St. Rita’s Medical Center added another life 

saving technology with the purchase of the 

Arctic Sun Therapeutic Hypothermia Cooling 

System. Staff received extensive education and 

hands-on training through simulation. Area EMS 

and referring community hospitals also were 

trained and put their cooling protocols into 

place, using various means such as chilled 

saline, ice packs, or specially designed cooling 

collars. Mild hypothermia potentially reduces 

damage, improving the recovery and quality of 

life for patients who have suffered cardiac arrest, 

stroke, brain injury, trauma or other critical

Once the cooling has been initiated 

either pre-hospital (EMS) or at a 

referring facility, the patient must be 

transferred to a hospital such as 

St. Rita’s that can continue the 

cooling for 24 hours at a controlled 

temperature, with a controlled 

re-warming phase. This can only be 

done with a unit that is communicating 

and adjusting temperature based on 

feedback from an internal temperature 

probe, placed either in the esophagus, 

bladder or rectum. 

Cardiac arrest carries a greater than 

90% mortality rate, leading to over 

300,000 deaths in the United States

each year. Despite the development of 

pharmacologic therapies for cardiac 

arrest and the improved access to 

electrical defibrillation, this mortality 

rate has not declined significantly over 

the past few decades. Many resuscitated 

patients expire during subsequent 

hospitalization. Among those survivors 

that make it to hospital discharge, 

neurological impairment is often 

permanent. 

Numerous studies have demonstrated 

that cooling patients can provide 

significant survival improvement after 

initial resuscitation from cardiac arrest. 

In 2002, two landmark studies were 

published demonstrating the use of 

therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac 

arrest (HACA) decreased mortality and 

improved neurologic function. Out-ofhospital 

survivors resuscitated from 

ventricular fibrillation and ventricular 

tachycardia were cooled to 32 to 34 

degrees C for 12-24 hours. Based on 

these studies the International Liaison 

Committee on Resuscitation and the 

American Heart Association (AHA), 

recommended the use of therapeutic 

hypothermia after cardiac arrest. Since 

these studies, additional outcome data 

have been published that reinforce the 

benefit of therapeutic hypothermia after 

out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. 

St. Rita’s first therapeutic hypothermia 

procedure was done in February by Dr. 

Julius Kato and Coronary Care staff 

with an excellent outcome.

outcome and according to 

Dr. Kato, it was a great 

learning experience for all 

involved. Although he had 

not done the procedure 

before, he had seen it done 

by a colleague at a facility he 

worked with prior to joining 

St. Rita’s Heart Specialists.

On Super Bowl Sunday 

around 6:00 P.M., just as 

Dr. Kato was ready to leave, a call came in that 

that a 52 year old woman in cardiac arrest was 

coming in from the Putnam County Ambulatory 

Care Center. As it turned out, the woman was a 

current patient of Dr. Kato and he was very 

familiar with her history. 

The staff had recently been trained on the 

Therapeutic Hypothermia Cooling System and 

the patient seemed like an excellent candidate. 

Reviewing protocols Dr. Kato called in the team 

and everyone was ready when the patient arrived. 

“The patient had extremely high blood pressure 

with possible brain damage, was combative and 

incoherent,” said Dr. Kato. “She was brought to 

Coronary Care and we all worked together as a 

team. I gave mini lectures as we went along 

anticipating questions and gave specifics as to 

what to watch for and how to respond to any 

number of possible issues. Amy Reindel R.N., 

who worked the night shift, became the primary 

caretaker and I was very comfortable with the 

entire process. Eventually I went home, but 

spent most of the night on the phone checking 

on the situation.

“After 24 hours, it was time to start 

re-warming. The machine is computerized 

to automatically set the 

temperature. The lowest body temp 

was 32.5 centigrade which is very 

low. During the re-warming process 

the staff noticed the patient was 

retaining fluids and feared a stroke. 

I was called and saw it was flash 

pulmonary edema and began 

appropriate medication. The 

re-warming has to be watched very 

closely because the various organs 

in the body ‘warm’ differently. 

“The patient had to be weaned off 

the vent which took longer due to 

swelling in the throat. Her breathing was 

labored and she was taking only short breaths. 

