Everyone has access to every fleet, and the industry is built

on relationships and trust, between operators, brokers, and

clients.

free to you, the client.

and base staff all committed to sharing our knowledge and

passion to provide the best service we can. And you can always

THE PERSONAL TOUCH

When you enquire with Helm, either in person, over the

a personal charter broker, who will be your point of contact

throughout your holiday booking process.

Our team offer guidance, answer questions, suggest

itineraries and prepare you for your yacht charter.

You’re welcome to come and see us in our central London

HELM

HOW TO PLAN THE ULTIMATE

YACHT CHARTER

There is no better way to see the world than from

the water, but knowing where to start can be tough.

That’s where we come in!

SKIPPERED YACHT CHARTER

Ideal for those who have no sailing experience, or who just

want to kick back and relax.

An experienced skipper will take care of the sailing and boat

for you; they can share local knowledge and sail you safely to

your chosen destinations.

CREWED YACHT CHARTER

A popular option for those who want to experience luxury.

Crewed yacht charter destinations cover glamorous locations

like Sardinia and St Tropez.

Crewed charters are available across a range of yachts, from

catamarans to motor yachts.

The crew takes care of shopping, cooking and tidying, leaving

you free to relax and soak up the sun.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING?

The best place to start when planning your next holiday is to

figure out when you want to go.

The Mediterranean sailing season runs from April to October,

while the Caribbean’s peak season is from December to

March, and when you set sail depends on a few different factors

such as weather, sea conditions and pricing.

Summer is the most popular time for a western Mediterranean

yacht charter, generally because the weather is hot,

the water warm and the coastal areas in full swing: festivals,

markets and bustling restaurants and bars. But it can also be

great for a cooler Caribbean adventure (27C on average). The

‘shoulder’ months have plenty to offer too.

WHAT TYPE OF HOLIDAY?

Next, you’ll need to think about what type of trip you’re after

and what sort of yacht you want. Are you looking for a sailing

yacht, a catamaran, a motor yacht, or a more luxury superyacht?

When it comes to private yacht charter, there are three options

- Bareboat, Skippered, or Crewed.

Bareboat charter is great for adventurous sailors, skippered

charter allows everyone to take to the water, while a crewed

yacht is a more luxurious option, with a crew looking after

your needs.

DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT FROM

YOUR TRIP

What sort of charter guests are you? Do you want to do a lot

of sightseeing and visit interesting heritage sites? Or are you

looking to visit some sandy beaches and soak up the sun and

views?

Perhaps you are a food enthusiast, hoping to seek out the delicious

tastes of Italy, Greece or Croatia. Or a large family looking

for some action-packed adventure?

If you are sailing with a group of friends, discussing what you

expect from your holiday will ensure that compromises are

found and that everyone has the perfect experience.

LET THE EXPERTS HELP YOU

Planning a charter can be daunting, which is why we always

recommend that you get in touch with the experts. Here at

Helm, we are able to assist you at every stage of your planning

process.

Once you’re ready to charter a yacht, simply tell us where you’d

like to go, how many people in your group, and what you want

to get out of your holiday, and we can find your ideal yacht and

design a bespoke package and itinerary, tailored to you and

your requirements.

This takes away any stress, and ensures that you get the most

out of your trip.

BAREBOAT YACHT CHARTER

Great for sailors who hold a skipper’s licence and are able to sail.

Grants you the freedom to travel wherever you choose at your

own pace. A bareboat yacht charter also gives you the chance

to plan your own itinerary - a fun and exciting process, especially

in more remote areas like the Dodecanese islands.

WHAT IS A BAREBOAT

YACHT CHARTER?

The first question many people have when looking to book a

sailing holiday is: what is a bareboat charter, and how does it

work?

A bareboat charter does what it says on the tin; you charter

the full ‘bare’ boat, and supply your own crew to sail her. This

is of course a little simplified, as the boat does come fully

equipped, with sails and all necessary bits and bobs, but it

helps illustrate the core concept.

Bareboat charters put you in complete control of the itinerary,

and can be the perfect choice for those looking for a dose of

true freedom. They’re the perfect choice for experienced

sailors looking to explore a region in more detail, or those

returning to a favourite sailing ground.

Here’s our guide to the absolute freedom of bareboat yacht

charters.

