Description
We do not know what a person carries in their heart. We do not know a
person's struggles, even if we think we know their story. The
forgiveness I received allowed me to move forward. I would not have
recovered as well without that gift. I have heard the saying,
"Forgiveness sets you free." I know that it is true. I hope you read it.
I try to be more forgiving after the things I have been through and
experienced. I fall short sometimes, and I need to remind myself of what
I have learned. I have often felt compelled to share my experience just
to make people think. We all need forgiveness. None of us are perfect;
we fail, fall short, and mess up.I was nineteen when I had a severe
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). While recovering from the TBI, I learned
that my friend had died in the wreck. This story is about recovering
from a Traumatic Brain Injury, learning to adapt to life with a
disability while dealing with the guilt of my friend's death, and
receiving the gift of forgiveness. Once, some friends were discussing a
car crash that had just happened. The passenger was injured badly, and
the driver walked away. Most friends said that the driver needed "to get
what is coming." There might have been a few that did not agree with
this, but I remember my closest friends wanted to condemn the guy.
Hearing this from my friends stunned me. I told friends that this
driver's situation was like mine just a few years ago. This conversation
has stayed with me ever since. It triggered something in me. Sometimes,
things hit too close to home. I have always had sympathy for people with
a story like mine. A teenage male showed a gun to his friend when it
fired a shot and killed the boy. It was considered an accident after an
investigation. I overheard talk about it, and much anger was directed at
the boy with the gun. I had also heard that the boy was distraught over
what had happened and that his friend had died. I felt for this kid. I
knew what it was like to carry that guilt around.
