Cottonwood Cove Roosevelt Lake: David Sowders/Copper Corridor Reaching new heights BY DAVID SOWDERS Assistant Editor Spring 2023 was a historic season for one of Arizona’s largest lakes, with water levels unseen since its creation. A wet winter more than refilled Roosevelt Lake, northwest of Globe, after years of drought. In late March the lake, created by the construction of Roosevelt Dam in 1911, was around 105% full (rising to 106% on the 29th); on June 7 it was still at 99% capacity. Salt River Project Director of Water Supply Charlie Ester said this was Roosevelt Lake’s highest recorded level since the dam was built, with winter bringing a tremendous amount of rain and snow to the Salt River watershed. “We have seen 180% of normal precipitation,” said Ester. “Some areas of the watershed have had not this much snow since 1973.” He added that full reservoirs like Roosevelt Lake help restore water supplies and “go a long way toward helping restore the watershed after years of drought conditions.” This spring, colorful wildflowers – nourished by the same winter rains – lined the Senator Hardt Highway (State Route 188) from Globe to See ROOSEVELT, page 6 Gateway to the Copper Corridor 2023 5