WHY CHOOSE A BAREBOAT

CHARTER?

What are the advantages of bareboat chartering?

FREEDOM

A bareboat charter gives sailors a much greater degree of

freedom than holidaying on a skippered yacht. You’ll take the

helm and go where you please, at your own pace.

As you’re in charge of the itinerary, you can also have fun

plotting your route for the holiday, involving as many of

the crew as you like, researching the best places to visit and

creating a sailing holiday that is uniquely yours.

PRIVACY

Bareboat charters have the added benefit of complete privacy.

With no one but yourself and your friends and/or family on

board, bareboat charters are the perfect private getaway.

HASSLE-FREE SAILING

Owning a yacht is an expensive endeavour, especially for

sailors who can’t spend a huge amount of time using and

caring for their yachts. A bareboat charter offers you the

perfect compromise, as you can stretch your sea legs without

investing time and effort into maintaining a depreciating

asset.

Chartering also grants you access to the newest yachts

around, so you can enjoy the best of cutting-edge yacht

design developments.

CHOICE

Most bareboat charters involve sailing yachts, either

monohulls or catamarans, but if power is more your thing,

there are a wide variety of bareboat motorboats available,

too. There are literally thousands of bareboat yachts available

in the world, available in all sorts of type, size and layout.

That’s where our industry knowledge and expert

recommendations come in, to help you choose the right yacht

for your group.

DO I NEED ANY

QUALIFICATIONS TO

BAREBOAT CHARTER?

Yes. Because of the responsibility placed on the skipper’s

shoulders, in order to charter a bareboat, you will need at

least some form of sailing experience with a boat of a similar

to size.

On top of this, you’ll likely need some form of qualification

or sailing license as an example of your skills on the

water. Generally speaking, you’ll need to hold at least an

International Certificate of Competence (ICC) in order to

bareboat charter in Europe, and the rest of the world is at

various stages of adopting similar legislation.

All RYA qualifications from Day Skipper upwards are also

acceptable, and in Croatia they expect at least one person on

board to have a VHF licence, too.

CERTIFICATES ACCEPTED WORLDWIDE INCLUDE:

• ●International Certificate of Competence

• RYA Coastal Skipper

• RYA Yachtmaster

• ASA 104

12

13

But don’t worry - if you don’t have the necessary experience

yet, a skippered or crewed charter is still an excellent option

for your sailing holiday.

ON ARRIVAL

When you get to the base, you’ll go through a check-in process

(remember to bring your certificate as this will needed

as proof of competence) and a thorough yacht and safety

briefing. A member of the team will take you through the

operation of all yacht systems, from the engine to the heads

to the air conditioning.

The briefing will also cover all safety aspects, from flares to

lifejackets. It is your opportunity to check that everything

works, and ask the base team any questions you may have

about the yacht, or your sailing area.

Once this is completed and all paperwork signed, you’ll be free

to set off on your bareboat adventure.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

There are several factors to consider when looking to charter

a bareboat yacht. By acting as the skipper, you are responsible

for the safety of both yacht and crew. You’ll also be in charge of

plotting the route, and manoeuvring the yacht under sail and

engine.

So make sure you’re familiar with what to do in the case of

emergency, and listen carefully to the briefing at the start of

your charter. Different sailing areas use different methods

of mooring, so you’ll need to know the difference between

mooring stern or bows-to in the Mediterranean, dropping

anchor in Thailand and picking up a mooring ball in the British

Virgin Islands.

As most countries now require bareboat skippers to hold a

valid sailing licence, it is important that you make sure your

licence is up to date, and remember to bring your certificate

with you when you go. If you’re unsure about any of the finer

details of bareboat hire, we’re on hand for any questions you

may have.

HELM

TYPES OF TRIPS

SKIPPERED

If you’re new to sailing or just want to

put your feet up while on holiday, a skippered

charter is the answer.

£5,000 - £20,000 P/W

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Your skipper will be there to meet you and your group when

you check in to your chosen yacht, and be responsible for

sailing you to your chosen destinations for the duration of

your holiday. You can sit back and relax for the entire time or

learn some sailing skills, with the skipper showing you the

ropes.