I still had concerns, but suddenly when her 

husband came in with their 11 year old son who 

was having a birthday that day, she started 

breathing normally and stretched out her arms 

to embrace the birthday boy.” 

Because of her retrograde amnesia, the patient 

remembers very little that went on first week, 

but she will always be happy the Therapeutic 

Hypothermia System was in place. What would 

have meant a three month hospital stay, instead 

was just over two weeks… with no brain 

damage or other negative outcomes. 

Jan Katz, Coronary Care Manager said “the 

entire team was phenomenal. Dr. Kato was 

awesome and all the staff members were well 

trained and ready. Without all their support we 

would not have been able to have this exceptional 

achievement. I am so proud of the entire 

staff and all they did. It may have been Super 

Bowl Sunday, but everyone came in with no 

hesitation at all and we definitely had our own 

championship team.”

Miracle Patient—Miracle 

The Jackie Kuhn Story 

Jackie Kuhn was at her job in Ottawa one day 

in 2007. She had been feeling fine and suddenly 

felt a “lump in her throat” and numbness in 

her left arm as well as some pain. She knew 

something was very wrong. That was the last 

recollection she had until several days later 

when she woke up surrounded by her family 

including her sister from California who was 

called due to Jackie’s serious condition. 

What Jackie doesn’t recall was a series of 

events that brought her back from death not 

once but several times. First she was taken to 

the near-by Putnam County Ambulatory Care 

Center. Unable to stabilize her, the staff called 

Lifeflight and contacted 

St. Rita’s with the information that they were 

sending a 40 year old woman having a heart 

attack. Cardiologist Dr. Adel Shaheen was just 

about to go off duty, but stayed because of the 

unusual circumstance of such a young woman 

having a heart attack. 

“Jackie coded in the sky on her way to 

St. Rita’s,” said Dr. Shaheen. “I went to the 

emergency department when she was brought 

in… unresponsive with very low blood 

pressure. We put in a balloon pump to stabilize 

her to just get her to the Cath Lab” 

Jackie suffered a massive heart attack due to 

a complete occlusion of the Left Anterior 

Descending (LAD) artery. The “widow maker” 

as it is called, often leads to death. It was 

the cause of sudden death of newsman 

Tim Russert.

approximately 20 people fighting for her 

life. “It was very challenging said

Three years after this terrifying event, 

Dr. Shaheen says Jackie’s heart muscle is back 

to normal. She says she feels very well and has 

not experienced any pain since the attack. 

Jackie reported her husband Rick says the 

three most important men in her life are first of 

all God, followed by Dr. Shaheen and finally 

him in third place. And he is all right with that.

Wrist Access 

Option For Cardiac Catheterization 

Dr. Raj Makwana explains the process of wrist 

access catheterization. 

Wrist access is now an option for some 

patients needing cardiac catheterization. 

In the wrist-access method, doctors 

make a small hole in the patient’s wrist, 

and then insert a thin plastic catheter 

through the hole into the wrist’s radial 

artery. They advance the catheter 

through the body’s network of arteries 

in the arm and into the chest until it 

eventually reaches the heart. Using 

X-rays to follow the progression of 

the catheter, doctors can see any 

abnormalities or problems along the 

way as the catheter journeys forward. 

“Inserting the catheter through the radial 

artery in the wrist, rather than through 

the groin, has many advantages,” said 

Dr. Raj Makwana, who frequently uses 

that option at St. Rita’s. “The wrist 

access approach usually has less bruising, 

bleeding and fewer complications than 

groin access. Most patients can sit up 

and walk immediately after the procedure 

and have a faster recovery. Not all 

patients qualify for wrist access, but it 

is an option for many.” 

Wrist-access catheterization is particularly 

beneficial for older or obese patients, 

and for those who have sleep apnea, 

vascular disease, or poor leg circulation. 

It also is preferable for patients with back 

and spine issues who can’t lie on their 

backs during a procedure. 

With groin-access catheterization, 

doctors make a small slit in the groin

area and insert a catheter through the 

slit, into the femoral artery in the thigh. 

The catheter is then threaded upward 

through the body’s network of arteries 

until it reaches the targeted area in the 

heart. With a catheterization performed 

through the groin, patients lay flat and 

immobile for several hours following the 

procedure, often with pressure applied 

to the insertion site to prevent bleeding. 

