The Buckeye Rose Bulletin - Buckeye District

The “Year of the Rose – 2002”
celebration is about to begin. I hope that by
now each local society has a calendar of events
planned to promote our national flower, the
rose. This is an excellent opportunity to educate
the public and gain new members in our
societies. The ARS/Home Depot Program is in
its final stages of preparation; Steve Pyrak will
be contacting participating CRs with more
information. YOTR Chair, Peg Newill has been
with working with local society contacts to
develop plans for the yearlong event, and Dr.
Jim Hering with the help of Randy Lady has
finished the YOTR slide presentation. Local
societies are encouraged to publish information
and pictures of activities on the district website
www.buckeyerose.com.
It is time to join, or renew, as a Patron of
the Buckeye District for 2002. This program
supports our on-going efforts and helps to build
a reserve that may be used for special projects.
You may also elect to become a Patron of the
American Rose Society at the same time. I
encourage your consideration in joining others
who are helping in this effort.
Looking ahead, the district has a number
of events planned for 2002. On Saturday,

February 23, 2002, CR Chair, Steve Pyrak has
planned a Consulting Rosarian Audit and
School in Columbus at the Franklin Park
Conservatory. A registration form can be found
elsewhere in this bulletin. An Old Garden Rose
Seminar is planned for April 6 th , the day before
the Spring District Meeting. Guest speakers
include Oline Reynolds, George Meiling, Betty
Fagerstrom, and Jon and Lois Weir. We also
plan to have a district slide show this spring
with the results and winners presented at the
district meeting. The Millstream Rose Society
will be the hosts of the 6 th annual Top Gun Club
meeting on July 27, 2002. Finally, the Buckeye
District Fall Conference and Rose Show will be
held September 20-22, 2002 in Marion, Ohio.
A national ARS event will also be held in the
Buckeye state in 2002. The ARS National
Miniature Rose Show and Conference will be
held in Columbus on the weekend of July 12-14,
2002. Details concerning these events can be
found in The Buckeye Rose Bulletin or the
district website.

4th Annual All Miniature Show and Convention

Columbus was last host to a national convention
in 1992. On July 12 - 14, 2002, Columbus will
again be hosting a national American Rose
Society event - the fourth annual American
Rose Society All-Miniature Rose Conference.
Like the previous three conventions, this will be
a celebration of the miniature rose.
Brian Burley is the convention chairman, and
my wife, Terri, and I are the show cochairpersons.
Along with our committee and
individual chairpersons, we are planning an
action-packed and informative weekend. Like
previous conventions, this will be a weekend
event. Activities will begin Friday evening and
finish Sunday afternoon.
Dennis Bridges will be our featured hydridizer
and will be introducing an new mini rose
honoring a rosarian known by reader’s of
American Rose. I’m sure Dennis and Suzy will
make the weekend even more enjoyable.
The convention will be held at the Holiday Inn
in Worthington, just north of Columbus on the