A skippered yacht charter is more about the holiday than the

sailing. Having someone else at the helm lets you make the

most of everything else a yachting holiday offers – swimming

off the back of the boat, snorkelling, sunbathing on deck or

relaxing in a hammock.

How far you go each day will depend on your itinerary, but on

average the skipper will sail the yacht for three to four hours

a day, stopping for lunch on the way. In the evening, you will

dock at a port or harbour and are free to either eat on board or

go out for dinner.

We provide suggested itineraries for each destination, but

you are welcome to adapt these as you please. Our advice is

that you sit down with the skipper at the start of your trip and

work out your preferred route. Also, if you have any specific

ideas for activities – such as trying out water sports or visiting

places of interest en route – just ask the skipper and he can

advise on where to go.

WHERE CAN I SAIL?

Skippered yachts are available at all our destinations, from

the Mediterranean to the British Virgin Islands, the Caribbean

and Thailand.

WHAT SORT OF YACHT

SHOULD I OPT FOR?

Your skipper will sleep on board with you, so you will need

to allocate them a cabin. Otherwise, the type of yacht you

choose is up to you. Your HELM broker will offer tailored

recommendations based on your group and any specific

requests you have.

SHOULD I ADD A HOSTESS

TOO?

A skippered charter is a self-catered holiday, so you will need

to buy enough provisions for your group and the skipper. These

will include food, drink, cleaning products and toilet rolls.

If you’d like a hand with the catering, you can add a hostess.

They will keep your yacht clean, prepare drinks and snacks as

well as help with the shopping. A hostess would prepare two

light meals a day (usually breakfast and lunch) as well as two

dinners during the trip. Bear in mind they too will need their

own cabin.

The skipper is a qualified sailor whose job is to take care of

the sailing and make your holiday as enjoyable and relaxing

as possible, allowing you to join in with as much or as little

hands-on sailing as you wish.

This guide will hopefully answer all your skipper-related

questions.

14

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT

ON A SKIPPERED YACHT

CHARTER?

CHOICE OF STUNNING DESTINATIONS

• Freedom to create your own itinerary

• Chance to relax on board and leave the sailing to a

professional

• An opportunity to learn some sailing basics under

instruction from the skipper

• Inside knowledge from a local expert who can take you

to the best beaches and secluded bays

• Privacy

WHO ARE THE SKIPPERS?

Our skippers are professional sailors. They have excellent local

knowledge, so can make recommendations on where to go

and what to see. This gives you a huge advantage – they know

where the best spot is for a tranquil lunch in a secluded bay

and the best restaurants in town when you dock at night. They

will even book you a table.

15

ANYTHING ELSE TO BE

AWARE OF?

The skipper is there to sail the boat and will always respect

your privacy. That said, in our experience, our guests form a

genuine bond with the skipper during their holiday and are

often sad to say goodbye!

Tipping is customary but not obligatory. It is greatly

appreciated by the skipper and hostess, who will consistently

go above and beyond to make you happy. We generally

recommend 5-15% of the charter price.

Nothing compares to the exquisite

freedom of travelling by luxury yacht

HELM

TYPES OF TRIPS

CREWED

£20,000 - £1,000,000 +

A crewed yacht usually comes with a crew of captain, chef,

hostesses and deckhands, and is all about relaxing in ultimate

tranquility while your every need is catered for. Crewed yacht

charters allow you to explore a lot more of a country than you

would on land, with five-star service every step of the way.

You can island-hop your way to a different sensational

destination every day, from the British Virgin Islands to the

French Riviera, Balearic islands and even South Pacific. The

professional crew makes the experience all the more special.

If you’re not sure how it works, read on for everything you can

expect from a crewed charter.

WHAT TYPE OF BOAT

SHOULD I CHARTER?

Your HELM charter broker will be able to help you pick the

right option to create your dream crewed yacht charter.

Crewed yacht charters are available on a selection of vessels,

from refined motor yachts to beamy catamaran options with

plenty of outdoor space.

A luxury motor yacht affords you the greatest space, alongside

the ability to cover large distances with a larger group, and

more crew support.

You can also charter a large sailing yacht if you’re after the

thrill of sailing with all the trimmings of a crewed charter.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Each crew member will be there to cater to your every need

but will always be professional and respect your privacy. They

can give you as much space as you wish, and staff quarters are

separate from the guest bedrooms and living spaces.