Some may experience pain and bruising 

at the site for several days. 

A Duke University’s Clinical Research 

Institute study shows that wrist 

catheterization reduces major bleeding 

anywhere between 58 to 73 percent 

compared to the groin method. The 

wrist access procedure is used in the 

United States only 1-3 percent of the 

time. In Europe, Japan and Canada, it is 

used 50 percent of the time. 

Other St. Rita’s interventional cardiologists 

also perform radial artery access, 

or are in the process of being certified 

for the procedure.

Another Choice For Prostate Cancer Treatment 

Robotic hands at work 

There are few symptoms associated with 

prostate cancer and a diagnosis means looking 

at a number of treatment and therapy options. 

These may include radiation therapy (IMRT and 

brachytherapy), cryosurgery, radical prostatectomy 

(robotic and open) or careful monitoring 

of the cancer without immediate 

treatment (active 

surveillance). Most men with 

a prostate cancer diagnosis 

have a number of concerns. 

The main concern should be 

treating, or removing, the 

cancerous prostate to stop 

the cancer from spreading. 

Other concerns include how 

well urinary, sexual and 

bowel functions will recover 

after treatment; and 

concerns about dealing 

with the rigors of the 

prostate cancer treatment 

itself. There is also the very 

important question of where 

to have the selected 

prostate cancer treatment 

and by whom. 

A breakthrough minimally 

invasive option for prostatectomy 

is now available at 

St. Rita’s, thanks to the 

acquisition of a da Vinci 

Robotic Surgery System and 

the arrival of Dr Craig A. Nicholson. Dr. Nicholson 

joined St. Rita’s Medical Center staff to head 

up the Robotic Surgery Service and is a 

recognized expert in the robotics field. He has 

presented findings at the American Urological

Association professional meetings and is a 

highly regarded proctor in teaching robotic 

techniques to other physicians. 

Upon his arrival, Dr. Nicholson had a 

waiting list of patients who were interested 

in robotic surgery treatment including Rod 

Clark his first robotic prostatectomy patient 

at St. Rita’s. 

“Robotic surgery is one of the newest 

minimally invasive techniques, and in some 

cases, is very superior to other treatments,” 

said Dr. Craig Nicholson. “While it is not 

ideal for every patient, those who are good 

candidates for this type of treatment may 

experience significant advantages.” 

In prostate cancer treatment, millimeters 

matter. Nerve fibers and blood vessels are 

attached to the prostate gland. To spare 

these nerves, they must be delicately and 

precisely separated from the prostate 

before its removal. Surgeons use the 

precision, vision and control provided by 

“the robot” to assist them in removal of 

the cancerous prostate while preserving 

important nerves and blood vessels. It is 

important to know that robotic surgery does 

not place a robot at the controls; the surgeon 

is always in control of every aspect of 

the surgery with the assistance of the 

robotic surgical system platform.

Robotic surgery involves tele-manipulation 

devices that allow the performance of 

complex surgical tasks with dexterity and 

minimal fatigue due to their ergonomic 

design, expanded degree of movements, 

tremor filtering, and 3-D stereoscopic 

visualization. The view of the operative field 

provided by the robotic system along with 

the unrestricted ability to execute almost 

any surgical task, has made robotic surgery 

the most popular approach for radical 

prostatectomy in the United States.

According to recent studies potential benefits of the robotic

achieved excellent results in removing prostate cancer without 

leaving cancer cells behind.

Improved Results Over Traditional Treatments: 

patients may benefit from surgical treatment of localized prostate 

cancer, the established gold standard, as compared to radiation. 

Surgery has a higher and longer survival rate than radiation or 

other treatments. Surgery also has a lower risk of long-term 

complications than radiation treatments. 

Minimally Invasive Surgery: The da Vinci System (the 

system in place at St. Rita’s) enables surgeons to perform even the most 

complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with 

unmatched precision.

Dr. Nicholson also performs other urological procedures with the robot 

including partial nephrectomy for kidney tumors, pyeloplasty for the destruction 

of the kidney, radical cystectomy for invasive bladder cancer and sacral 

colpopexy for female pelvic floor prolapse.

His grandfather died in the 

1970’s of prostate cancer 

that had metastasized. His 

father was diagnosed and 

had radical prostate surgery. 

