The highest honor for a judge in the Buckeye District is the Outstanding Judge Award. At the District Meeting in Cleveland in September the Award for 2001 was presented to Dr. Lew Shupe, our former District Chairman of Arrangement Judges and currently the ARS National Chairman of Arrangements Judging. Congratulate Lew when you see him. There are currently fifty one (51) Accredited, four (4) Apprentice and eight (8) Emeritus Horticulture Judges in the Buckeye District. The newest Accredited Judge is Tom Rubins; congratulations Tom, we will put you to work. To maintain our judging accreditation we must each submit an “Annual Judges Report” and attend a judging seminar at least once every four years. We are encouraged to continue to grow and exhibit roses, to be active judges (at least five shows every three years) and to participate in Roses in Review each year by submitting a report. Your “Annual Judges Report” form for 2001 is enclosed with this Bulletin; we had 100% participation last year, keep it up! Seven of our Accredited Judges are due to attend a judging seminar by the end of this year (see the enclosed judges list for your audit year). Once we become accredited, the key to maintaining our judging skills is continuing education. Most of the items listed in the previous paragraph are part of continuing ed. – including growing new varieties and reporting them in RIR. Our District does an excellent job of offering us educational opportunities, and I shall list some that are upcoming. I hope you will take advantage of them. 4 Regards Tommy Cairns Buckeye Judges Corner By: Dr. Jim Hering, District Judges Chairman 1. Consulting Rosarian Seminar – 2/23/02 (Franklin Park, Columbus) Judges are usually C.R.’s, but even if you are not, this seminar will help you as a judge and an exhibitor. 2. Old Garden Rose Seminar – 4/6/02 (Franklin Park, Columbus) This seminar is being held in conjunction with the Buckeye District Spring Meeting (seminar – Sat.; district meeting – Sun.). The two-featured speakers are Oline Reynolds, ARS Region 3 Director from Bainbridge, Georgia, and our own George Meiling, past ARS Treasurer. For Buckeye District Accredited Judges attending this seminar, the seminar will satisfy the four-year judging audit requirement. 3. ARS National Miniature Rose Show and Conference – 7/12-14/02 (Holiday Inn at Crosswoods, Worthington) As Chairman of Judges, I will need judges for the show – watch for notices in American Rose and Buckeye Bulletin. Dennis Bridges will be our banquet speaker. 4. Top Gun Meeting #6 – 7/27/02 (Findlay – Millstream R.S. host) Top Gun is about exhibiting, but it is the right stuff for judges as well. We’ve had some dandy speakers the past four years – Ballins, Tucker, Hefner and LeMire (none the first year) – and this year’s speaker, Bob Martin, Editor of Rose Exhibitors Forum, from Pasadena, CA has impeccable credentials. Bob is the author of a new book, Showing Good Roses (A Complete Exhibitors Guide) which I highly recommend to all
osarians; but especially to exhibitors and judges. Don’t miss this meeting! 5. Buckeye District Fall Conference and Rose Show – 9/20-22/02 (Marion – Garden Club of Marion host) As Chairman of Judges, I will be inviting judges from other districts to judge our show but will also accept Buckeye Judges. Watch for notice in BB. Our 5 guest speaker will be Marilyn Wellan, ARS Vice President and National Chairman of “Year of the Rose – 2002”, from Colfax, Louisiana. I am enclosing a complete list of Buckeye District Judges. Please notify me if there are any errors.