The crew will take care of sailing, maintenance, cooking and

cleaning. The shopping is usually done before you set off -

simply fill out the preferences form, and the crew will stock

the yacht with any food or drinks you would like on board.

All charter guest food and drink costs are covered by the

Advanced Provisioning Allowance, or APA, a fee payable

alongside your final charter balance. Any amount left in this

‘kitty’ at the end of your luxury charter will be returned to you.

WHAT IS AN APA?

Applied to crewed yacht charters, the APA covers provisioning

(food and drink), fuel, mooring fees and other incidental costs

incurred on your holiday. It is a refundable amount due at the

same time as the final charter balance and is usually between

25-35% of the charter cost. Anything not spent, you’ll get back

at the end of your charter.

The APA makes the entire charter experience as smooth as

possible - you simply fill out a preference sheet with your

favourite food and drinks, likes and dislikes, and any special

requests, and the crew stocks the boat with everything you

could want for your charter.

This is an easy, effective and flexible option that works well for

crewed yachts where the chef needs to buy ingredients and

set out menus in advance.

An APA can be particularly useful if your group have any

special dietary requirements, or if you have any special

requests, for example, if you would like a particular imported

spirit or exotic fruit. Anything not spent will be returned to

you at the end of the charter.

ADVANTAGES OF A

CREWED YACHT

COMFORT

Luxury crewed yachts are always a fabulous place to spend a

vacation, whether mega yacht, motor yacht or sailing yacht. It

doesn’t get more luxurious than relaxing on your own private

yacht charter with a dedicated crew making sure everything

is just right.

From chef cooked meals to champagne on ice, the crew can

arrange anything you need. Enjoy water sports, excursions

and pristine beaches in the daytime, followed by a sumptuous

tasting menu and a go in the hot tub before you turn in to your

opulent master cabin for the night.

RELAXATION

Most people would list relaxation as the number one reason

for going on holiday, and that’s taken to another level if you

have a crew to help.

No cooking or washing up to worry about, and a chef to cook

exactly what you like.

EXTRA ACTIVITIES

A luxury yacht charter can have space for all sorts of extras,

depending on the size. A crew member can assist you with

watersports from jet skiing to snorkelling or water skiing, and

they can be on hand to give you insider tips on the local area.

Most charter crews are experts in the area you will be

navigating, so expect tons of insider knowledge about

activities, local customs and the best hidden coves and

pristine beaches that will be unknown to most tourists.

WHERE TO SAIL, WHEN

Timing is everything

The best place to start when planning your next holiday is to

figure out when you want to go, as this will have a big bearing

on where best suits you, from the western Mediterranean to

countries further South and East, or possibly the Caribbean

during the northern hemisphere winter.

Read on for a few tips on the best time to sail for you.

APRIL, MAY, JUNE

If you want to avoid the masses of tourists and enjoy more of a

private yacht charter, setting sail during Spring is a good idea,

especially in Italy.

The weather is warming up, and is enough to soak up some

coastal sun, while the water is a comfortable swimming temperature.

A great time for a charter in the West Mediterranean. Explore

your chosen Balearic Island, or enjoy a luxury yacht charter

from Porto Cervo, Sardinia and head across to visit Corsica.

JULY TO AUGUST

July and August are the Mediterranean’s busiest yacht charter

months, as this is when the European school summer holidays

fall.

If you are going on a family holiday with children, this is the

best time to sail.

The weather is at its warmest across the region, there are

plenty of hours of daylight, and the summertime festivities

are fully underway. It’s also when the more luxury charter

yachts are most likely to be fully booked up.

You’ll be guaranteed great weather wherever you go - choose

from the Aegean sea or Ionian islands in Greece; any of Croatia’s

diverse Dalmatian coast; or Sicily’s volcanic Aeolian islands

- all at their ultimate at this time of year.

SEPTEMBER TO OCTOBER

Catch the last of the summer sun from September to October.

During these months the climate is generally still warm (in

fact, the increased breeze makes it more appealing to some),

you have a far greater choice of anchorages, and tourist numbers

are greatly reduced.

Late in the season, the best conditions can be found further

south and in the East Mediterranean, towards the Dodecanese

Greek Islands and the Turquoise Coast.