With that history, Rob had 

wisely made sure he had 

regular screening with his 

urologist Dr. Russ Taylor 

Rod Clark with Dr. Nicholson 

which had always been 

normal until last year. He 

was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he had some decisions 

to make. 

“Since prostate cancer is usually a slow growing cancer I knew I had 

some time, but there is a certain window and I wanted to make sure I 

took care of it in that time span. I looked into radical and was evaluated 

at other hospitals. Then Dr. Taylor told me a new urologist, Dr. Craig 

Nicholson was joining the practice who is one of the leading robotic 

urologists in the country and thought I might want to consider the 

robotic surgery option.” 

Rod did some research on-line and made his decision. He would wait 

for Dr. Nicholson. 

“It was a no-brainer for me,” he said. “I decided to wait the short time 

until Dr. Nicholson arrived.” 

It turned out that Rod was an appropriate candidate for the surgery 

and was actually Dr. Nicholson’s first patient at St. Rita’s. 

“I had no apprehension at all,” said Rod, “and the experience has 

been great. I was only in the hospital overnight. My surgery was over 

about 6 P.M. and I was up at moving about by 3:00 in the morning. I 

had two days of minor incontinence which is expected and no other 

side effects. The catheter was only in 10 days which was also great. 

Small incisions required few sutures and I was back at work within three 

weeks. All indications so far are very good, but I will continue to follow up.” 

Rod summed his experience up saying “Dr. Nicholson is excellent and 

the robotic program appears to be amazing.”

In December 2006 the Council on Podiatric 

Medical Education (CMPE) approved the 

Co-Sponsorship of the Residency Program 

with St. Rita’s Medical Center and Joint 

Township District Memorial Hospital. In 2007 

St. Rita’s Medical Center took on total 

sponsorship of the program. St. Rita’s 

Medical Center Podiatric Medicine and 

Surgery (PM&S – 36) Residency Program is 

accredited by the Council on Podiatric 

Medical Education and provides the recent 

podiatry graduate with opportunities to gain 

experience in general medicine, podiatric 

medicine, foot and ankle surgery, and to 

study advanced and related sciences essential 

for the practice of podiatric medicine. 

Podiatric medicine can be defined as "That 

specialty of medicine and surgery which is 

concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, 

and treatment of disease and disorders which 

affect the human foot and its contiguous lower 

extremity structures.” While it is recognized 

that the podiatric resident will be one who 

specializes in the lower extremity, the goal 

of the podiatric surgical residency training 

program at St. Rita’s is also to provide 

opportunities for the resident to experience 

other areas that impact the patient's medical 

total well being.

Dr. Niemeyer successfully completed the

Ohio Podiatry, Inc. In addition, now serves 

as faculty member with St. Rita’s residency

Women Provide 

Comfort And Hope 

Members of Kappa Epsilon, women’s professional pharmacy sorority from Ohio 

Northern University donated 75 baskets of “comfort and hope” to St. Rita’s to be 

used for women diagnosed with breast cancer. 

A note included in each basket says; 

“The sisters of Kappa Epsilon, Ohio Northern University would like to give you 

this basket of comfort and hope. As women and as pharmacy students, we 

know that breast cancer can happen to anyone’s friend, sister, mother, grand- 

mother or even ourselves. We hope our thoughts and good wishes help you 

through your treatment and your future.” 

This is the second year the young women have donated baskets to St. Rita’s for 

these women. The women worked in teams of two putting the baskets together using 

their own money to purchase the baskets and items within. The beautiful 

baskets included many different items from soft handmade pillows, packages of 

Chai tea, lotions, teddy bears, sweet treats, grooming items and a wide range of 

other heartfelt gifts. 

The young women said they received thank you notes from many of last year’s 

recipients. “Many of them just brought tears to our eyes,” said co-president 

Lauren Bajbus. 

The baskets were accepted by Mary Kay Verhoff, Women’s Wellness Center Director 

on behalf of the women who will receive them as they are diagnosed.

National Wear Red Day 

On February 4 The Henry and Beverly Hawk Heart and Vascular Center staff hosted an awareness 

and educational event for National Wear Red Day under the leadership of Sheri Thomas, 

Outreach Coordinator. Heart Center staff and other employees wore red to raise awareness of 

heart disease as the #1 killer of women. A display was set up outside the High Street Café 

with educational materials, give-aways and door prizes. Best of all, many employees and 

visitors learned more about reducing the risk of heart disease.

