January 1942 the Headquarters and several sections<br />

fought heroically for nearly a week against ten their<br />

number and were forced to surrender. Sergeant<br />

Philpott along with fellow Australian prisoners were<br />

then transported to Rabaul Prisoner of War (POW)<br />

camp and on 22 June 1942 set sail on the Japanese<br />

ship Montevideo Maru which was torpedoed by US<br />

submarine SS187 USS Sturgeon on the 1 July 1942.<br />

The Montevideo Maru was not marked to indicate it<br />

was carrying POW and over 1050 military POW’s and<br />

civilian internees lost their lives.<br />

Sergeant Brett Wood<br />

Brett Wood was born in Ferntree Gully, Victoria in<br />

1978. He joined the Australian Regular Army in 1996<br />

and after recruit training joined 6 th Battalion the Royal<br />

Australian Regiment. Sergeant Wood successfully<br />

undertook <strong>Commando</strong> Selection and Training and<br />

joined the then 4 th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment<br />

(later 2 nd <strong>Commando</strong> Regiment) in November 1998.His<br />

first deployment was to Bougainville in 2000. In 2001<br />

he deployed to East Timor and in 2003 to Iraq. In 2006<br />

Sergeant Wood deployed to Afghanistan and was<br />

awarded The Medal for Gallantry for leadership in<br />

action as a Team Commander during this tour. In 2011<br />

he returned to Afghanistan and for the third time and<br />

was tragically killed in action on Monday 23 May 2011.<br />

Private Greg Sher<br />

Born in South Africa and migrated to Australia with<br />

his family establishing itself in Melbourne. Greg joined<br />

the Army Reserve and served in East Timor prior to<br />

deploying to Afghanistan in late 2008. Greg was a<br />

Reservist with 1st <strong>Commando</strong> Regiment and was Killed<br />

in Action in Afghanistan on 4 January 2009.<br />

WELFARE<br />

<strong>2023</strong> is the Centenary for Melbourne Legacy who<br />

have provided welfare support to the families of<br />

Australian and allied veterans. ACA Vic is a close<br />

working relationship with Melbourne Legacy through<br />

its welfare activities, particularly regarding con -<br />

temporary veterans and their families and in recog -<br />

nition of the support and assistance provided by<br />

Legacy to Australian <strong>Commando</strong>s and their families in<br />

Victoria, ACA Vic has donated one hundred ‘Presi -<br />

dent’s’ medallions to the Melbourne Legacy President<br />

Legatee Kerry Jenke.<br />

Melbourne Legacy has an extensive network of<br />

personnel including full-time welfare staff, volunteer<br />

Legatees and ‘Friends of Legacy’ in the provision of<br />

this Presidents medallion will enable the Melbourne<br />

Legacy President recognised the support provided by<br />

individuals or organisations by the presentation of this<br />

medallion specially struck for this purpose in the<br />

Centenary year.<br />

ACA Vic continues to liaise and attend regular<br />

meetings with the Victorian Veterans Council, Legacy,<br />

RSL and DVA networks to promote ACA Vic’s<br />

objectives/expectations and support requirements in<br />

the very crowded Welfare & Advocacy arena.<br />