The South Pacific, Caribbean

Spring is a time for the optimists among us sailors. Frosts have melted

off the foredeck, the gloom of winter is lifting, flowers are coming into

Now’s the time to dust off the sailing shorts and go on an adventure.

From Tonga to Sweden, and the BVI to the Seychelles, some of the

world’s most magical sailing areas are beckoning.

Here is our pick of spring’s blooming best yacht charter holidays.

MARCH

March is the ideal time to nip across the Atlantic and revel in consistent

MAY

Mediterranean begins to warm up and conditions are mild and

comfortable. Get ahead of the crowds, and if you can dodge half term

Croatia, Greece, Spain, Italy,

The BVI

The European summer is prime time for a sailing holiday in guaranteed

Mediterranean, whether Greece, Croatia, Italy, Spain or Turkey.

Don’t rule out going a little further, though. There are some superb

deals to be had in the Caribbean at this time of year, and the weather

is sublime. The British Virgin Islands are dry and warm (28˚C) in June

and July, and an exceptional option for those who want to explore

somewhere a little more exotic.

BEST PLACES TO SAIL IN JUNE

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

JUNE

June is one of our favourite times of year to sail in the Mediterranean; the

season has just got into full flow, the restaurants have an atmosphere

without being crowded, the temperatures are warm, without being

hot, and the water is refreshingly pleasant for swimming.

JULY

seek out cooling afternoon breezes!

AUGUST

August is the peak of the sailing holiday season, as it is the only time

most families are able to get away. The weather gets pretty hot, and air

con is a very valuable extra. Some choose to keep cool by heading for

places with stronger winds, like the Cyclades, but we only recommend

this for experienced and skilled sailors, as the Meltemi can blow in

Seychelles and Thailand, the late season is the time to go if you want

to avoid large summer crowds while enjoying the very best yachting

the world has to offer.

SEPTEMBER

September is a fantastic time to sail in the Mediterranean, as the

crowds have faded away, and although it is still warm, it’s no longer the

stifling heat of mid-summer. The Eastern Med in particular keeps its

warmth and winds until the middle of October, and is a glorious place

to enjoy an Indian summer. The waters are also at their warmest, and

swimming in secluded bays is a real treat.

OCTOBER

October was made for far-flung adventures, from the jungle-fringed,

emerald-green Andaman Sea to the swirling sands of Australia’s

Whitsundays. These are the best sailing areas off the beaten track.

24

NOVEMBER

November, well clear of the hurricane season and before the peak

February. Here’s our pick of the best places to get some winter sun sailing

done.

DECEMBER

December is when the Caribbean season really gets going; the trade

winds have settled into a familiar pattern and the weather is very pleasant

for the whole month. The region’s driest month is also among its

coolest, but with an average temperature of 27˚C across the chain, it’s

definitely not cold!

JANUARY

The best way to beat the January blues and charge into the new year

full of energy is to take a yacht charter holiday somewhere truly spectacular.

January is a great time to explore off the beaten track, going to

far-flung sailing areas that really offer something a little different to

your average Mediterranean or Caribbean sailing holiday.

FEBRUARY

February’s flexibility makes it a very appealing time to go on

a sailing holiday. The Caribbean sailing season is in full swing,

with simply glorious sailing conditions all month long. Meanwhile,

stable summer winds have settled in Southeast Asia,

making this a perfect time to head east or west. February is

ideal for a spot of sailing, diving and exploring the mystical

jungles and friendly welcomes Thailand has to offer.

ESCAPE THE COLD!

If that’s whetted your appetite for an exotic escape from

the winter months, we’re on hand to help you plot your

next holiday.

HELM

CHOOSE THE

RIGHT BOAT

One of the most frequently asked questions we are

asked is ‘what sort of boat should I charter’? At

HELM we offer four different types – sailing boat,

catamaran, motor boat and gulet. None are better

than another; it all depends on what’s most suitable

for the type of holiday you have planned.

Here we look at the different options to consider

which will help you make up your mind.

MONOHULLS

You can’t beat a monohull for the full sailing experience. If

you’re going for the bareboat option and want to stretch your

sailing skills, then we’d definitely recommend it. Alternatively,

let the crew take the strain and just enjoy the ride!

Modern charter sailing boats will seem more snug than a

catamaran, but are well designed to create the maximum

living and storage space inside. Another plus is that sailing

boats generally cost less than catamarans to charter.