St. Rita’s Sleep Disorders Center was recently notified that they have again been 

awarded a full five year accreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine 

(AASM). The center has consistently received full accreditation from the AASM. 

Dr. Sreenivasa Chanamolu is the Medical Director and Linda Skiver is the center 

manager. The Sleep Disorders Center is located in the 830 Medical Office Building, 

Suite 350 and treats sleep disorders for adults and children.

If you haven’t done so already, today is the day to begin 

planning your estate. Thinking ahead can save you many 

tax dollars, and with estate tax laws changing significantly 

for 2011, this should be of primary importance to you. In 

addition, you want to control the disposition of your 

property at death. 

Below are some tips to help you make certain your estate 

is properly planned. 

1. Update Your Will or Living Trust 

Your will or trust is the most important component of your 

estate plan. It is the basis for distributing the majority of 

your assets. Your will or trust should be reviewed every 

three to five years and also after times of personal 

change, such as marriage, death, divorce, birth, adoption, 

inheritance or a move to another state. The new estate 

and gift tax laws for 2011 provide significant planning 

opportunities for 2011 and 2012, so a review of your 

current documents would be prudent. 

2. Consider Taxes 

Your estate plan may need to be updated because of 

frequent tax law changes to the federal estate tax 

exemption amount. The new law creates an exemption 

from estate taxes of $5,000,000 for 2011 and 2012, but 

the exemption is scheduled to drop to only $1,000,000 in 

2013 unless Congress makes further changes. 

3. Choose an Executor or Trustee 

Think long and hard about the individual or institution 

named to act as your executor or trustee, bearing the 

responsibility of carrying out your wishes after death. You 

will want to name someone you trust implicitly, someone 

who is experienced to act. You may consider naming a 

loved one along with an experienced financial institution 

as co-executors/trustees.

4. Name a Power of Attorney 

Assign someone to act for you to handle 

your financial affairs in the event that you 

are unable to do so yourself. Property can 

also be managed, and disposition rights 

granted, through a durable power of 

attorney. You should also consider creating 

a power of attorney exclusively for your 

health care. Having both a financial power 

of attorney and health care power of 

attorney may avoid the need for a probate 

guardianship. 

5. Create a Living Will 

Draft a living will that makes your wishes 

known regarding extraordinary measures 

for keeping you alive. A living will allows 

decisions to be made when you are unable 

to communicate them yourself. This document 

can help family members who may be 

distraught make decisions based upon your 

stated intentions. You should inform your 

family members of your wishes in advance. 

6. Check Up on Insurance 

Evaluate your insurance periodically. 

Make sure that you have enough to cover 

changing needs. You should also review 

your beneficiary designations to ensure 

they’re reflective of the people you intend to 

benefit. For example, you may need to 

update your beneficiaries if a deceased or 

former spouse is listed. If your estate may 

be subject to estate taxes in the future, 

consider shifting ownership of your life 

insurance to an irrevocable trust or to 

your heirs. 

7. Evaluate Retirement Plan Asset 

Beneficiaries 

Like insurance, you should make sure the 

beneficiaries of your retirement plan assets 

are up-to-date. But keep in mind that when 

you name anyone other than your spouse 

as beneficiary of these assets, they can be 

exposed to double taxation: first as part of 

your taxable estate and second as income 

to the individual beneficiary. If you’ve 

thought about making a gift to St. Rita’s 

Medical Center, consider giving retirement 

assets to us and giving other assets that 

are not as heavily taxed to family members. 

As a nonprofit organization, we are taxexempt, 

so we can use 100 percent of 

your gift. 

8. Be Charitable 

An unlimited amount of money can be given 

to a qualified charitable organization during 

your lifetime or at your death, free of federal 

gift and estate taxes. Charitable gifts are an 

important component of any estate plan 

and may be especially helpful for people 

who do not have heirs to consider when 

distributing their estate. 

Through gifts to a charitable organization, 

you can benefit during life and at death and 

reduce your taxable estate as well. An 

estate gift to St. Rita’s Medical Center can 

make a tremendous difference in the future 

of the many people St. Rita’s serves. For
