state and national rose
societies, including Buckeye District Director,
and the ARS national chairperson of
arrangements. She was a recipient of the
prestigious American Rose Society Gold Medal
for her work at the national level. Her book Say
It With Roses was a major reference for flower
arrangers, and was a basis for the current
American Rose Society judging manual.
Members of the Pavey family traveled to
Cleveland, Ohio to be part of the award
ceremony at the convention banquet. Judy
Pavey L’Amoureux, of Arlington Heights,
Photo submitted by Lew Shupe, permission to reprint
10
Illinois (daughter of Doc and Betty) presented
the award, assisted by Dr. Lew Shupe, national
ARS arrangement chair. Suzanne L’Amoureux
(granddaughter) also from Arlington Heights,
and Betty’s sister Patricia and her husband
James Crawfis of Mansfield, Ohio, also
attended.
The recipient of this award was Dr. Gary
Barlow of Fairborn, Ohio, past District Director,
and currently the Buckeye District Arrangement
Chair. His design was a modern style vertical
arrangement using a metal sculpture, driftwood,
vertical foliage and ‘Suffolk’ and ‘Louise Estes’
roses.
The trophy will be presented once a year
throughout the various regions in the United
States, honoring the top modern challenge class
arrangement in the American Rose Society
sanctioned rose shows. This award will next be
presented in the North/South Carolina District in
2002.

The “Year of the Rose – 2002” is an opportunity
for all of the members of the Buckeye District to
spread the good news that the Rose is our floral
emblem and at the same time open the doors to
non-rosarians to enter and become active in our
societies. The rose is known to be the most
popular of florist flowers and there are many
who would like to grow them yet need
encouragement and direction to be successful
growers.
Contact your local service clubs and volunteer
to do a program featuring roses. Put your name
on the list in your community as a speaker for
garden clubs, arboretums, city parks, adult
school lectures, school land lab instruction, and
library lecture series and youth clubs (sharing a
miniature rose with each of the youths
involved). Please share your suggestions with
your Buckeye YOTR Chairman (Peg Newill) so
that we can enlarge our vision of participation
during this special year dedicated to our national
flower, the rose. She will send these
suggestions to all the YOTR chairs within the
Buckeye District.
For the beginner we need to help them. 1.
Choose hardy, disease resistant roses for their
first venture. 2. Discuss rose culture in simple
terms. 3. Offer organic gardening solutions for
those who prefer to continue to use this method
of arboricultural. 4. Review a list of roses that
will enhance their home landscape and
placement in the microclimate available in their
yard. 5. If fragrance is a priority in their
landscape, them give them a list of roses to plant
to meet this need. 6. Bust most important of all
is to LISTEN and give them an answer in as
YOTR – OUR OPPORTUNITY
By Peg Newill
11
simple a format as possible to encourage their
participation in growing our favorite flower, the
rose.
Do your remember the Buckeye District
Certificate that requires a library exhibit
featuring “The Year of the Rose – 2002”? Take
your photos and send me (Peg Newill address
below) a brief description describing how it was
developed – was it a club project – did you gain
new members – and the page or pages where the
public signed as having viewed it. Clubs who
receive certificates will be listed in the Spring
2003 Buckeye Rose Bulletin and their photos
displayed at the Fall 2002 Buckeye District
meeting. Member clubs that construct or
refurbish a community Rose Garden will also be
candidates for a certificate. Dr. Gary Barlow
will direct this project throughout Region 4.
Send Gary a picture of the Rose Garden and a
brief write up on its impact in the community.
Review the Buckeye Time Line for involvement
as listed on the Buckeye web site:
www.buckeyerose.com. Ask your local society
YOTR chairperson for a copy of this list if email
is not easily available to you.
This opportunity is a gift to your club so open it
and make it grow. What your club reaps will far
exceed the effort put forth by your members and
the rose world will be richer because of your
participation.
With appreciation for your support,
Peg Newill, Buckeye YOTR Chr., 10245
Virginia Lee Dr, Dayton, OH 45458-4424

The Year of the Rose – 2002 celebration needs
to be promoted in our local communities as well
as nationally by American Rose Society
members. Every Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis
Club, as well as every civic, social and
professional organization, is a natural place to
spread the word about YOTR – 2002.
A 73-slide program with script has been
developed explaining YOTR – 2002, ARS, the
history of the rose, types of roses for the home
garden and the rose industry. The program has
also been put on a disk for digital projection.
The program presentation takes about 25
minutes, which is perfect for service clubs.
Multiple copies of the program have been
produced and will be available in the Buckeye
District beginning December 2001. For a
program copy, contact Lori Hilfer in the
Cleveland area, ? in the Columbus area and
YOTR Slide Program
12
Tren Meyer in the Cincinnati area. Program
copies are also available from Peg Newill, Terri
Lady and myself.
Contact your local service club and ask to be put
on its program schedule for early in 2002.
Service clubs and other organizations are
looking for programs like this.
I am soliciting ARS members to be part of a
Speakers’ Bureau to give this presentation at
district, regional or national meetings of
commercial, professional or service
organizations. If you are willing to participate,
please contact me.
“Year of the Rose” – 2002 Ornament
In 2001, the American Rose Society asked the
National Garden Clubs to participate with them
in celebrating the “Year of the Rose – 2002”.
This relationship became a reality and the
National Garden Clubs moved forward to
promote the rose. One of the ways they chose
to do this was by designing an ornament
(limited edition) and making it available through
their member services to anyone for $15.00 plus
the handling and shipping at $2.50. Our
Buckeye YOTR chairman, Peg Newill, is the
liaison for the National Garden Clubs to the
ARS. She is able to make this ornament
available to the Buckeye District members, if
purchased directly from her, at the next Buckeye
District meeting without the packing and
shipping charge of $2.50. No mail orders will
be taken. Description of the ornament is written
below:
The 2002 gold-finished ornament features red
and white roses to celebrate the “Year of the
Rose – 2002”. The roses extend from the frame
for a three dimensional effect. The Capitol
building is touched with white, and arched
above are the words: “America! America! God
Shed His Grace On Thee”. A red, white and
blue ribbon is attached for hanging, and the
ornament is displayed in a blue box, giving a
patriotic look. This makes a beautiful gift for
family or friends. It can also be purchased in
our White House gift shop.