MOTOR YACHT

For glamour, speed and luxury, a motor boat can’t be beaten!

This would be the perfect option for a family or group of

friends who are not looking to undertake long passages

of open-water but have a boat which can zip around a

destination, dropping anchor in a secluded bay for an

afternoon of swimming and sunbathing. Bear in mind the

fuel costs though if you are on a budget.

CATAMARANS

Twin-hulled boats are the perfect choice if you want a holiday

where the emphasis is on comfort, luxury and convenience

rather than a challenging sailing experience. Although due to

their large size, they will cost more than a single hull to berth.

Catamarans do not heel over more than 5 degrees. Just right

for the new or inexperienced sailors or those prone to sea

sickness!

Their shallow draft allows you to sail in much more shallow

waters than a yacht, which means you can anchor close at

shore – handy for the beach or if you want to go snorkelling in

caves and grottos. Catamarans have speed when you need it,

too. Downwind, catamarans can go remarkably fast, plus they

have the advantage of twin engines, when required.

GULET

These traditional two- or three-masted sailing vessels make

for a magnificent base for a special holiday with a group of

friends or family.

Powered mainly by engine, they also have really good sailing

capability – and will always be piloted by a professional crew.

Drawing admiring glances wherever you go, a gulet is the

ultimate timeless sailing experience.

NEED MORE HELP?

If you are still unsure, contact us at HELM to help you decide.

We only choose boats that are in excellent condition, and we

are here to help you every step of the way and to make sure

the whole process is as easy as possible.

CYCLADES

SARONIC

The Cyclades are best

known for the hedonistic

isles of Mykonos and

Santorini, but they are

comprised of nearly

200 islands each with

its own unique feel and

character.

Overlooked by the magnificent Acropolis

and iconic Parthenon temple, Athens is

home to an extraordinary amount of

history, culture, and art.

With brilliant sugar-cube villages, rugged natural beauty and

cosmopolitan style, these dramatic Greek islands have so

much to offer.

Lavrion is the ideal starting point for a skippered or bareboat

yacht charter, with its great selection of yachts, easy

accessibility from Athens and proximity to the islands.

The famous Meltemi winds can make for some exhilarating

sailing, particularly in August. The Cyclades are a perfect

destination to explore either early or late in the season, when

the breeze is still fun but more manageable.

Further apart than the islands in other Greek cruising grounds,

a Cyclades charter will include some longer passages.

Europe’s oldest city also has a modern sophistication,

characterised by lively street life, cosmopolitan hotels and

swanky bars.

After enjoying the city set out on your Athens yacht charter to

explore the beautiful Saronic Islands of Aegina, Hydra, Spetses

and Poros. Lying on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese

Peninsula, these islands offer unspoiled anchorages,

Byzantine castles, and quayside tavernas.

While the Meltemi wind does get strong during August, the

Saronic Islands are more sheltered than the Cyclades, offering

great but manageable sailing for the whole season.

• Fly to: Athens International Airport

• Iconic city, Ancient Greek temples and ruins

• Great beaches and hospitable tavernas

• Moderate breezes

• George’s top tip! Go to Hydra, but get there early to

secure a berth!

Authentic and unspoiled Greece. Located in the southeastern

Aegean Sea close to the Turkish coast, the

Dodecanese are twelve large and numerous smaller

islands, all steeped in history and bearing the traces

of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

The beautiful Sporades Islands of

Northern Greece are wonderfully

unspoilt by tourism. Of the

twenty-four islands, only four are

permanently inhabited, making this

the most secluded of all Greek sailing

destinations.

DODECANESE

Start your sailing holiday from either Kos or Rhodes, which

are the largest and most cosmopolitan of the Dodecanese,

and sail on to some of the most beautiful and fascinating

islands Greece has to offer.

Visit Tilos for its untouched natural beauty, Symi for its

stunning Venetian harbour and Nisyros for its dormant

volcano.

This is old Greece at its finest, and the consistent breezes,

combined with moderate to long distances, make the

Dodecanese the ideal destination for keen sailors seeking

lesser-known islands.

SPORADES

Visit the Sporades for spectacular scenery, white sand

beaches and for starry nights at anchorage, where the only

sound is that of water lapping against the hull.

