WEST SIDE CATHOLIC CENTER:
A MISSION WORTH RACING FOR
THE ORGANIZATION HOSTS ITS 18TH ANNUAL PANCAKE RUN ON JUNE 3RD AND PROCEEDS
BENEFIT THEIR PROGRAMS. YOUR PARTICIPATION SUPPORTS A WIDE SCOPE OF SERVICES.
Grounded in faith, hope, love and respect
for those we serve, the West Side
Catholic Center assists all who come in need
of food, clothing, shelter, advocacy and a
path to self-sufficiency.
Since 1977, the West Side Catholic Center
has offered hot meals, hospitality, clothing
and household goods, emergency services,
advocacy, a family shelter, housing
solutions, and workforce development
training to those in need at no charge,
regardless of religious affiliation. The West
Side Catholic Center was established in
1977 by several area churches that saw a
critical need within the community due to
extreme poverty. We are a unique, private,
not-for-profit agency with Catholic roots,
independent of the Catholic Diocese and
Catholic Charities.
Through our main programs we respond
to the needs of men, women, and children
in the Greater Cleveland area and provide
services, resources, and supports. All
services are provided free of charge.
OUR PROGRAMS
The Resource Center emphasizes hospitality,
welcoming all who come in need of our
services. Open six days a week, the Resource
Center provides respite day shelter for the
poor and homeless, as well as outreach,
wellness and self-sufficiency programs.
Moriah House Family Shelter accepts
female veterans and families who are
experiencing homelessness or have resided
in substandard living conditions. Through
this facility, we provide a full range of
transitional services that assist residents
in moving from homelessness to stable
housing and employment through these
basic programs.
Zacchaeus Housing Solutions assists
homeless families in maintaining housing.
Zacchaeus exists to rapidly re-house
homeless families through client rent
subsidies and case management.
Family Engagement offers family-centered
services to build relationships and promote
family well-being. Program offerings
are guided by Strengthening Families
and Trauma-Informed evidence-based
perspectives, and celebrate, affirm,
empower and support families toward
greater wellness and bonding.
The Family Success Network provides
support to families with the goal of keeping
them together and preventing child abuse.
These supports include programs focusing
on family coaching, financial literacy,
positive parenting, and concrete financial
assistance.
The Workforce Program offers individualized
employment services while working with
existing community organizations to
address other critical needs that impact
employment. The program deals with the
causes of underemployment and provides
the skills needed to secure employment
and remain employed.
The Culinary Academy is an entry level
training program. No previous food service
experience is necessary. The eight week
course focuses on practical kitchen skills
and culinary knowledge.
TRAUMA-INFORMED
Human service systems become traumainformed
by thoroughly incorporating, in all
aspects of service delivery and the physical
setting, an understanding of the prevalence
and impact of trauma and the complex
paths to healing and recovery. In 2010, the
West Side Catholic Center began training
all staff and volunteers to become “trauma
informed” integrating this philosophy into
every program we offer our clients.
Building on key principles of safety,
trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and
empowerment, trauma-informed services
are designed specifically to be welcoming
and hospitable for all individuals.
YOUR HELP
By participating in the West Side Catholic
Center’s annual Pancake Run you are
providing support for all these services that
serve over 5,000 men, women, and children
annually. We hope you’ll join us this year on
Saturday, June 3rd, 2023 at the West Side
Catholic Center.
YOUR FEET FIRST!
“AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.” — BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
Plantar fasciitis is a painful athletic
overuse syndrome of the foot that
occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band
of tissue that connects the heel bone to the
toes, becomes inflamed. This condition is a
common cause of heel pain, especially in
recreational and student athletes, people
who are overweight, or those who stand
for prolonged periods. While traditional
treatments like rest, ice, and stretching
exercises are often effective, new therapies
are emerging that show promise for
treating this condition.
One such therapy is computer generated
custom orthotics, which generates a highly
specific and accurate model of the foot,
around which the newest materials are
applied to control any pathologic functions
or movements of the foot in nearly any
shoe.
Another potential therapy for plantar
fasciitis is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
injections. PRP is a concentrate of the
patient’s own blood that is rich in platelets,
growth factors, and other healing agents.
When injected into the affected area, PRP
can accelerate tissue repair and reduce
inflammation. Studies have shown
promising results for this therapy, with
some patients experiencing significant
pain reduction and improved function.
Finally, another promising therapy for
plantar fasciitis is stem cell therapy.
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that
can differentiate into various types of
specialized cells in the body, including
those in the plantar fascia. Stem cell
therapy involves injecting stem cells
into the affected area, where they can
stimulate tissue repair and regeneration.
While still in the early stages of research,
stem cell therapy shows great promise
for treating plantar fasciitis and other
conditions that involve tissue damage
and inflammation.
CLEVELAND PERFORMANCE
CHIROPRACTIC: 3 THINGS
TO IMPROVE YOUR RUN TODAY
RUNNING IS A GREAT FORM OF EXERCISE, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE TOUGH ON YOUR BODY, LEADING TO
INJURIES THAT CAN HINDER YOUR PERFORMANCE AND PROGRESS. HERE ARE 3 THINGS YOU CAN
DO TODAY TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF RUNNING-RELATED INJURIES:
FOAM ROLLING:
Foam rolling is a self-massage technique
that helps to reduce muscle tension,
improve range of motion, and decrease pain/
discomfort. It’s an effective way to reduce the
risk of injury and improve performance.
Focus on rolling out the calves, quads, and
glutes. These muscles are heavily involved
in running and can easily become tight and
overused. By rolling out these areas, you
can reduce muscle tension and improve
blood flow, allowing for better recovery and
performance. Your first line of defense for
any tightness or discomfort should be
foam rolling!
STRENGTH TRAINING:
Strength training is important for runners
as it helps to improve muscle imbalances,
increase stability, and prevent injury. Most
importantly, it can improve performance!
For most, just starting to incorporate
strength training is a win. But if you want
to really make a difference in your runs,
we recommend single-leg stability and
planking exercises. Single-leg exercises such
as lunges, Bulgarian split squats, weighted
step-ups, and single-leg Romanian deadlifts
can help to improve balance and stability,
while also addressing muscle imbalances.
BONUS TIP:
Planks are also great for runners as they
help to strengthen the core and pelvis,
which is essential for efficient running form
and injury prevention. We recommend side
planks, front planks, and glute bridges.
There are many variations for each but we
recommend mastering the simple version
first. Shoot for 30-60 seconds holds without
allowing your hips to drop.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY:
One of the most important things you can
do to prevent injury is to listen to your
body. This means knowing when to modify
your workouts, take a rest day, or seek medical
attention if necessary. Pay attention to any
aches or pains you may be feeling and
take action before they become more
serious injuries. It’s much easier to modify
a run or your training program early than
shutting it down later in the program with the
potential of missing your race. Ignoring pain
or pushing through it can lead to more serious
injuries down the line, so it›s important to
address any issues as soon as they arise.
RECAP:
Reducing the risk of running injuries
requires a combination of foam rolling,
strength training, and listening to
your body. By incorporating these tips
into your training routine, you can help to
prevent injuries and improve your running
performance. Add 5 minutes of foam rolling
before your runs. It’s simple and it’s only 5
minutes! Pick one day a week after a run to
do 30 minutes of light strength training. It
doesn’t have to be anything crazy. Remember,
a little bit of prevention goes a long way in
ensuring you can continue running for years
to come. Run today so you can run tomorrow!
Cleveland Performance Chiropractic is
Northeast Ohio’s premier sports medicine