Start your yacht charter from the town of Volos or the

forested island of Skiathos, which shot to fame as a location

for the 2008 hit movie “Mamma Mia”. Sail eastwards into

the Gulf of Volos or westwards to the islands of Alonissos

and Skopelos and feel an immediate change of pace.

You will encounter sleepy fishing villages, lovely sandy

beaches and deserted anchorages, not to mention the

possibility of spotting dolphins, whales and the endangered

Mediterranean Monk Seal.

The Sporades offer sheltered sailing with moderate winds

making this an ideal destination for families and couples

seeking peace and tranquillity on a crewed or bareboat yacht

charter.

perfect for snorkelling. Or tender into Šipan to wander round

the remains of a Roman villa and enjoy a hearty bowl of fish

saltwater lakes of the enchanting Mljet National Park -

for seven years.

called Stipe

Consisting of over 147 largely uninhabited islands, islets and

reefs, the Kornatis’ karstic terrain offers sheer cliffs, mysterious

caves and secret grottoes just waiting to be explored. The rich

underwater ecosystem is a delightful contrast to the barren

land making this destination a favourite for avid divers and

snorkelers.

Enjoy magical nights in deserted bays, pitch up to tiny fishing

villages for excellent fresh seafood, and visit the vibrant and

historic mainland town of Zadar to enjoy its lively nightlife.

With breath taking scenery and consistent winds, the

The stark natural beauty of the Kornati

archipelago, with its crystal blue waters and

startling rock formations, truly warrants its

National Park status, and makes it one of

Croatia’s most idyllic destinations for a crewed

or bareboat yacht charter.

ISTRIA

The Istrian Coast and

Kvarner Gulf were

favourite holiday spots of

European aristocracy for

centuries. Spending your

holiday here may feel like

you’re in a remote corner

of Tuscany, and with good

reason

Istria was part of Italy until 1947, and Italian influences are

clear in everything from the architecture to the food (the truffles

are world-famous) and the atmosphere. Istria produces

excellent local wines, and there is some sensational seafood

to be had, too.

Pula is the hub of Istrian sailing, the main city on the tip of

the protruding headland. The charter bases here and in and

nearby Pomer are excellent launchpads into the untouched

Kvarner Islands or along the rugged Istrian Coast.

Set sail from cosmopolitan Pula and head north via the gor-

geous Brijuni National Park (once General Tito’s private islands

and full of unusual wildlife) to explore Rovinj, a lovely

compact little town on the west of the peninsula, before cruising

south towards the islands of the Kvarner Gulf. If you’re

starting from Pula, you should check out the amazing Roman

ruins, including the Arch of the Sergii and Pula Ampitheatre,

close to the marina.

There is some excellent and occasionally challenging sailing to

be had in this northern corner of the Dalmatian Coast, as the

more mountainous coastline serves to amplify the bora winds.

• Fly to: Pula Airport

• Croatia with an Italian flavour

• Attractive towns, much smaller crowds

• Brilliant clear water anchorages - stunning National

Parks

• James’ tip - Due south of Pomer, Cape Kamenjak is a

rocky hidden gem of little bays and anchorages - an

absolute must visit, with stunning views all around.

sublime delights.

With moderate winds, turquoise blue seas and eye-wateringly

beautiful anchorages, Italy’s mix of calm coastal cruising and

open-water passages make for the perfect sailing experience

on either a bareboat charter for the more more experienced

sailor, or on a crewed yacht charter, for those who just want to

sit back and relax.

Whether you choose to explore its fascinating Roman past,

THAILAND

Where else on earth can you find

resplendent beaches, glittering temples,

exquisite cuisine, luxurious spas,

uninhabited islands and raucous nightlife?

The waters of the Andaman Sea are a glorious green, and the

islands rise magnificently like giant limestone karsts. Majestic

limestone pinnacles jut from the emerald Andaman sea in

Phang Nga Bay. The region has an almost mythical quality to

it, with scores of secret beaches hidden by overgrown jungles,

full of life.

The weather is generally sunny and dry with calm seas,

making Phuket the ideal destination to explore by boat.

South Pacific, French

Polynesia simply has

to be experienced to

be believed.

while exotic flora and fauna thrive in the subtropical

climate.
